Ten Years!

Dear Family of God,

It is hard to believe that 10 years have passed since I began to serve as St. Philip’s rector and priest. It has been a wonderful time of ministry, fellowship, laughter, a few tears, and a lot of work by all of us.

I can still remember the first time I walked into our sanctuary and stood in the middle of the aisle at the bottom of the choir steps. I looked up at the altar and felt the presence of God. I still feel that presence whenever I enter our sanctuary and even more so at Christmas and Easter.

Together, we have made a few changes, some improvements to our facilities: widened the hallway into the nave off of the Apostles’ Way; moved the altar forward to provide more room behind for two persons to get by each other when necessary; widened the choir chancel steps and the steps from the altar rail; painted the interior of the sanctuary; repaired the church roof and gutters; replaced a HVAC unit; upgraded the restroom by the chapel to make it handicap accessible.

By the generosity of Jim and Patty Austin we replaced our ceramic stations of the cross with a full set of original paintings and frames dating from the 1890’s. The Austin’s even paid for the restoration of each and every station. Kevin Quinn, local artisan, cleaned every painting and repaired many small and a few large tears in the canvasses.

Our entrances to the parish hall were made more welcoming with red awnings with the Episcopal Church shield and St. Philip’s on the front of the doorways. New metal awnings replaced the dilapidated cloth awnings on the windows on the west end of our facilities.

In the kitchen we have a new dishwasher, stove/oven and microwave in memory of Ann Kassab Olive and Norma Bastian. A new green set of altar hangings and vestments was also donated by Nancy and John Messick in memory of Norma. St. Philip’s has also been graciously gifted by other members of our parish family. Vicky Cleveland crocheted a beautiful white stole for me and needlepointed a new set of hymn board numbers and season names. Phyllis Sapp gave us a cross-stitched music banner made by her father, M. Raymond Payne (also in memory of M. Raymond & Virginia Payne).

Our wonderful St. Nicholas children’s playground finally came to be and was dedicated last year primarily through the generosity of the Turney families - Joe and Ann and Clay and Stacy. Eagle Scout Jonah Ellman helped finish the playground area through his Eagle Scout project. We now have a “new to us” organ, again through the generous gift of Ann Turney in memory of Joe.

There have not been many changes to the overall worship services other than using our Book of Common Prayer services and prayers more throughout the church year. We continue to celebrate the major feast days of the church and the saints of our community of faith over the centuries. We added the Thursday midday service to provide another opportunity for weekly worship for those who cannot attend the Sunday services. We started a celebration of La Santa Eucaristia (Holy Eucharist in Spanish) every other Saturday evening this past Advent.

The tornado of May 2011 destroyed a large part of Joplin, ended 160 lives and changed the lives of thousands of others. This tragedy was destructive. However, God called us to show God’s love to others through our two Give Away events providing needy citizens with basic necessities. We hosted a Reformed Episcopal Church congregation as they searched for a new facility. Through the generosity of hundreds of people we helped individuals and families get back on their feet through the tornado fund and hosted volunteers as they worked to rebuild Joplin.

We were instrumental in beginning and continuing the Joplin Interfaith Coalition with the first Interfaith Service on Memorial Day, May 30th, just 8 days after the deadly tornado. We continue to be part of that important ministry as we break down walls that divide people, build bridges between our sisters and brothers of many denominations and faiths, and serve as examples of peacemakers and reconcilers to the world. This relationship called us to host the Muslim congregation of the Islamic Society of Joplin for their worship and Iftar dinner after their mosque was burned in August 2012.

We continue to reach out to those who are less fortunate by raising funds to support various ministries such as Children’s Haven, Community Clinic, Salvation Army, Crosslines, Souls Harbor, Watered Gardens, and others through the Episcopal Relief Fund.

I am proud to be associated with this family of God here at St. Philip’s. I am proud of each and every one of you and am blessed to call you my friends and sisters and brothers in Christ.

We have been faithful in our mission and that is what God calls us to do. We are the people of God, the body of Christ and whether we are small or large in number, in the red or by the grace of God in the black, we will continue to…

Worship God, Follow Christ, Love our Neighbor.

I look forward to many more years together as priest and parishioners, as rector and members of St. Philip’s, if it be God’s will. I look forward to sharing our common life, love, peace and joy.

Your servant in Christ Jesus,

Fr. Frank+

We had a very good year. Thanks to all of your for your efforts.

S t e w a r d s h i p

The month of February has many special days in it for all of us but one that receives the most attention is St. Valentine’s Day. It is a special day for expressing our love for one another. It is about all those who are dear to us.

“This is my commandment love one another as I have loved you.”

John 13:34

“Love is patient, love is kind” 1 Corinthians 13:4

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice in it and be glad.

Psalm 118:24

Stewardship falls into place during this special month of love, kindness, and rejoicing. Whether we give a small amount more towards keeping the beauty of our church restored, find a spare bit of time to do a little extra in the church, be outwardly supportive of who we are as Episcopalians and not try to compare ourselves to other churches, this is all showing the “special hearts” we have!

This St. Valentine’s Day start a new tradition like some of the ones mentioned above. Also, send a simple hand written valentine to a person who needs some friendship and faith back into their lives. You will be surprised how healthy your heart will feel!!

Beautiful Sanctuary (not magical but blessed work by many) see additional pictures on next page

Christmas 2014 was a busy time for many in transforming the Sanctuary into an even more beautiful place to worship. I will share how this all happens plus for those unable to attend, please feast your eyes on some behind the scenes preparations and finished wonders!

Greenery was brought in by several altar guild members. You may recall it was a very cold day when they needed to cut and gather all this from different people but off they went bundled up with a plan of action. Holly, Magnolia, and Juniper greenery all cut fresh and brought to church. Cedar wreaths with red bows were on all doors and some in the sanctuary. The poinsettia tree is composed of 18 small poinsettias and then many poinsettias (approximately 58) are placed throughout the sanctuary. Baby’s breath always adds the finishing touch on the greenery. Gorgeous red carnations adorn the high altar and children’s altar (St. Ann’s). As you could read in the January newsletter, we had many individuals donate towards the beauty that is prepared in the sanctuary!

Barb Mazoub pointed out to me that Sherrick Dermott, Jeff Majzoub, and Clay Turney have been hanging the artificial high greens for years and when they were younger boys they were all in the same Sunday school class. This is a tradition and much appreciated!

Every altar guild member has a sheet from the directress telling them their assigned duty because remember there are votives with candles, isle standards to decorate, bows to fluff , the nativity to prepare plus lots of silver and brass polishing plus dusting.

Thank you for baby Jesus’s birth and the recognition of wonderment arriving in a manger in a stable filled with straw!

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.

Blended Family Workshop/Support Group The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

We will meet January 26, 2015 at 6:00 p.m.

and February 23, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. Congratulations “Graduates” 2014 Leadership Boot Camp

Carole Pryor and Father Frank Sierra were in the 2014 graduating class of Leadership Boot Camp out of 19 candidates! They were given a Certificate of Completion and a memento of the Leadership Boot Camp experience. Candidates are expected to produce a concluding paper to help assimilate the course study material with its application to their current leadership role and context.

Bishop Marty and Rev. Dr. Steven Rottgers initiated Boot Camp, as a means of passing along tools, models, theories, and a common vocabulary of Leadership. The diocesan leaders of our congregations highlighted the need for words and images to communicate “Best Practices”. It seemed there was a need for “Operational Language and Images” to frame the theories and information the leaders need.

The Boot Camp began in January 2014 and lasted 8 months. Topics involved: “Self-Awareness of I AM” “I am part of a Family, a Community, A System” “Challenges to Differentiated Leadership” “Emotional Intelligence” “Sizing Up Your Congregation for Growth” “Church Dynamics seen through Systemic Lenses” “Leadership and Management: The Differences are People and Change Dynamics”

Thank you, Carole and Fr. Frank, for taking time to attend sessions and utilize skills learned with the congregation at St. Philip’s.

Jim Paul has been Treasurer at St. Philip’s for slightly over 25 years. Jim has kept the records straight, the budget tightly reigned, and reported monthly to the Vestry. In addition to his activities as Treasurer, Jim has taken an active part in St. Joseph’s, Shrove Tuesdays, lawn maintenance, plumber, electrician, painter, ceiling tile installer, usher and greeter, and Vestry member at various times.

We shall miss Jim being around the parish and many extra hours, but we know that Rose (behind every good man there is a good woman) has many jobs waiting for him and she shall keep him busy.

APPRECIATION BANQUET

Women's Bible Study

by Ramona Shields

We took a year and a half to read the 100 most important Bible passages; then we began reading two different books, Strong Women of the Bible and The Scarlet Chord which were about the major women of the Old Testament. We have now begun a new book called Defiant Daughters, Christian Women of Conscience. The book is divided into three sections: Daughters of Daring, Daughters of Determination and Daughters of Dedication. The first woman, Laura Lopez of Guazapa, died in 1985 during the uprisings in El Salvador. We take one individual woman from the book, read aloud, then spend time in discussion. Many of the women of faith gave their lives for their beliefs. We welcome any and all women who would like to strengthen their own beliefs. One of the quotes from Ita Ford in the prologue of this book brought out a great deal of discussion, "We keep plugging along here because life is threatened by other evils worse than death ---hatred, vengeance, and selfishness". We meet every Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the lounge; any who would like to join us are welcome. We have lively discussions about what we read and what we believe!

St. Catherines by Ramona Shields

The guild has changed the look of the area where we have the gift shop. The shop monetarily helps St. Catherine's with its outreach and purchasing of items for the education of the church. We hand out Bible reading sheets for Advent and offer daily reading meditations. We will do the same for Lent. We help with Vacation Bible School. We purchased the Lenten study for Sunday School written by Barbara Crafton which is a series of lectures and discussions of forgiveness.

The guild offers a variety of items for sale from clothing to jewelry; we also have beautiful Anglican rosaries for sale made by hand by Episcopal ladies in Utah. Items for baptism and confirmation are on hand for purchase as well as the Book of Common Prayer.

We can special order most items you might need in respect to the Episcopal church. In the spring, we will be offering new items because we will be returning to buyers market in Kansas City. Come have a look, you might be surprised in what you see!

Women’s Night Out

Fellowship, Games, Snacks, etc., etc., etc.

All are invited (females, that is)

New Front Doors

Upon coming into the south parking lot of St. Philip’s one would immediately notice our new double doors which are directly in front of the parish office and leads to the parish hall.

There is no longer a “middle bar” in the way whenever larger, wider items need to be put inside the church, so the problem has been solved by the removal of the old middle bar.

The door lock has been rekeyed so that it uses the same key as you are use to using to enter the church…both double doors and kitchen doors still take the same key.

We would like to make note of a few items

• be careful in turning the key too far to the left.

• do not pull on the “key” while opening the door.

We are working to eliminate the problem so be patient and enjoy the doors!

Pictorial Directory

By now most of you have obtained your copy of our new pictorial directory. It certainly is very colorful and we believe we have accomplished a top quality directory of which we we can be very proud.

I also note that some who had their pictures taken have not received their copy. If you are one of them, please stop by the office and pick up your copy.

We have a few copies extra that were supplied to us, so if you are a regular parish member and really want a copy, then by all means stop by and we will give a directory while our supply lasts.

All Female Members in the Church are members of Women of St. Philip’s:

Gayle Tuck is President for the year 2015 and she encourages all women to get involved and enjoy the wonderful fellowship and rewarding outreach programs and services WOSP provide. I am sure most of you remember our challenge set by Vicky Cleveland for 70 blankets to be made or bought and we went past that count in 2014! You have seen pictures concerning this project (in a previous newsletter) and it was rewarding to make delivery. One nursing care facility, Souls Harbor, Watered Gardens, and an oncology center were the proud recipients of blankets and very thankful. This is one example of our faith and St. Philip’s reaching out to individuals and organizations.

Below are a few dates and items discussed at the WOSP first meeting of 2015:

Meetings are in April, July and October this year on the second Saturday at 10:30a.m. (listed below):

The meetings are not lengthy because an agenda is followed. Place these dates on your calendar and enjoy being a member of WOSP. A $5.00 donation is encouraged to help with outreach programs.

April 11th at 10:30 am in St. Philip’s Parish Hall July 11th at 10:30 am in St. Philip’s Parish Hall October 10th at 10:30 am in St. Philip’s Parish Hall

Listed below are events already planned:

WOSP will do the Lenten supper on Thursday, March 5th. WOSP are planning an International Dinner on Saturday, April 18th. More details to come.

Minutes to Vestry Meeting, December 15, 2014

The roll was called, and the devotion given.

New members were welcomed and thanked for their service. Minutes from the last meeting were approved.

Jim Paul, treasurer, gave a report regarding the “Save Our Windows” Project. He also went into detail about Balance sheet and Income Statement, stating the month of November was not a good month for pledge income.

The January calendar was adopted with a few minor modifications. It was decided by the Vestry to try and keep the monthly meetings at two hours. Harvey Hutchinson, Junior Warden, gave his report noting the courtyard beautification and sewer drainage problem.

There was no Senior warden Report. Fr. Frank gave a Rector’s report explaining the Shepherding lists and their importance to be utilized on a regular basis. Three Diocesan Convention delegates need to be found and reported to the head office. Leadership workday will be Saturday, January 31 from 9 am – 2 pm.

Old Business: WOSP had an issue that was discussed and an unnamed recipient was needing help.

The meeting closed in prayer.

Minutes to Annual Parish Meeting, December 7, 2014

Carole Pryor, Senior Warden, opened the meeting at 10:55 a.m. and Fr. Frank opened with prayer. Current Vestry members were recognized. Vestry nominees were introduced and a short speech was given by each. Nominees were: Gayle Tuck, Michael Nagle, and Grace White. They were accepted and elected unanimously by acclamation.

Jeff Heil will be assuming the new duties as Treasurer replacing Jim Paul beginning January 1, 2015. He was elected by acclamation. Also accepted by acclamation was Sharrock Dermot as Chancellor. Jeff Heil presented the endowment fund document committee report. After some discussion, motions and seconds were made to accept the final document.

Jim Paul presented a 2015 budget report that had been previously approved by the Vestry. Basic changes for the new budget included an increase in salary for Fr. Frank and a budgeted amount for an audit due to a change in treasurer. Fr. Frank recognized Brett Schwab, Rebeca DePriest, and Carole Pryor for their years of service on the Vestry. Jim Paul was thanked for his expert guidance as Treasurer during his service.

A special thanks was given to Ann Turney for her gift of the new church organ. Renee White and Rebecca DePriest will sponsor the youth group. Also, a celebration of the Holy Eucharist in Spanish started Saturday, December 6, and is scheduled every other Saturday in the chapel.

Fr. Frank commented he was “blessed to have completed 10 years at the church” and he encouraged each communicant to participate as teachers for the younger generation.

On January 16, 2005 a man from San Antonio, Texas and his blonde headed wife came to Joplin, MO to take his position as Rector and Priest of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. Little did he know that the community of Joplin was waiting with open arms to welcome him into their midst.

It was not long before Fr. Frank rolled up his sleeves and began to get acquainted with each of the parish members. Of course, Debi, with her sweet smile, won hearts.

Some of the accomplishments that we (Nancy Messick and Secretary Mary Sparks) noted since he has come to St. Philip’s:

1. New windows in the lower section of the parish hall on the south side of the building 2. New double doors on the south side entrance 3. A new organ 4. God’s garden 5. Enlarged community outreach 6. Playground 7. Spanish service 8. Golf Tournament Charity outreach 9. Thursday midday service 10. Eucharistic Visitors making communion visits to homebound parishioners 11. Improved youth involvement 12. Recognizing “Saints” days with extra HE 13. Assisted Altar Guild with sorting in sanctuary, buying travel kits, and a work table 14. New ceiling tile in Sacristy, Choir room, Acolyte room 15. St. Margaret’s remodeled 16. Actively involved in choir and special numbers on various occasions 17. Interfaith Panel discussions 18. “Lunch bunch” meetings 19. Men’s Bible studies 20. Sunday night compline services 21. New Years’ Eve service in a congregation members home with Communion at midnight. 22. Recycling emphasis

These are just a few of the many changes that have taken place. Voices from parish members state he has been actively involved in activities that take place…such as the Bazaar, the Shrimp fest, painting, lighting the oven pilot light, painting stripes on parking lot, picking up nails in the driveway entrance so no one would get flat tires, assisting with the concrete repair of one of the driveway entrances, and many other “minor” details one would not think a rector might do.

Fr. Frank has stated that the ministry here at St. Philip’s is a “team effort” and all are encouraged to participate. He also has an “open door” policy that if anyone needs to talk, pray, cry, or rejoice, he is always available. Communion is a special time of special, personalized blessings upon those with special needs in addition to receiving the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Fr. Frank your dedication is our blooming. Thanks for 10 years at St. Philip’s. We look forward to seeing many fruitful changes and additions taking place in the years to come.

St. Philip’s is on Facebook! Many St. Philip’s members use Facebook, but you may not be aware that St. Philip’s has its own Facebook page. We’d like to fix that. According to a 2012 Public Religion Research Institute Survey, 40 percent of Americans report that their church has an active Facebook Page. Only about 10 percent of people post something about their church in their own Facebook updates. There is a perception that Facebook is something that the kids do. This is not the whole case. Forty-five percent of Facebook users are 26 and older. And the fastest growing segment right now is women over the age of 55. Most Facebookers have long-established networks of friends and like to keep in touch with friends and family. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and many more software applications (“apps”) collectively make up the field of social media. The whole point of social media is to be social. While it's a good idea to put your cellphone away during the service, there's nothing to stop you taking a picture of church activities involving friends, and posting pictures your pictures directly to the St. Philip's Facebook page. In fact we would encourage you to do it.

If you’re a Facebook user already, “like” the St. Philip’s page and receive news updates and interesting images from the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. If you haven’t already done it – search for St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Joplin, Missouri on Facebook and click the button that says “Like”! The Web address of the Facebook Page is https://www.facebook.com/StPhilipsJoplin/

Follow us and hear great music, view some fantastic images and read interesting and amusing news items posted to your Facebook timeline. You are invited to share your activities with us. There were a great many cellphone cameras being used at the 2014 Christmas services but only a couple of people shared their pictures – let us all see them and share the joy and wonder. Your pictures and contributions can make the church more welcoming and perhaps encourage people to attend. Share why a particular sermon or message, or how the baptism on Sunday was particularly meaningful. Share how someone was blessed by a recent mission, conference, or trip. We are “the church,” and our stories can be the church’s stories. Robert Smith Chair, Communications Committee
