REFLECTION
John the Baptist was introduced in the gospels as the second cousin of our Lord, as a great figure, a messen-ger, the forerunner of our Lord Jesus Christ. His life also spoke a much greater message. His simplicity in life-style and fearlessness in preparing the path for the coming of God's kingdom. John was part of the good news through faithfulness to his mission.
Every Christian is a messenger, a preparer of the way for others. Each of us either hinders or helps people in going to Jesus and entering his kingdom. Married couples are messengers to each other everyday. There are messages which contain affirmation, appreciation, happi-ness and loyalty. Others contain deprecation or discontentment. Through these messages they become good or bad news to each oth-er. To hear regular messages expressing joy over them keeps these alive and strengthens the marital bond. Messages on the other hand sometimes express complaints and are indications that the good rela-tionship is eroding slowly. Love brings a couple together, while good communication keeps them to-gether in love. Praise sends a pow-erful message to one's spouse. It says that one sees the potential rather than the limitations. It makes the couple feel comfortable with themselves and desire to go on with the practice of the good qualities.

Advent comes from the Latin word meaning "coming." Jesus is coming, and
Advent is intended to be a season of prep-
aration for His arrival. While we typical-
ly regard Advent as a joyous season, it is
also intended to be a period of prepara-
tion, much like Lent. Prayer, penance and
fasting are appropriate during this season. Advent is not as strict as Lent, and there are no rules for
fasting, but it is meant to be a period of self-preparation. The purple color associated with Advent is
also the color of penance. The faithful should fast during the first two weeks in particular and re-
ceive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
The color of the Third Sunday of Advent is rose. This color symbolizes joy and represents the happi-
ness we will experience when Jesus comes again. The Third Sunday is a day of anticipatory cele-
bration. It is formerly called "Gaudete" Sunday; gaudete means "rejoice" in Latin.
Blessing of a
Christmas Tree
The use of the Christmas tree is relatively modern. Its ori-gins are found in the medie-val mystery plays that depict-ed the tree of paradise and the Christmas light or candle that symbolized Christ, the Light of the world. According to custom, the Christmas tree is set up just before Christmas and may remain in place until the Solemnity of Epiphany. The lights of the tree are illuminated after the prayer of blessing. In the home the Christmas tree may be blessed by a parent or another family member, in connection with the evening meal on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time on Christmas Day.
