So, pull up a chair and prepare to go one-on-one with Jesus. It promis-es to be an illuminating conversation you won’t be able to forget. See you Sunday.

Grace and peace,

From the beautiful sunrise to the spectacular flowered cross, our wor-ship this past Sunday reflected the joy of the risen Christ. He is risen, indeed! Alleluia!

Like those first followers of Je-sus, we can hardly take in what the resurrection means – not only for Him, but for ourselves as well. As the Gospels remind us, Jesus hung around for a few weeks, popping up here and there to help His followers grasp the hope and promise of His presence again.

While there is a lot written by others about Jesus, Jesus had plenty to say for Himself. And those words take on even richer meaning in light of the resurrection. So, during April and May, we’re going to listen to Jesus’ own words as John records them.

The Gospel of John offers us perhaps the most intimate under-standing of Jesus’ identity through His own words. Seven times, Jesus describes Himself with an “I AM” statement:

“I am the bread of life” (John 6:35).

“I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). “I am the gate (for the sheep)” (John 10:9). “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11). “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). “I am the true vine” (John 15:1).

In His own words, Jesus offered us the best way of understanding His identity and what He desires to share with us. If you want to know who Jesus is, listen to the words He used about Himself. Through Jesus’ words, we’ll gain a new understand-ing not only of who Jesus was and is, but how that knowledge can help us to experience Him, trust Him and follow Him.

We’ll begin this week with His statement, “I am the light of the world.” From old Nicodemus in a late-night conversation to His disci-ples huddling behind locked doors on that first Easter, Jesus had a way of turning on the light and helping people see more about God, more about themselves.
