It will take us again through the great events of our salvaon history which ar33-37e full of hope because God keeps his promises. He is faithful as experienced by Adam, the patriarchs, Moses, David, Mary and the apostles. We believe that we will have the same encounters with the Lord if our hearts are recepve to him. We prepare for Christmas during Advent. We are actu- ally much beer prepared for Jesus’ birth than the people in Bethlehem. He was a total stranger to them, even to the shepherds. For us, he is well-known through the gospels. We can cele- brate Christmas more meaningfully than his first visitors. Advent helps us to know him sll beer. It is not a me meant to prepare ourselves for a shopping spree. The season of Advent draws us to intensify our hope that the promises of the Lord will be fulfilled. No maer how sim- ple our Christmas decoraon may be, even a picture only or an old Christmas card, hopefully it will point to Jesus as the cause of our joy on Christmas. The first candle of Advent wreath is lighted today as a sign of that great hope. The season of Ad- vent is given to us as a means of preparing our hearts for the great celebraon of the Navity of the Lord.

REFLECTION We start a new liturgical year. It will take us again through the great

events of our salvation history which ar33-37e full of hope because God keeps his promises. He is faithful as experienced by Adam, the patriarchs, Moses, David, Mary and the apostles. We believe that we will have the same encounters with the Lord if our hearts are receptive to him.

We prepare for Christmas during Advent. We are actu-ally much better prepared for Jesus’ birth than the

people in Bethlehem. He was a total stranger to them, even to the shepherds. For us, he is well-known through the gospels. We can cele-brate Christmas more meaningfully than his first visitors. Advent helps us to know him still better. It is not a time meant to prepare ourselves for a shopping spree. The season of Advent draws us to intensify our hope that the promises of the Lord will be fulfilled. The Advent wreath is round, like a wedding ring, symbolizing God’s endless faithfulness. It is made of evergreen branches for God’s care for his people does not die even after people’s sinfulness and disloyalty. No matter how sim-ple our Christmas decoration may be, even a picture only or an old Christmas card, hopefully it will point to Jesus as the cause of our joy on Christmas. The first candle of Advent wreath is lighted today as a sign of that great hope. The season of Ad-vent is given to us as a means of preparing our hearts for the great celebration of the Nativity of the Lord.

About Advent

Wreaths

Traditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a circle of evergreen branches into which four candles are inserted, representing the four weeks of Advent. Ideally, three candles are purple and one is rose, but white candles can also be used.

The purple candles in particu-lar symbolize the prayer, pen-ance, and preparatory sacrific-es and goods works undertak-en at this time. The rose can-dle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vest-ments at Mass; Gaudete Sun-day is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have ar-rived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas.

The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expec-tation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead.
