Maten, who added four rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots to go with his 17 points. “We needed that momentum to really set the tone for the second half.”
Maten helped by quickly drawing a third personal foul on Tech big man Charles Mitchell, who came into the game with a string of nine straight dou-ble-doubles, and quickly sent the 6-8, 256-pound se-nior to the bench. Mitchell finished the game scoreless and with just four rebounds in only 15 minutes of play.
And Frazier ignited Georgia’s energy by quickly getting the ball up the floor and either dishing off, like he did on Houston Kessler’s layup, or taking his own shot, as in a 3-pointer from the right wing, as the Bulldogs started scored nine straight points over he first 2:26 of the second half to grab a 42-34 lead.
“Houston Kessler was a big spark there to start the second half,” Georgia coach Mark Fox said of
his 6-8, 225-pound junior, who had two points, three rebounds and an assist dur-ing the opening run. “Now that we have a full compli-ment of front-line players, we can keep them fresh, and we can run. So, we got a couple of easy (baskets)
running the floor (in the early minutes of the second half).”
Adam Smith tried to single-handedly shoot Tech back into the game by draining 3-pointers on three consecutive posses-sions, the last with 16:28
remaining that brought the Jackets back to within 46-43.
Tech then got a defen-sive stop and had a chance to cut further into the lead, but Frazier grabbed the rebound of a missed shot from Jacobs and quickly
sprinted up the floor. He then dished off to
Maten for a layup, one of his game-high four assists on the day, that pushed the Georgia lead back to five points at 48-43 with 15:31 left.
That basket also ignited a 10-2 run that ended with yet another Frazier 3-pointer that extended the lead to double digits at 56-45 with 11:50 to play, and Tech never got any closer than seven points the rest of the way.
It was a disappointing outing for the Jackets after a solid win over Virginia Commonwealth earlier this week that had contin-ued the Jackets’ promising start to the season.
“Give them credit,” Tech coach Brian Greg-ory said of Georgia. “We didn’t play very well and they played very well. They were good offensive-ly, kept us out of rhythm on our offense, particu-larly in the second half.
“It’s disappointing to go on the road and not play as well as we’ve been playing, but give them credit. They played well.”
The win also got a bit of a monkey off the back of Fox, whose Bulldogs had not beaten Tech in four straight meetings since Gregory took over as the Jackets coach in 2011.
“It’s not about me and Brian. It’s about Georgia and Georgia Tech,” Fox said. “We’ve got to saddle up whenever we play them. … We hadn’t played well in this game, and that’s taking nothing away from Tech. We needed to play well in this game.
“And we beat a good Tech basketball team. I think Tech’s numbers, they’re probably in the top 50 or 60 teams in the country. So, its a resume’ win in that regard.”
Frazier and Maten were the only Georgia players in double figures, though Kessler had a solid game with six points and eight rebounds, and Kenny Gaines added eight points.
Tadric Jackson scored 14 points to lead Tech, which also got 11 points each from Georges-Hunt and Smith, plus 10 points and six boards from Jacobs.
