OUR MISSION

God’s purpose for St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is: Accepting all people through God’s grace,

sharing our faith in Christ, and making disciples.

Did You Know?

The meaning behind the

‘white-robed apostles of hope’ or Easter Lily

The Easter season is full of joyful

symbols. From the white paraments,

beautiful decorations, to the joyful

hymns, and altars adorned with color-

ful flowers. All of these things remind

us of the great victory our Lord Jesus won for us! But it is

the Easter lily which is a standard flower in churches during

this joyful season. How much do we really know about this

fragrant flower? It is the traditional flower of Easter,

symbolizing elegance, beauty, spirituality, hope, and life -

more specifically, the resurrection of our Lord.

This importance rests even more on a neat legend (a tradi-

tional story that may or may not be true) that the blood of

Jesus, as it fell from the cross, was by a miracle transformed

into these flowers which filled heaven and earth.

Whether this legend is true or not, the lily helps retell the

resurrection story with its life cycle. The bulb of these

flowers buried in the ground represents the tomb of Jesus

and the glorious white trumpet-like fragrant flowers which

grow from the bulbs symbolize His life after death. The

snowy white color stands for the purity of our Divine

Saviour and joy of the resurrection while the trumpet shape

signifies Gabriel’s trumpet call to rebirth and new life.

And now you know!

HOLY BAPTISM

us new birth, adopts us as children, and makes us members of the body of Christ, the church.

28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. 30When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 32They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scrip-tures to us?’ 33That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their compan-ions gathered together. 34They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ 35Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. 36 While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ 37They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 38He said to them, ‘Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.’ 40And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’ 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43and he took it and ate in their presence. 44 Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ 45Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46and he said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47and that repentance and forgive-ness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things.’

Canticle of Praise - p. 204

PRAYER OF THE DAY: L. Let us pray together: All. Father of all, your Son made himself known to his

disciples in the breaking of the bread. Open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in his redeeming work, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

GOD’S WORD: Reader Jenni-Michelle Funk

↓ FIRST READING: Acts 3:12-19

12 When Peter saw it, he addressed the people, ‘You Israelites, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? 13The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he had decided to release him. 14But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you, 15and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16And by faith in his name, his name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this per-fect health in the presence of all of you. 17 ‘And now, friends, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Mes-siah would suffer. 19Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out.’

L. The Word of the Lord. C. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSIVE READING: Psalm 4 (Congregation reads bold parts)

L. 1 Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

C. 2 How long will you people turn

my glory into shame? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods? L. 3 Know that the LORD has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him. C.

4 Tremble and do not sin;

when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. L. 5 Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the LORD. C.

6 Many, LORD, are asking,

“Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of your face shine on us. L. 7 Fill my heart with joy when their grain and new wine abound. C.

8 In peace I will lie down and sleep,

for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.

↑ Gospel Acclamation: “Alleluia” (sung) - p. 205 Alleluia! Lord and Savior, open now your saving word. Let it burn like fire within us; speak until our hearts are stirred. Alleluia! Lord, we sing, for the good news that you bring.

HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 24:13-48

Congregational response after the announcement: Glory to you, O Lord.

13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusa-lem, 14and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15While they were talking and dis-cussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still, looking sad. 18Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?’ 19He asked them, ‘What things?’ They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the peo-ple, 20and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. 21But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morn-ing, 23and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. 24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.’ 25Then he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’ 27Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.
