Sixth Sunday of Easter -Year C Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Sefton Under the care of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate 1st May 2016 6 Kerrinea Road, Sefton, NSW 2162 Parish Priest: Fr. Pat Moroney, OMI, Assistant Priest: Fr Vincent McGillicuddy, OMI Dear Parishioners, It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of what is recorded in today’s First Reading. It is perhaps the first great crisis of the new and struggling community, particularly among the very early followers of Jesus. It occasioned the calling of what is sometimes referred to as the first council of the Church, the Council of Jerusalem. The burning issue was how to deal with the Gentiles, that is the non-Jewish converts to the Faith and what to require of them to ensure the peace and unity of all, especially between the non-Jewish adherents of Christ and His Jewish followers. There were some among the Jewish followers who believed that in order to become a Christian one had first to become a Jewish follower with all that implied, including the laws of circumcision, In other words they expected all Gentiles i.e. non-Jews to first of all accept the Jewish tradition of male circumcision and then to receive Baptism to be a true a follower of Christ. It was obviously a heated discussion and differing points of view were heard. People like Peter, Paul and Barnabas who were working mainly among the gentiles, argued that faith in Jesus and His teaching was all that was required to be baptized in order to be a full member of the Christian Community and Church. When all the voices had been exhausted, and the impassioned pleas of Peter and Paul who spoke of the desire of God to save all had been heard, James the head of the Church in Jerusalem stood up, and with authority summed up the position of the early Church as follows: all that was required of those who wished to be true followers of Jesus was to have faith in Jesus and his teachings and to be baptised. This hugely important event in the early Church, as explained in today’s First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles opened the way for the spread of the gospel to all nations and to all peoples, irrespective of their background, race or culture. It also helps to explain not only our present great diversity of followers but also spirit of missionary zeal so evident in the early apostles and followers, right down to our present day. One of our proudest claims is that we are a Missionary Church, all of us, each in our own way are called to be missionaries and apostles. God bless (fr) Pat Moroney omi

1st May 2016

Dear Parishioners,

It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of what is recorded in today’s First Reading. It is perhaps the first great crisis of the new and struggling community, particularly among the very early followers of Jesus. It occasioned the calling of what is sometimes referred to as the first council of the Church, the Council of Jerusalem. Confirmation

At all Masses this weekend we welcome Confirmation candidates. Please keep the children and their parents in your prayers as they commit to the Confirmation Preparation Program. The children have prayer cards that they have been asked to distribute either before or after Mass. Please make the children feel welcome and thanks to those who accept the invitation to pray that the children prepare well and are strengthened with the gifts of the

Holy Spirit .

The James Parker Tour

All are welcome to an evening with James Parker who will speak on his experience as a former gay activist and the confusing world of modern sexuality. One of the venues is Catholic Education Centre, 3 Keating St, Lidcombe

on Tuesday May 10th 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Information regarding the event is in the church foyer.

IHM Parish School Mothers’ Day Mass

There will be a whole school gathering with Mums to celebrate Mothers’ Day on Thursday May 5th at 9:15 am.

All parishioners are welcome.

Parish Council Meeting and Church Refurbishment

At our recent Parish Council Meeting a number of items of parish concern were raised and discussed. Among the items discussed were the recent renovations to the foyer of the Church and it was agreed that they had been very successful and were well received by the parish community. Emboldened by our success to date we discussed Stage 2 of our proposed renovations. It was decided to go ahead with the relatively minor modifications to the back sacristy; this would involve a minor expansion of the sacristy area and the building of a few storage cupboards, resulting in a slight decrease in the size of the ‘crying room’ which we decided to keep. A significant issue that was discussed is the possibility of painting the interior of the Church. We also discussed replacing the current Stations of the Cross with a new set of wooden Stations which have been in storage since Fr Daniel’s time. Any comments or suggestions by parishioners on such moves would be welcomed and considered on their merits. Such comments or opinions can be made to one of the Parish Council or to one of the

priests or can be submitted to the Parish Office.

The Year of Mercy

There are still a number of copies of the “Inform” article dealing with and explaining more fully the significance and value of the on-going Year of Mercy. Please collect one from the church foyer. Also again we recommend that parishioners give some serious thought to purchasing the weekly Catholic Leader. It is an excellent Catholic newspaper and invariably has interesting articles. As we mentioned previously, there is a great dearth of Catholic

literature in our homes and this would certainly help to bridge the gap.

Catechists Meeting

There will be a general meeting of the parish catechists at the Parish Centre on this Thursday May 5th at 11:30

am. All catechists and those who may be interested in becoming catechists in the parish are most welcome.

The Charitable Works Fund Appeal (CWF)

As your math know the CWF is the Sydney Archdiocesan Appeal which is held in every parish of the Archdiocese three times year. Each parish is given a definite target it is expected to raise over the three appeals. If the collection falls short of that then the general funds of the parish are used to meet the shortfall. As I have so often said the people of IHM Sefton are outstandingly generous in their response to all of our appeals throughout the year and I thank you for that. The money raised in the CWF appeals are used by the Archdiocese for the running and maintenance of many of its social and charitable programmes. By setting a definite target for each of the parishes the Archdiocese endeavours to spread the cost of its various undertakings equitably across the

Archdiocesan spectrum. Once again, thank you for your support.

Mass Attendance Count

Each year we are requested to take a head count of all those who attend our weekend Masses. This is done for four successive Sundays all across the Catholic parishes in Australia. For this year it will take place in Sydney

beginning next Sunday. The count is undertaken at each Mass very unobtrusively by the parish collectors.
