LETTER FROM THE GOVERNOR

Greetings Sunny CNH!

Hello! My name is Alex D. Nguyen and I have the utmost honor of serving y’all as your 2016-2017 District Governor. Can you believe that it’s been approximately 3 months since we gathered together to celebrate the accomplishments of the 2015-2016 administrative year at the LAX Marriot? It’s crazy how time flies when you’re having fun and I’m even more excited to see what our district will accomplish this upcoming term!

To kick start our year, we hosted Spring Training Conferences North and South, which both had remarkable programs as well as record-breaking attendances. The event definitely could not have been possible without our STC Chairs, Alex Ung & Angelina Chanthanouvong, so be sure to thank them!

Many of our members also had the opportunity to witness an unforgettable experience at CKIx 2016 in Toronto, Canada and I must say we definitely brought the spirit and energy to the convention. Whether it was participating in the Large Scale Service Project, enjoying the poutine, seeing our trustee get retired, or attending workshops, I’m glad to see that our district was able to bond and have so much CNH pride! I’m super excited to see our turnout at CKIx 2017 in San Antonio, TX!

Also congratulations to all the members who were selected to serve on district committees! It’s only been a few months, but the work you put out to help our members and officers is amazing, so keep it up and we are looking forward to everything else that will be produced this upcoming year!

This summer is going to be nothing short of amazing! As we approach the fall, I hope you utilize this time in the summer to prepare your officers and shift your club’s focus onto recruitment and retention, so we can be ready when swarms of new members enter our CNH family!

With that, I also want to give a personal thank you to District Communications & Marketing Chair, Heyun Jeong, and our Newsletter Editor, Emilie Shen, for working diligently to create this amazing issue of the Sunburst! Keep it sunny, CNH!

Yours in Service,

Alex D. Nguyen2016-2017 CNH District Governor

SUMMER SERVICE

“Just because school is out for the summer (for those lucky enough to avoid summer school),doesn’t mean service has to stop! Many clubs across the CNH District are still holding service projects over the summer. This is a great way to hang out with some awesome Circle K’ers & make a difference in your community.

If you are back home or are in a city away from your home club, feel free to reach out to your home club Vice President of Service or Service chair, and they can reach out to a fellow VPS so that you can still be involved in service! Just be sure to send your home club VPS the service project, your service hours, and which club you participated with so that they can keep track of your hours.

HAVE FUN WITH SERVICE THIS SUMMER!”

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK BY ALEXANDRA WEIUC SAN DIEGO

The very first leadership position I took on in UCSD Circle K was through Melody’s Impact Team, Carpe Vitam. For those of you who don’t know, Impact Teams at UCSD Circle K are like short-term committees, led by general members interested in making an impact on the community. Unified by a single cause, the team can work to provide volunteer opportunities by hosting events related to the cause and educating members about the cause. The purpose of this committee was to host a week-long event spreading awareness of and destigmatizing the issue of mental health. I was the Donations Chair, and took charge of contacting people for donations to our events as well as finding a place to collaborate with for our day-long fundraiser. To be honest, I was skeptical of the whole event in the beginning, because none of us (besides Melody) had any experience in the positions we were placed in, and I didn’t even know where to start with my own duties. However, once I started researching and asking for help, I realized that my duties weren’t that daunting after all. It was also exciting seeing how everyone else improved in their own duties, and how the event increasingly became a reality for us as the months/weeks went by. From awkward phone calls, to biking to stores to solicit donations, to taking an uber home for the first time because Trader Joes gave us too many chips, to handing out Dlush flyers to not-so-enthusiastic students, I can say that I have learned a lot from this experience. It was ironically stressful (especially the Dlush fundraiser), but overall my time on this Impact Team has made me grow a lot. So if you’re looking for an introductory leadership opportunity, Impact Teams are definitely the way to go!

Continuous projects keep UC Berkeley Circle K rooted in service that constantly and effectively help our local community. This year we read to children, made crafts with the elderly, gave amazing dinner experiences to the less fortunate, taught children scientific experiments, participated in “give-it-forward” style dinners, and even helped animals socialize and exercise. These projects are what keep us continuously connected to the causes we care about, and they are the small efforts we make every month to make our home

a better place. We were even able to participate in a new continuous project, working at the animal shelter, and not only helped animals in preparation for adoption but also learned about safe animal treatment and care. My personal favorite was talking to a guest I met at Loaves and Fishes about jumbo shrimp, and her family’s experiences as fishers. These small events really make the intimate, personal connections that make service the empowering tool that it is. Thank you for making those small impacts that can have

CARE PACKAGES BY NICK STRINGFELLOWUC LOS ANGELES

On Sunday, May 15th, several other Circle K members and I went to the Sinai Temple on Wilshire Street to help assemble care packages for kids in local hospitals! Honestly, I didn’t really know what to expect from this event when I signed up for it other than simply assembling care packages. Considering we almost got lost while trying to find the entrance to the temple, I knew that the project would be an interesting experience.

I had a lot of fun at this service project, working with a lot of people from all over the area to assemble hundreds of bags of toys and gifts for kids. The event itself was part of a bigger group of events called “Big Sunday”, which combines efforts of local organizations and corporate sponsors to collect donated toys and send them to kids admitted to hospitals around Los Angeles. But why packages of toys you might ask? The bags we made were custom-filled by age group and gender with the purpose of keeping the kids happy as well as hopeful during their time seeking treatment. Even though the gifts might be small, the smiles of the children are always completely worth it. It felt really good knowing that all the work we were doing would have such a huge benefit. The next time we have an event like this, I’ll definitely make sure to go (hopefully with all of you)! I’m so happy I got to share this experience with my fellow members; it was wonderful to have kickstarted my Sunday with some service.

SPRING TRAININGCONFERENCE

By Calvin Ly, UCLA

As a budding board member lost in the new term, I greatly needed direction and inspiration. Luckily, Spring Training Conference South was right around the corner. This past Saturday, May 7th at Cal State Fullerton, members of Circle K from across Southern California-Nevada-Hawaii came to STC South to better themselves as board members, general members, and people.

There were so many different workshops at STC. As per usual to most other training conferences, there were workshops focused on board member positions: such as ones for presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, treasurers, etc. However, there were many that were geared towards all members, such as “How to Stay Positive” and “How to Breathe.” I personally went to the E-Board and Secretary workshops, “How to Stay Positive”, “MD&E”, and the service project. The former two workshops contained information that I know will be conducive towards success as Club Secretary. I learned the importance of being on E-Board and skills on how to stay afloat in my position throughout the term. The MD&E workshop taught me the importance of outreach and establishment

of bonds with members. The “Service Project”, where we were able to sew blankets and make scarves, was really incredible. Unfortunately, my service project period lacked materials from the beginning and we were not able to make as many scarves as we could have. Ultimately, “How to Stay Positive” was my favorite workshop because as CKI Members and even as college students, it is not only important to be physically healthy, but to be mentally and emotionally healthy as well. To do so, you really need to see the bright side of things and learn from your experiences.

Beyond that, Metro division had its monthly DCM, where we were caught up to date with the news of each of the Metro clubs along with some general division announcements Shoutout to the home club, UCLA, for winning Club of the month for fellowship. Otherwise, STC was nearly perfect. I’d highly recommend any member to go, board or not. Not only will it help you survive the inherent challenges that comes with being an officer or general member in CKI, it will also help you take steps in addressing the broader challenges of everyday life.

Along with working on the district publications—the Sunburst, SunnyTV, and Biweekly digest—the Communications & Marketing committee has been working on public relations resources for clubs, such as the Graphic Request Form, Press Release Request Form, and Biweekly office hours. Stay up to date with CNH by subscribing to the biweekly district mailing and following the district on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat).

Finally chose our top 3 themes! Now all we need to do is wait for the July District Board meeting to be set on our top theme and finally get things planned and ordered.

The FTC committee is hard at work planning this year's Fall Training Conference! Mark your calendars for November 4th-6th in Sonora, California!

The Finance & Fundraising Committee has been actively planning the details regarding Crazy Kompetition for Infants. Among other projects—which include a DFI webinar and a Fundraising Database—we are actively working on resources for Treasurers & Fundraising Chairs to use to enhance and contribute to the successes of their term.

In the past few months, the Kiwanis Family & Foundation Committee has been ensuring that the District has thorough understanding of the other Kiwanis Family Branches by hosting webinars, creating resources, and meeting with the individual Kiwanis Family Chairs. In August, the committee will be hosting District Professional Development Conference and Key to College at Kiwanis DCON. See you all there!

For the Membership Development & Education Committee, we have been working to reach out to the club membership chairs in the District. Besides that we have been preparing for President's Retreat! Other than that, we are getting ready for the Fall Semester/Quarter to begin! Woot!

This term, the committee aims to help you with anything and everything related to awards, the Membership Recognition Program, the Master Records Sheet, and special recognition within your home club or division. We are here if you ever have any questions or concerns, so please feel free to contact us anytime. We hope you RECOGNIZE that we have so much love and appreciation in store for you this year!

This year's service committee has been working on some new and exciting projects for this term! We are working on a new DSI Video Series, a new and updated service resource database, and much more. Look out for this year's District Professional Development Conference if you would like to get involved in some tabletop service over the summer!

FELLOWSHIP

On May 13, the Circle K club in California State University, Northridge held its annual end of the year banquet. There were awards and recognition, food, talent, and intense biddings from 5-8pm! Members from across the Metro Division (including the former and current Lieutenant Governors and one hailing from the Foothill Division) joined us for our last event with our then-Seniors, who would later graduate during the 20th-23rd of that same month. Toward the end, a fierce bidding war occurred for the bid-on’s services. While yours truly won a bid for President Isaac Miller to hang out with him, he tragically lost the war for Emily Munoz and her offer to a ticket to Disneyland. After the banquet, a hand full of the guests went down Reseda Blvd. to the ice cream parlor, Wanderlust, for the CSUN CKI fundraiser. Overall, for a first-timer, I enjoyed being in the end of the year banquet, even if it meant being there for the Seniors for the last time. As we bid them luck in their life after graduation, our bonds will always burn like the Sun we C!

On Friday June 24th, the very first Foothill Fun Friday was held at Griffith Park, hosted by Los Angeles City College. FFF is a brand new event founded by Lieutenant Governor Jesus Martinez. It is a divisional social event in which each Foothill club takes turns hosting. LACC had decided for their FFF to be a muggle quidditch game.

The turnout for the event was relatively small, there being only 16 attendees. Despite this, the event was a success. Everyone had fun playing the fictional sport. Watermelon and water was also available to consume on the warm summer's day. For most, it was their first time playing muggle quidditch. The game, which originates from Harry Potter, is rather simple. It contains elements similar to other sports such as soccer and dodgeball. Two teams of seven try to score into each other's goals, and catching the snitch will end the game. The two teams were led respectively by the CSULA and LACC presidents. The teams were called the “White Power Rangers” and the “Pink Power Rangers”. Both teams played with full effort and enthusiasm but the White Power Rangers won all three games, sweeping the tournament.

The Magic Kingdom Banquet on May 21, 2016 at the Clarion Hotel truly was an unforgettable night. I personally wasn’t planning on attending because I wanted to dye my hair that day but our Immediate Past LTG Alex Nguyen convinced me to go to banquet because “memories are a chance of a lifetime.” I didn’t get to dye my hair that weekend but Alex was right. I was able to meet new friends and reunite with the old. We had a great time watching several talent acts (one was the roasting of Alex), eating unlimited pasta and cake, and receiving awards. My school, Chapman University, had the privilege of obtaining the Outstanding Club of the Year award. Our members of CUCKI nearly crumbled in tears (get it?). We were extremely grateful that our hard work throughout this term was recognized. Our President Rochelle Salvador nearly cried as she walked up to receive the award; we all stood and clapped as she walked back (she also received Outstanding President of the Year earlier that evening). Following the awards, we listened to Alex’s speech and witnessed him crying. Many of the attendees also followed suit. With that being said, I wish Alex the best of luck as CNH District Governor for the 2016-2017 term and I can’t wait for the next CKI event.

Over the weekend of April 15-17, UCBCKI, Berkeley Kiwanis, and some members of Golden Gate, went to Cazadero Performing Arts in order to work on the camp in preparation for its opening in the summer to students and families. That was my first time ever going to Cazadero so I was extra worried of how things would turn out. A lot of doubt came up if I had done enough to ensure the smooth sailing of this event, like if I made clear enough directions to the camp, or if I brought enough people to get all our work done.

Happily, despite being short 4 people of 30, the event was a huge success thanks to all the hard work of the people who attended. We cleaned hundreds of mattresses and transported them and heavy bed frames all over the camp to the many cabins, put

canopies over 25 cabins, put signs up, built decks and tent frames, picked up debris, swept, tiled, and dismantled and emptied a littered tool shed. As cliché

as it sounds, it just amazes me how much work we can get done when we all work

together since we completed all our tasks and more.

Overall, this was a really great event. I’m grateful for having the opportunity to get to know the Kiwanians and the members of Circle K better. I

hope all of you who attended left with great memories, I know

I did. For those who haven’t gone to Caz, I highly recommend it, I cried

bittersweet tears when it was over. Lastly, I want to thank everyone who came

to Caz one more time for I couldn’t have done this without you all.

On Saturday, April 2nd, members of UCLA Circle K went to the 4th annual Heart of the City 5K Run/Walk fundraiser at the California Hospital Medical Center in downtown LA. Our members were given two shifts to choose from: the earlier shift started at 5:15 a.m., and the later one began at 6:15 a.m. Seven members showed up for the second shift. We met up at De Neve turnaround and drove about half an hour to get there. By the time we arrived, streets were already blocked off, and some participants had already checked in.

This race is a pledge-based fundraiser, allowing participants to raise additional support from their families and colleagues in order to raise funds for and bring attention to the health programs at the hospital. The event was very well-organized, with free t-shirts, goodie bags, and drinks offered to every participant. Dogs were welcome to join the race as well, and there was a dog adoption organization sponsoring the event on scene.

Kiwanis One Day was the first Circle K event that I went to. It was also my first interclub event and the first time I met our regional Kiwanis. Among the other Kiwanis Family clubs present were the Key Clubs of Granada Hills Charter High School, Monroe High School, and Cleveland High School, as well as the Northridge Kiwanis. We helped Northridge Kiwanis organize their shed. Before we started, the shed was incredibly clustered and difficult to move around in. You could say it was an extreme fire hazard to be in there. By the time we finished, there were clear paths to the back of the shed and everything was neatly labeled and organized. After we finished, the Kiwanis treated us to a pizza party at Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, in which we were able to bond after all the hard work we put in. I look forward to working with our Kiwanis and other members of the Kiwanis family as the term goes on.

After checking in at the volunteers’ station, we met some fellow Circle K members from USC. Everybody introduced oneself to each other and then quickly started looking for assignments.

This event was not short on volunteers; sponsors also seemed to have brought enough

of their own people. Our members were first given pom-poms and were told to cheer on the participants during the race, but later, some of us were assigned to help out at the t-shirt booth, while the others worked a food booth. We helped hand out t-shirts and other souvenirs to the race participants, move equipment, and prepare and give out utensils. Starting about thirty minutes after the race started, more and more participants were finishing the run and coming back to the booths, so we were pretty busy for about three hours. The food station we worked at also helped raise a lot of money for the event.

It was really nice to be there—meeting new people, feeling all that energy, and helping to build something good. We really enjoyed it and hope more people will join next year’s event.

GOINGINTERNATIONAL

Hello Sunny CNH!

My name is Jenny Park and I was privileged to serve as your International Trustee and LSSP Chair for the 2015-2016 CKI term. This past year I was fortunate enough to be able to travel to 6 different districts and visit over 70 CKI clubs, and one thing I can say confidently is that CNH has a passion that cannot be replicated. Did you know that our district has over 3,000 members making up almost a quarter the CKI membership worldwide? I for one am incredibly proud to be from such an exuberant and energetic community and cannot wait to see what new heights you all will bring in the upcoming year!

These last four years in our beloved organization are some the best years I ever experienced, so I sincerely hope that you enjoy your time in Circle K to the fullest. Whether it’s serving it up with your home club or trekking across the country to meet members in other CKI district, always remember to follow your passion and always remember that you are a quintessential piece of the world’s largest student-led collegiate service organization. Thank you all for the unforgettable journey and I hope you will all consider applying for International Committees or attending International Convention in San Antonio next July.

FROM YOUR2015-2016 TRUSTEE

If we have not yet had the pleasure of meeting, my name is Jennifer Que, and I hail from our beloved California-Nevada-Hawai`i District as a Circle K International at Orange Coast College alumna and a current Health Science major at Circle K International at California State University, Fullerton.

Did you know that, similar to how our district is divided into divisions, CKI is also regionally sectioned? Bring on Subregion B, home to the mighty Rocky Mountain District (RMD), the wild Southwest (SW) District and of course, the Sunny CNH District. For the 2016-2017 term, I am humbled to have the opportunity in following the footsteps of an exceptional group of leaders known as the Subregion B Trustees. Putting it simply, this elected position is dedicated to developing and strengthening the sister districts that reside in a CKI subregion.

So what's going to happen this year? My challenge for you is to focus on the I in International, expanding beyond the boundaries of the CNH District. Make friends outside of CNH, spread the knowledge that our district has taught us and extend it to International. Be active on the International level in order to make the changes that you want to see in our organization. Collaborate with our sister districts because we have so much to teach and so much to learn to improve our district year after year.

The CNH District has provided me with so much, and I'm ecstatic for the chance to give back to our district, to serve you as well as our sister districts, and to see what we can all accomplish together this year for Subregion B.

Love,

Jennifer Que2016-2017 Subregion B International Trustee

At first, I honestly did not want to attend CKIx – solely because no one else in my home club was going. I thought I would be lonely all week long, but little did I know, how wrong I was. Throughout CKIx, I got to bond with people from all over our Cal-Nev-Ha District and around the world.

Being a part of CKIx gave me so many leadership opportunities that I never expected I could done. As the Up with People Ambassador for the International Service Committee, I had the honor of speaking at the service fair. Standing up there in front of 100+ people, I surprisingly didn't feel like a nervous wreck. It was an amazing feeling being able to talk confidently about one of CKI’s partnerships that I had worked with all year long. It was also super fun meeting my international committee in-person, beyond the tiny laptop screen.

I also got to participate in the Amazing Service Project workshop where we had five hours to implement and execute a service event with a budget of $200 CAD, approximately $150 USD. Our team came up with the idea of having a service event that raised safe sex practices awareness in the community in conjunction with Pride. To do this, we wanted to make care-packages/baggies filled with pamphlets about safe sex practices and contraceptives to be distributed in the community. During our five hours, my team called clinics to ask for free condoms and awareness pamphlets, called the Pride representatives to ask if we needed a permit, labeled our baggies with the CKI logo, ran around town getting supplies, handed out the bags

and talked to people about safe sex practices, and finally presented our service project during the Meaningful Service workshop. It was a fun and impactful workshop that I highly recommend because it definitely showed that you can accomplish a lot for your community in just a few hours!

I was also honored to be one of the PATH leaders for the Large Scale Service Project portion of CKIx. My team was the Deck of Wonderland PATH and it was so awesome being able to lead a group of individuals. We also ended up winning 3rd place for Fellowship games, which made me so proud as team leader. My favorite memory with my group was sightseeing at the harbor together and taking a million selfies during our walk! Working together with the rest of the PATH leader/LSSP committee was definitely a lot of work but I truly feel that every second was WORTH it.

Throughout the week, I experienced so many new things that opened up my eyes to different perspectives that only going to an International Convention can give you. For example, attending House of Delegates to vote on the international board and discuss amendments was one of the most intense experiences you could ever be in. Talking to people from other districts also showed a very different view of things that you would never expect, allowing you to see the structures of different CKI clubs beyond your own district.

Winning 1st place for Gold Division for Outstanding Single Service was definitely a moment I'll never forget. When they called my school's name, I started sobbing on stage (which was pretty embarrassing). No, an award DOES NOT define your hard work nor does it define you, but it made me remember the support I had and the impact I had helped make. So now, when I think back to my single service event, I no longer feel like curling in a ball and crying about how much better it could have been. Instead, I finally have the courage to feel proud of my event and myself and take all the criticism I had received to improve in the future.

Ultimately, the best part of CKIx was bonding with the members in my district. From facing my fear of heights at the CN Tower with CSU Sacramento friends, to bonding at the Subregion B dinners, to talking about our experience during reflections, to late night dessert adventures, and many more, I can truly say that CNH is not just a district, but a family who sticks together through it all.
