FROM THE PASTOR Jesus tells us that we are to love our neighbors as our-selves. Of course we wonder who our neighbors are, exactly. Are they the people who live near us? Are they people like us? Are they people who like us? Are they just the people we know or should we also love strangers? In his familiar parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus challenges his hearers to wonder not, “Who is my neighbor?” but “How can I be a loving neighbor?” If I am acting as a neighbor, it really doesn’t matter who my neighbor is. Still, we’ve got to start somewhere. Perhaps the best place to start is with our nearest neighbor. We cannot possibly love everyone in the world because we don’t know all the peo-ple in this world. But we do know some people very well, and we can start to follow Jesus’ instruction by loving those whom we know the best. But, as we know too well, even loving our nearest neighbor is not always easy. Sometimes familiarity breeds contempt or apathy or disgust. Sometimes the people we know the best are starving for our love while we are busy doing “good” things for other people. Trevor Hudson, a pastor in South Africa, tells of a man named Bill who was in his church. Bill was passionate about God. He worshiped faithfully, praised God loudly, and prayed in public beautifully. He yearned for miracles and revival every Sunday. He was “on fire” for God. One day Trevor went to visit Bill at his home. Bill wasn’t there, but his wife was and Trevor commented to her, “You know, Bill is really passionate about God.” She looked at Trevor with fire in her eyes, a look that Trevor says he will never forget. She said, “You can say that. You don’t have to live with the man.” Somehow Bill did not make the connection that loving God with all that we are goes hand-in-hand with loving our neighbors who are nearest to us. Who is your nearest neighbor? Are you showing your love and care for her? Does he know that you are willing to forgive him and extend him your grace? Sometimes the people who need our love the most are the people we know the best. Reach out to them today. Be intentional to tell them and show them that they mean the world to you. Love them like God loves you. Grace and peace, David ______________________ Trevor Hudson, Invitations of Jesus (Nashville:Upper Room Books, 2014), 26.
