Father’s Day 2020 Since 1972 when the official proclamation of an annual Father’s Day celebra-tion was given, and the third Sunday of June was designated as the day to honor our Fathers, families have gathered together in prayer and celebration to thank God for the specific man He has chosen to be our earthly father. We do so again this year, asking the Lord to bless those men.
Here is the blessing over the Father at the time of a child’s baptism:
“God is the giver of all life, human and divine. May he bless the father of this child.
He and his wife will be the first teachers of their child in the ways of faith. May they also be the best of teachers,
bearing witness to the faith by what they say and do, In Christ our Lord. Amen”
As we pray for all Fathers this weekend, we will use this blessing over them at Sunday Mass:
God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things.
Bless these fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.
Grant that we, their families, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen. May our Fathers who have died, rest in peace. Amen.

A R e f l e c t i o n o n F i s h i n g God lies in wait for us with nothing so much as love. Now love is like a fishhook. A fisher cannot catch a fish unless the fish first picks up the hook. If the fish swallows the hook, no matter how it may squirm and turn the fisher is certain of the fish. Love is the same way. Whoever is captured by love takes up this hook in such a fashion that foot and hand, mouth and eyes, heart and all that is in that person must always belong to God. Therefore, look only for this fishhook, and you will happily be caught. The more you are caught, the more you will be liberated. Meister Eckhart Fish, fishing, fishermen. These appear often in the Gospels. There is the call to be “fishers of men” (Mk 1: 17), the coin for the temple tax found in a fish’s mouth (Mt 17: 27), two miraculous catches (Lk 5: 5-10 and Jn 21:1-14) and the miracle of the loaves and fishes (Mk 6: 34-44). The early Chris-tians adopt the symbol of the fish as a way of pro-fessing their faith (Ichthys, the Greek word for fish, becomes an acronym for Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior). But look at how the great Christian mystic, Meister Eckhart, turns the metaphor around. He puts the rod and reel in the hands of God, who baits the hook with the promise of his everlasting love and casts it into the sea of humanity, so often preoccu-pied with worldly ambition and selfish pursuits and enslaved by fear. To pick up God’s hook and swal-low it is to be captured by his endless love. Happily, says the Meister, because only God’s love can truly set us free.
