Dear 3BC Family,

As we start the new year for LIFEGroups, we also start with me leadingour Education ministry. You may notknow this, but I have been on staff at3BC for 19 years. I came in 1996 tobe the youth pastor. Some of thoseyouth are still at 3BC. I am excitedabout the opportunity to serve in theEducation ministry at 3BC.

Melissa and I have always made LIFEGroup (Sunday School) a priority inour life and ministry in church. We canalways go back to when we were firstmarried and the churches we attendedbefore becoming involved in ministry. Those we attended class with andteachers we had are still people to thisday we have contact with, people weshared life with and people who haveimpacted our life. Our first contact toany church we attended was to find aclass we could join.

Today many people still see theimportance of being involved in asmall group. I think that we ashumans have the need to be involvedwith others. Some get it throughfamily, some with work, and othersthrough our kid’s activities. For me,

my greatest friends and relationshipshave started through those I havemade in church.

Sunday, August 9, is PromotionSunday in our LIFE Groups. Forpreschool, children, youth, andcollege, this means everyone movesup to their next grade. For adults, itmeans we change the age of yourclass by one year. Most look forwardto this Sunday with great anticipation. Some kids are moving from preschoolto children and from children toyouth. They can’t wait to come andsee their new room and meet theirnew teachers.

You may ask why LIFE Groups are soimportant to our church. A LIFE Groupis where you truly get connected in thechurch body. The word LIFE serves asan acronym to help us remember theimportance of LIFE Groups. The L inLIFE stands for Lessons for Life.Studying the Bible is central to ourLIFE Group ministry, but we do notstudy the Word of God just to becomemore knowledgeable about the Bible. Our goal is to teach the Scripture fortransformation. Every time that we areconfronted with God’s Word it shouldchange us and transform us more intothe image of Christ Jesus. Also, it is toapply to our lives on Monday just asmuch as Sunday. The I in LIFEstands for Involvement ofIndividuals. LIFE Groups give everymember an opportunity to serve thechurch body whether in their adultclass or in another age group. Churchmembership is not a spectator sport.

The F in LIFE stands for Fellowshipwith the Family. The word translatedfellowship in the Bible is the wordkoinonia. This involves much morethan being together. It carries ameaning of joining participation orsharing life. That means being therefor each other, whether in times of joyor times of sorrow. Lastly, the E inLIFE stands for Equipping forEvangelism.

That being said, it does not mean wedo not engage people in other placesin life. It will always be my desire toinvite others to be a part of 3BC,because I think these small groups arethe very best. If I love it here, Iwould think and hope others will aswell. Those seven young men andone young lady who were baptizedon one Sunday was a great day. Some of those young men were aresult of one family and their desire tohave those young men and familiesknow Christ as their savior and bringthem to 3BC.

I want to thank those who faithfullyteach their class every week. Theyprepare, pray for those in their class, minister to them, and care for them.We are always looking for newleaders in new classes. If you wouldlike to discuss the idea of teachingand leading a class, please contact me.

THE 3BC COLLEGE AND YOUNGADULT MINISTRY HAD SEVERALSTUDENTS GOING ON MISSIONTRIPS THIS SUMMER, THIS IS A STORYFROM THE BAPTIST & REFLECTORABOUT THREE OF OUR STUDENTS,GABRIELLA BENTANCOURT, ABBITABOR AND DAVID TUCKER ALONGWITH BCM DIRECTOR AND 3BCMEMBER, GLEN WALLACE.

MURFREESBORO - Eight students fromMiddle Tennessee State Universitytraveled to Embera, Panama, to recordChristian songs in order to spread thegospel to different areas around thecountry.

Though the team worked with localpeople in Embera who already hadheard the gospel, the MTSU studentswere there to target surrounding areasof the city that have not heard thegospel, said Glenn Wallace, BaptistCollegiate Ministries director at MTSU.

Because it is hard to reach thosepeople with traditional missionsprojects, the MTSU group came to“record the indigenous tribes singingpraise and worship in their nativelanguage,” Wallace said.

“The idea was that we bring at leasta couple of recording students to comedown to Panama to record thisindigenous tribe’s people singing praiseand worship in their native language.”

Wallace said that they wanted torecord the gospel music in thePanamanians’ native tongue anddistribute in the areas that cannot bereached. “The purpose was to mobilizethe nationals and to go into these partswhere missionaries can’t go,” heobserved. While they were there theywere able to record many songs with

limited time and resources. “We were inthe village for five days total. What wedid was we took all of our gear with us.It was a very stripped down recordingstudio that we took. We had fourmicrophones, mic stands, cables, interface, and one computer and thatwas it. Everything was recorded right tothe computer and put directly intodigital format,” Wallace said.

The people who were beingrecorded were not a professional choiror any type of paid personnel. Rather, they were just various people from thevillage who wanted to share the gospelin a unique way with their localcountrymen. “It was just aconglomeration of whomever couldshow up and sing. It was always abouteight to 10 people. They knew we werecoming,” Wallace said.

“They had a laundry list of songsthat they had prepared prior to usbeing there,” Wallace said.

While there, the MTSU studentsrecorded 34 songs including threechildren’s songs.

Wallace said that the locals werevery musically talented even thoughthey were limited in their options ofinstruments. “The only instrumentsthey had were guitars,” he added. The MTSU team included two videoproduction majors and a photographeralong with the five other students.“Because we knew that we weregoing to do the recording and weknew that this was going to besomething different than had everbeen done before, we wanted todocument everything that happenedduring the week,” Wallace said.

The team is also producing a short documentary of what took place thatweek. Wallace stated that theyinterviewed different people aboutwhat it meant for their team to bethere. The total cost was about $950per person. “The students raised theirown money either through their jobsor churches or individual gifts,”Wallace said. (this article is continued on page 5)

(article continued from page 4) Through this experience, students were

taught, shown, and encouraged to usetheir unique talents for kingdom work. “Itwas incredible to see students using theirvocational calling and applying that tomissions work,” Wallace stated.

While there, the students also wereable to minister to the pastor of the localchurch with which they were working.“We did a bit of construction and workedon the house of the pastor who uses hishouse to host missions groups. We builthim a new tin roof,” Wallace said.
