“I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE”

Sunday May 14, 2017 Fifth Sunday of Easter

The disciples wee surprised that Jesus was going to his Father’s house and would return to take them with him. Jesus answer to their question “show us the way” was both a reminder that his disciples should trust their Master and Teacher to show them the way, and a challenge for them to recognize that Jesus had intimate knowledge of God and where God came from. Jesus made a statement that invoked the very name which God had revealed to Moses, “I am who I am,” and he made three claims which only God could make. He stated unequivocally to his disciples: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”

Jesus proclaims: I am the Way. The Lord Jesus gives us more than a road map and guide book. He personally is the way to the Father’s kingdom and we cannot miss it if we follow him. He accompanies us on our daily journey and watches over us as the good shepherd who leads and sustains us each and every step of the way. Are you in step with the Lord and do you trust in his guiding hand for life? Jesus proclaims that he is the Truth. Many can say “I have taught you the truth.” Only Jesus can say, I am the Truth. He possesses in himself the fullness of truth. Jesus claims to be one with the Father and to speak the truth which proceeds from the Father. Jesus promised his disciples that if they continued in his word, they would learn the truth and the truth would set them free. The truth which Jesus proclaims has power to set us free from ignorance, deception, and sin. Jesus embodies the truth in his person. Jesus proclaims: I am the Life. He not only shows us the path of life, he gives the kind of life which only God can give. Is there any trouble, fear, or distraction that keeps you from the perfect peace and joy of a life surrendered to Jesus Christ?

GEORGE SMITH’S HEALTH Anyone who has been a member of St. Francis Xavier parish or attended St. Francis Xavier School in the past 70 years has to know the name George Smith. George has been a fixture of the parish and school since he was 19 years old. George will be 88 years later this month! Recently, George was hospitalized for weakness in his legs and swelling. He spent several days in the ICU unit of Touro Hospital and is now at home. Presently, he has to use a walker to get around until he can gain back his strength. He is under doctor’s care and needs more tests to determine the need for further medication and treatment. George hopes to return to SFX in the very near future. Please keep him in your prayers. CEMETERY PLOTS AVAILABLE Over the past couple of years we have received several cemetery plots as donations. Two in ground plots in the Garden of Memories, one crypt in the Oaks Mausoleum (6 interments) in Metairie Cemetery, and one double-length crypt in All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery. If you are interested in obtaining one of these burial plots or more information, or make an offer by purchase of one of the available plots, please contact our business manager, Ray Massett, at the Parish Center 504-834-0340. CLARION HERALD POSTPONES PILGRIMAGE I recently met with Peter Finney, Jr., the editor of the Clarion Herald, concerning the planned pilgrimage to Ireland and London scheduled for September 4 to September 16 of this year. After considering several factors that have come up since the pilgrimage was announced, we have decided to postpone the trip until the Spring of next year. The exact time and itinerary for the pilgrimage will be announced later this year. LOURDES AND PARIS TRIP OFFERED Earlier this week I received a flyer from Msgr. Hedrick, pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary and the head of the Office of Worship, announcing that he and Msgr. Eskind of the Lafayette Diocese were putting together a trip to Lourdes and Paris this August. The trip is for one week from Monday, August 7 to Monday, August 14. The cost is $4,595 per person and includes airfare but not insurance. The trip is being arranged through Catholic Journeys and includes 3 nights in Lourdes and 3 nights in Paris. St. Francis’s Band earns ‘Superior’ rating in Sr. Hilary Simpson, O.P., Band Assessment Festival

At the Sr. Hilary Simpson, O.P. Invitational Band Assessment Festival held recently at St. Francis, the Jaguar Band performed for a rating. The other three bands in the festival that day were local high school bands. Although the St. Francis students were nervous at

first, they performed their three selections, “Heroes and Glory,” “Holy, Holy, Holy,” and “Zombie Stomp” with great verve. They earned a “Superior” rating for their performance, earning the highest scores in all categories. Director Mr. Mark Richards said he was “very proud” of them as this was their first competition in five years.
