PASTOR’S PARISHABLES
Sacraments of initiation are a feature of the Easter Sea-
son, like the Confirmations & full/first Communions at the
Easter Vigil & now Confirmations & 1st Communions this
Saturday/Sunday. We welcome Bishop Quinn & 11 of our
number, now fully initiated, confirmed members. Each
time we celebrate Confirmation it becomes more obvious
that sponsors are a crucial part of initiation & discipleship:
parents, 1st of all, who in truth sponsor & godparent their
child's vulnerable Christian life from baptism, & now
Confirmation sponsors whose role is being rediscovered &
enabled—& required—in our programs. Catechists too are
vital parts of the process of initiation. We thank sponsors
& catechists who gave their time & themselves for the
sake of these Catholics’ faith. We’re inspired by the
evidence of their mentoring & evangelizing in our 1st
communicants & confirmands.
It was the hands of Christ, still bearing the marks of the
crucifixion, that proved the presence of the Risen One to
the 12 locked in the upper room. That was last Sunday’s
gospel. The 1st & 2
nd Scriptures also mentioned hands. I
mentioned the hand of God in a window at St. Mary’s &
forgot to mention one in a very prominent position, but
subtle, in SS Peter & Paul’s windows: It’s above the
dominant image of the Good Shepherd in the west wall of
the sanctuary. It’s 1 of 3 symbols representing the Blessed
Trinity: The hand is a common scriptural symbol of God
the Father (see Proverbs 1:24, Sirach 10:4, 2 Maccabees
7:31; Psalm 98:1). It’s often shown emerging from a
cloud—as in our window—for mystery. (Its companion
symbols, representing the Son & the Spirit, are a lamb
with a victory banner & a descending dove.)
“Violent anti-Semitic acts on rise globally,” we read with
sadness. In this current climate, it’s all the more important
to point out the statement printed in our seasonal missal on
page 29, in the Good Friday liturgy between the text of the
Passion & the Solemn Intercessions. It was so placed
because John’s version of the Passion, proclaimed every
Good Friday, is especially problematic in the way it refers
broadly on a number of occasions to “the Jews.” It could
easily & mistakenly be interpreted as Scripture blaming
Jews for the death of Christ. In case you didn’t notice the
statement, I repeat it here. It comes from the U.S. Bishops’
Committee on Ecumenical & Interreligious Affairs.
“The message of the liturgy in proclaiming the passion
narratives in full is to enable the assembly to see vividly
the love of Christ for each person, despite their sins, a
love that even death could not vanquish. The crimes dur-
ing the Passion of Christ cannot be attributed indiscrimi-
nately to all Jews of that time, nor to Jews today. The
Jewish people should not be referred to as though reject-
ed or cursed, as if this view followed from Scripture. The
Church ever keeps in mind that Jesus, his mother Mary, &
the Apostles all were Jewish. As the Church has always
held, Christ freely suffered his passion & death because of
the sins of all, that all might be saved.”
The Catholic church building in Guckeen has stood
unused & deteriorating for some time now. The SS Peter
& Paul parish as the “successor” parish holds the title to
the building & the property & so has responsibility for it.
It has been discussed from time to time at our Finance
Council’s meetings. Until now, I have not been motivated
to handle this. For some time after the parish was closed
(in about 2003) & the building decommissioned, it was
leased to a group that gathered around Fr. Verdick who
used it as the setting for Mass. They provided for its
upkeep, including insurance. Now that it stands empty it
requires attention from us. It would be imprudent &
irreverent to simply watch it in demise—& pay for
insurance on it.
Finally, we’re taking action. 1 of the 1st steps is keeping
you informed. Another, of course, is keeping the Bishop
informed & handling this according to Church procedures
& requirements. We’re taking this 1 step at a time.
We do have the go-ahead from the diocese to proceed.
As required by Church law, we will now ask for a decree
from the Bishop to relegate the building to “Profane but
not Sordid use” which he grants after consultation with the
Presbyteral Council (made up of priests chosen to assist a
bishop in an advisory capacity in the administra-tion of a
diocese). Permission of the College of Consul-tors &
Diocesan Finance Council is required before the
demolition or sale of an unused church building &
“alienating” the property. We’ve learned that the Church
prefers razing but we’re looking at options. Ultimately, a
sale contract would be reviewed by the diocesan attorney
& conditions for future use would be included.
All religious artifacts, of course, are removed from a
closed church building. In our case, much of this has al-
ready been done—most notably the windows installed in
SS Peter & Paul’s social hall. There is some money that
remains from the Guckeen parish account, untouched, in a
separate account of SS Peter & Paul parish. After the
expense of removing & reinstalling the windows, that ac-
count has remained at about $10,000, which will now help
defray the expense involved in this disposition.
This will be a slow process but one that at least now is
finally begun. We’ll keep you informed & certainly
welcome any questions or ideas from you as we go along.
In this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal, currently:
At SSPP 37 (13.5%) have given $7,380 (42.1%) of goal.
At StM 10 (12.8%) have given $2,395 (41.2%) of goal.
