Located inside Barra Olympic Park, the Velodrome is the setting for the track cycling event, which finishes today. The arena was built specially for the Rio 2016 Games.

Constructed with a modern design, the structure will be maintained after the Games. It will be part of the Olympic Training Centre and will be used as a development site for high-performance athletes.

Events are similar to Olympic cycling, with time-trial, pursuit and team speed. Speed is the deciding factor!

Did you know?Track cycle bikes are fixed, or rather, they have no gears and a free wheel, and one of the most commonly used models is the tandem, with two seats. Competitions take place on a 250m-long oval track, and the longest event, pursuit, is four kilometres long – 16 laps of the track.

TriviaThe floor of the Velodrome is made from a kind of wood imported from Russia, Siberian pine. The track is 250m long. The arena has doors which block out wind, isolating the building and stopping currents from interfering in events.

CuriosidadesO piso do velódromo é feito com um tipo de madeira importado da Rússia, o pinus siberiano. A pista tem 250 metros de extensão. A arena tem portas que cortam o vento, isolando o prédio e impedindo que correntes de vento interfiram nas provas.

With three gold, one silver and two bronze medals on her CV, Brazilian Terezinha Guilhermina, an athletics competitor with a visual impairment, is one of the most well-known Paralympic athletes in the country. After finishing in fourth place in the 100m T11, the runner has three more events to win a dreamed about medal on home soil: 200m, 400m and the 4x100m relay.

Com três ouros, uma prata e dois bronzes no currículo, a brasileira Terezinha Guilhermina, atleta com deficiência visual do atletismo, é uma das Paralímpicas mais conhecidas do país. Após ficar em quarto lugar nos 100m T11, a velocista tem mais três provas para conseguir a sonhada medalha em casa: os 200m, os 400m, e o revezamento 4x100m.

What do you think of your competition arena?

The Olympic Stadium is very big and has an excellent structure. It’s a fantastic stage for a great show.

Which place do you like most at the Village?

The Entertainment Centre, for sure. It’s really good there, you always end up meeting new people, besides video games. My favourite is basketball, it’s super fun.

Who do you want to meet at the Athletes’ Village?

The Mexican athlete Angeles Ortiz Hernandez, who I have met at competitions around the world.

O que achou da sua arena de competição?

O Estádio Olímpico é muito grande e tem uma estrutura excelente. É um ótimo palco para um grande espetáculo.

Qual lugar você mais gostou na Vila?

O Centro de Entretenimento, com certeza. Lá é muito bom, você sempre acaba conhecendo gente nova, tirando que eu adoro os jogos. Meu favorito é o de basquete, é super divertido.

Quem você quer encontrar na Vila dos Atletas?

A mexicana Angeles Ortiz Hernandez, do atletismo, que eu conheci pelas competições mundo afora.

The plaza is a hub of buzzing activity here in the Paralympic Village. And on one of the greens, sat on a bench in front of a table, there is a frenzy of excitement. Greek Loainis Loanniois, 51, is fervently swapping pins with a crowd of excited souvenir-hungry athletes and delegation members.The Greek has been an avid pin collector since the Games came to his hometown of Athens in 2004. Since then, he has been to Torino, Beijing, Vancouver, London, Sochi and now Rio de Janeiro, building his epic collection of pins and exchanging the metallic badges as he continues his travels around the summer and winter Games.“These pins are for the memories and for collections. They represent the passion of the Games,” he said, with a

cigarette clasped firmly between his lips as he took a break from the improvised swap meet.The table was absolutely covered, but according to the man himself it is only a fraction of his total. “Back home in Athens, I have well over 10,000” Loainis said.And you can bet that by the closing ceremony next Sunday he will have added substantially to that number.

Mercado de pinsO gramado da Praça da Vila é um local de grande atividade e vai-e-vem. Sentado em uma cadeira, em frente a uma mesa, está Loainis Loanniois. Naquele pedaço de grama há um rebuliço a mais: uma intensa troca de pins entre o grego e atletas e membros das delegações, que ficam loucos pelos objetos à mostra.

Loanniois é um ávido colecionador de pins desde que os Jogos foram realizados em sua cidade natal, Atenas, em 2004. O grego esteve em Torino, Pequim, Vancouver, Londres, Sochi e, agora, Rio de Janeiro, trocando pins e construindo sua coleção ao longo dos Jogos de Verão e Inverno.“Os pins são lembranças e para coleções. Eles representam a paixão dos Jogos”, diz ele com um cigarro preso firmemente em seus lábios durante uma pausa do improvisado mercado.A mesa à sua frente está completamente coberta, mas segundo o grego trata-se apenas de uma fração de sua coleção. “Em Atenas, eu tenho mais de 10 mil pins”, afirma. Até o fim da cerimônia de abertura, no próximo domingo, você pode imaginar que este número vai ficar ainda maior.

Those who arrived at the Village without knowing the spirit of friendship and collaboration was one of the marks of the Paralympic Games certainly did not take long to notice this mood. You can see scenes of solidarity all around you at any time and anywhere: from guides assisting people with a visual impairment get around to “rides” on motorised wheelchairs.“You see a lot of people helping each other and getting to know one another around here, and between

people from very different places. This has a very important, very beautiful meaning,” said Argentine Bernardo Pignatano, while guiding his pupils Florencia Romero and Sergio Paz, both discus throwers in the T11 class (visual impairment).

German couple Barbaros Saylia and Lara Brinkford have also entered the wave of collaboration: Barbaros, a wheelchair user, carried Lara on his lap – with the latter moving the chair. “Today is my day to hitch a ride,” the sitting volleyball athlete joked, while folding his arms behind his head to relax. “This joyful spirit has definitely marked the Rio 2016 Games,” he concluded.

A união faz a forçaQuem chegou na Vila sem saber que o espírito de amizade e colaboração era uma das marcas dos Jogos Paralímpicos com certeza não demorou a notar este clima. É possível ver cenas de solidariedade por todos os lados e em qualquer momento no espaço: desde guias auxiliando pessoas com deficiência visual na caminhada até “caronas” sobre as cadeiras motorizadas.

“Você vê muita gente se ajudando e se conhecendo por aqui, e entre pessoas de muitos lugares diferentes.

Isso tem um significado muito importante, muito lindo”, diz o argentino Bernardo Pignatano, enquanto guia seus pupilos Florencia Romero e Sergio Paz, ambos arremessadores de disco da classe T11 (deficiência visual).O casal alemão Barbaros Saylia e Lara Brinkford também entrou na onda da colaboração: ele, cadeirante, a leva em seu colo - mas quem movimenta a cadeira é a dama. “Hoje é meu dia de ganhar carona”, brinca o atleta do voleibol sentado, enquanto cruza os braços por trás da cabeça, relaxando. “Esse espírito alegre com certeza já marcou os Jogos Rio 2016”, finaliza.

Ever thought about taking home the same flowers that decorate the medallists’ podium at the Rio 2016 Games? At the Athletes’ Village, you can. The same company that prepares the victory stage for athletes has opened a florist in the Village Plaza inside the mini-market, which offers a variety of options for those that think flowers make life a little more beautiful.Upon arriving at the shop, customers will be served by the friendly Mariana Martins. The saleswoman explains that the majority of clients want flowers to offer a warm welcome to guests at airports upon arrival or for medallists that return to the Village after being awarded on the podium. “Birthday celebrations and couples in love are also occasions that have been successful here,” she said.The shop is open from 9.00am to 9.00pm, until 21 September. The smaller pots cost R$20, while orchids and more elaborate bouquets can cost up to R$60. No matter the value, all are made up of one of Brazil’s main national symbols, which for Village residents is just a short walk away: the flora.

Lá vem a primaveraJá pensou em levar para casa as mesmas flores que decoram o pódio dos medalhistas nos Jogos Rio 2016? Na Vila dos Atletas, você pode. A empresa que prepara o palco de consagração dos atletas montou uma floricultura da Praça da Vila, que fica dentro do mercado, e oferece variedade de opções para os que apostam nas flores para deixar a vida mais bela.Ao chegar na loja, o comprador será atendido pela simpática Mariana Martins. A vendedora conta que a maior parte dos clientes quer as flores para oferecer boas-vindas calorosas aos convidados que chegam nos aeroportos ou aos medalhistas que voltam à Vila após serem consagrados no pódio. “Comemorações de aniversário e casais apaixonados também são ocasiões que fazem sucesso por aqui”, explica.A loja funciona diariamente de 9h às 21h, até o dia 21 de setembro. Os menores vasos podem ser adquiridos por R$ 20, enquanto orquídeas e buquês mais elaborados podem chegar a R$ 60. Não importa o valor, todas elas fazem de um dos principais símbolos nacionais, que para os moradores da Vila está a poucos passos de distância: a flora brasileira.

Less famous among tourists than postcards such as the Sugarloaf and Copacabana, Madureira is one of the most legendary neighbourhoods of Rio. Besides being a major commercial hub, the area is home to two of the most traditional samba schools – Portela e Império Serrano – and, since 2012, it has been the site of Parque Madureira. The park – the third largest green space in the city – is among the principal leisure areas in the north of Rio.From children bathing at the fountains and waterfalls to old couples dancing at the Samba Square and young people riding in cycle lanes, the park has become one of the most varied places in

the city. Besides the skate park, sport courts, a man-made beach and an outdoors gym complete the picture.In addition to outdoor leisure options, you can also watch live shows at the Fernando Torres Carioca Arena, a culture centre inside the park.Throughout the park’s 100,000m² there are almost 3km of flat flooring – ideal for wheelchair users – and tactile flooring for people with a visual impairment. You can get to the park by train or BRT.

Além de ser um importante polo comercial popular, a região é a casa das quadras de duas das mais tradicionais escolas de samba – Portela e Império Serrano – e, desde 2012, do Parque Madureira. A terceira maior área verde da cidade está entre as principais áreas de lazer da Zona Norte.

Das crianças tomando banho nos chafarizes e cascatas aos casais de velhinhos dançando na Praça do Samba, passando pelos jovens nas ciclovias, o Parque se tornou um dos ambientes mais diversificados da cidade. Pistas de skate, quadras esportivas, praia artificial e academia a céu aberto completam o cenário.

Além das opções de lazer ao ar livre, ainda é possível assistir a shows e

espetáculos na Arena Carioca Fernando Torres, centro cultural que fica dentro do parque. Em sua área de 100 mil metros quadrados, há quase 3km de piso liso, ideal para cadeirantes, e piso tátil para pessoas com deficiência visual. É possível chegar ao local de trem ou BRT.

Tom the mascot has won everyone over with his charm and joy. But did you know that he was named in tribute to Tom Jobim, one of the creators of bossa nova and composer of one of the most famous songs in the world, “The Girl from Ipanema”?

The song was written with poet Vinicius de Moraes when the pair were living in the neighbourhood of Ipanema, in 1962. Tom, who passed away in 1994, was a talented composer and pianist and was recorded by artists such as Frank Sinatra and Amy Winehouse.

Forest creatureTom the mascot is a magical creature, a mixture of all plants of the Brazilian forests, such as the Amazon and Pantanal.Tom was born from the explosion of joy when Brazil won the right to host the Paralympic Games. Besides his friendly nature, Tom has special powers: he is capable of pulling from his hair (made of leaves!) the most unusual of objects, and in this way he can resolve any problem!

Hanging out at the VillageGuess who we found strolling around the Village! A miniature doll of Tom the mascot! And he was in fine company, Turkish athlete and bronze medallist Aysegul Pehlivanlar, who won the medal in the 10m air-pistol T2 category last Friday.
