As I write this column for this week’s bulletin on Monday evening, a group of parishioners and friends are leaving for Lancaster, PA in the morning to see the play “Esther” at the famous Sight and Sound Theater. We also are sched-uled to tour some of the area’s Amish country and visit an historic church. As more and more folks receive COVID-19 vaccines, we know it will be possible for more people to travel with us in the future, maybe as soon as this Fall.
A goal of mine is to organize a trip to Rome for all members of Our Lady of Hope Parish. While some of you may have been to the Eternal City, many people have not and would not otherwise have an opportunity to experience such a beautiful and cultural expedition unless they were going on a parish trip. Planning such an exciting trip will happen when the COVID-19 pandemic is adequately contained in Europe. Hopefully, a once in a lifetime dream trip like this can happen in a year or a year and a half from now. Stay tuned!
Many First Holy Communions will be happening within parish Masses throughout this special season of Easter joy. Second grade students from all four legacy parishes are signed up for various days and Masses to make their First Holy Communion. Schedul-ing First Holy Communions this way, allows more parishioners to witness, experience and celebrate with our young people as they receive Jesus in the Eucharist the very first time. It is a beautiful sacramental celebration to be enjoyed by everyone attending Mass.
Another important step in the faith journey of our young people will take place during May, as our 8th grade students will receive the sacrament of Confirmation. Again, there will be three differ-ent Confirmation ceremonies during which, and with permission delegated by Bishop David Zubik, local pastors may confer the sacrament of Confirmation. As it was last year, it will again be my honor to confirm our young people in our Roman Catholic faith.
Gratefully in Christ,
FROM THE DESK OF FR. JOHN SKIRTICH

Inspiration for the week When the greeting “Peace be with you” is sincerely offered to a person, it can resonate deep within, bringing comfort and reassurance. When someone possesses the power to bring peace, it brings us to a place of safety and fills us with joy. The resurrected Christ has this power.
God can open our minds so we can more fully understand the meaning of Sacred Scripture and God’s compassionate, loving, tender and untiring embrace constantly present and offered to people throughout history. Without the anchor of truth that only God can provide, we can easily become startled and terrified at the sight of what life brings us.
Being open to God’s offer of peace, we can turn away from old habits and short-sighted vision and experience the gladness and joy of God’s gift. Only then can what is wounded and broken be mended, and reconciliation be achieved. We are the resurrection witnesses called to proclaim the Good News.

The 15 promises of the Virgin Mary to those who pray the Rosary
The Blessed Virgin Mary made these promises to Saint Dominic and to all who follow that “Whatever you ask in the Rosary will be granted.”
1) Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive signal graces. 2) I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary. 3) The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies. 4) The Rosary will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of
God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire for eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
5) The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish. 6) Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries shall never
be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.
8) Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and
9) I shall deliver from Purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary. 10) The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven. 11) You shall obtain all you ask of me by recitation of the Rosary. 12) All those who propagate the Holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities. 13) I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire
celestial court during their life and at the hour of death. 14) All who recite the Rosary are my sons and daughters, and brothers and sisters of my only Son Jesus Christ. 15) Devotion of my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.
Rosaries said in a group receive the merits of the total number of participants.
The Rosary, before Mass, is generally led by members of the Legion of Mary; all are welcome to join us.
Please join a group or start one.

Great News! Our St. Vincent de Paul Society is planning an Our Lady of Hope Spring Food Drive, next Saturday, April 24th between 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM.
If you are able, pack a bag or two with non- care
products. There will be a caravan of vehicles at each church parking lot (Nativity, St. Gabriel, St. Germaine and St. Valentine/side parking lot). Bring your donations to the parking lot of your choice and place them in the trunk of one of the transports. As the vehicles are filled, items will be delivered to St. Winifred’s Food Bank, located on Sleepy Hollow Road.
How else can you help? We welcome any parishioner with a vehicle and a few hours to spare to join our caravan of cars. Additionally, when the cars arrive at the Food Bank, volunteers will be needed to help unload and take the bags inside.
If you can help with either of these tasks, please call Mary Kay at 412-720-4417 or Pam at 412-508-5626 for more information.

Mass Attendance Growing Over the past few weeks we have happily noted an increase
means we need to be more observant with where we sit. The increasing numbers of people attending Mass indicates a need to be more aware of where you place yourselves in a pew.
We want to accommodate as many people as possible while maintain-ing social distance. If you are sitting at the end of a pew and cannot move into the center, please step into the aisle for a moment allowing others to enter the pew to occupy available socially distant spaces. As we continue our celebration of the Easter Season, we thank you for being charitable to your fellow parishioners.
We certainly appreciate everyone is being very mindful of the masking requirements and keeping socially distant. May all the sacrifices we make this Lent help us to be more united to Our Lord Jesus in the celebration of His greatest sacrifice on the cross for our sins.
Live music? Renowned performers? Proceeds for a great cause? Check, check and check! Our annual Bluegrass Festival in support of St. Joseph House of Hospitality is back!
This year’s concert will be streamed live Friday, April 30, beginning at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased at www.ccpgh.org/bluegrass . Follow-ing your purchase, you’ll receive instructions to access performances by fan favorites and new-to-the-festival bands:
• The Casual Hobos • Hickory Bottom Band • Lonesome Lost and Foggy • Sweaty Already String Band
Bruce Mountjoy of 91.3 WYEP will serve as emcee for the evening.
The Bluegrass Festival is the flagship event for St. Joe’s, raising much-needed funds to provide rooms, meals and supportive services to the residents. Over the past 12 months, St. Joe’s has incurred unexpected costs due to the pandemic. Please help off-set these expenses, so they can continue to provide physical and emotional support our gentlemen.

Choosing godparents for your Baby/Child From time to time, questions and controversies arise as to who may serve as a godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism. Therefore, this is a review of
Below is the criteria to be considered before the parents of a child ask someone to be a godparent for their son or daughter:
Since Baptism is the initial, foundational Sacrament in the life of a Catholic, great care must be taken in deciding who will serve as a godparent. The guidelines above are meant to assist parents in making a reasonable decision as to who will fulfill this critical role for their child. These guidelines are provided by the universal Church and individual priests are not vested with the authority to dispense from them.
The decision of choosing a godparent should be based upon who would provide the best example of Catholic living for the child and not merely for reasons of maintaining family harmony. A godparent is not chosen to honor the godparent, but for the well-being and faith development of the child.
must be a practicing Catholic, at least 16 years of age and have received the Sacraments of Initiation (i.e. Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation). Furthermore, if this person is married, the marriage must be a valid, sacramental marriage (i.e. one recognized and blessed by the Catholic Church).
The potential godparent must be registered in a Catholic parish and able to obtain a letter of eligibility from his or her parish priest to be a godparent.
Only one godparent is required by Church law. This godparent may be a man or a woman. However, if two godparents are selected (the more common practice), then there must be one man and one woman chosen. In other words, a child cannot have two men or two women as godparents.
In extraordinary situations, when two Catholic godparents cannot be found, a baptized person who belongs to another Christian denomination (i.e. Methodist, Lutheran, or Presbyterian) may serve as a Christian Witness. However, former Catholics who have left the Catholic Church for another Christian denomination are not permitted to serve, either as a Catholic godparent or a Christian Witnesses.
To schedule Baptism Class, contact Mary Beth Green, Pastoral
Associate, at 412-833-0661.

Confession & First Communion
Question:
Answer: For centuries the Catholic Church has taught that a person needs to be in a state of grace (free from mortal sins) in order to worthily receive the Eucharist. To that end, Catholics should make an effort to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation any time they recog-nize the need for the sacrament (and in keeping with the precept of the Church asking we celebrate this sacrament at least once each year).
In the case of children preparing for their First Communion, the Code of Canon Law is very clear that they should also celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation before receiving the Eucharist for the first time: “It is the responsibility, in the first place, of parents and those who take the place of parents as well as of the pastor to see that children who have reached the use of reason are correctly prepared and are nourished by the divine food as early as possible, preceded by sacramental confession” (Canon 914). While some might question the significance of the Sacrament of Reconciliation — especially in the case of chil-dren who might not fully understand the reality of sin or the meaning of the sacrament itself — a child’s “First Confession” can be a wonderful time for families to reflect together on the quality of their relationships, how they put their faith into practice, and, when it is possible, to celebrate the sacrament as a family. In the end, the celebration of these two sacraments marks important moments in the spiritual journeys of children and we hope their “First Confession” and “First Communion” help instill in them a love of the sacraments of the Church.
