SUCH A NICE MESSAGE TO OUR CONGREGATION!
The letter below was sent to AJ from Dr. Ted Shlechter, following AJ’s 2018 High Holy Day Services:
Beloved Leaders of Adath Jeshurun:
I believe that I am a keen observer of people and situations. What I have observed about the recent High Holy Day services at AJ is LOVE. I have never seen
so many congregants at any synagogue or temple being so happy to see each other. I have never seen so many kiss, shake hands, and/or bump fists/elbows with each other. I believe that any organization’s or group’s attitudes are a function of its leadership. You, then are people with much love in your heart for God, your congregants and your community. You, then represent God, AJ, and this great community so well. Isn’t the rekindling of love one of the most important messages of these Holy Days? Such love fortifies us against the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Such love makes life worth living. Such love also affords a life without regrets and grievances. L'shana tova, Ted Shlechter
IN MEMORIAM
The Congregation extends our condolences to the family and friends of Ruth Davis, Pearl Galatz, and Naomi Pressma.

Currently reading…. “The Patriots” by Sana Krasikov “The Patriots” is a historical romance in the old style: multigenerational, multinarrative, intercontinental, laden with back stories and historical research… melodrama and satire, Cleveland in 1933 and Moscow in 2008. CHARITABLE ROLLOVER……………. A Gold Mine With A Trap!
AJ’s tax advisors have asked that we make the following information available to you. Tax law permits an owner of a traditional IRA who has reached age 70 ½ to make an
annual contribution of up to $100,000 directly from their IRA to qualified charities, and Adath Jeshurun is a qualified charity. There can be favorable tax results if a portion of your IRA, and this includes your RMD (required minimum distribution) is paid directly to AJ. This is called a “charitable rollover contribution.” We encourage those of you, who are 70½ or older, to take advantage of this tax savings opportunity to pay your membership support, high holy day seat reservations, and your contributions to AJ’s many funds. For those who elect to have a portion of their IRA paid directly to AJ, we have been advised that if you receive any amount of personal benefit in connection with a rollover contribution, the entire amount of the charitable rollover contribution is disallowed. This means that money from your IRA may NOT be used to pay for any portion of an otherwise non-deductible activity, such as the Music Festival, the meal cost of the Minyanaire Dinner, and the like. If any amount of your IRA charitable rollover amount is used to pay for any item for which you receive a personal benefit, then the favorable tax exclusion from your income is not available with respect to any part of the IRA distribution. For example, if you have $3,000 paid to AJ from your traditional IRA, and $50 is used for an event for you which you receive a benefit, then you must report the entire $3,000 as taxable income – you lose the benefit of the favorable tax treatment. In addition, some tax advisors believe that any amount that is rolled over – paid out of your IRA to all charities for that year is also disqualified for favorable treatment. We have also been advised that the IRS cannot apply an offsetting charitable deduction for your contribution.
In summary, AJ will not be able to accept nor apply any portion of your IRA charitable rollover in payment for any of our programs or services for which you receive a personal benefit. For questions, please discuss these issues with your income tax advisor.
NEWS FROM CANTOR DAVID LIPP
A Pogrom called “Kristallnacht” Thursday, November 8th at 7:00 p.m. at AJ: To their credit, Germany doesn't call it that anymore. Instead, they call it: Reichspogromnacht: The Night of the
Reich's Pogrom. When Mike and Ilse Meyer were alive, they wanted us to do a full-fledged Kristallnacht commemoration each year. I expressed to Mike that if we do, it will not be well-attended either physically or mentally and will compete with Yom HaShoah. But I promised him that I would make sure the community paid attention and respect to this day every five years. Well, 2018 is the 80th anniversary of what we should start calling, even if it is a mouthful, Reichspogromnacht. It was a pogrom, not a beautiful night of crystal. Yes, there was broken glass galore, but deep down this was a pogrom against the Jewish people. This year, our still-living survivors of that night, their children, a grand-nephew, and a student of a survivor will speak and bring the lessons of the day back to us. Dan Streit will relate his father’s escape that night; Ann Dorzback will recount her family’s reaction and travails on their way to this country; Hans Bensinger’s daughter Karin will share her father’s family’s experience in Pforzheim; Carol Klein will speak about her mother Herta Beskin’s childhood trauma and lessons learned and shared as a teacher; Jeremy Frankenthal, Ilse and Mike's grand-nephew, will represent their collective memories; and Fred Whittaker and one of his students who learned from Ernie Marx will share the important educational takeaways that led his students to lobby the Kentucky legislature for mandatory Holocaust education throughout the Commonwealth. Because the actual anniversary falls on Shabbat, we will commemorate the night before the actual anniversary. We won't have live witnesses forever -- we all need to begin to fill that role ourselves.
Festive Chanukah Celebration at AJ on Sunday, December 2nd at 6:15 p.m. As we have for many years, we will begin Chanukah this year with our Bring-Your-Own-Chanukkiah Dinner and Song-fest! We'll light, sing, eat and even dance! Send your favorite YouTubes and we'll play them on the big screen. Send to [email protected] with “Favorite Chanukah Songs” in the subject line.
Chanukah Party at the Glenview on Thursday, December 6th at 7:00 p.m. Bring your friends and your menorah and join me in the Seinfeld Room at The Glenview for an evening of Menorah-lighting, Chanukah-singing, coffee, and dessert. Candles will be provided. This event is free of charge and open to the community!
