Message from Administration

Welcome/Bienvenue to all of our new families and to all of our returning families! We are honoured and excited to work with your children each day.

Staff

We have 6 new staff members joining our Sun Valley team this year. Please join us in welcoming: Mme Heather Desrochers- Grade 2 French Immersion, Mme Chérie Brakel- Grade 3 French Immersion (.5), Mme Nadine Lemoine- Grade 3 French Immersion, M. Kyle Donnelly- Grade 4 French Immersion, Ms. Patricia Barker-Student Services Teacher and Ms. Cathy Porter - Early Numeracy Facilitator. In addition, welcome back Mme Dufault- Music Teacher. They come to Sun Valley with a wealth of knowledge, experience and enthusiasm. They are fantastic additions to our school.

Students

Sun Valley presently has 489 students. This year, Sun Valley School has experienced an increase in enrolment compared to last year. It was great to meet so many of you on the Sun Valley Open House on September 12th. Our students have had a great start to the school year. They have been demonstrating the Essential 3 (Greeting, Manners and Winning and Losing with Grace) at various times throughout the school day. Our hope is that our students will demonstrate the Essential 3 at home too.

Behaviour Expectations

Sun Valley has developed a school-wide matrix that all students are expected to follow: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe. Posters of our matrices can be found in the school entrance and on the walls in various hallways, as well as on our Sun Valley School website. Please talk with your children about ways they can demonstrate these expectations in class, gym, music, library, in halls, outside during recess, in line and during lunch.

Visitors

In order to keep Sun Valley safe for children, we need to monitor people entering and exiting the school. If you are dropping your child off in the morning, please drop them off at the doors that they are supposed to enter. Your child will proceed into the building with his/her class. If you need to come into the school during school hours, please go to the office. In order to not interrupt teaching and learning, your child will be called to the office by the secretary. If your child is leaving early or returning to school from an appointment, please complete the Student Sign In/Out book. If you need to speak to a teacher regarding your child, please arrange a meeting by contacting the teacher or office prior to the meeting.

Families are welcome to use the Stop and Go area to drop off students. Please do not park in this area.

Parent Advisory Council

Thank you to our active and positive Sun Valley Parent Advisory Council. Our PAC has been very supportive in helping us reach our goals in working with your children. We hope to see you at one of the upcoming meetings. Meeting dates are posted on our website.

We look forward to working with you and your child/children and creating an exciting year of learning. Please feel free to contact Sun Valley School Principal, Mario Beauchamp or Sun Valley School Vice Principal, Bailey McIntyre with any questions or feedback.

Sun Valley School’s Essential 3 We are very excited to share an initiative that will continue from last year. At Sun Valley School, we will be teaching our students and expecting them to apply their knowledge of the Essential 3. What is the Essential 3? These are skills that educators and parents want all children to demonstrate at school and at home.

Essential #1- Greetings

1. Smile and have eye contact. When someone is speaking, keep your eyes on the person at all times.2. If someone makes a comment, you should turn and face the person.3. Say good morning, good afternoon or good evening. If you are in line with the class, the no-talking

rule is in effect.4. Shake hands when meeting someone for the first time.

Essential #2- Manners

1. Say please and thank you at all times when given something. Always show appreciation.2. When you bump into someone accidently or cough/sneeze/burp, say excuse me.3. If you are first in line, open the door.4. Do not ask for a reward for good behavior. If you receive one, it is not expected.

Essential #3- Winning and Losing with Grace

1. If you win, do not brag.2. If you lose, do not demonstrate anger.3. Show good sportsmanship by greeting opponents and saying positive comments, like, "Good game."

Sun Valley School Zones of Regulation

Sun Valley School will be teaching the Zones of Regulation to all students this year. We are excited to use this approach to help students identify their own emotions and to help them find strategies to be calm, focused and ready to learn. The Zones of Regulation (Zones) program uses the four colours – blue, green, yellow and red, to help students recognize what zone they may be in. When in the Green Zone it means that one is calm, focused and ready to learn. Blue would describe when feeling fatigued, sick, bored or tired. The Yellow Zone relates to being anxious, nervous or silly. When in the Red Zone there are feelings of anger, being terrified or simply out of control. Our students are presently being introduced to the various zones in classroom lessons. They are learning the vocabulary of feelings, and how to identify the emotions within themselves. Finally, there will be lessons on what students can do to help themselves be regulated and calm, being at their best to learn, make good choices, and to interact positively with their peers. Look to our upcoming newsletters for more information on the Zones of Regulation at Sun Valley!

SVS Breakfast for Learning Program

Our school has been running the Breakfast for Learning Program since 2015. The goal of this program is to ensure all students have access to healthy food to help them learn. The program is open to all students. The program provides a nourishing breakfast offered during first recess (10:15-10:30 a.m.) in room 21.

We provide a nutritious and tasty breakfast, along with the opportunity for students to form positive connections with their peers, teaching staff, and the community.

The Breakfast for Learning program is successful due to the support of the school, staff, volunteers (parents, grandparents, community members), fundraisers and community donations. Many years, we have also been supported by a Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba grant. For more information on breakfast programs, visit: http://childnutritioncouncil.com/

Are you interested in volunteering? We are always open to having more volunteers to help us out.

What does a Breakfast for Learning volunteer do?

- Prepare, serve and clean up (typically 9:30-11:30 a.m.)

- Prepare take away (grab & go) breakfasts

- Grocery shopping duties

- Food donation pick up

- Offer a smile along with a tasty breakfast

When are the volunteers needed?

We are currently scheduling the days we can serve breakfast based on when we have volunteers available, so there is flexibility. We prepare and offer “Take Away” breakfasts, which are handed out by our staff volunteers when we do not have volunteers available. If you are available once a week, twice a week, once a month, anything… we will find a job for you! Please don’t hesitate to contact me to ask about the options and see what may work!

If you are interested, or know someone that is, please email Michelle at [email protected] or phone at 204-471-1135.

Sun Valley PAC News Welcome back to returning families and a big hello to all our new students and their parents!

The Sun Valley Parent Advisory Council held our first meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 18th and were pleased to see so many new and eager faces!

We normally meet the 3rd Wednesday of each month, at 6pm in the Learning Commons and we welcome all parents to join us. You are not required to be a voting member to attend – any level of participation is welcome. Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday October 16th and anyone is welcome to put their name forward for an elected position.

Earlier this month, your child should have brought home a form with information on how to be added to our volunteer email list. There are so many different types of opportunities for parents to get involved at Sun Valley School and we encourage you to add your name to the list. Approximately once per month you will receive an email, it will list all the upcoming opportunities. If nothing interests you, delete the email and move on. If you see something you would like to participate in – let us know! A Child Abuse Registry Check is required if your volunteer opportunity involves working directly with the students. There is no cost to fill one out, please inquire at the school office. Our Breakfast for Learning, Hot Lunch, Fundraising and Community Events committees are always welcoming new members!

Our Fall Fundraising Campaign has been underway for the last few weeks and we would like to thank all families for participating. If you prefer to “opt out” of fundraising for the entire school year, simply fill out the “opt out” form and attach it to a cheque (recommended amount of $100.00). The school division will send you a tax receipt and you don’t have to fundraise – it’s a win for everyone! 10% Funds raised this year will go towards future PAC projects such as our Halloween Dance, Fun Fair and Staff Appreciation. The school gets 50% of the proceeds for their requested items and the final 40% goes to Phase 2 of our Playground Enhancement Project.

For the first time ever, our PAC will be purchasing a membership to “Canadian Parents for French” – an organization that will provide our students and teachers with a variety of new resources and opportunities. Lori Campbell will be acting as our liaison and will be working to share all these new opportunities with Sun Valley families. Watch for more information in upcoming newsletters!

Reminders for meetings, fundraising and hot lunch deadlines as well as childcare advertising and other community information can be found on the Facebook Page -Sun Valley Area- Parents Helping Parents. This is not a school page but run by volunteer moderators to give parents a place to connect and get the information they may need!

We are looking forward to an exciting year and all the new opportunities we can provide for our students and teachers! As always, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions!

Sun Valley School Active Living Update

Welcome back! There is something so exciting about the start of a new school year! We are so excited to share our passion for games and activity with new and old students alike! There will be so much going on in the gym this year, we can't wait to get going!

Gym classes September involved safety and class procedures and low organized games. We kicked off the year by having fun and being safe! We are fortunate to have two gyms at Sun Valley School and they are occupied with classes almost all day, every day.

Terry Fox Walk Our Terry Fox walk will take place on October 18th! The entire school will participate in a brief assembly followed by a walk around the Sun Valley community. Every student is encouraged to bring in a loonie or a toonie to support this great cause!

Cross county Run club was a huge success. We had over 80 students from grade 3-5 who ran every second day with 6 teachers accompanying them. We went to the divisional run at Birds Hill on Tuesday, September 24th.

Flag football Flag football will begin at the end of September in preparation for the tournament that Sun Valley will be attending in October. This club is for grade 5 students and will run on odd days of the cycle at 12:10 p.m.

Run-a-thon The Run-a-Thon fundraiser is coming up shortly which involves all the students running laps for pledges over two days in the large gym.

Leadership We have a great group of grade 5 leaders who are prepared to take on any task and want to work together to make Sun Valley School and our community a better place! This group will be very busy this year with all sorts of projects. Already this year, students have assisted with teaching younger students about the “Sun Valley Essential 3” at our welcome back assembly and are out on the playground helping younger students learn new games to play at recess!

If you have any questions for Mme Tease or Mr. Rubenfeld, please feel free to call the school and speak to either one of them.

Keep Active!

Sun Valley Learning Commons News

What’s New in the LC?

Q. Why did the computer go to the doctor?A. Because it had a Blutooth

Welcome to the Library/Learning Commons! This space is always buzzing...and we wouldn’t have it any other way! Here’s a snapshot of some of the things that you’ll find in our space:

On any given day you will find students actively sharing the LC as a space for checking out books with Ms. Denise, our Resource Technician. She is an expert in our 16,000+ item collection! Both Ms. Denise and Mrs. Paul can help your reader find good fit books. We have Books on CD, Big Books, Graphic Novels (in English and in French), eBooks, magazines, videos and Reference materials. We even lend board games to classrooms! Here are some helpful tips so we can have all library books returned on time (we explain to our students that they exchange their old books for new ones):

• Make a note of library days on the family calendar or add a reminder to the calendar on your devices and in your child’s agenda in the parent section

• Keep library books in a special place on the day that they come home and that’s where they ‘live’ until they return to school to be exchanged (ex. A bag on the bedroom outer doorknob or a highly visible shelf)

• If you have a reader who likes to travel with library books to keep them company, use a special bag just for that purpose

We are the hub for technology! Students converge in the LC to access iPads, student cameras, tripods, laptops and access the computer lab. Here you will also find the Makerspace Spheros, Cues, 3D Doodler, Little Bits, Makey Makey, MicroBits, Merge Cubes and VR goggles.

We are home to many clubs, like MYRCA (a reading club for grades 4 and 5, beginning in October, admission by signed parental permission form ONLY), Chess, Boardgames, Coding and Makerspace.

We are also a place to get into the “Green Zone”. We welcome happy chatter, but you can always find pockets in the LC where you can be peaceful and calm. The LEGO wall invites solitary or group play. We have coloring books, lap boards and cushions so you can sit anywhere and work in a comfortable space.

Oh, the Puppets! And the Book Buddies! Never underestimate the power of a cozy someone to curl up with when reading or listening to reading. (If you have Beanie Babies that you’d like to re-home, we are happy to add them to our collection of Book Buddies. And if you have books, © 2010 or later, that you’d like to send our way, we’ll be happy to add them to our collection, or pass them along to a classroom.)

Sun Valley Learning Commons News

Q. How does the ocean say hello? A. It waves!

Face to Face is our Volunteer drop-in reading program. It is fluid, dependent upon YOU, the volunteer and YOUR schedule. Teachers provide a list of 4-6 students in their classrooms who would benefit from 1:1 reading TO an adult, in English or in French (volunteers do not have to be bilingual to participate). When the volunteer arrives, the student comes to the classroom door with their current reading material, so it is best suited to them. The volunteer will coach/ listen to the student read for 10-15 minutes in common areas such as: the hall outside the classroom door, in the Library/ Learning Commons, the benches by the entrance, outside the Office, or in the Breakfast for Learning room. If it is not a good time for a F2F volunteer, teachers may simply decline, and the volunteer moves to the next class who needs service. How do we know that a program like this works? We have the demonstrated increased reading levels of our students to prove it! Perhaps you know someone who has an hour (or maybe more) each week to spare and would like to volunteer at Sun Valley for Face to Face? Maybe a retired person or a relative who works from home? Bring 2 pieces of identification to the SV office and we can get the Criminal Record check underway, free of charge, to make you a volunteer. We will arrange short welcome meetings with our Principal, Mr. Beauchamp and you will get some great how-to reading tips from our Reading Specialist, Mrs. Zylstra. Still have more questions? Call the Office and leave a message for Mrs. Paul or email [email protected]. Most of all, you will be making a huge difference as you help our students decode and unlock the wonder of reading!

Q. What are the strongest days of the week? A. Saturday and Sunday. Every other day is a weekday.

Tabs for Wheelchairs, run by Mrs. Paul’s former teaching partner, Mrs. Gwen Buccini, for over 20 years is still going strong at SV. Tabs are collected in a large blue bin behind our grade 1 and 2 hallway door. Send your beverage tabs (tabs only, no lids attached please) anytime with your student and they can add them to the bin! Used Markers and battery recycling can still be found here. In front of the office Mme Fouillard’s class have expanded that to include crayon and cellphone (SIM card removed) recycling, as well.

Sun Valley Music News What’s Happening in Ms. Zippy’s Music Room…

Hello families! It has been a fantastic and musical start to the school year. The English program students and Ms. Zippy have already been busy making, creating, and exploring music in room 16. Here is what each class is up to…

The Kindergarteners have been exploring their four different voices with help from some puppet friends. Speaking voice with Fred the Cat, whisper voice with Bunny, shouting voice with Tim the T-Rex, and singing voice with Owl.

In Grade 1/2 we are composing with ta, titi, and rests to add to the song “Dear Little Kitty Cat”. We discussed all the things you need to do to take care of a cat!

In Grade 2/3 we are being “rhythm detectives” to find out the rhythm of the song “Bow Wow Wow”. We discovered that the song uses ta’s, titi’s, and rests.

In Grade 3 we are playing the circle game “Pass the Beanbag”. We have to keep a steady beat when passing a beanbag, and whoever has the beanbag at the end of the song gets a turn to play the crash cymbals at the end of the song!

The Grade 4 and 5 classes have turned the music room into a peaceful Hawaiian oasis…with ukuleles! We are so lucky to have been gifted a class set of ukuleles for our music program. We have been hard at work learning how to strum and make chords on our awesome blue and orange ukuleles!

NOTEworthy News from Mme Dufault’s Music Room

The Hello! I am elated to be returning to Sun Valley in my new role as the full-time Music Specialist. We try new things and are willing to explore, be creative and take risks—all while having fun, of course!

We have been busy in the large music room so far this year! Here is a quick snapshot of what we have been up to:

Kindergarten- instrument zoos (meeting some of the instruments in the music room), moving to the drum, creative movement, learning the difference between silence and sound and exploring our singing voices

Grade 1s- moving to the drum, singing, dancing, echos with rhythm sticks, creative movement

Grade 2s- playing the barred instruments, singing, creative movement

Grade 3s- playing on the bucket drums, rhythm reviews, rhythm compositions

Grade 4s and 5s- playing on the bucket drums, rhythm reviews, rhythm compositions, getting ready for recorders

Many of you are already asking about our holiday concerts! The schedule for the holiday concerts is not quite ready to distribute yet, but it should be coming your way by the end of October. The confirmed dates for our concerts this year are: Tuesday, December 17; Wednesday, December 18; Thursday, December 19.

Also, Mme Dufault is looking for some faux (fake) plants to liven up her music room. Due to allergies and sensitivities only plants that are from scent and smoke free homes can be accepted. Please contact Mme Dufault at [email protected] if you have any donations ready to “leaf” your house!

Stay tuned for more updates as the year continues!

WSO and RETSD in Concert

This year, the Grade 5 students at Sun Valley also have a chance to sing as a part of a River East Transcona divisional choir in conjunction with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on October 29, 2019. They will be singing three songs in this divisional choir, accompanied by the WSO.

This club has been made available to all grade 5 students, however we are only able to select 11 students to represent our school. We were so fortunate to have over 30 students audition that we had to do a random draw to pick our participants.

Congratulations to:

Ms. Ziprick Kindergarten Class

In our Kindergarten room we have adopted a tree on the playground to explore and observe throughout the four seasons! We brainstormed different names for our tree including Chocolate, Bunny, Daisy, Cat, Elf, Vicky, and Fiona. We held a class vote and decided to name our tree…Fiona! We can’t wait to go and visit Fiona to see how she changes each season.

Mme Gossen/Mme Brakel’s Class

Sun Valley will again be participating in “Bag up Manitoba” this year. Bag Up Manitoba is a learning opportunity to tackle issues around plastic bag over-use and waste and is sponsored by Take Pride Manitoba. The grade 3 students will be collecting and counting plastic bags during the month of October. If you have a collection of plastic bags which you would like to keep out of the landfill, send them to school during the month of October. We will send them off to be turned into frisbees and planters and benches.

If you have a child in grade 3 who would like to help with this project, remind them to listen to the morning announcements. We will have “bag counting club” at lunch most day 4s in October. Grade 3s are also invited to participate in a composting club on day 6s at lunch. The members of this club will help with our vermicompost.

Mme Beth’s Kindergarten Class

At one of their first play centres of the year, Mme Beth’s Kindergarten students have been busy creating faces out of loose parts. So far, they have made their own faces, monster faces, silly faces, and “Dad” faces (complete with fancy moustaches).

Sun Valley Safety Patrols This year’s group of school safety patrols have been a very diligent, professional and dedicated group! Both the Sunny and Soleil street patrol squads have completed a full rotation and are already proving that they are leaders and role models who put road safety first. The Squad Captains and Lieutenants have been committed to ensuring every post is covered and are keeping accurate records of how well each member performs their duties. The kindergarten patrols have played a vital part in ensuring our younger students are greeted as they come to learn, and that they stay out of the danger zones around the buses. Last but not least, our bus patrols have been helping the bus drivers ensure that all passengers are safe as they come to and from school.

Here are a few valuable reminders for our school’s street patrols:

• Be on time! Post times at Sun Valley are: o 8:35-8:50 o 11:40-11:50 o 12:30-12:40 o 3:25-3:40

• Patrols need to get ready 5 minutes before their post time. • Stand one step back from the curb. • Watch for a safe gap in traffic and wait for traffic to stop completely before crossing. • Always face traffic when crossing students. • When a driver stops you need to make eye contact with them to ensure that the

driver is actually stopping and not just slowing down. • Remember to stand straight in the “ease” position with your arms to your back when

not crossing students. • When in the “holding” position, you must stand with your arms stretched out to the

sides and slightly down to prevent small children from running by. • Go to your post and leave in an orderly manner.

News from the Office…

Reminders:

Please contact the school at 204-663-7664 to report any absences. For your convenience the answering machine is available to leave a message after hours and on the weekends.

Please note that there is no supervision for students provided before 8:40 AM or at the end of the school day after 3:25 PM, (with the exception of our bus students while they wait).

Parents are reminded to check in at the office when picking up their child early from school. At the end of the day, parents are asked to wait at the front door entrance and not at the classroom doors.

Illness & Going Outside at Recess

From time to time children are sent to school with bad colds, the flu, or other contagious conditions. This puts other children in their class/school at risk. Please do not send a sick child to school with instructions for the teacher to keep them in at recess. Teachers are on recess duty and are not available for indoor supervision of sick children. If your child is too sick to go out for recess; it is best they are kept home. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.
