Come Before Winter I am writing this article on Monday amid growing reports that our area may have ice and snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. In anticipation of this weather schools are closing and grocery stores are packed as area residents shop for the supplies they might need. We are doing our best to get ready for whatever comes. This winter weather may help us connect more personally with a plea that the Apostle Paul made to his young apprentice, Timothy, in II Timothy 4:21. Paul is in prison in Rome, and Timothy is in Ephesus. Many have deserted Paul, but he knows he can count on Timothy to come see him. He asks Timothy to bring him a coat and some books. Then Paul adds, “Do your best to come before winter.” What a statement... “Do your best to come before winter.” Paul is reminding Timothy that his visit has to be made right away. Once winter arrives the icy weather will cause shipping lanes to be closed so that Timothy cannot sail to Rome until the spring. In other words, months will go by, and Paul knows he may not be alive at that point. So he urges Timothy to come before winter. It really is that important. This reminds us that there are seasons in our own lives as well. We often put off decisions and actions that we know we need to make. Among those important matters are our own involvement in worship, study, and service through the Church of Jesus Christ. The longer we delay the more likely other things will interfere. Come before winter. What does that phrase mean for each of us? What decisions need to be made now and what actions need to be taken now so that the opportunity will not be lost forever. Come before winter. Let me remind us of the schedule of events for our Religious Arts Festival, February 6-9. What a statement... “Do your best to come before winter.” Paul is reminding Timothy that his visit has to be made right away.

Music for a Cathedral, February 9Our closing concert for the Religious Arts Festival will feature music written specifically for cathedrals. We will begin the concert with a movement from Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil. The men of the chorus will set the stage with a prayerful chant and then the entire choir will join their voices as we sing O Come, Let Us Worship. At the conclusion of the work an introduction will be given for the concert.

Gregorian ChantChant has been a part of worship in the earliest cathedrals. We will sing a portion of one of the most famous chants, Veni creator spiritus. This chant is used for church dedications, installations of popes, etc.

RenaissanceOur Adult Ensemble will present two selections from the Renaissance period, 1400-1600. They will perform Palestrina’s Sicut Cervus (Like as the hart) and Cantate Domino by Monteverdi.

BaroqueWe will next move forward to the Baroque period (1600-1750) and the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Linda Gill will perform Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in e minor BWV 533. The choir will perform the last movement of Bach’s B Minor Mass, Dona nobis pacem. We will be joined on this performance by trumpets and tympani. Next week we will include notes on the second half of the concert. This is a unique opportunity to hear some of the greatest music ever written for the church. We hope you will invite your friends to this free concert on Sunday, February 9, at 4:00 p.m.

New MembersJack, Amy, and John Dalton Cooper, 1815 Pineneedle Road, Montgomery, AL 36106. New for 2013 Lenten Unity Groups

New this year, the Work Area on Church & Society will sponsor a Lenten Covenant Group with a twist. Participants will include not only FUMC members but also members from other local Methodist congregations such as AME, AME Zion, and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. This group will build on the spirit of last year’s Pan Methodist Pentecost Service and will serve as a prelude to this year’s second Pan Methodist Pentecost Service, which will again be hosted at FUMC in May. The group will meet weekly during Lent and will seek to foster unity and fellowship among local Methodists. Please contact Archie Grubb for further information at [email protected].
