Shire won’t budge on supermartBY ANGELA VALENTE

RIDDELLS Creek residents willcontinue to fight a Macedon RangesCouncil decision to grant a permit fora supermarket in the town.

About 80 residents gathered at thecouncil meeting on Wednesday toshow they were united in their opposi-tion to the supermarket.

In February, the council approvedthe permit application at 1-3 StationStreet that included a plan for a super-market with retail outlets and 179parking spaces.

At the Wednesday meeting,Cr Henry McLaughlin sought torescind the decision but the council didnot agree.

On March 22, four Riddells Creekresidents — Lyn Hovey, JennyGrounds, John Ball and architectYvonne von Hartel — lodged anappeal at the Victorian Civil andAdministrative Tribunal over thepermit issue.

At last week’s meeting,Cr McLaughlin put forward a motion, asking the council that, with the mat-ter going to the tribunal, it should nolonger support the issue of a planningpermit.

The motion was defeated. It was met with shouting from the

gallery, with residents yelling ‘‘what adisgrace’’, with another saying,‘‘boycott the supermarket’’.

Cr McLaughlin said the motion was

not about planning but a vision forRiddells Creek and how the councilresponded to a community that wasasking for help.

‘‘We cannot change the decision thecouncil made last month, but we candecide tonight which side of the tableMacedon Ranges Council will besitting when we walk through thedoors at VCAT,’’ he said at the meet-ing.

‘‘The complex is the most significantdevelopment in Riddells Creek in 20 ifnot 40 years.

‘‘It’s probably the most significantdevelopment Riddells Creek will see inthe next 20 to 40 years.

‘‘There are many problems with thisplan and one does not need to be a

planning professional to understand.’’A petition with 335 signatures was

tabled at the meeting.Cr Jennifer Anderson said the coun-

cil needed to show solidarity with adecision it had already taken.

‘‘Last month I didn’t support theapplication and I still feel that way.But we can’t flip and flop and go backon our decisions.’’

Ms Hovey, a member of TransitionTown Riddell, was disappointed bythe council’s decision but vowed not togive up the fight.

‘‘You could see the passion of thecrowd. People are very respectful andpassionate about Riddells Creek.

‘‘It might have been an 8-1 [councilvote] setback, but all is not lost.’’

Sunbury Girl Guides — including Umindi, Emily, Tahlia

and Nickieran — have taken an extra step for charity.

Thirteen girls and two group leaders took part in Care

Australia’s Walk in Her Shoes challenge to help make life

just a little easier for people in developing countries. The

Sunbury team walked 10,000 steps a day for a week late

last month. Group leader Annette Swaffield says the girls,

aged five to 11, loved the challenge and learned about the

hardships women and children overseas have to go

through. ‘‘We spent a month working up to it, teaching

them about what women and children go through in

developing countries. When we started, we encouraged

them to walk as many steps as possible and keep

increasing it. We were surprised how many of them

reached 10,000 steps on the first day.’’ The group is

aiming to raise $600 and is still looking for donations. To

Spring Street getsa $14m questionBY TARA MURRAY

HUME Council is seeking answers on theelusive $14.7 million allocated by theprevious Labor government for agovernment services building inBroadmeadows .

The Coalition government announcedin March last year the building would nolonger be built. In the 2012-13 statebudget, it diverted the money for the ‘central activities areas and strategic sites,’to be used statewide.

On February 6, mayor Geoff Porterwrote to then treasurer Kim Wells, askingfor an update on the funding and whetherHume would get any of it.

In his email, Cr Porter suggestedprojects in Broadmeadows, Craigieburnand Sunbury that could well use funding.

At a council meeting last Monday, CrAdem Atmaca expressed hisdisappointment that the council was yet tobe given a reply from the stategovernment.

‘‘This $14.7 million was allocated toHume Council for its central businessdistrict works.

‘‘However, a change of government saw

that we got neither the building nor the$14.7 million. . . the money was takenback and distributed through all thecentral business activity areas across thestate.

‘‘It’s like the reversal of Robin Hood. They are taking money from the poor anddistributing it among the wealthysuburbs.’’

Cr Atmaca said it was not the first timethe council had failed to receive a responsefrom the government.

‘‘We are [also] having issues with otherdepartments . . . [from whom] we aren’tgetting responses and it’s verydisappointing.’’

Cr Jack Ogilvie said two Hume projects— parking at Sunbury and Craigieburnstations — were important.

‘‘They [the government] have broughtthe money forward to budgets, saying it’sstill there for something.’’

Cr Atmaca advocated that the stategovernment commit the funding back toprojects in Hume.

He said the parking situations inCraigieburn and Sunbury, both majorissues, could be solved with less than halfthe $14.7 million.

Time for a cuppa and more as house becomes like homeSUNBURY Neighbourhood House is hoping itsnew weekly session will attract more people andvolunteers.

Time for a Cuppa, which starts early nextmonth, is different from other house programs.

‘‘People don’t have to need a reason to attendeach week, but it will be somewhere to go andsomewhere to be,’’ says House co-ordinatorAnita Barnard.

‘‘They may just want to get out of the houseand use the computers or do crosswords and notwant to talk to anyone and that’s OK.

‘‘Establishing social connections in the com-munity is good for improving people’s health.’’

She said the activities would vary, dependingon what people wanted to do and the skills of thevolunteers running the program.

‘‘We will look at having a conversation group,

card games, jigsaw puzzles, walking sessions andthings like that. We are looking at getting a guestspeaker once a term and getting some line-dancing lessons.

‘‘We will always have different group activitiesrunning, including looking at doing recipe swap-ping and walking.

‘‘The sky is the limit with the opportunities wehave and we are looking at using three areas in

the centre, allowing for different activities.’’Ms Barnard said volunteers were needed.

‘‘People have the opportunity to be involved asa participant, volunteer or as both.’’

The house offers educational, social, recre-ational and support programs for people of allbackgrounds, ages and cultures.

Rattle and hum on Sunbury lineBY TARA MURRAY

MORE frequent and longer trains on the Sunbury lineare the highlights for Sunbury residents in a$30 billion state plan detailing a vision forMelbourne’s transport system.

The Network Development Plan — MetropolitanRail, released on Wednesday by Public TransportVictoria chief executive Ian Dobbs, details the infra-structure and services needed over the next 20 years.

The Melbourne Metro rail tunnel — which will runfrom South Kensington to South Yarra via Parkvilleand the Domain — is the key to the project.

Mr Dobbs said the PTV ‘‘fervently’’ believed in theneed for the nine-kilometre rail tunnel, estimated tocost $5 billion.

He said the tunnel would allow the system to growto meet the expected patronage of 1.1 billion board-ings a year by 2031.

Under the plan, Sunbury trains will run through theMetro tunnel.

‘‘Implementation of the Melbourne Metro rail tun-nel project will enable more Sunbury line services tooperate and the opportunity to operate larger-capacity trains on that corridor,’’ the report says.

It’s expected once the tunnel is built it will cater foran additional four Sunbury line services an hour dur-ing peak-hour.

From 2020, larger-capacity trains will run on theSunbury line, which can carry up to 1600 passengersper train.

Completion of the Regional Rail Link in 2016 willcoincide with more trains on the Sunbury line. Bythen, it’s expected there will be nine trains an hourduring peak hour on the Sunbury line and three dur-ing off-peak times.

Signalling upgrades on the Sunbury line will alsohelp increase services.

Public Transport Users Association president TonyMorton said Sunbury and Craigieburn should benefitfrom the completion of the Regional Rail Link.

‘‘According to the PTV documents, this shouldallow additional peak-hour trains to run on theselines, and boost the frequency to a train every 10minutes all day.

‘‘We urge the state government to provide fundingin the budget to allow these additional services torun.’’

Dr Morton criticised the elevating of theMelbourne Metro rail tunnel project, saying repla-cing Melbourne’s antiquated signalling system woulddo more to improve capacity.

‘‘The plan is fine but the sequence is wrong,’’ DrMorton said. ‘‘By putting Melbourne Metro – themost expensive project by far – ahead of everything, they are jeopardising everything else.’’

Path paves saferroute to schoolBY ANGELA VALENTE

A FOOTPATH to be built alongGisborne-Melton Road will connect anew housing estate with a path leadingto Gisborne Secondary College.

In November, the Weekly high-lighted residents’ concerns about a dirtwalking track, near The Willows inGisborne, with waist-high grass theysaid posed a safety risk to childrenwalking to school.

The track meets a concrete footpathjust after the children’s crossing onGisborne-Melton Road near theschool.

But this section of the road has beenoverlooked by Macedon RangesCouncil, which has instead promised tobuilt a footpath on the other side ofGisborne Secondary College.

Council director of assets and opera-tions Dale Thornton said the pathwould extend from the children’s

crossing to Dalton Street. The housingestate in Dalton Street will also get afootpath.

The council will spend $260,000 onexpanding its network of footpaths.

Mr Thornton said new sections offootpaths were completed in CorinellaRoad in Woodend, creating a pathwayfrom Ashbourne Road to the Woodendrailway station car park.

“We’ve targeted high-traffic areaslocated in and around schools, businessdistricts, community facilities andareas where there are missing sectionsin the existing [footpath] network,’’ hesaid.

New footpaths will also be built at:Argyle Street in New Gisborne,Kilmore Road in Gisborne, Beauchampand Barton streets in Kyneton, HighStreet in Lancefield, Smith Street inMacedon, Park Lane, Station Streetand Jinker Way in Romsey and Brookeand Wood streets in Woodend.

House proud, forthree decades

Going home: Lis Rauch has retired after a long stint with theneighbourhood house.

GOONAWARRA Neighbourhood House won’t be thesame with the retirement of manager Lis Rauch.

Ms Rauch, who has been at the centre since it began, hasretired after serving the Goonawarra community for 30years. She was farewelled with a celebration last month.

Ms Rauch last week told the Weekly she didn’t expect tobe at the house for so long. She started as a volunteer withthe Goonawarra advancement committee in 1983.

‘‘When I started volunteering for the committee therewere only 60 houses in Goonawarra and there was nothinghere [services and infrastructure].

‘‘I was then employed to lobby for infrastructure like theschools, childcare and neighbourhood house.’’

In 1988, she took up the role as neighbourhood houseco-ordinator and was appointed as the manager of the newGoonawarra Neighbourhood House in 1990.

‘‘I have strong memories of making this happen. There’sno one special memory. It was about working to provide afacility, not just for Goonawarra but for all of Sunbury.

‘‘I’m pleased where the house has got to and it’s quite anasset to the community which I’m proud of.’’

Staff member Sue Burke said Ms Rauch was integral inestablishing and growing the centre.

Ms Rauch, 59, said she would spend her retirementtravelling, working in the garden and spending time withher 17 grandchildren. — Tara Murray

Timely warning rings true

Armed with alarms: Brett Magrath warns residents of the importance of smoke alarms. Picture: Paul Rovere

BY ANGELA VALENTE

AFTER more than 30 house fires last year inthe Macedon Ranges and Sunbury areas, theCFA is warning residents to ensure they haveworking smoke alarms in their homes.

Kyneton Fire Brigade captain Brett Magrathwants residents to change their smoke alarmbatteries this Sunday as part of the annual‘change your clocks’ campaign.

Mr Magrath says fire is unpredictable andresidents need to be careful.

‘‘Smoke alarms are designed to wake you up.That’s what they are for; they can detect smokelong before we can while we’re sleeping.’’

Last month, a dryer caught fire in a house inBeauchamp Street in Kyneton.

Mr Magrath said residents needed to takeprecautions, including cleaning lint from dry-ers, and taking extra care when cooking.

CFA deputy chief officer Steve Warringtonsaid smoke alarms should be placed betweeneach bedroom area and the rest of the house.

“If you sleep with your bedroom door shut, consider having a smoke alarm inside the bed-room. In a multiple-storey home a smokealarm is required on every storey, located in thepath that people will use to evacuate.

“It’s vital that smoke alarms are locatedin the right places, tested regularly and batter-ies replaced every year. So, at the end of day-light saving when you change back yourclocks, change your smoke alarm batteries

with long-life alkaline batteries.’’

Mr Magrath said elderly residents whoneeded help changing their smoke alarmbattery could call the CFA on 5422 1241.

Shire avoids hubbubMACEDON Ranges Council will investigate new sitesin Gisborne for an early-years hub — but it won’tdisclose where.

The council adopted a report in-camera at a meetingon Wednesday night about the proposed new siteoptions for the hub.

Mayor Roger Jukes said the council workedthrough a ‘‘long list’’ of potential sites to determine themost suitable one and would start investigation andconsultation with key groups.

‘‘Once we’ve had an opportunity to speak to therelevant stakeholders and hear their feedback, thecouncil will again consider the matter,’’ he said.

The council will keep the report confidential toensure information on the potential sites is ‘‘managedappropriately and does not compromise council or anyother party’’.

Cr Sally Piper said the council was committed toworking with the community to achieve a suitable sitefor the hub. ‘‘We understand that the community hasan interest in this project and appreciate your patienceas we work through the required processes.’’

Last year, the council considered having the hubdevelopment at Gisborne’s Daly Reserve but it backedoff after a community campaign against the decision.

In December, the council withdrew its plan for thereserve and decided to look for other sites. The early-years hub could still be built on the reserve if no othersite is deemed suitable.

The old homesteads in Melbourne’s north-west make it a favourite site for ghost hunters. Tara Murray joined one tour searching for spectres.

Alex Mifsud suddenly stops talking and asks: ‘‘Did anyone else see that?’’ He looks for another moment, then says: “There was a lady just ran across the room. It’s the fi rst time I’ve seen someone run across this room

like that.’’ But it wasn’t just any lady. It was a ghost. It isn’t the fi rst time Alex claims to have seen one, nor

will it be the last. Misfud is one of the hosts of Lantern Ghost tours. On this occasion he is taking a group through Point Cook Homestead.

‘‘People get pushed, poked, their hair gets lifted,’’ he says. ‘‘Some people hear their names being called and others can smell and hear things. Every night is different. Some nights there’s lots of activity, then other nights we don’t get as much.’’

Jacqui Travaglia started Lantern Ghost Tours Williamstown in 2009. She and her partner Andrew Wishart have expanded the tours to Altona, Point Cook and Eynesbury homesteads, and overnight tours to places like the infamous J-Ward asylum in Ararat.

Travaglia has seen ghosts for as long as she can remember.

‘‘I grew up in a haunted house in Williamstown and I used to see a little old woman walking around the house and hear footsteps that were unexplained. A little old woman used to live there with her husband and she liked to cook.

‘‘Then I moved to England and there’s a lot of history and ghost activity there as well. I did every single ghost tour I could do and stayed at every haunted place I could. Then my friends would come along with me and go ghost hunting. Their friends started to join and then I thought, I could get a bit extra for this and cover my costs, and it developed into a business.’’

Travaglia says the Point Cook Homestead is one of the most active places for ghosts, with at least 12 there. They include a little boy who drowned, a stablehand,

a cat, a couple, an RAAF pilot and the ghosts of the property’s owner Thomas Chirnside, his brother Andrew and his wife Mary.

‘‘Point Cook Homestead has the most activity and we haven’t had a tour without any action. It’s not scary, but a welcoming tour.

‘‘At Eynesbury we believe there’s a lot of spirits there as they use to hold wakes there. When somebody died they would hold a wake and put the body on the lounge-room table and people would come and see the body and they would keep a visual on it in case it woke up. That’s why we believe there’s a lot of bodies trapped.

‘‘The scariest [place] is the J-Ward asylum [in Ararat] which housed the criminally insane. We stay overnight there and it’s quite uncomfortable. We had one guest we believe was possessed and we’ve had people locked in the cells, which is physically impossible.’’

Travaglia says many people who look for ghosts are sceptics, who want to be proved wrong or right.

‘‘We have a lot of sceptics come to our tours. We have a number of different tours catering for those who want to research it more with equipment, and others involving the general public.

‘‘Some walk away more sceptical, but have a good night having enjoyed the stories. The best thing is when they change their minds. Sceptics are more scared than the non-sceptics when they experience something.

‘‘For us it’s about the history, the stories and the ghosts. Some of the stories are more interesting than fi ction.’’

Paul Levey didn’t believe in ghosts until 2006, when he took over The Coach & Horses Inn in Clarkfi eld, which many people call Australia’s most haunted pub.

‘‘I thought the stories were sort of not true,’’ he says.

‘‘My wife was the believer. But I have since changed my mind. There’s whistling upstairs, unexplained noises, stomping upstairs, glasses break, chairs and cutlery move and you can come in the morning and the stove top is on. We get lots of people taking photos on the stairs and they will send them in and we’ll see a person in the background.’’

Levey isn’t the pub’s fi rst owner to change his mind about ghosts.

Frank Nelson and his wife bought the hotel in March 1984. It took only three days for Nelson to experience his fi rst ghost. He was pushed down the stairs resulting in an ankle broken in three spots. The fi nal straw was when Nelson felt a hand between his leg and the plaster cast. He and his wife moved out a short time later.

Levey says there are three known ghosts who haunt the pub, including a Chinese man who was found hanging in the stables after a fi ght over gold, and Irish man Patrick Regan, who was murdered after talking about fi nding gold. The third is a little girl who was murdered by her father and thrown in the well at the rear of the hotel. The girl, who was intellectually disabled, is often seen around the staircases; a number of children have reported seeing her.

Levey says many people come to the pub, just to see if they can see ghosts.

‘‘There’s three types of people who come to the pub to see the ghosts. You have the people who come to take photos, you have the psychics and mediums, and then you have those dressed all in black who come on the full moon at midnight.’’

The Blackwood Hotel is another which claims it’s the most haunted pub in Australia.

‘‘I’m not a great believer of ghosts, but you get a sixth sense about things,’’ says Heinz Mueller, who took over the hotel three years ago.

‘‘When I’m doing my rounds, you get a feeling around the [former] morgue and you feel the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Staff members, some who have been here for over 20 years, won’t work by themselves, so that says something.’’

He says there are four ghosts at the hotel and describes them as ‘‘friendly.’’

The most famous are Laura Dalton, who was burnt to death in the 1940s, and a miner who sits next to the fi re. ‘‘Everyone who comes here, comes to see if they can see the ghosts. We take them on tours of the cellars and downstairs. Unit three has been built into the morgue and people come from far and wide to stay in that room.’’

In 2007, a TV series, Haunted Australia, visited nine locations looking for ghosts, three were in Melbourne’s outer north-west. They visited the Coach & Horses Inn and the Blackwood Hotel, as well as the Melton Equestrian Centre.

The old Sunbury University campus, which was originally the Sunbury Lunatic Asylum, is another spot where ghosts have been reported, while there’s reports of a maid being seen at Salesian Bridge also in Sunbury.

Travaglia puts this down to the fact that a lot of the old buildings are still in existence.

‘‘I think the reason for that is that we we have a lot of old homesteads like Eynesbury and Point Cook. On the other side of the city, they have lost a lot of that and the history with it.’’

Back at Point Cook, sadly for Misfud, no one else sees the lady running across the room. On this occasion, it was the only ghost to appear on the tour and many people are left disappointed.

Opinion will always be divided on whether ghosts are real, but for people like Mifusd believing is only the beginning.

Population boomor bust for Hume?BY HELEN GRIMAUX

BOOM times in Hume may be good for business, but there are real concerns about the ongoingaffordability and sustainability of new residentialsubdivisions.

In its submission to the state government’sMelbourne planning strategy discussion paper,Hume Council echoes concerns cited by thegovernment’s own senior ministerial advisor RozHansen.

‘‘We know that growing the boundary furtherand further out has not solved the affordablehousing issue,’’ Ms Hansen said last week.

‘‘We have an increase in the number of youthout on the fringe who aren’t taking participatingin the education system, who are becomingunemployed and disillusioned with their lot.’’

Last week, Hume Council sent in its ownsubmission on the government’s discussion paper— the latter prepared by Ms Hansen and heradvisory committee — calling for an authorityindependent of government to be responsible for‘‘the co-ordination of land release and infrastruc-

ture delivery to ensure the equitable and timelyprovision of state infrastructure spending’’.

‘‘Governance surrounding growth areas needsto be improved,’’ Hume’s submission says, calling for a review of the current Growth AreaAuthority. ‘‘The current regime of authorities, such as the GAA, duplicates council planningprocesses (and) needs to be reviewed in favour ofan authority charged with co-ordinating theplanning of growth corridors and leaving thedetailed planning and implementation of specificareas to council,’’ it states.

The council criticises the government’s discus-sion paper for failing to properly identify orpresent solutions to address what it termed ‘‘thegrowing disparity between the two Melbournes’’.In February, Hume mayor Geoff Porter releasedOne Melbourne or Two? on behalf ofMelbourne’s 10 interface councils, includingHume.

The report confirmed shortfalls in governmentfunding that meant transport, jobs, education, medical, aged care and community facilities werenot coping with the population boom.

Beginner drivers step up to the L-plate

Key to safety: HWLLENcommunity actionleader Huon Damm anddriver educationorganiser Nicky Leitchare putting people inthe driver’s seat.

LEARNING to drive, for Melburnians, is almosta must.

With many parts of the city not well served bypublic transport, cars become indispensable forshopping or dropping children off at school . . . ifyou can drive.

Hume Whittlesea Local Learning and Employ-ment Network (HWLLEN) has identified a gapin driver education services for people aged 21and above, and especially young parents whoselearner-driving has been interrupted.

‘‘Research done by Centrelink also showedmany middle-aged migrant women have given up

on ever getting their licence and mainly becauseof the costs,’’ community action leader HuonDamm told the Weekly. ‘‘Such people in the30-35-year-old age bracket are quite dis-connected.’’

HWLLEN is offering free driving lessons forolder learners as an adjunct to its regular L2Pdriver education courses.

The Ignition initiative is open to Hume resid-ents aged 21 and over.

And if you are already fully qualified to drive, consider becoming a mentor to others.

Gridlock, but railcrossing up in airBY TARA MURRAY

DESPITE increasing calls for a third railcrossing in Sunbury, when and where it willbe built is still a mystery.

Hume Council and developer Places Vic-toria (formerly VicUrban) had an agreementunder which the developer was to build athird crossing after 750 homes had been builtin the Jacksons Hill estate.

As reported by the Weekly on September25, a decision on the crossing was to be madeafter the council elections in October.

The council and developer had earlier saidtechnical problems had prevented themannouncing a decision by last August.

Last week, both said a decision had stillnot been made.

The original plan was to build the newcrossing using the Jacksons Hill viaduct con-necting to Vineyard Road.

Sunbury Business Association presidentMichael Osborne said the town was indesperate need of the third crossing,

especially since the introduction of Metrotrains in November.

‘‘I know many people won’t go into thetown centre at a certain time as they can’tmove.

‘‘Strip shopping involves traffic movingregularly, but the main streets can be grid-locked due to traffic.’’

Hume’s infrastructure director SteveCrawley said the council was still in discus-sions with Places Victoria.

“Both have encountered significantenvironmental, engineering and heritageissues with the viaduct road route. Weare, therefore, investigating alternativeroutes.”

A Places Victoria spokeswoman said it hadbeen awaiting a decision from the council onits preferred option for the crossing.

‘‘The council has requested Places Victoriaundertake a detailed investigation of analternative alignment. Places Victoria willcontinue to work closely with the council toresolve this issue.’’

Stalwart’s legacyright up our alleyBY TARA MURRAY

THE family of the late Alex Dacakis, a well-known Sunbury identity, are proud and excitedthat Hume Council has approved plans to namea laneway in the town in his honour.

After a year of community consultation, thecouncil last Monday approved the decision toname a right-of-way between Brook and Stationstreets as Dacakis Lane.

The council received no objections duringthis process.

The council has submitted an application tothe Registrar of Geographic Names for reviewand registration in Vicnames.

Mr Dacakis, who was also known as AlexLloyd, moved to Sunbury is 1942 and lived hereuntil his death in 2005.

‘‘We feel really proud that they are going torecognise him,’’ said Mr Dacakis’s daughterGeorgia, who was at the council meeting.

‘‘We are really proud of his contribution toSunbury and he was responsible for bringing anumber of the Greek community out to

Sunbury.’’ In 1947, Mr Dacakis and his wifeMary bought their first two businesses adjacentto each other in O’Shannessy Street.

Ms Dacakis said it was the beginning of herfather and his brothers buying a number ofbusinesses in town.

‘‘At one point [in the 1970s], the brothers‘bookended’ both ends of the southern side ofO’Shannessy between Station and Brookstreets.

The family still owns a number of businessesin O’Shannessy Street and have a family farm inDiggers Rest.

Mr Dacakis’s wife Mary, who lived in BrookStreet for 60 years until last year, said: ‘‘I’m veryexcited the council has decided to go ahead withthis.’’

‘‘He helped Sunbury grow and it’s nice tohave this happen. The whole family is reallyhappy about it.’’

Cr Jack Ogilvie, Jack Medcraft, Helen Patsi-katheodorou and Ann Potter all spoke at thecouncil meeting and welcomed the decision toname the lane after Mr Dacakis.

Bombs awayExpert tips were drop-punted and handballed to Gisborne Secondary College year 7 students at a skills

class with Essendon AFL players. Bombers Sean Gregory, Lauchlan Dalgleish, Ariel Steinberg, Dyson

Heppell, Heath Hocking, Kyle Hardingham and Luke Davis demonstrated the game’s finer points.

Teacher Tenielle Brown said 60 students out of 170 were chosen to take part. ‘‘We had a tough decision

to choose them. The kids who handed in all their work were rewarded with the experience. The players

talked about resilience and what was needed to become an AFL footballer. The students really loved it

and are still talking about it.’’

Real advice on funeral insurance from a name you can trust.Thinking about funeral insurance? If you are concerned about funeral expenses, then taking out funeral insurance may not be the most suitable option in protecting your loved ones either fi nancially, or more importantly, emotionally. Many of us have seen these products advertised on television but unfortunately what may seem a great idea can often have a sting in its tail. For example did you know that:• Many people are being caught out by premiums that start low, but increase steadily over time.• In some cases, you have to keep paying your monthly premiums until you reach 90 years of age.• As people struggle to continue paying these increasing premiums, they risk losing it all if payments are missed.• The money that you invest in these products doesn’t even have to be used to pay for a funeral. So there is no guarantee that your fi nancial wishes will be carried out.In most cases, people end up paying far more in premiums than what the policy will actually pay out. For example, a $6000 funeral policy taken out at age 60, could end up costing $7000 by age 70, $28,000 by age 80 and even up to $85,000 by age 90! This still doesn’t guarantee that the policy will cover funeral expenses at the time, or that it will even be used for funeral expenses at the time.

Let’s compare funeral insurance with a capital guaranteed prepaid funeral: PREPAID FUNERAL FUNERAL INSURANCE Able to pay off in instalments? Know exactly how much you will pay? Know exactly what is included and covered? No risk of cancellation from missed payments? Flexible, transferable and capital guaranteed? Advantages for pension means-testing? Guarantees the money goes towards the funeral? Guarantees your choice of funeral service?

There is no peace of mind with funeral insurance. There is only the ongoing worry about how much you will have to pay

with the risk of losing all that you have paid.

A prepaid funeral with TJ Scott & Son means that you only pay for

the funeral service that you want at today’s prices – guaranteed. It’s

that simple. So, talk to the professionals in funeral planning. TJ Scott

& Son believe funeral planning ought to be done well, so talk to your

fi nancial adviser or ask us for a free, no-obligation quote. TJ Scott &

Son can also arrange an information session with your community

organisation or service group.

Life-saving services cut in pay rowWhile Health Minister David Davis has as early asFebruary this year sung the praises of MICAspecialist ambulances and declared his commitmentto ensure their rollout in regional Victoria, we inthe Macedon Ranges have seen a dramaticreduction in their numbers.

There used to be nine MICA positions and nowthere are four.

Of them, one has been on sick leave for morethan a year and two of the remaining three are teammanagers regularly rostered off to administer andmeet, reducing their availability.

The reduction of MICA positions has happenedby attrition and posts haven’t been refilled.

There are even MICA-trained people here whocan’t use those skills because they are not in aMICA position.

The MICA paramedic has the highest level oftraining in the service.

They are trained to place patients into an inducedcoma. This is a skill usually performed only byanaesthetists and some emergency doctors.

MICA paramedics are able to transmit viaBluetooth 12-lead ECGs to selected hospitals toassist in most effective patient management of heart

attacks. They can be crucial in a wide range ofchildhood health crises.

The cutback of these life-saving services to ourcommunity is in the context of this governmentdragging out the pay dispute with all paramedics:the highest trained and lowest paid in the country. They have been offered a minuscule pay rise and aloss of holiday pay.

Paramedics are leaving to go interstate for betterpay, making staff shortages and the issue ofresponse times really difficult.

Out here in the Ranges we rely on the ambulance

being there should we need it.The Napthine government has a responsibility to

fix the situation. “Now!” is the operative wordwhen you think ambulance.

Barry McDonald, Woodend

Give credit where it’s dueLet us affirm and celebrate the considerableachievements of the federal government under JuliaGillard over the past years.

It is shameful that the media and Tony Abbotthave tried, at every opportunity, to tear her down. This negativity must stop.

Let’s cease this relentless and nasty criticism andremember this government’s achievements.

These include the disability insurance scheme, the NBN, and the healthy economy which survivedthe global financial crisis.

The list also includes the apology for forcedadoption, serious attempts to address climatechange and curb the big polluters, and the commis-sioning of the Gonski report on education.

In the next few months, let us open our mindsand look at all issues fairly and not be swayed by‘cruel and prejudiced’ media attention.

Pain relief’sa specialtyConstant pain in hands or limbs

because of arthritis is something practitioner Patricia Perrie of Natural Choices Clinic in Riddells Creek can help ease. A naturopath and fellow arthritis sufferer, she has been treating herself and others to manage pain for years.“I have rheumatoid, osteo-arthritic and psoriatic arthritis along with fi bromyalgia,” Trish says. She says there are many forms of arthritic diseases, including 80 rheumatic conditions affecting millions of people worldwide.“Contributing factors such as family history, dietary indiscretions, personality, accidents and injuries are the basis of many immune defi ciencies, including arthritis.”She says there is no magical cure for arthritis and that fi nding treatments to manage each individual’s pain is often trial and error.“Drugs may offer relief to some but come with side effects and these often last the rest of that person’s life. We all work hard but have different tolerances

when it comes to pain. I work towards creating a tailored program to suit the individual’s needs for better health.”The clinic provides bowen therapy, biomesotherapy (pain treatment), dorn spinal therapy, massage, refl exology, and lymph drainage.“We also use homeopathic and herbal medicines, along with vitamin, mineral and nutritional therapies.”The clinic has a male sports therapist who works nights for clients who prefer a more intense approach to muscle health.“There is nobody that cannot be helped in one way or another. I have helped many people achieve wonderful results through my advice and treatments.”Trish hosts community talks on the different types of arthritis and has spoken at the Victorian Arthritis Association.

Restoringbalance to bodiesThose who want to try a different

approach to health may benefi t from traditional Chinese medicine.Riddells Creek traditional Chinese medicine practitioner Christine Ryan uses acupuncture and cupping, and prescribes traditional Chinese herbs. She also gives diet advice and shows people exercises and stretches for them to do when needed.“Clients come to me with a range of issues including musculo-skeletal pain, fatigue, stress, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, menstrual problems and fertility,” she says. “My job is to look for what is out of balance in their body and put it back into sync to enable the body to heal itself.”Christine says working in the health industry is very rewarding.“Helping someone overcome fertility issues and seeing the joy a baby brings, reducing a client’s pain and improving people’s quality of life are all things I enjoy doing and can do through Chinese medicine.“I have the privilege of helping people improve their lives, health and wellbeing

and I love seeing clients’ health improving due to my treatments.”Christine’s journey to Chinese medicine started when she studied massage therapy. She discovered cupping and became hooked on improving health. Completing her degree in Chinese medicine at age 52 was the fi nal string to Christine’s bow and she says she looks forward to treating many more people.“I’m planning to spend a month in China using my skills and expertise working in a hospital. And I can’t wait to bring back new treatments and knowledge to share with clients at my home-clinic in Riddells Creek.”

Real Estate Today

It’s a hot topic at the moment. Should I fix my interest rate on my home loan, or wait a while? What does it

mean? It’s an opportune time to take a look at this issue. We at Dunlop are interested in all aspects of real

estate, but do not offer financial advice. My comments are for general interest only. Home and commercial

loans come with a fixed interest rate (it does not vary during the term), a variable interest rate (it rises or

falls during the loan term in accordance with a formula, usually the cash rate set by the Reserve Bank

of Australia) or, sometimes, a combination of both. Interest rates are currently low in historical terms.

Older readers will remember times when interest rates for home loans were in double digit figures. Some

financial forecasters say interest rates may go lower, but who can predict the future. If you have a loan on

which the interest charged is in at a variable rate then you should have a hard look at fixing it to a set rate.

You should get competent financial advice before doing so. The advantage is in that if, in the future the

cycle turns and interest rates begin a phase of rises, you will be protected. Your low interest rate will be

locked in, and not subject to any rise. An interest and expertise in all aspects of real estate is in at the core

of our business. If you have any question about a sale, purchase or rental, or have a question on any real

estate matter, feel free to contact me John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call into our offices at Sunbury and

Gisborne to talk about it.

A unique 10 acres (approx.) property with two dwellings midst the central highlands overlooking

magnifi cent vistas of Mount Macedon. This property is a terrifi c opportunity for a tree change or a small

business with planning permits to convert the 2 dwellings into a Bed & Breakfast and Café/Restaurant.

A delightful combination of lifestyle and rural living makes this a lifestyle must. The Orchards produce

a tidy little profi t from 300+ chestnut trees, 100+ cherry varieties, plus various heirloom apples, pears,

pomegranates, mulberry, persimmons, walnuts and Nashi pears, plums and various other varieties all

growing in Trentham’s Rich Red Volcanic Soils a gardeners dream. The property has been established

over the original East Trentham cricket pitch which is still in the chestnut orchard and the 100+ year old

equipment shed, which has many possibilities. With plenty of sheds and dual road access the

possibilities are endless. With imagination and opportunity this is an increditable

If the kids are in tow when checking out thisproperty, expect them to respondenthusiastically because it has ‘fun’ and ‘room

to romp’ written all over it.After a trip down the long, gravelled circular

driveway past tall trees in a park-like setting, theproperty of about 1.6 hectares looks like a leisureresort. An in-ground, solar-heated pool and hottub, skirted by a timber deck, is the first eye-catcher. This is (for the kids at least) followed upwith a timber fort and swathes of grass on twolevels with enough surface area for a footymatch. Paddocks at the side and back are readyfor ponies — or perhaps a mini-bike track.

And an American barn with power and threeroller doors is for serious storage or hobby stuff.

The homestead-style house has crazy-pavedverandahs front and back, a bonus in Aussiesummers and the spot to share a glass of winewhile taking in views of the Mount’s cross.

Entry is directly into a skylit, carpeted lounge-dining room with a wood heater and split-system. The abutting kitchen has slate floor tiles,a two-tiered servery bench, timber cupboards,

walk-in pantry, dishwasher and Smeg under-bench oven and electric cooktop.

Three bedrooms are down carpeted hallways;there’s a separate toilet and the main bathroomhas glossy black wall tiles and a timber vanityunit.

At the end of one of the hallways is the mainbedroom with walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, and a good-sized rumpus room with verandahaccess.

A few minutes from Woodend’s centre, this is aproperty ready to give a family a warm howdy-do.

VEGETATION MANAGEMENT NEAR POWERLINES

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has contracted Tree Top Tower Hire Pty Ltd to manage its Vegetation Maintenance Program. As part of this program the street trees and powerlines are inspected regularly to ensure an uninterrupted power supply and a fi re safe environment. Damage to items such as computers, televisions, video recorders, microwave ovens and other appliances containing electronics can also arise if trees contacting powerlines cause electricity supply interruptions.

All vegetation maintenance work is required to be carried out in compliance with the Electricity Safety Act 2010 - Electric Line Clearance. These regulations stipulate a minimum safe clearance between trees and power-lines, plus a re-growth space, which will allow for re-growth of vegetation between scheduled trims. We have identifi ed trees’ within the Kyneton and Gisborne townships that require trimming to ensure the safe distances are maintained.

The tree works in your area will be carried out over the next three weeks and will be conducted in accordance with the Australian Standard for Pruning of Amenity Trees AS 4373 - 2007

This service will be undertaken only by trained and qualifi ed tree clearing technicians.

REMOVAL OF DEBRIS

Debris from the clearing activity will be removed as soon as possible.

If you have any inquiries regarding the above please contact Peter Jones at the Macedon Ranges Shire Council on 54219800.

Kia SUV is versatile and functionalAlistair Kennedy road tests the latest version of the Sorento

Neat and attractive: The seven-seat Kia Sorento is a practical and affordable people mover crossover.

Kia Sorento is the larger of two SUVs fromthe ambitious Korean importer. Thesmaller Sportage is aimed more at the youth

and small family market while the seven-seatSorento is effectively a crossover people moverwith some off-road ability in the AWD variants.

The latest version of the Sorento was launchedhere in September 2012. Although there wereexternal changes, they didn’t change the overalllook of the vehicle.

In people mover mode the management ofSorento’s interior space is critical and the Kiadesigners have managed to juggle the variouspassenger/luggage permutations nicely. As isinvariably the case with mid-sized seven-seatersthe third row is best left to pre-teen children.

The third row of seats folds flat to provide upto 1047 litres of luggage space with the centreseats in place but drops to 285 litres with all seatsoccupied. The back row seats are split 50/50 toallow some extra seating flexibility. Folding bothrows of rear seats opens the rear up to a van-likecapacity of 2052 litres.

The choice of two- or four-wheel drive israpidly becoming the norm in the latest breed ofSUVs, something that makes lots of sensebecause the majority of buyers neither want norneed drive to all four wheels.

Kia Sorento comes with a choice of twoengines, 3.5-litre V6 petrol and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. Previous criticisms of the Sorento’s rideand handling have been addressed with the use ofultra high-tensile steel contributing to an 18 percent increase in torsional rigidity improving ridecomfort, handling and crash protection.

The seats are comfortable and the ergonomicsfor the driver are very good.

On the road both the petrol and diesel versionsare surprisingly spirited vehicles and hills andrapid overtaking are dispatched with ease.

Kia Sorento is a neat and attractive SUV thatoffers plenty of options for a large family lookingfor a single vehicle that can handle a variety oftasks.

Prices start at $37,490, not including govern-ment or dealer delivery charges.

Hall factor stokes BroadfordBY DANIEL PAPROTH

LONG-suffering Broadford fans will start theseason cheering in full voice as Barry Hall lines upfor his old club against Lancefield on April 7.

Harley Hammond Reserve has been buzzingsince late last year, when Hall, who played hisjunior football for the Kangaroos, signed on thedotted line.

Hall, pictured below, who played for Wangarattalast year, will play at least six Riddell District Foot-ball League matches for Broadford in 2013, balan-cing his commitments with Fox Footy. The sixgames will ensure he can play finals should Broad-ford make it.

The signing is huge for the club, which has strug-gled on the field in recent times, finishing in thebottom four in the past two seasons.

Hall, good mates with senior coach Aaron ‘Skip’Bray, said he was stoked to come back to where itall began.

“I’m very excited,” he said. “It’s good to comeback to the club and give them a little bit backbecause they certainly helped with my career.

“We’ve got a lot of older local players, my mates,

coming back, so we should have a fairly solid side. The good part about it is the players are all local, wehaven’t gone out and spent a heap on players fromMelbourne.”

And while he admits he hasn’t been training thehouse down over pre-season Hall says he’s fit andfiring and hopes to once again slot bags of goals forthe Kangaroos.

“The body is all right,” he said. “To be honest Ihaven’t trained too hard for it but now the season’shere I’ve got a routine going and I’ve been going forruns to keep the belly down a bit. Hopefully thetown gets behind us and we can do something.”

Bray too is excited about the season ahead.“When I put my hand up for the coaching gig Iasked Barry the question one night and he said hewould come give us a hand,” he said.

“It’s brilliant, it was just a question asked over abeer. The town and the club is abuzz.

“We’ve lacked experience on the ground, soobviously with Barry and a few other senior blokescoming back it’s all balancing out pretty well.

“The boys are moving the ball pretty well andthey’ve got a lot of miles in their legs sinceOctober.”
