WBT Defined

Web based training is training using the internet.

Web-based training is also commonly referred to as the following:

e-Learning

Online Learning

Distance Learning

Onsite learning

It is considered using the web to support traditional classroom learning.

Distance learning

It is using the web to conduct a class.

The goal of distance learning is not only to conduct quality learning, but to also make learning opportunities available and accessible to more students

WBT Components

Web Browser

Server

Content

Content Delivery (html, Flash, Java, etc.)

Competency Assessment

Record-keeping

1-Web broswer

A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web.

The most common web browsers ie.-Internet Explorer (IE), Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome

2-server

A computer, or a software package, that provides a specific kind of service to client software running on other computers.

3-Content

6-Record keeping

Name of Networking Contact, Mode of contact and location, Describe contacts relevance, Contact phone number and e-mail, Notes from conversation, Description of their role and company etc.

WBT Advantages

easy delivery of training to users

easy updating of content

quicker turnaround of finished product

requires less technical support

increased billing options

access is controllable

options to link with other training systems

WBT Disadvantages

limited formatting of content in current browsers

bandwidth/browser limitations may restrict instructional methodologies

limited bandwidth means slower performance for sound, video, and intense graphics

Whats better - Classroom Training or WBT?

WBT has the following advantages over classroom training

No upper limit on number of students who can be trained at one time.

No travel costs.

Most WBT requires no instructor.

Easy to update from central location.

Easy to standardize content to entire learner base.

WBT has the following disadvantages compared to classroom training

Learners must have access to computers and to the Internet.

WBT requires more development time due to technical requirements.

WBT requires special expertise to develop and deliver.

WBT usually requires a special software package or license to develop.

Cotd

Its hard to simulate real-world situations in WBT.

Management System (LMS) is required.

Without incentives, completion rate can be extremely low .

Challenges in wbt

From an instructor perspective,

From technology perspective,

From student perspective.

1-From an instructor perspective,

Considerable time is spent keeping a course site updated, responding to emails, phone call and other information, in addition to the normal instructor tasks.

may not be as interactive as instructor-led courses.

the absence of an instructor may encourage some students to slacken their efforts,

From technology perspective,

require consistent upgrading, as new software and hardware is developed.

Technological limitations

Bandwidth and browser availability may restrict instructional methodologies, as an organization with limited bandwidth may experience slow performance for sound, video, and graphics.

From student perspective.

May feel isolated from other learners, frustrated by poor flows of communication, and confused, as a result of feedback that is not always clear.

The amount and timeliness of feedback is of great importance to the learner.

certain skills, such as those involving psychomotor skill development, can be difficult to learn via web-based applications
