Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ (On Care for Our Common Home) CHAPTER THREE – The Human Roots of the Ecological Crisis

Pope Francis begins this chapter with an observation:

It would hardly be helpful to describe the symptoms without

acknowledging the human origins of the ecological crisis. A certain

way of understanding human life and activity has gone awry, to the

serious detriment of the world around us. Should we not pause and

consider this? At this stage, I propose that we focus on the dominant

technocratic paradigm and the place of human beings and of human

action in the world.

Scam Emails Increasing

The Archdiocese warns of a new wave of scam emails using archbishop’s name. During the COVID-19 crisis, email scams have been multiplying, and the Archdiocese of Washington is again warning priests and parishioners to be wary of recent bogus emails from senders falsely claiming to be Archbishop Gregory or parish priests that sometimes seek donations.

Experts warn people to be wary of unsolicited email appeals for financial donations, to treat email attachments with caution, and to be careful about clicking on links in email messages. They say if you’ve clicked on a wrong link or realize that you have provided a password, user name or other personal information in response to a scam, to change your password immediately. Page 8: Sunday, May 31, 2020 Pentecost Sunday...2020/05/31  · Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9 Daniel 3 2 Corinthians 12:11-13 John 3:16-18 Sunday, May 31, 2020 Pentecost Sunday This week’s readings:

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. It is the birthday of the Church. The Church is in a very different place today than it was in the upper room after the Resurrection. To put it bluntly, the Church has problems, major structural and personal problems. Actually, I think the Church has only one real problem. Now, it might seem overly – perhaps even dangerously – simplistic to make that assertion. Hear me out, at least. I maintain the one and only major problem with the Catholic Church is that individual Catholics have not been transformed. When individuals have not been transformed, structures stand much less of a chance of being changed and aligned with the mercy of God.

I am not talking about having the finished product, that is, Catholics in the heights of mystical oneness. Nor is this to suggest there are no transformed Catholics at all. We have some, but they are scattered here and there. Rather, I am simply asking people to get on the journey, intentionally and consciously. Individual Catholics may have had religious experiences. But, according to the Pew Forum, many Catholics are not even sure that one can have a personal relationship with God. Still, those who do have religious experiences have not seemed to be open to transforming their lives. They have not had a mystical experience of God, one that is immediate and changes you. Without that transformative experience, or, better, relationship, egocentricity remains. That is what I mean by being untransformed. The abuse crisis, ultimately a crisis of ordained ministry and its clerical privilege, was perpetrated by untransformed priests and untransformed bishops, aided by untransformed lay persons. There are “faithful” members of the Church – ordained and lay alike – who care more for wealth, power, adulation or some personal ideological cause than the Gospel of Christ Crucified. In a December 19, 2019 article in the National Catholic Reporter, Fr. Peter Daly writes, “When I was in the seminary in Rome, we called them ‘Alpiners,’ the ‘climbers’ among our fellow seminarians who were ambitious to climb up the corporate ladder of the church. They had a secret (or not so secret) ambition to be a bishop or a Vatican official…Ambition is one of the worst

Mystical Word

written by L.J. Milone, Director of Faith Formation, [email protected]

and most destructive features of clericalism…It comes from a desire to dominate others…. It is a feature of megalomania and narcissism. It betrays not talent, but insecurity. Ambition for authority shows an internal emptiness that can only be filled by external deference, titles, honor and power.”

Fr. Daly continues, “This self-aggrandizing ambition is seen in the lives of many clerics who, like Theodore McCarrick and Michael Bransfield, climb the church ladder. They often talk about being humble, but they are not at all humble. They spend enormous amounts of money on themselves…Bransfield and McCarrick both ran the Papal Foundation to funnel money to Rome and thereby gained a lot of influence in the church…Clericalism loves special clothes; cassocks and capes, lace and

silk, birettas and miters. The fancy clothes separate clerics from others…The pretentions of a Cardinal Raymond Burke parading around in his watered silk ‘cappa magna’ (big cape) and fancy lace surplices would be laughable if he did not mean for it to be taken so seriously.”

The way of Jesus takes us on a path diametrically opposed to ecclesiastical careerism, or, really, any sort of careerism that seeks domination, wealth, or prestige. Any seeking of these ego projects will, ultimately, lead one away from the crucified God revealed in Jesus. All it takes is to surrender to God, to let God be God instead of money or control or whatever.

The transformed, those living the Gospel, care more for the divine than wealth or power or public praise. They can admit when they’re wrong. They can see past their blindness. They can see that many words can describe the Mystery. They can put aside pride. They hold formulations of the truth lightly. They never see themselves as superior to anyone. They know people – really any of God’s creatures – are more important than ideas. They can relax into God’s presence.

There is hope for all the untransformed people in the Church, including the ones mentioned above, and it is not because of anything they can do. It is because God is mercy, and when we know that, we are never the same. Then, when more of us know that, the Church will never be the same. The way to change the Church is as simple as it is difficult: die with Christ and let God raise us up.

If you ever have any comments regarding Mystical Word, you are most welcome to contact L. J. Milone.
