We are pleased to provide the newsletter for the 6th International Woodfibre Resources & Trade Conference. Five months out, we now have more than 100 registered delegates from more than 24 countries. Those who organise conferences will know that this many “ c onfirms ” , at this stage, bodes very well for another very successful and well attended meeting. Field trip numbers are filling up, so if you plan to attend we would recommend registering before the end of this year. Since our last newsletter, we have confirmed an excellent speaker on the “ O utlook for international wood panel markets ” and its trends. We welcome Laszlo Döry, President, European Panel Federation and Vice- President CEI-Bois in Austria. Mr Döry has had both CEO experience in the wood panels sector ( Homogen Holz ) and for the last decade has been President of the European Panel Federation, with offices both in Vienna and Brussels. We have also decided to hold one ( the last ) speaking slot unfilled for a month or so, as we have a number of people suggesting titles and speakers, and we want to be sure we fill that slot with the most attractive topic and speaker for our delegate mix. Meanwhile, seaborne woodchip imports into the Turkish wood panel sector continue to increase dramatically, as continual wood panel manufacturing expansions fuel the demand for ever more imported volumes. With imports starting less than a decade ago, we expect the 2012 volume will be around 1.85 million GMT, and the 2013 volume may approach 2.0 million GMT ( see chart below) . This is more than the imports into either Korea or Taiwan, long seen as important Asian woodchip importers. Turkey is also, by far, the largest woodchip importing nation in the Atlantic region. We expect imports will have increased by a massive 75% from just 2010 to 2013. Even as this newsletter goes out, there are reports of a major new long term contact being negotiated/signed between a Turkish wood panel manufacturer and a new supplier, and from a new export port in the Americas. Where will it end?

The history of the venue is supplied by the owners—The Marmara. Esma Sultan, was born in 1873 at Dolmabahçe Palace, iand s the daughter of the 32nd Ottoman Sultan, Abdulaziz I. At the age of three, Esma Sultan was admitted in the harem of Sultan Abdulhamid I, and was brought up in the harem until 1876 when at 16 she married Mehmed Pasha, the Circassian who was one of the leading statesmen of his time. The 19th century Ottoman mansion located next to Ortaköy Mosque was presented to Esma Sultan as a wedding gift. The mansion was named after Esma Sultan who lived at the palace and the Esma Sultan Mansion was passed down through the generations. Esma Sultan Mansion became a Greek school in 1918, was used as a tobacco warehouse in 1922 then as a carpenter house, furniture warehouse and coal warehouse respectively in 1950s. The building was subsequently burnt down in a large fire in 1975. Esma Sultan Mansion was provided with a new cultural identity when it was bought by The Marmara in early 1990s, remaining true to the original plan of the mansion. The interior of the building was reconstructed in 2001 using glass and steel within the direction of the avant project by Philip Robert and was opened to service during 12 months of the year. The garden still contains the remains of the cistern, the Turkish bath and the stable.
