Christ Lives In Us!

[The following are the reflections of Sister Mary Luke, SL (1900 - 2006) who was one of the few women to attend and participate in the Second Vatican Council. She helped write the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World. She was also a friend of Thomas Merton.] Sister writes: “I would like to suggest a few minutes of reflec-tion on the meaning of who are. OUR IDENTITY COMES FROM GOD All who profess Christian faith affirm that each person is of worth beyond price in God’s eyes. Karl Rahner, the great Jesuit theologian, says that every single human being is an ‘event’ of the absolute, radical, free self-communication of God. If I believe this, it makes a great difference in my life, both in my prayer and action, because God is forever and always communicating God’s Self to me in a way that is free and liberating and unmerited and forgiving. The hear and core of our faith is this recognition that we are constituted by and of God, that this is our deepest identity. There are numerous Scriptural references to this great reality of our identity. We are temples of the Holy Spirit; we share the divine life; the kingdom of God is within us, etc. Or as the 14th century theologian Meister Eckhart said, ‘God reached into Himself and Created me.’

GOD IS PRESENT IN OUR PRAYER We affirm these truths, but, in order that they not be just words for us, we need space and time to assimilate them afresh. This is a particular role of contemplative prayer, which allows us to savor with gratitude and awareness the gift of our own identity and that of others. As I grow older, there is a difference in my prayer that has to do with knowing. Now, I know differently that I did when younger. Specifically, I know God is present in a different way, in a deeper way. The knowing of this presence in the way I now know it is the whole of prayer for me. JESUS ENERGISES US FROM WITHIN Jesus Christ is the life-giving reality that continues to motivate and energize me. I have a sense of God living within me. The Trinitarian concept that God is within us is expressed in dif-ferent ways, sometimes through Christ, sometimes through the Spirit, and sometimes through the creative force, but all of this energizes us in a way that I think nothing else can. As I age, I have gotten to know better this presence of God moving into me, communicating to me. I know better now that it’s true. It’s more of a constant now and yet it is not anything different from what anybody could know. I hope that it will continue to deepen so it will become the constant atmosphere of my life. It isn’t yet, but I’m working on it.” [The Good News according to Sister Mary Luke!] THE KNOWING OF GOD’S PRESENCE IS THE WHOLE OF PRAYER! Father Bob Grib, S.J. - RCIA - Thank you, Sister Mary Luke Tobin, SL. You are one wise lady!

Rosaries for the Missions

Our Lady asks us to pray the rosary daily. The missions are in need of rosaries. If you have extra rosaries you don’t use, please drop off in the “Rosaries for Mis-sions” box in the back of the Church. We also accept broken rosaries. They will be repaired or used to make new ones. Your help is greatly appreciated.

The 2009 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS

“…DO ALL FOR THE GLORY OF GOD.” (1 Cor. 10:31)

Many of our parishioners either have or soon will receive a mailing from Cardinal George. He will ask that you make a pledge to the 2009 Annual Catholic Ap-peal. The Appeal not only funds the operations of the Archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish, for example, Pastoral Council, CRHP, Elizabeth Ministry, Ministry of Care, to name a few. This year, the theme of the Appeal is, “Do all for the glory of God”. Clearly, everything that we do to live out our faith gives glory to God. Our contributions to our parish and our Archdiocese multiply the glory that we give to our God by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Also, when our parish reaches its goal of $59,851, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish. Please prayerfully consider a pledge to the 2009 Annual Catholic Appeal.

Tireless Discipleship...The Gospel of Mark, unlike those of Matthew and Luke, has no infancy narrative, nor does it have a lengthy prologue to introduce it, as John’s Gospel does. In Mark’s account, one could say, Jesus hits the ground running. The stories we’ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today’s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don’t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world.

St. Juliana School Offers the Rainbow Program St. Juliana School will be offering the RAINBOWS program again this year. The aim of RAINBOWS is to furnish our children and adolescents with an understand-ing of their new family unit, to assist in building a stronger sense of self esteem, and to direct them toward a healthy resolution of the changes that have taken place in their personal lives. A child is affected by the loss and change which oc-cur when there is a separation, divorce, remarriage, death of a parent or sibling, blended families, or adoption. Every human being, no matter age, needs and deserves to be supported as they experience changes in their life. Too many people are left alone to mourn in si-lence. The most compassionate response is to offer guidance and direction during their journey toward acceptance of their loss. This is the foundation that RAIN-BOWS was built on. We believe it does not need to hurt forever. In order for the healing to take place, every bereaved person should have a listener to help work through and wrestle with the intense emotions of changes in their lives. RAIN-BOWS provides this person through the trained facilitator who becomes the be-reaved loving listener. Since it is necessary for emotional healing to take place after a significant loss, the purpose of support groups is to provide an opportunity to share their feelings with people their own age which is supported by a trained, caring, compassionate adult. Our goal is to help children support each other; to put their feelings into words; to work through the changes and frustrations; and to build a stronger sense of self-esteem. If you would like to sign your child up or have questions regarding the program please call Diana Laske 773.631.2256 or email [email protected].
