After a long and fruitful life, Glenn Draper passed away on June 15, 2019. Draper touched countless lives and impacted many members of the Lake Junaluska community.

Draper was born in Roanoke, Virginia on July 18, 1928. His love for choral music led him to Lake Junaluska, after his group, the Keesler Air Force Base Male Chorus was invited to perform at Memorial Chapel’s dedication service.

A year later, the group returned to perform for a July 4th celebration. It was here that Draper was extended an invitation to work as the director of music at Lake Junaluska.

After accepting the position, Draper established and served as the director of the Lake Junaluska Singers from 1956 to 2009. In its infancy, the chorus group was compiled of volunteers. But under his direction, the group grew from a quartet to a 16-voice ensemble. The choir group has traveled extensively across the Southeast and beyond.

Music can have a powerful role in the spiritual renewal and transformation of a person, something Draper understood well and encouraged in the singers he met.

Glenn Draper made a difference in the lives of many at Lake Junaluska and he will be deeply missed.

This summer, Lake Junaluska is the home and workplace for 24 international students from a total of 10 countries.

These individuals supplement the local staff during Lake Junaluska’s busiest summer months.

International staff members say they have enjoyed getting to know their fellow co-workers. They all live in Lake Junaluska’s Colonial Inn, and with such a diverse group of people, language and cultural exchange is a daily occurrence.

“I like to sit on the porch of Colonial and look at the lake, especially at night,” said Anthony “Dom” Guane, a student from Ghana. “It is very peaceful.”

Guane believes that his job in food services has provided him with lasting skills and lifelong friends.

“Working with a diverse group of people is a lot of fun,” said Guane. “We get to learn about the different cultures and languages represented.”

BELOVED MUSIC AND WORSHIP ARTS WEEK BEGINS Starting June 23, Lake Junaluska will come alive with artistic expression as Music and Worship Arts Week brings worship leaders and community members together for renewal and education around various worship arts. The Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts organizes the event, and programming will last from June 23 to 28. Many of the concerts and worship services are open and free for the community to attend.

This summer, around 800 people will attend the program from a total of 29 different states. Worship leaders as well as those who want to develop their skills for use in worship services will attend classes, ensembles and seminars. Participants have a variety of performance options to choose from, including dance, choral and handbell options.

Children and youth also have their own performance tracks.

Most of the week’s final performances are on Thursday, June 27, and the community is encouraged to attend.

The theme for this year is “Spirit of Wonder,” centered around the idea a spirit of wonder fuels imaginations and strengthens connections to God. For a complete schedule of the events open to the public, check the sidebars in this issue of the Junaluska Weekly.
