Named the best pub in the Love the North East Awards, The Stables pub and eatery in Houghton-le-Spring is a popular choice for diners of all ages, and among man’s best friend. The Stables was named the best dog-friendly pub by Winalot dog food.

THE STABLES

The Scullery is a hidden gem tucked away in Silksworth. A modern café-bistro by day, and contemporary Italian kitchen by night, the Scullery menu ranges from sandwiches and skewers to pizzas, fish dishes and authentic classics, and with an early bird menu from 3.30pm to 6.30pm, it’s quality that’s gentle on the pocket.

This restaurant brings you all of the classic pizzas you’ll love – from Margherita to the Bolognese Pizza which will tantalise your taste buds. Not only are there choices of pizzas but chicken dishes, pasta dishes and a variety of side orders to complement your meal. They will even deliver; perfect!

DIVINO’S PIZZERRIA

Kaspas serves an assortment of high quality hot and cold desserts all under one roof. The menu includes a delightful selection of ice creams, gelatos, waffles, crepes, milkshakes, smoothies and sundaes and so much more. No wonder it’s proven a big hit across the UK. So if you fancy something sweet, this is one place not to be missed.

The former Londonderry pub has been transformed. Serving a variety of real ales as well as bottled beers provided by local breweries. The food served has been inspired by local flavours including home-made corned beef, panackelty and beef dripping chips.

THE PEACOCK

Locally sourced produce is always the dish of the day at this stylish city-centre kitchen and bar, which prides itself on providing the best quality produce for those who climb aboard. The nautical theme goes beyond the cool décor – with fantastic fish and seafood dishes along with a sailor’s favourite, rum of course.

PORT OF CALL

Cooking up a storm in East Rainton, Angelo’s Trattoria offers a diverse menu that includes favourites from its city-centre sister site. The restaurant’s joint owner Nello Russo was named Best Chef in last year’s national English Italian Awards, and he continues to excel in producing high standard fresh fish, meat and vegetarian dishes for all palettes.

ANGELO’S TRATTORIA

Enjoy delicious local food surrounded by panoramic views of the River Wear, it’s Marina and the North Sea at the National Glass Centre’s eatery, The Glass Yard. The Indulgent Afternoon Tea is the most popular choice among visitors, but The Glass Yard has an impressively varied menu as well as a children’s menu, making it a perfect pit-stop for families browsing the beautiful glass work and taking part in workshops. One of the most unique dining experiences in the region, the atmosphere is one of relaxation and calm, while celebrating the city’s creative heritage.

Set within the stunning surroundings of Arts Centre Washington, The Courtyard is a converted barn with a rustic charm and plenty of choice for visitors. From real ciders to cask ales, there’s something a bit different to wash down the quality home cooked food served fresh every day.

THE COURTYARD CAFÉ BAR FIUME

Caffeine fiends have an impressive choice of coffee shops at the Bridges, with Starbucks, Caffé Nero, Debenhams café, Esquires and Costa all offering light lunches alongside a quality cuppa. Olive Affaire is a little Greek haven, hidden in the cosy basement of one of John Street’s stunning Georgian townhouses. Inspired by the Mediterranean, the bistro is understated, but the freshly prepared food packs a punch. Eat in or take away, there’s something to tickle the tastebuds of the fussiest of eaters.

OLIVE AFFAIRE

With ornaments, paintings and furniture imported from the land of the pharaohs, this traditional taste of Egypt is a treat for all diners who pass beyond the eatery’s amazing golden door.
