“Let the river run Let all the dreamers

Wake the nation Come, the New Jerusalem”

Thirty years ago a singer-songwriter by the name of Carly Simon penned these lyrics for a well-known film. The song is a kind of anthem, a poem to the men and women who work tirelessly, and often anonymously, in the offices of New York City. It became incredibly popular, and is often used as clarion call to try the impossible, to brook the impediments to a dream.

As if Jesus’ resurrection wasn’t improbable enough to our human minds, now the disciples are on a course to convince nations of this incredible fact: to reveal to the masses Jesus’ saving message that God triumphs over sin, mercy over judgement, love over hate. It’s easy to look at the readings after Easter Sunday as an afterthought. Christ won; He returned; the 11 spread the good news; and here we are. Yet, it is important to remember the trials of the early church, the immense barriers, (geographical, political, societal), they faced. Still they prevailed. They prevailed against all odds because, as John states, “God’s dwelling is with the human race.” The new covenant, sealed with Jesus’ sacrifice, is one bound with love. It was God’s love for us that sent Jesus into our world and his love that, in turn, won our release from the hold of sin. It is this love that Jesus commands his disciples to share. More than 2,000 years later we are also commanded to “wake the nations,” to bring forth a New Jerusalem in our homes, workplaces and communities. This isn’t easy, especially now. Scandal and shame have rocked our church, but still we work to bring God’s love to fruition, still we dream of that city on a hill. You, the good people of St. James, bring others to Christ through your witness. The Easter vigil Mass revealed this as we welcomed men, women and children who felt that love. You are that shining city. You keep the work of the Gospels present in the lives of so many. You are the inspiration to the vocations of my brother priests, our Sisters, deacons and me. Today’s readings encourage us to be resilient, to be loving, to be dreamers. Let us open the rivers’ floodgates towards our own New Jerusalem. Our Volunteer Recognition Dinner was a great success. I hope everyone had as good a time as I did. It was our sincere pleasure to take this opportunity to serve you! Thank you to my staff who worked to provide a comfortable and welcoming event, and to my brother priests, our deacons and Sisters who joined me in recognition of the wonderful work done by our dedicated volunteers. Look for pictures in next week’s bulletin and on our Facebook page. ~Fr. Posey

St. James Social Outreach Committee Honors Janet Qualters’ Legacy of Service The St. James Catholic Church Social Outreach Committee held a reception on Thursday, May 9, honoring Janet Qualters, a longtime volunteer in our parish and the Falls Church community. Janet retired from her position as head of the St. James’ Social Outreach Committee in 2018, in which she had given 25 years of continuous service to the Church and the Falls Church community. Among her many acts of service to the community was her establishment, along with Nancy Stock, of the St. James Food Distribution Program in 1991. The program, held on the first

Friday of each month, serves over 130 families in the Falls Church community by distributing staple foods, dairy products, fruit, and vegetables. Drawing volunteers from across the parish, its popularity and importance are such that students from Bishop O’Connell’s AP Spanish class are regular workers at this event. “Through her time at St. James, Janet has truly embodied Christ’s command to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and to care for the least of our brothers and sisters,” said Fr. Posey. “I thank Janet for all that she did for our parish and our various outreach programs, and for the care and compassion she showed to those who needed help.” Janet was a founding board member of the Falls Church Homeless Shelter, serving as a volunteer for over 22 years. From ensuring that there was enough food for breakfasts to making sure that linens and towels were laundered, to making sure there were adequate supplies of cleaning and hygiene products, Janet was a passionate supporter of the Center’s mission. Recognizing that food was a real need for the shelter, she organized a bag lunch program, with the lunches prepared by St. James parishioners as well as students from George Mason high school. “Looking back on all the years I've worked with Janet, I have not seen a more dedicated person who lives her Catholic Faith by helping those in need,” said Mary Ann Horton, Secretary of the Social Outreach Committee. “She gave of herself and asked nothing in return.”

Win the World for Jesus! Vacation Bible School July 15—19

Are you ready to Win the World for Jesus? Kids become missionaries in the Church today as they learn the virtue of zeal for souls. (Zeal for Souls is a song they will not forget either!) Each day, the kids go on an expedition with one of the saints who brought the love of Jesus and the Church to the New World. They will travel North and South America, become a pioneer of the US, travel the seas of the South Pacific and explore Mexico. Participants will visit each new land with a famous saint! The kids will also help with a global medical mission; helping doctors go to places around the world. Let’s go exploring!

Registration Forms are now available at the entrances of the church. The program’s registration form can be found at https://bit.ly/2ZNflbv. Please contact Sister Regina Rosarii McLallen, IHM, Director of Religious Education at [email protected] with any questions.
