No. 399 “God, Whose Love Is Reigning o’er Us” Lauda Anima

CALL TO WORSHIPMinster: We joyfully gather for our worship celebration on this Christian

Family Sunday, when we honour our mothers, asking that you would bless our mothers, families and church family with the light of your love.

All: With Christians through the ages, may we ever remember Jesus is the Shepherd and Guardian of our souls.

Choir: We pray that you would bless us with the gift of the Holy Spirit, so that we will live out our faith in our homes and families.

Minister: Blessed is the home when God is there and love fills every heart. All sing: Would you bless our homes and families,

Source of life who calls us here; in our world of stress and tension teach us love that conquers fear. Help us learn to love each other with a love that constant stays; teach us when we face our troubles, love’s expressed in many ways. (No. 556, v.1)

PRAYER OF APPROACH PLEASE BE SEATED

PRAYER OF CONFESSION SAY TOGETHER O gracious and loving God, we lift up our hearts in thanksgiving that you have called Christian families to proclaim the faith that is ours. On this day when we honour our mothers and grandmothers, we confess that there are times when we take those closest to us for granted, and are unappreciative of the depth of loving care that fills our lives with joy. Where there is dissention, we ask that you bring us together, where there are struggles in relationships, grant us peace, and when we ourselves are at fault, teach us your ways. We pray that as we celebrate Mother’s Day, you will pour out the gifts of the Spirit upon us, so that we will be empowered to be your faithful people, through Jesus Christ our risen Lord, your beloved Son. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGLuke 7:36-50 ... Chris DiazOne of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him—that she is a sinner.” Jesus spoke up and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Teacher,” he replied, “Speak.” “A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he canceled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the greater debt.” And Jesus said to him, “You have judged rightly.” Then turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.” Then he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” But those who were at the

4

table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”.

A NEW CREED

We are not alone, we live in God’s world.

We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit.

We trust in God.We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope.

In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us.We are not alone.

Thanks be to God.
