Welcome to our Spring 2017 brochure! You will be pleased that we are listing all the concerts from January to June for the first time in one brochure and have further enhanced the design to include more information and more colour,to reflect the vibrancy of our music programme at Conway Hall.
The Autumn 2016 season was particularly successful, with high-quality performances attended by huge audiences, and I have been touched by the number of patrons who have chosen to make donations to help continue our wonderful concerts. From January 2017 there will be donation boxes at the box office every week: your support really does help us to make sure we can go on providing high-quality music making at affordable prices for many years to come!
Spring 2017 features no fewer than 33 events (7 pre-concert talks/recitals, 5 children’s workshops and 21 concerts) with not only our home-grown stars on the stage but also musicians from Sweden, Germany, Italy and more.
We will also present another exciting concert generously supported by The Musicians’ Company, in a programme framed by two of Schoenberg’s great works: his second string quartet and Pierrot Lunaire.
Adding even further to the variety of music on offer at Conway Hall, we welcome Trio Anima: a London-based trio of flute, viola and harp playing a colourful programme of French music, and the Conway Hall début of the Ducasse Trio (recent finalists in the YCAT Competition), whose repertoire will include Stravinsky’s exciting The Soldiers Tale in the arrangement for clarinet, violin and piano.
2017 is the centenary of the Russian Revolution and as such, we are delighted to present two concerts consisting entirely of Russian music and a special composer focus, on French-Russian composer, Georgy Catoire. Led by our patron and leading exponent of Catoire’s music, Hiro Takenouchi and violinist Dunja Lavrova, we will pay homage to this ‘lost’ composer and hopefully leave you wanting to hear more of his music!
I am very excited that the London Mozart Players and pianist, Howard Shelley have agreed to finish our Spring 2017 season with a beautiful classical programme: Mozart’s first and last piano concertos framed by symphonies of Haydn and Mysliveček. Join us for this very special event, with over 20 musicians filling Conway Hall with music!

Georgy Catoire:
An Introduction to the
Man and his Music
Building on the success of his
world premiere recording of
Catoire’s Piano Concerto, patron
Hiro Takenouchi explores the
life of the Russian composer and
performs some of his shorter
works for solo piano.
Tchaikovsky once said of
Georgy Catoire, that ‘it would
be a great sin if he did not devote
himself to composition’. A Russian
composer of French heritage,
Catoire studied composition
with Rimsky-Korsakov and
Lyadov and was also a gifted
pianist. He composed works for
solo piano, voice, a significant
number of chamber works and
a piano concerto. Although
his music previously drew
greatly interest – notably from
Goldenweiser and Oistrakh – it
is rarely performed and only
a small number of recordings
exist.
In the centenary year of the of
the Russian Revolution, Conway
Hall presents this lost composer
in a series of events, including
performances of his solo and
chamber music and an illustrated
talk by our patron, Hiro Takenouchi,
whose world premiere recording
of the Piano Concerto (on Dutton)
received great critical acclaim.

+ POST-EVENT Special Post-concert event:‘Music-in-Motion’ presentation and discussion
In the final part of the concert, the Gildas String Quartet will present Janáček’s Kreutzer Sonata Quartet using a vivid and dramatic new performance concept conceived by John Landor.
Playing from memory, and free from the encumbrance of music stands and chairs, the quartet will become embodied protagonists of the musical drama, performing in the centre of the audience.
Drinks in hand, you can sit, lounge on a cushion (or even lie down!) and immerse yourself in both sound and sight of this haunting work, in an evocatively lit setting.
It will be a social event too, a chance to meet the musicians afterwards and share your experience with the producer and other audience members in an open discussion.

Pre-concert Events
January 8th 5.30pm in the Brockway RoomRobert Hugill

Multum ex parvo. Making a few notes go as far as possible.
February 12th 5.30pm in the Brockway RoomRobert Hugill
‘I feel air from another planet’: Schoenberg’s second quartet includes a setting of the words ‘I feel air from another planet’ and this is very much the theme of the music from the evening’s concert. In the early 20th century composer’s were experimenting, not just with Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique, but looking at music for new combinations of performers. Composers combined voices and chamber ensembles in new ways, and wrote music in new forms.
February 26th 5.30pm in the Brockway RoomJessica Beck
Jessica started working on her collaborative doctoral award with Conway Hall and the Royal Northern College of Music in September 2015. Over the past year, Jessica has been exploring the archive at Conway Hall, as well as archives across the UK, in order to understand more about the role of music in ethical societies in Britain during the Edwardian era with a particular focus on the role of women. During this talk, Jessica will share examples of the archival material and discuss how Conway Hall Ethical Society (then known as South Place Ethical Society) was unique in comparison to other societies and London concert venues at the time.
She will also highlight some of the forgotten women musicians who strongly contributed to the society’s rich musical history.

Affordable classical music for all
Founded in the 1880s, our concert series is the longest-running of its kind in Europe. In 1929, Conway Hall, with its fine acoustic, was purpose-built for the concerts and they have continued there to the present day. The ethos of “affordable classical music for all” still remains. Simon Callaghan is only the sixth Director of Music since their inception.
