COUNTDOWN & PRELUDE “Let Your Light Shine”
WELCOME & GREETING Rev. Fred Baum
*OPENING HYMN “O Worship the King” (1,2,4,5) No. 73
*CALL TO WORSHIP Isaiah 60:1-6
Leader: “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises
upon you.
People: See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the
peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over
you.
Leader: Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your
dawn.
People: “Lift up your eyes and look about you: All assemble and come to
you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on
the hip.
Leader: Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with
joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of
the nations will come.
People: Herds of camels will cover your land, young camels of Midian and
Ephah. And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense
and proclaiming the praise of the Lord.
*CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostle’s Creed, Ecumenical Version
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the
Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day
he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God
the Father, and will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life
everlasting. Amen.
NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Ephesians 5:8-16
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of
light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and
find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of
darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient
do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything
that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said:
“Wake up, sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise,16 making the most of
every opportunity, because the days are evil.

SHARING OF CONCERNS AND CELEBRATIONS Rev. Fred Baum
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass
against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For
thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBER

OFFERING Mary Bellah
“Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart” (arr. Tornquist/Smith) “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way,
let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your
Father in heaven.” ~ Matthew 5:14,16
*DOXOLOGY “Christ Is the World’s Light” (4) No. 188
*PRAYER OF DEDICATION Rev. Fred Baum
NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Matthew 2:1-12 1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King
Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2
and asked, “Where is the one who has
been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship
him.”
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 When he
had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them
where the Messiah was to be born.5
“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is
what the prophet has written:
6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
7
Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star
had appeared. 8
He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the
child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen
when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child
was. 10
When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11
On coming to the house, they
saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then
they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and
myrrh.12
And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to
their country by another route.
Leader: This is the word of God for the people of God.
People: Thanks be to God!

“Why? Making Sense of God’s Will”, A Study by Adam Hamilton
Have you ever wondered:
Where is God when the innocent suffer?
Where is God when my prayers go unanswered?
Why is God’s will so hard to understand?
Join us for a 4-week study of the Adam Hamilton book “Why? Making Sense of God’s Will”.
Hamilton is senior pastor of The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas.
A master at explaining difficult questions of faith in a down-to-earth fashion, he is the author of
numerous books.
Class will begin Wednesday, Jan 23 and run through Feb 13. We will meet in the Eds
Building at 10 a.m. for about 90 minutes. A typical class session will begin and end with
prayer, and will include Biblical Foundation, group discussion and activity, and a short DVD
presentation. Each participant will be asked to purchase the book at a cost of $10.
Please sign up for the class as soon as possible but no later than Jan 14 so we can order
books and get them to you prior to our first session. Call Gail Parson or the church office to sign up
for the class.
Further class options for the Spring. More information to follow Starting February 27 to March 20 Wednesday morning 10:00 AM in Ed’s Building The Life and Teachings of Jesus – Comparing the Gospels
An exploration of the Books of Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John. These four books have
long served as the foundation of the Christian religion. While much is known about their origins,
much is still a mystery. In four sessions, and with the help of our favorite Bibles, we will discuss
some of the following questions:
a) when were they written,
b) why were they written,
c) who wrote them,
d) how are the similar, and
e) how are they different?
Lenten Study. Max Lucado. Study begins March 27-April 17
