Archena - One of the hidden gems of Murcia Region is the Royal Spa at Archena, Balneario de Archena. Since their discovery by the Romans in 218 BC, these thermal springs have been valued for their theraputic properties. The water emerges from the ground at a temperature of 52°C and is rich in dissolved sulphur, calcuim, magnesium, sodium and potassium.

Cartagena –This city has a wealth of attractions to visit. Have a look at www.ayto-cartagena.es to see timetables for the Catamaran trip which lets you discover Cartagena from the sea. There is also the Roman Theatre which has been one of the most amazing discoveries in the town in recent years.

Fortuna - Famous for its hot springs which were greatly appreciated by the Romans, Fortuna is fast becoming popular once again as the town becomes an important centre for hydrotherapy, beauty treatments and other therapies associated with the natural hot mineral water.

Jumilla - This historic area has staked out its claim with the production of red wines with supreme alcoholic tenor and magnificent color. There are many wine tours available with tasting included! www.jumilla.org

Lorca – Visit this city and take the tour around the ancient 13th Century castle and learn about the struggle between the Moors and Christians. www.lorcatallerdeltiempo.com. You can make a day of it and take the tourist train from the city, through the plazas and up to the castle.

Places to see in murcia


El Mar Menor - a salty lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean sea by a sand bar 22km long, with variable widths of 100 to 1200m. With a surface area of nearly 170km², coastal length of 70km, warm, clear water which does not exceed 7m in depth, it is “the largest swimming pool in the world.” Its relatively high salinity aids floatation, making this one of the most popular places in Europe for the practice and training of water sports.

Mazarrón - Without a doubt the charm of this town resides in its varied and numerous beaches, 35km of coast to be exact, of which 10 of them are still virgin and amazingly beautiful, not only due to the places in which these beaches are found but also due to their amazing marine resources. www.mazarron.es

Murcia – A city with a wealth of architecture to visit and explore including the Cathedral de Santa Maria located at the plaza del Cardinal Belluga, here you will also city hall and the Palacia Episcopal, the residency of the Bishop of Murcia. www.murciaciudad.com.

Sierra Espuña - Murcia’s largest pine forests with avariety of wild life including squirrel, wild boar, low goshawk, royal owl and golden eagle. It is a must for walkers, cyclists and campers. www.sierraespuna.com
