From Pastor Randy… 28 the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings'

palaces. (Prov. 30:28 ESV)

I actually miss them. Some people think that they are a nuisance, especially if they get into the house, but I miss them. And I really do hope that they will be back soon. Over a several years now we have had at least two geckos living outside of our bathroom window. They were smart enough to choose that window because the light gets turned on there more on a regular basis. This makes for fertile hunting ground for the geckos as all matter of insects come to the light; and bad luck for a good number of insects. It also makes for an interesting show from the inside. We have regular gecko sightings and gecko watching parties every time one of the grandkids comes over. The geckos are always true to form and will pounce upon prey and sometimes fight over a moth. And even though our grandkids have seen the show many times, they squeal and applaud with delight every time. I must admit I have little to no remorse for the moths. But I do like the geckos. Since winter came on strongly we have not had any gecko sightings. For a while the geckos still showed up. Why waste a prime opportunity in a well-lit window? But they have been missing in action for some time now and I miss them. (Just to be clear here, I am not asking you to bring over any extra you might have. Keep them. Enjoy your own show.) I am simply ready to see them back in action again. It is a shame that we all too often don’t truly consider the value of something until we have it no more. What that says is that we often don’t appreciate what we have until we don’t. One way that really shows is when we underappreciate those around us. Consider how much we don’t just like, but

business, Marshall moved and Harry Heil seconded for the meeting to be adjourned. Motion carried. Respectfully submitted, Mary Lea Pfenninger, Council Member

Time & Talents

In an effort to simplify things, we are going to try to do time & talent a bit differently from now on.

Instead of handing out forms yearly, please fill one out any

time throughout the year. Time & Talent forms will be located on the shelf in the Narthex as well as available in the office or

you may request one be e-mailed to you.

Forms should be filled out anytime you have any personal information that has changed or you would like to change your

volunteer or committee statuses.

We are glad the construction is finally done and look forward to new and exciting projects to come in 2018! We hope you

can join us and help out!

St. John’s Annual Meeting Minutes January 28, 2018

The meeting was called to order by Council President Mark Stroman at 11:25 AM following regular services. Pastor was asked and then led us in prayer. There were 47 members present which represented a quorum. The minutes of the January 2017 meeting were presented. Mary Lea moved and Marshal seconded that the minutes be accepted as presented. Motion carried. The nominating committee presented their report and nominated Keith Cornish, Stanly Oehlke and Christy Paulsgrove as the next nominating committee for 2018. Lynette Henson moved and Wanda Cornish seconded to accept the committee as presented. Motion carried. The nominating committee then presented its nominees for the 2 open council positions. Merle Otwell and Gary Deskin were nominated. Mark then opened the floor for nominations. Hearing none after three calls, he then asked for a motion for nominations to cease and the two names brought forward to be accepted by acclamation. Walter Pfenninger moved and Leslie Zillig seconded. Motion carried. The president then recognized Marshall’s years of service. President Stroman then presented the 2018 budget for the consideration of the congregation. He noted the renovations were paid out of our regular account and the savings. We did not have to use one of our CD’s. After discussion, Walter Pfenninger moved and Dorothy Forester seconded that the 2018 budget be accepted. Motion carried. Pastor then thanked and recognized Mark for his years of service. Wanda Cornish, the took the floor and outlined many activities that Pastor Randy and Ginia do that is above and beyond their scope of work. Their efforts were recognized and they were thanked. Wendi and Eileen were also recognized for their service and leadership in their positions. With no further

often need, to see a little appreciation from others. Consider too how often we fail in letting others know we do appreciate them. These don’t have to be grand overt gestures, often just a subtle smile or kind word will do. To do so is a lot like casting some light onto someone’s darkness. And when you really think about it, how difficult is it to let them know that you still care and they still matter? Imagine what it would be like if God just forgot about us. How devastating that would be! There is always the much greater chance that we have been pretty good at forgetting about Him. The good news is that God is always seeking us. God will not forget about us. God desires to see us and to know us and to hear from us. Of course God also wants us to see, and know, and hear Him too. But that doesn’t mean we should underappreciate God. Maybe we should consider seeking God a little more, both inside and outside the house. God is always calling us to the light as well. And I would bet that we make him smile each time we squeal and applaud with delight at seeing Him again. As I am sure that God is delighted each time we show appreciation for one of His people. Pastor Randy 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things

will be added to you. (Matt. 6:33 ESV)

Dear St. John’s Lutheran Church, Please accept my sincere thanks for the generous donation made to our agency. 2017 was an extremely exciting, but challenging year for us. We completed a new office expansion at the Women’s Crisis Center last spring. The expansion allowed us to add more staff to serve more victims and also enabled us to add more bedrooms to the shelter proper. We also received funding for three new programs to begin last fall. The first was a housing project for homeless persons with disabilities; the second was a transitional housing project for victims of domestic or sexual violence, and the third was to develop and implement a community-wide response to sexual violence. And there was Hurricane Harvey. We suffered damage at the Shelter, thankfully our insurance covered most of our losses, but the people we serve were impacted in a terrible way. Our phone began ringing immediately from individuals and families who suddenly found themselves homeless because their housing was either damaged or destroyed, and the calls continue today. We are juggling our resources to assist as many as we can, while working with a housing market that was not adequate before the storm. We are determined to be stronger and more committed to our mission, our community, and the individuals that we serve because of our challenges we face as well as the support we’ve received. Thank you for being a long-time supporter of our agency and believing in the work we do. Sincerely, Ginny Stafford Chief Executive Officer, Mid-Coast Family Services Dear Church Family, Thank you so much for the warm welcome we received last Sunday as we officially joined St. John’s! We are very blessed to have found such a sweet church family. Everyone’s kind words and the thoughtful reception reminded us of what we already knew… we love you all and are proud to call St. John’s our church home. Love in Christ, Amy, Travis & Troy Lee

Lenten meal on March 7. The menu was discussed. World Day of Prayer will be held at our church on March 2 at Noon. Community is invited. Under old business the Council is still gathering sample building use policies to review and approve for use of our facilities with our new kitchen area. Until that time facility use is limited to members only. Under new business the Council discussed the need to replace the central AC/Heat unit at the parsonage along with some electrical work. Stanley moved and Randy seconded that we get this repaired at a cost not to exceed $8,000 . Motion Carried. It was also discussed that Pastor and Wendi have noticed termites in the parish hall and her office. Our current exterminator does not handle this. Christy moved and Keith seconded that we contact Bugmobile to get an estimate to treat this and an estimate to provide quarterly services to the church and parsonage. Motion carried. The next Council meeting will be March 13 at 6:30 pm. Keith moved the meeting be adjourned. Meeting was adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer. Respectfully Submitted, Christy Paulsgrove Church Council Secretary
