THE APPROACH

PRELUDE“Nimrod” from Enigma Variations Edward Elgar ... Stephen Boda, organPROCESSIONAL HYMN please standNo. 659 “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” Melita Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep: O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea.O Christ, the Lord of hill and plain O’er which our traffic runs amain By mountain pass or valley low; Wherever, Lord, thy brethren go, Protect them by thy guarding hand From every peril on the land.O Spirit, whom the Father sent To spread abroad the firmament; O Wind of heaven, by thy might Save all who dare the eagle’s flight, And keep them by thy watchful care From every peril in the air.O Trinity of love and power, all people shield in danger’s hour; from rock and tempest, fire and foe, protect them wheresoe’er they go; thus ever more shall rise to thee glad praise from air, and land, and sea.

LAST POST ... Paul Sanvidotti, trumpet

MOMENT OF SILENT REMEMBRANCE

REVEILLE ... Paul Sanvidotti, trumpet

NATIONAL ANTHEMNo. 524, verse 1 O CanadaO Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all of us command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, the True North, strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

PRAYER OF APPROACH PLEASE BE SEATED

THE LORD’S PRAYER SAY TOGETHEROur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

WELCOME

MINISTRY OF MUSIC CHOIR ONLY“In Flanders Fields” Sean King ... Choir School, Sanctuary Choir In Flanders fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place; and in the sky the larks, still bravely singing, fly scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, loved, and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: to you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders fields. Commissioned by TEMC Choir School 2014

THE WORD OF GODHYMN OF PREPARATION PLEASE STAND

(Sunday School classes will be held as usual during the 9:15 service. Please proceed upstairs via the southeast stairway.)

“O Valiant Hearts” O valiant hearts, who to your glory came Through dust of conflict and through battle flame; Tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved, Your memory hallowed in the land you loved.Proudly you gathered, rank on rank to war, As who had heard God’s message from afar; All you had hoped for, all you had, you gave To save mankind–yourself you scorned to save.Splendid you passed, the great surrender made; Into the light that nevermore shall fade; Deep your contentment in that blest abode, Who wait the last clear trumpet-call of God.O risen Lord, O Shepherd of our dead, Whose Cross has bought them, and whose star has led, In glorious hope their proud and sorrowing land Commits her children to Thy gracious hand.

SCRIPTURE READINGRomans 8:31-39 ... Sara Reesor (9:15 a.m.) ... Robert Positano (11:00 a.m.)What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed inter-cedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

SERMON“Who Stands For Us?”

THE RESPONSEOFFERING

OFFERING ANTHEM CHOIR ONLY“Crossing Over” Robertson ... Voce Unite, Sanctuary Choir Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts. Shut not thy merciful ears to our prayer, but spare us, Lord most holy. Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me. Write, from henceforth: blessed are the dead that die in the Lord. Even so saith the spirit, for they rest from their labours.Of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, For Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, They comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me, In the presence of mine enemies; Thou hast anointed my head with oil; My cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord, Forever, forever.

CLOSING HYMNNo. 806 “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” St. AnneO God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home:under the shadow of thy throne thy saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defence is sureBefore the hills in order stood, or earth received its frame, from everlasting thou art God, to endless years the same.A thousand ages, in thy sight, are like an evening gone, short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun.Time like an ever-rolling stream soon bears us all away; we fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be thou our guide while troubles last, and our eternal home.
