Birla Public School celebrated Qatar National Day with great warmth and joy in the

presence of parents, staff, students and special guests from the Museum of Islamic Art.

Students took out a serpentine processional parade led by the school band and bearers of ‘One Love’, iconic symbol of Qatari hos-pitality to millions of expatriates living in Qatar.

The parade started with a sol-emn salute which Salem Al Sawad, Deputy Director at Museum of Islamic Art along with Lukose Chacko, chairman, Gope Shahani, Vice-Chairman, Principal A P Sharma and others senior officials. Linda Lukose, head girl, read out

the pledge, ‘Long live Qatar, Long Live the Emir, Long Live Father Emir, we love Qatar” which the whole school repeated resoundingly.

Salem Al Aswad, chief guest, recalled the services rendered by Indians serving Qatar in various service sectors saying, “Service rendered by Indian people in Qatar is remarkable and you contributed greatly in building our nation.”

Abdullah Al Dowsari, head of visitors ‘services, MIA was the guest of honour.

Wishing the gathering and the state of Qatar ‘happy national day’ Lukose Chacko, chairman, board of directors, mentioned in grati-tude to Qatar, ‘We are privileged

to live in this beautiful country and we are grateful to the people, the emir and the country. I do not think that there is any other place in the world where expatriate peo-ple can lead their life in such international standards. We feel very safe and comfortable to live, to work, and to study in this very hospitable country thanks to the benevolent rulers the open heart-edly great people of this country.”

He assured the state that “we reaffirm that we will serve this country with truth and loyalty and express our unconditional solidar-ity with the people of Qatar under all the circumstances whatever they may be.”

Principal A P Sharma

welcoming the guests paid rich tributes to the rulers of Qatar, its people and complimented them for their great hospitality.

He thanked the state and its rulers for giving the expats a most safe place in the world to work and live and paid for the health and happiness of all especially the royal family.

The school also presented a cultural programme in tune with the theme of the Qatar National Day celebrations and feted the audience for an hour.

The take home part of the show was that even the distin-guished guests joined the children on the stage performing a Qatari dance eulogizing the Emir.

As the country makes strides towards self-sufficiency, ‘Embrace Doha’ is celebrating National Day with

focus on inspiring entrepreneurial spirit among young Qatari nation-als to discover opportunities available in the local market.

Aptly titled “Labaih Ya Amir” (Here I am at your service, O Emir),

Embrace Doha’s National Day pavilion at Katara was inspired by Emir H H Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani’s speech which calls for collective participation in building the country’s economy and protect-ing its security. The pavilion showcases a number of Qatari national startup businesses and incubatees at the Qatar Business Incubation Centre (QBIC).

One of the incubatees, whose stall is attracting crowds at the pavilion, is Tean Studio which sells

pottery and provides workshops to individuals and companies. The company founded and run by an all-female group of Qatari national entrepreneurs sprung from their interest and passion for pottery.

“We are three girls who met in one of the workshops. We decided to have our own workshop and start working on pottery by ourselves instead of only joining workshops that are offered in the country,” Shaikha Al Khulaifi, one of the founders of Tean Studio, told The

Peninsula. Tean Studio is showcas-ing some of its unique pottery collections while conducting work-shops for children and adults at the event.

“We started at QBIC. They incu-bated us, and from there we started creating our collection as well as giving workshops to kids and adults. We arrange workshops with enti-ties and started having private classes in our own workshop area which was offered to us six months from incubation,” said Al Khulaifi.

QBIC is one of the leading busi-ness centres for entrepreneurship in Qatar and the Middle East which was founded by Qatar Development Bank (QDB) and Social Develop-ment Center (SDC), said Mohammed Dalloul, Operations Officer at QBIC.

“We support all Qatari entrepre-neurship and try to scale up businesses in Qatar. We support them financially, logistically and through workshops,” said Dalloul, who was at the QBIC stand at the event providing information to vis-itors who consider turning their business ideas to reality.

“Our office is located in the New Industrial Area for a good reason, which is to help the manufacturers develop their products and main-tain them in the same place. We give them an office and a workshop and a seed fund which starts from QR100,000 up to QR300,000

within two years, after which they graduate from the program so oth-ers can join and start the same journey,” he explained.

QBIC has already seen dozens of graduates and more are expected in the future with hundreds of applications it receives revealing the increasing interest in entrepre-neurship in the country, he added.

In addition to Tean Studio star-tups and incubatees engaged in perfume and food business are also among those present at the event

organised by Embrace Doha, a Qatari company which also started as a QBIC incubatee.

“My aim is to inspire people. I hope that this event will inspire more Qataris to start their own businesses. I graduated from QBIC and I recommend it for people who want to start a business or a busi-ness idea,” said Amal Al Shammari, CEO of Embrace Doha.

‘Embrace Doha’ is a first-of-its-kind Qatari company that offers a diverse range of cultural sessions

and events aimed at enriching the experiences of expatriates and vis-itors. Since its establishment in 2014, the company has grown organis-ing more cultural sessions and even bigger events in the country, said Al Shammari.

For the National Day celebra-tions, ‘Embrace Doha’ has gathered events and activities on culture, education and entertainment under one roof in their pavilion in Katara which witnesses hundreds of visi-tors every day since it opened on December 12.

A series of presentations includ-ing poetry, traditional dance and song interpretation by school chil-dren from various educational institutions in the country are staged regularly at the venue.

Two Bedouin tents , one for VIPs and another for the public, provide visitors knowledge and experience on authentic Qatari hos-pitality as they see how Arabic coffee and tea are prepared as well as sample them.

Workshops on pottery, draw-ing and Arabic calligraphy, henna and face painting are available at the pavilion. Qatari craftsmen dem-onstrating how to make native handicrafts such as traditional wooden boxes, miniature dhows, fishing and pearl diving equipment and gypsum decoration are also an attraction at the pavilion which is open from 4pm to 10 pm every day until Tuesday.

Workshops on pottery, drawing & Arabic calligraphy, henna & face painting are available at the pavilion.

Children following a healthy diet consist-ing of fruits and vegetables, while limiting intake of refined sugars and fat, may have

better self-esteem and fewer emotional and strong peer relationships, according to a study.

The findings showed that better well-being was associated with consumption of fruit and vegetables, sugar and fat in accordance with dietary guidelines.

Moreover, fish intake 2-3 times per week was also associated with better self-esteem and no emotional and peer problems. Intake of whole meal products was also associated with no peer problems.

For the study, published in the journal BMC Public Health, the team examined 7,675 chil-dren two to nine years of age from eight European countries—Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain and Sweden.

The children were given a healthy dietary adherence score (HDAS) based on how closely they followed five guidelines: limiting sugar, lim-iting fat, preferring whole meal over refined grains, eating 400-500gm of fruits and vege-tables a day, and fish 2-3 times a week.

A higher Healthy Dietary Adherence Score (HDAS) was associated with better self-esteem and fewer emotional and peer problems such as having fewer friends or being picked on or bullied, in children regardless of body weight, two years later.

I can put together a decent dinner party. But when it comes to the end of the meal, I have never been at ease with making

a cuppa for my coffee-drinking guests, because I only do tea.

My new plan is to serve this whiz-bang-simple dessert, which offers all the coffee flavor with precious little bitterness - and a mild buzz of caffeine, if you don’t opt for decaf. It is an unexpectedly light and cool way to satisfy everyone at the table, from the pour-over faithful to K-Cup fans.

For the coffee gelatins, all you need is a cup of water, a cup of boiling water, three tablespoons powdered gelatin, one table-spoon instant espresso, half a cup of sugar, two cups cold-brew coffee and whipped or chilled heavy cream for serving.

First you will need to pour the one cup of water into a 9 by 5 inch loaf pan and sprinkle the pow-dered gelatin on the water’s surface. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes, until the gelatin firms up. Then you’ll have to combine the 1 cup of boiling water and the instant espresso powder in a large liq-uid measuring cup, stirring until the granules have dissolved, then quickly add the sugar, stirring until it has dissolved.

Pour the sweetened coffee mixture into the pan, then use a fork or flat whisk to thoroughly incorporate it into the gelatin mixture, making sure there are no clumps of gelatin. (You can pinch any stray lumps into submission with your clean fingers.)

Pour in the cold-brew coffee mixture,

stirring gently. Any foam or bubbles on the surface

should subside after a few minutes; if not, stir to make them disappear. Cover with plastic wrap (not touching the surface) and refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or until firm.

Finally, uncover and invert the slab of coffee gelatin onto a cutting board. Cut into 1-inch cubes and divide among dessert cups. Top with whipped cream, or pour a little heavy cream over each portion.

You need to serve it chilled and it makes about six to eight servings.

FOOD SUNDAY 17 DECEMBER 201708

Julia Turshen The Washington Post

This cauliflower offers a similar appeal to Buffalo chicken wings. When it’s crisp and hot, the cauli-flower gets tossed with

butter and hot sauce. You could serve this drizzled with blue cheese dressing.

For a cheesy sauce idea as well as a use for the vegetable’s leaves, see the variations, below.

Cauliflower, with its sturdy flo-rets (and, incidentally, now available in a range of colours), can also stand up to big flavours. I like to roast a whole head broken into pieces until they’re browned and crisp at the edges and toss with but-ter and hot sauce, like chicken wings sans the chicken. Or roast and drizzle with a simple cheddar cheese sauce (like nachos sans the chips). Both of these remind us that vegetables can be just as satisfying as anything else. And don’t forget t h e l e a v e s t h a t

hug your cauliflower. If you buy a cauliflower as fresh as possible (at your local farmers market, for example), chances are the leaves that protect the cauliflower will be bright green and crisp and entirely edible. Do not discard them. Instead, roughly chop them and saute them with olive oil, minced garlic and a pinch of dried red chile flakes like you would any other green. Serve as a side dish, mix with pasta or any cooked grain, or turn them into a frittata.

4 servings

Ingredients1 large head (about 2 1/2

pounds) cauliflower, cut into bite-size florets (about 8 cups)

3 tablespoons olive oilSalt3 tablespoons unsalted butter,

melted1 tablespoon of your favourite

hot sauce, or more as neededLarge handful coarsely

chopped fresh cilantro or chives, for serving (optional)

StepsPreheat the oven to 425 degrees.Spread the cauliflower florets

on a rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle with the oil and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon of the salt. Use your hands to toss them until evenly coated. Roast (middle rack) for about 35 minutes, stirring now and then, until the cauliflower is softened and browned.

Whisk together the butter and hot sauce in a large bowl. Add the hot cauliflower to the bowl and toss to coat. Taste and season with more salt and/or hot sauce.

Transfer to a serving platter, sprinkle with the cilantro or chives, if using, and serve right away.

Variations: To make Roasted Cauliflower With Cheddar Sauce, omit the butter and hot sauce step in the directions above. Combine 1 tablespoon unsalted butter and 1 tablespoon flour in a small sauce-pan over medium heat, whisking until light brown. Slowly whisk in 1/2 cup whole milk; cook for about 1 minute, until thickened. Add 2

large handfuls of coarsely grated mild cheddar cheese (because mild cheese will be creamier than sharp). Taste and season with salt and/or pepper and hot sauce; whisk in more milk, a tablespoon at a time, as needed to create a more pour-able sauce. Drizzle the sauce over the just-roasted florets and serve hot.

To make Sauteed Cauliflower Leaves With Garlic, look for heads of cauliflower at the farmers mar-ket that have bright green, crisp leaves hugging the exterior. Coarsely chop them and add to a large skillet with olive oil, minced garlic and a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes (all to taste). Cook for about 5 minutes over medium heat, until just wilted. Season lightly with salt and sprinkle with fresh lemon juice (to taste).

It is important to understand that political correctness is not always the right route to take for escapist

excursions while courting laughter. “Daddy’s Home 2”, which takes the rather engaging sparring game in the first film between two neighbouring dads to the next generation is a whir-pool of improper guffaws, well-intended potshots at sacred cows of the traditional family get-togethers.

But for crying out loud, and laugh-ing out strong, can’t we just have fun without looking anxiously over our shoulder at life through the prism of isms?

So now here is the thing. Dads Will Farrell and Mark Wahlberg are no longer at loggerheads. Their fathers are. And the fact that actors of Mel Gibson and John Lithgow’s stature

play the warring patriarchs just dads... I mean, adds so much sauce to the tur-key topping. Just the night before I had fun with this Christmassy concoction, I saw Lithgow as a hardboiled tycoon in the ecological drama “Dinner With Beatriz”. He is a complete contrast here as a moony dad who meets his son Will Farrell at the airport much to the disgust of Gibson who can’t get along with son Mark Wahlberg let alone smooch him.

Lithgow and Gibson hold the sprawling narrative together. The plot has some razor sharp humour, and not all of it is decorous.

Give yourself a break from the pressures of looking for relevances in every frame, and “Daddy’s Home 2” will give you that year-end pressure release. The climax is located in the lobby of a multiplex theatre with the entire cast crooning “Do They Know It’s Christmas”.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is the eighth episode of the series and the sec-

ond film in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, following “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” which was released in 2015.

Hardcore devotees of the franchise will definitely go over the moon with this edition. Ele-vating several notches from its previous edition, the film has all the elements that encapsulate the magic of movies. An uniniti-ated person to the series will also find this film fascinating. They will lap it up with a little trepi-dation, simply because of the film’s genesis.

The saga begins with a com-forting sense of deja vu, “In a galaxy long, long time ago”, fol-lowed by an informational scroll which gives an insight into the Galactic War.

Like every edition, this one too is a battle between good and evil. Written and directed with thoughtfulness and visual flair by Rian Johnson, the film picks up right after the events of “The Force Awakens”. Interspersed b e t w e e n s c e n e s o f

an inter-galaxy war led by Resistance leader General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and The First Order, led by General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson), Rey (Daisy Ridle) has found Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on a remote island on an equally remote planet with the intention of bringing him out of retirement to help the Resist-ance, to take down the First Order, which rose from the ashes of the defeated Galactic Empire. Incidentally, the Resistance was earlier called the Rebellion.

The plot swings with dra-matic twists and from the visual point of view, every frame exudes brilliance. True to the for-mula, the director tells the saga by breaking the story into sepa-rate threads, each with its own set of objectives. Every location has its action scenes, mostly exhilarating and none of them unnecessary.

The visuals are bright and colourful, the scenes that lead to the film’s final battle. The com-puter generated images mesh seamlessly into the live action sequences demanding the film to be seen on an IMAX screen.

Bollywood film “Tiger Zinda Hai”, which has been refused the No-objection Certifica-

tion for import into Pakistan, shows the country’s national security and law enforcement institutions and agencies in a demeaning manner, according to the Pakistan censor board chief.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Informa-tion, Broadcasting, National History and Literary Heritage on Thursday refused the grant of the NoC to the local distributor, Geo TV Network, for “Tiger Zinda Hai” on the recom-mendation of the Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC), thereby ban-ning the movie in the country.

“As per synopsis, reviews and trailers of the film available in media, in the said feature film, our national security and law enforcement insti-tutions, agencies, individuals and certain state symbols are being shown in a demeaning manner on which we have a ‘no-compromise

policy’,” CBFC’s chief Mobashir Hasan told IANS via social media from Islamabad. The Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer is a sequel to the thriller “Ek Tha Tiger”, which too was not released in Pakistan.

“(The) first film ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ was also banned in 2012 as it blatantly flouted the Code of Censorship of

Films, 1980 under MPO (Mainte-nance of Public Order), 1979,” Hasan said.

Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF),

“Tiger Zinda Hai” takes forward the story of two spies—one Indian and the other Pakistani—Tiger and Zoya, who join forces to battle terrorism.

It is slated for worldwide release on December 22. Hasan explained: “It’s the legal and administrative deci-sion of the Ministry of Information to issue the NoC or otherwise after closely examining the request of a distributor.”

“Tiger Zinda Hai” has been a much-anticipated Bollywood enter-tainer in a year which has not seen too many blockbusters. Besides the buzz around its one-of-a-kind action sequences and exotic loca-tions, the on-screen reunion of Salman and Katrina after a gap of five years, has piqued the interest of Bollywood buffs.

Owing to Salman’s fan follow-ing in Pakistan, there was a high level of interest in the movie there, Lalani said. “Pakistan loves Salman Khan. ‘Sultan’ was a mega block-buster and minted approximately $3m at the box office in Pakistan. His ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ was also loved by fans here,” Lalani said of the actor, who is amongst Hindi cin-ema’s best known stars.

Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt have bagged the Best Actor awards at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards 2017. “Performing on stage always gives me a huge adrenaline rush but perform-

ing live for kids at the Kid’s Choice Awards was just next level in terms of madness. The kids are so full of love and positivity and energy that I simply had the best time ever on stage,” Ranveer said in a statement.

Alia said that children are a bundle of joy and happiness, and performing on stage with them is always a memorable experience.

The event, held here on Friday, was also graced by celebrities like actor Varun Dhawan, actress Kriti Sanon and rapper Badshah.

“Golmaal Again” won in the Best Film category. “Badri Ki dulha-nia” of the movie “Badrinath Ki Dulhania” was voted as the Best Song by children. Varun received The Dancing Star and the Best Enter-tainer of the Year awards. Cartoon characters Motu Patlu was declared as the Best Show on a Kids Channel in the country at the gala where Alia turned green on being slimed by Ranveer.

The “Green Slime Mania” is a tradition that is followed across the globe for Kid’s Choice Awards as a mark of honour where international celebrities like singers Justin Bieber and Katy Perry have also been slimed. “This edition of the awards has once again created many unique, electrifying and fun moments with the kids, toons and stars, all of which will create a memorable experience for all the Nickelodeon fans,” said Nina Elavia Jaipuria, Business Head - Kids’ Entertainment, Viacom18.

The quintessential heroine—on and off screen—is not for actress Kangana Ranaut

(pictured).“I have myself as the priority

always. I do not subscribe to the theory that good girls don’t think about themselves and they are all

for sacrifice. My life is my life and I want to make the most of it,” Kan-gana told IANS over phone from Mumbai when asked about the learnings that she wants girls to draw from her life.

Coming from a small town in Himachal, Kangana made her debut in Bollywood with “Gang-ster - A Love Story” in 2006. Even though her style and accent were criticised initially, she made a mark with her strong performances in films like “Fashion”, “Queen”,

“Tanu Weds Manu” and “Tanu Weds Manu Returns”. Her next project is

“Manikarnika - The Queen of Jhansi”, a biopic on Rani of Jhansi.

“It was most definitely very challenging for me to come from a small town which anyway is not very tolerant to aspirational women, especially ambitious women. You are seen as a vamp if you are ambitious, if you want to make your own money or if you don’t want to be dependent.”

Rapper Eminem (pictured) will embark on an American tour for the first time in four years.

Eminem will perform in 2018, marking it his first show since 2014, reports aceshowbiz.com. Veteran music agent Cara Lewis broke the news during an interview with Pollstar publication.

When asked about hip-hop musicians who would be going on a tour soon, Lewis answered:

“Eminem will be touring next year on selected dates, his first US performances since 2014,” adding that Travis Scott (II) would be “headlining arenas in 2018.” Further details about the upcoming tour are to be announced, but some fans have already prepared their money to buy the tickets for the shows. A fan took to Twitter and wrote: “Seeing Eminem in concert has been on my bucket list forever. Can’t wait for him to release the tour dates and cities!” adding some heart eyes emoji.

Eminem’s album “Revival” released on Fridat. The star-studded project includes collaborations with Ed Sheeran on track “River” and Alicia Keys on “Like Home”.

Singer Liam Payne says fatherhood has “changed him in every single way”.

Payne welcomed his son Bear with singer Cheryl in March.

“It’s changed me in every single way. It’s the first thing you think about in the morning and the last thing you think about at night, It’s his first Christmas. He’s only going to be interested in the wrapping paper, so buy the shiniest one,” Payne told etonline.com.

The 24-year-old singer is looking forward to the festive period.

“My holiday plans are to spend some beautiful time with my son and to eat my own weight in lovely Christmas food. You might see a different Liam after Christmas and then you’ll see post-Christmas Liam with a new year resolution, hopefully,” he said.

Actress-director Jodie Foster says the reason she likes to make

movies is because it helps her evolve as a person.

“Some directors love cranes and CGI and specta-cle, but that is not why I make movies. I feel like I make movies because there are things I have to say in order to figure out who I am or my place in the world, or for me to evolve as a person. But until you get to the end of your movie, you don’t always realise why you were obsessed with that particu-lar thing,” Foster told The Observer newspaper, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Her comment comes after Foster said that she found acting “cruel and hard”.

Each year the recipient of the prestigious award is selected by the Hollywood Foreign Press Associa-tion (HFPA) board of directors and the selected person must be some-one who has made “an incredible impact on the world of entertain-ment”, reports variety.com.

HFPA president Meher Tatna said in a statement that Winfrey embodies this qualification for the generations she has “celebrated strong female characters on and off screen, and has been a role model for women and young girls for decades.”

“As a global media leader, phi-lanthropist, producer and actress, she has created an unparalleled con-nection with people around the world, making her one of the most respected and admired figures today.

Holding titles such as Chairman, CEO and Founder, Oprah is one of the most influ-ential women of our time, and this honor is well deserved espe-cially in this 75th anniversary year of the Golden Globe Awards,” Tatna added.

Veteran actor Morgan Freeman, who received the same award in 2012, announced Winfrey’s honoree status during the airing of the Hol-lywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA)

“Golden Globe 75th Anniversary Special”. Best known as the host of her multi-award-winning talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which ended in 2011, Win-frey is also the founder of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for

Girls in South Africa. She has been celebrated by the HFPA before, with a Golden Globe Award nomination for her role in “The Colour Purple” in 1986.

SCIENCE SUNDAY 17 DECEMBER 201712

Nasa has announced the discovery of an eighth planet orbit-

ing Kepler-90, a star comparable to the Sun located 2,545 light-years from the Earth.

Researchers Christo-pher Shallue and Andrew Vanderburg detected the planet, dubbed Kepler-90i, by applying Google’s machine-learning technol-ogy to data collected by Nasa’s Kepler Space Tele-scope, the US space agency said, Efe news reported.

With eight planets, the Kepler-90 system equals our own system in terms of the number of planets orbiting a single star. Astronomers have yet to detect a system with more than eight planets.

Kepler-90i is thought to have an average surface temperature of 425 degrees Celsius. The outermost planet in the system, Kepler-90h, is roughly the same distance from its star as the Earth is from the Sun.

“The Kepler-90 star sys-tem is like a mini version of our solar system. You

have small planets inside and big planets outside, but everything is scrunched in much closer,” Vanderburg, a Nasa Sagan Postdoctoral Fellow and astronomer at the University of Texas at Austin, said in a statement.

The notion of using artificial intelligence to analyse data from the Kepler telescope originated with Shallue, a senior soft-ware engineer with Google’s AI research team.

“In my spare time, I started googling for ‘finding exo-planets with large data sets’

and found out about the Kepler mission and the huge data set available,” Shallue said. “Machine learning really shines in sit-uations where there is so much data that humans can’t search it for themselves.”

Paul Hertz, head of Nasa’s Astrophysics Divi-sion in Washington, hailed the find. “Just as we expected, there are excit-ing discoveries lurking in our archived Kepler data, waiting for the right tool or technology to unearth them,” he said.

While exploring volcanic rocks on Scotland’s Isle of Skye, geologists have

found something out-of-this-world instead - materials from a previ-o u s l y u n k n o w n , 6 0 million-year-old meteorite impact.

The discovery was made while exploring a metre-thick layer at the base of a lava flow.

“We thought it was an ign-imbrite (a volcanic flow deposit),” said lead author Simon Drake, Associate Lecturer at Birkbeck Uni-versity of London. But when the team analysed the rock using an electron microprobe, they discov-ered that it contained rare minerals straight from outer space:

vanadium-rich and niobium-rich osbornite. These mineral forms have never been reported on Earth. They have, however, been collected by NASA’s Stardust Comet Sample Return Mission as space dust from the Wild 2 comet.

What is more, the osbornite is unmelted, suggesting that it was an original piece of the meteorite, said the study published in the journal Geology.

The team also identified reidite, an extremely high pressure form of zircon which is only ever asso-ciated in nature with impacts, along with native iron and other exotic mineralogy linked to impacts such as barringerite.

Nasa scientists are set to embark on a 756-kilometre expedi-tion in one of the most barren landscapes on Earth to survey an unexplored stretch of Antarctic ice.

The team led by two Nasa scientists will begin their two- to three-week traverse in an arc around the South Pole on December 21, Nasa said. “They are packing extreme cold-weather gear and scientific instruments onto sleds pulled by two tank-like snow machines called PistenBullys,” the US space agency added.

The expedition will ultimately help scientists to make the best assessment of the accuracy of data collected from space by the Ice Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), set to launch in 2018.

With a fast-firing laser instrument, ICESat-2 will measure the elevation of ice sheets and track change over time.

Even small amounts of melt across areas as vast as Greenland or Antarctica can result in large amounts of meltwater contributing to sea level rise.

To help document this, ICESat-2’s height change measurements will have a precision of less than an inch - ground-truthed, in part, with efforts like this Antarctic campaign.

The team will collect precise GPS data of the elevation at 88 degrees south, where ICESat-2’s orbits converge, providing thou-sands of points where the survey measurements can be compared to satellite data, Nasa said. “This traverse provides an extremely challenging and extremely cold way to assess the accuracy of the data,” said Kelly Brunt of Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center, and a research scientist at the University of Maryland.

TECHNOLOGYSUNDAY 17 DECEMBER 2017 13

The Washington Post

Before you buy any “smart” gadgets, make sure they’re not dumb.

This holiday season, a third of Americans plan to buy a smart home device, according to the Con-sumer Technology Association. And nearly half of Americans use dig-ital voice assistants, according to the Pew Research Center.

The good news is some of these connected gadgets are now actu-ally awesome. I picked three smart home devices that are genuinely useful enough that I’ve given them as a gift. . . including to myself.

1) Ring Video Doorbell 2, $200

Why it’s useful: Who’s at your door? The Ring is a doorbell that doubles as a Wi-fi security camera, so you can watch, hear and talk to whoever’s there through an app - even if you’re not at home. It alerts your phone with a live feed when somebody presses the bell, or any

time somebody comes near. No rewiring required. The Ring at my house caught package thieves and vandals, and produced video evi-dence I gave to the cops.

The downsides: To review, share and store video clips for 60 days requires a $30 per year sub-scription. If your existing doorbell isn’t powered, you’ll have to charge the Ring’s battery every 6 to 12 months.

2) Eero 2nd generation mesh Wi-fi router, $300 for two-hub pack

Why it’s useful: Eero solves the No. 1 home tech problem: Bad Wi-fi. The reason your Netflix stutters is there are corners in your house that one poor, overworked router just can’t reach. Eero uses multiple hubs to create a “mesh” that spreads Internet all over. That’s a lifesaver in big houses or ones (like mine) with walls filled with metal, plas-ter and and other materials that act like Kryptonite for radio waves.

The downsides: Eero is pricier

than stand-alone routers and also mesh systems like Google Wi-fi and Netgear Orbi. If you want Eero’s hubs to work well, you also can’t hide them under a stack of old Peo-ple magazines - they need to be out in the open. (Fortunately, they’re pretty.)

3) Ecobee 4 Thermostat, $250

Why it’s useful: Baby, it’s cold outside. . . and in that room at the back of your house. Thermostats measure the temperature one place (usually the hallway), but who hangs out there? The Ecobee 4

thermostat uses sensors to keep track of which room you’re in and what the temperature is there - and then makes adjustments accord-ingly. It’s smart enough to proactively compensate for a cold snap, and it should also be more energy efficient than an old-fash-ioned thermostat, though your savings may vary.

The downsides: You get one room sensor in the box, but extras cost $80 each. Your installation experience may vary: to make the Ecobee 4 work with my extremely ancient heating system, I had to buy a $15 external AC transformer.
