2 THE NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

HOLY COMMUNION THE NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr (d. 258)

Sunday, August 10, 2014 + 9:30 a.m.

DO NOT BE AFRAID Elijah finds the presence of God not in earthquake, wind, or fire, but in the sound of sheer silence. When the disciples face a great storm on the sea, they cry out with fear. Jesus says: "Take heart, it is I;do not be afraid." Amid the storms of life, we gather to seek the calm presence of Christ that soothesour fears. In comforting words of scripture and in the refreshing bread and cup of the Eucharist, God grants us peace and sends us forth to be a sign of God's presence to others.

Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr   As one of the seven deacons of the church at Rome, Lawrence was responsible for the church's financial matters and for the care of the poor. Asked by the emperor to gather the church's treasure,he presented a collection of orphans, lepers, and the like. The enraged emperor had him put to death.

THE NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST  3

Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination. God our strength,

we confess that we are captive to the power of sin that dwells within us.

We put ourselves first and others last.  What we think will make us happy  leaves us longing for more. Even when we want to do what is good,

we find ourselves doing the opposite. Rescue us from death's grip on our lives,

and raise us up day by day, that we may be alive to God in Christ Jesus.

 Amen.

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God;therefore we are justified by God's grace as a gift.Nothing can separate us

from the love of God in Christ Jesus,in whom we have forgiveness of sin, life, and salvation.

As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christand by his authority, I therefore declare to youthe entire forgiveness of all your sins.

In the Name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

WORD  God’s Word is proclaimed in Scripture reading and preaching

The FIRST READING  1 Kings 19:9-18

On Mount Horeb, where God had appeared to Moses with typical signs of God's presence—earthquake, wind, and fire—Elijah now experienced God in "sheer silence." God assured Elijah that heis not the only faithful believer. Seven thousand Israelites are still loyal. God instructed Elijah toanoint two men as kings and to anoint Elisha as his own successor.

9 At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there.Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "What are you doing here,Elijah?" 10He answered, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts;

for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to takeit away."11He said, "Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD, for the LORD isabout to pass by." Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splittingmountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not

in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in theearthquake; 12and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; andafter the fire a sound of sheer silence. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his facein his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there camea voice to him that said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 14He answered, "I havebeen very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken

your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword.

I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away." 15Then the LORD saidto him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive,

you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. 16 Also you shall anoint Jehu son ofNimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. 17 Whoever escapes from the sword of Hazael,

Jehu shall kill; and whoever escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall kill. 18 Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, andevery mouth that has not kissed him."

The reading concludes:

Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

6 THE NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

The SECOND READING  Romans 10:5-15 A right relationship with God is not something we achieve by heroic efforts. It is a gift received in the proclamation whose content is Jesus Christ. This proclaimed word creates our faith in the Lord JesusChrist. Hence Christian proclamation is an indispensable component of God's saving actions.

5Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that "theperson who does these things will live by them." 6But the righteousness that comesfrom faith says, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is,to bring Christ down) 7or 'Who will descend into the abyss?' (that is, to bringChrist up from the dead). 8But what does it say?"The word is near you,

on your lips and in your heart"(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9because if you confess with your lipsthat Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you

will be saved. 10For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and oneconfesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11The scripture says, "No one whobelieves in him will be put to shame." 12For there is no distinction between Jew andGreek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13For,

"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."14But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how arethey to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear

without someone to proclaim him? 15 And how are they to proclaim him unless theyare sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring goodnews!"

The reading concludes: Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel.

The GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

THE NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST  7

The HOLY GOSPEL  Matthew 14:22-33 Matthew's gospel typically portrays Jesus' disciples as people of "little faith" who fail despite their bestintentions. In this story, Matthew shows how Jesus comes to the disciples when they are in troubleand sustains them in their time of fear and doubt.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy +1 Gospel according to Matthew.Glory to you, O Lord.

22Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the otherside, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he

went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,24but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the

wind was against them. 25 And early in the morning he came walking toward themon the sea. 26But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they wereterrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear. 27But immediately Jesusspoke to them and said, "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid."28Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the

water." 29He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30But when he noticed the strong wind, he becamefrightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31 Jesusimmediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "You of littlefaith, why did you doubt?" 32 When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 Andthose in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

The reading concludes:

The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.

The assembly is seated.

The SERMON

Silence for reflection.

1 Using the thumb, the people may make three small signs of the cross, one on the forehead, one on the lips, and one on the breast whilesilently using the traditional prayer, “May the Good News of Jesus Christ be in my mind, and on my lips, and in my heart. Amen”

The DISTRIBUTION OF THE HOLY SACRAMENT Access to the Lord’s Table is by invitation of the Lord himself. All baptized believers who trust that Christ is presented in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist are invited to come forward and receive Christ in the BlessedSacrament. Communion is distributed by coming up the center aisle at the direction of the usher and returning

along the side aisle. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament may come forward with their arms crossedand receive a blessing. Those who, for any reason, cannot receive the wine may receive the Sacrament under the form of bread alone. In doing so, a communicant still receives the whole Christ.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE W EEK

Monday, August 11Clare, Abbess of San Damiano, died 1253

A contemporary of Francis of Assisi, Clare and a growing number of companionsestablished a women's Franciscan community, called the Order of Poor Ladies, or PoorClares. She inspired other women to pursue spiritual goals.

Wednesday, August 13Florence Nightingale, died 1910; Clara Maass, died 1901; renewers of society

Nightingale was born in England, and horrified her wealthy family by deciding to becomea nurse. She led a group of nurses in ministering in the midst of the Crimean War, and

worked for hospital reform. Maass, a native of New Jersey, was also a war nurse, and volunteered as a subject for research on yellow fever. She died of the disease.

Thursday, August 14

Maximilian Kolbe, died 1941; Kaj Munk, died 1944; martyrs

Father Kolbe was a Franciscan priest arrested by the Nazis and confined in Auschwitz.Kolbe gave generously of his meager resources, and finally volunteered to be starved todeath in place of another man. A Danish Lutheran pastor and playwright, Munk stronglydenounced the Nazis who occupied Denmark in the Second World War. His sermons andarticles helped to show the anti-Christian nature of the movement.

Friday, August 15, 2014Mary, Mother of Our Lord

The feast day of the Virgin Mary has been a standard on Lutherancalendars since the Reformation. Various Lutheran Church Servicesettings (1536 and 1540) retained the festival. Another German

Lutheran calendar designated August 15 as “The Departure ofMary”.

Martin Luther in his writings about the Order of Worship stronglyadvised that as a sign of continuity and order all festivals regarding Mary be observed.Nonetheless, in reaction to what was perceived as the excessive attention of the RomanCatholic Church, the remembrance of Mary disappeared in Lutheran Churches. Other

festivals connected with Mary (Presentation, Annunciation, and the Visitation) wereretained on Lutheran calendars because they are events in the life of Christ.

THE NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST  19

The commemoration of Mary was added to the calendar of the “green hymnal” LutheranBook of Worship in in 1978. The committee which formed the hymnal, fearing lingeringanti-Roman sentiment, didn’t give Mary the title “saint” even though the title was appliedto all the apostles and Evangelists and St. Paul and simply identified her as the “mother of

our Lord.” The service book published by the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod in 1982refers to the mother of Jesus as “St. Mary.”
