S W G Saint Jerome was the great translator of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into the Latin language. His “Vulgate” edition of the Sacred Scriptures remained the “go-to” text for 1,200 years. On his feast day this past September, Pope Francis declared that the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be observed as the “Sunday of the Word of God.” Pope Francis wrote in his motu proprio Aperuit Illis:

Devoting a specific Sunday of the liturgical year to the word of God can enable the Church to experience anew how the risen Lord opens up for us the treasury of his word and enables us to proclaim its unfathomable riches before the world…. Regular reading of sacred Scripture and the celebration of the Eucharist make it possible for us to see ourselves as part of one another. As Christians, we are a single people, making our pilgrim way through history, sustained by the Lord, present in our midst, who speaks to us and nourishes us. A day devoted to the Bible should not be seen as a yearly event but rather a year-long event, for we urgently need to grow in our knowledge and love of the Scriptures and of the risen Lord, who continues to speak his word and to break bread in the community of believers. For this reason, we need to develop a closer relationship with sacred Scripture; otherwise, our hearts will remain cold and our eyes shut, struck as we are by so many forms of blindness. Sacred Scripture and the sacraments are thus inseparable. When the sacraments are introduced and illumined by God’s word, they become ever more clearly the goal of a process whereby Christ opens our minds and hearts to acknowledge his saving work. We should always keep in mind the teaching found in the Book of Revelation: the Lord is standing at the door and knocking. If anyone should hear his voice and open for him, he will come in and eat with them (cf. 3:20). Christ Jesus is knocking at our door in the words of sacred Scripture. If we hear his voice and open the doors of our minds and hearts, then he will enter our lives and remain ever with us.

Whenever you read the Bible, simply ask yourself: “what is God saying to me here and now?” It is the living Word of God and not just a historical document. Lent is just a month away… start thinking about forming a small group Bible study or making “lectio divina” a part of your daily prayer life. Thankfully over the past fifty years there have been many books written and programs developed to help Catholics read and interpret the Bible within the context of the living tradition of the Church. Let’s avail ourselves of these resources to become ever better disciples of the Lord Jesus!

“Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”

ARCHDIOCESAN SYNOD

This past Tuesday evening, the St. Louis Park city council unanimously voted to approve the construction of our new facility! This is the culmination of many years of dreaming, planning, and hard work. The city staff, our city council representative Margaret Rog, and Mayor Jake Spano were all very supportive and appreciated our efforts to reach out to neighbors and address their concerns. I would like to thank our city’s staff and elected leaders for their helpfulness over this past year and a half. Many thanks to our architects at 292 Design Studio, Loucks engineers, and our contractor Rochon Corporation for guiding us through this approval process. They have done extensive work in the city before, which was part of our selection criteria. Their knowledge and good relationships helped us design a plan that is a win-win for everyone. We need one more approval concerning water run-off from the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District which should be forthcoming soon. I’d also like to commend our building committee: chairman Bernie Grutsch, Dennis Dylong, Ed Getsch, Lane Hersey, and Jon Yanta. They helped me sift through the technicalities of construction, reach out to neighbors, and keep the design process on track and within budget—I really wanted a dome, a few mosaics, and some marble arches! I’d also like to publicly acknowledge our former pastor Fr. Thomas Dufner for initiating this project so many years ago. He and his collaborators laid the groundwork for this project and endured a storm of criticism. We are grateful to Sarah Mealey and others who worked over subsequent years to reduce tensions and move us towards the good relations we now have with our neighbors. Thanks to all of you for your prayers and your continued generosity! Let’s keep moving from our amazing current pledge total of $4.85 million to our stretch goal of $5 million! If we had big, bronze bells in our church towers, I would ring them for joy! (Hmmm… maybe the next capital campaign??? After the new Nazareth House for our youth group and young adults!)

"R C C , O M T " “No marriage is an island; you need others to help you grow in faith so that you can pass that faith on to your spouse, children, and grandchildren. God wants to use marriages to help build up and strengthen the Church through helping to build Catholic culture. Join us as we talk about concrete steps to build Catholic culture in your home and in the homes of those around you!” ~ Andrew Wagenbach

Andrew Wagenbach is the Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Minnesota. Andrew and his wife, Coreen have been in parish ministry for 12 years, leading sacramental prep, youth ministry, and family formation programs. Seeing the need for full family formation, they have dedicated themselves to building a Catholic culture in their own family with four sons (ages 9 to 3)and helping pass that on to other families.

Andrew and Coreen met and earned degrees in Theology and Catechetics at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio. They believe in and have been inspired to work in parish ministry because they are both products of it; during summer youth programs, they found their own relationships with Christ, allowing Him to lead them since. They love the fullness of truth within the Catholic faith and sharing it in any way that the Holy Spirit inspires them to.
