FALL/WINTER 2012 BOSSELMAN COMPANIES In September, AmBest honored the late Chuck Bosselman with a Lifetime Achievement Award. AmBest President Steve Allen made the following comments during the presentation: First, I would like to say thank you to Jan, Brandi, Charlie, Laurie, Dustin and Katie for traveling here to receive this award on behalf of Chuck. My first conversation with Jan after the celebration of Chuck’s life was just a few weeks afterwards. I closed by asking if there was anything Carol and I could do for her. Without hesitation she said “Just make sure he isn’t forgotten.” From that simple request, this award was born. I am proud and humbled to be a part of this ceremony. He richly deserved the esteem that this high honor represents. To properly acknowledge Chuck’s contribution to this organization, we have to go back to the beginning. Yes it’s true. The name and logo for AMBEST was born on the back of a napkin in BT’s Bar in Grand Island, Nebraska. Later, the concept of a driver rewards program which came to be known as AMBUCK$ had its origins there as well. Chuck served with distinction on the AMBEST Board for several years and as its Chairman. He was instrumental in many of the programs and initiatives that AMBEST and the industry benefit from even to this day. If asked one word to describe Chuck, it would be Inspirational. John Quincy Adams said: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” That was Chuck. If Chuck were here, at about this point he would say, “Just spit it out Allen, it takes too long for you southern boys to say what you mean.” Chuck was a good and true friend to me and so many others. From the moment I met him 23 years ago, I felt like I had always known him. He had that amazing gift. Although relatively small in stature, he could take over a room. He shunned the microphone but commanded the attention of everyone with that distinctive warm voice when he would grab the hand of someone at a meeting and say, “Hi, I’m Chuck Bosselman from Grand Island, Nebraska.” And then, he would want to know everything about you and what you do. Business. We are here tonight to honor Chuck for his contribution to AMBEST and the industry. Chuck’s business acumen is legendary and well documented. Indeed our entire industry is in his debt. We would be here for a very long time if I attempted to list his business and community accomplishments. Metaphorically, I would like to leave you with a mental picture of Chuck that everyone can identify with. Chuck was the Grand Canyon, a national monument to his industry. He was bigger than life. He was long in vision, deep in character and thought, wide in his sphere of influence. He was so colorful. The man from Grand Island who never forgot who he was and where he was from was indeed Grand. The Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for 2012, held October 12 at the Lincoln Firefighters Reception Hall, was the social event of the year for many “old” racers, their families and friends. Nearly three hundred people attended this year’s event with many arriving early to do what old time racers do best - bench race. Master of Ceremonies, John Bishop, had everyone’s attention during his remarks addressing the commitment, drive and dedication that all participants and their families have in the sport of auto racing. He noted how many who help expect nothing in return, but do it simply because of their love for the sport.

John also welcomed and recognized a number of past inductees who attended the event. Guest speaker Joan Parsons Voyles, daughter of 1950 Indy 500 winner Johnnie Parsons, spoke about her life as a child and growing up in a racing family. Her stepfather Duane Carter, brother Johnny Parsons and half-brother Pancho Carter, were all Indy 500 participants. Together, the four had fifty Indy 500 starts - quite a legacy. Those inducted into the Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame for the evening were Chuck Bosselman, Dave Chase, Bob Elic, John Gerloff, Keith Hightshoe, Bob Hubbard and Homer Macklin.

Chuck Bosselman Inducted into Auto Racing Hall of Fame I would just like everyone at Bosselman’s to know that your service center in Hebron, IN has very friendly and helpful associates working for your company.

I found myself in a slightly embarrassing situation last week (locked my keys in the truck) and they were more than helpful in assisting me with finding the corrective action to resolve my unfortunate circumstance. It’s comforting to know that people still help people in distress these days and I am writing this to commend your associates at this location for their creative and trustworthy assistance. I’ve used this location before for repairs and I receive the same upper-echelon service each time I request maintenance related issues with my truck. So thanks again for employing excellent employee’s at your Hebron location and I will continue to use this location for services as the next need arises. D. Alderson via email

I want to thank you for your employee Anthony at the Doniphan Pump &

Pantry on the night of August 24, 2012. Coming home from the Nebraska State Fair we had a water pump go out on our car. Anthony was quick to extend help – courteous and very polite in assisting us to get water and a container for us to use. Our sincere thanks,Dorothy & Duane Dudney, Hastings, NE via mail

I just wanted to let you know about the excellent staff you have in Laramie,

Wyoming. I have a large 45ft luxury motor coach, which many truck shops shy away from. Last year I spoke with Guy Johnson at your Laramie location who was very knowledgeable about RVs and put me at ease leaving a million dollar motor coach at his facility. Your Boss Shop in Laramie has now done everything from oil changes for my engine and generator, to replacing a hub seal, to new tires. I am very pleased with the professionalism of the entire staff at this location. I travel full time, and have discovered the Laramie team is way above any other shops I have tried, and is the only place I will take my bus for service and repair. While traveling through California this week I noticed my 15k service is coming up, and I have changed my travel plans to put me going through Laramie again for my service. Mr Johnson and the staff in Laramie make me feel like their most important customer every time I am there, and treat my coach like it was their own. Unless it is emergency service, this is the only place I will take my coach, and they have developed a lifelong customer. I recently received a phone call from Mr. Johnson just to make sure everything was going well with the coach and thank me for two referrals I sent his way. That was a nice touch, and made me want to send him even more customers. Regards,Troy Marrs

Dear Sir:While travelling on Interstate 80 the plastic panel under the front of my car came loose. I pulled into the Boss Truck Stop and asked if someone could tie it up for me to continue my trip to St. Joe Mo.. A gentleman examined the problem then got some plastic ties, slid under the car and tightened up the panel. I made the rest of my trip without any problems. The gentleman would not accept any payment for his efforts and I regret that I can’t give you any future business because I won’t be traveling in that area again. I wanted to let you know about the help I received and the quality of the personnel you have in place. Please let the gentleman know that his help did not go unnoticed.Joe RamseyNew Braunfels, Texas

My Chevy Tahoe had a flat tire along Interstate 65 and I was able to make

it to your shop in Lowell, Indiana. While your shop does not service cars, I cannot stress enough how your employees took the time to change my tire which presented some difficulties to say the least. The spare was rusted on under the undercarriage and it took extensive work just to release the spare. Your employees were extremely diligent in changing my tire and getting me back on the road as quickly as possible. In what is usually an extremely trying situation, your employees made this experience a good one. Thank you to the gentlemen who took the time to help me out. Please feel free to pass this information along expressing my gratitude. Carolyn Hendrix

Mary Weiss is an insurance claims adjustor who was driving thru Indiana, in June, on her way to report to work in Maryland. Ever since this happened (about 3 ½ months ago), it’s been bugging her because she wanted to call and let us know how much she appreciated what Bridget did for her. However, she couldn’t remember the name of the Shop. Yesterday, she happened to run across something that reminded her of the name Bosselman Boss Shop, so she looked us up on the internet, and gave us a call.Bridget went above and beyond the call of duty to help out this stranded motorist. The axle on Mary’s Ford Explorer broke, and even though Bridget was busy and working on other vehicles, she called around for nearly 3 hours looking for parts. When she couldn’t find the right parts, she didn’t give up. She arranged for a U-Haul truck with a trailer, and then got some of the waiting truck drivers to help out with loading the broken Ford Explorer onto the trailer so Mary could get to Maryland to report to work. Mary made it to Maryland, just in time. Mary praised Bridget for her customer service and her tenacity. Mary said that Bridget didn’t give up, didn’t send her out the door to go somewhere else, she went the extra mile to help her out and this customer is forever grateful.

Way to go Bridget!!!!

It all began with an old Ford Coupe, the colors red, white and blue and a group of friends who formed the Dragons Auto Club. Out of a love for cars, Chuck Bosselman got the racing bug in the 1960s when he built his first late model racing car, a 1958 Chevy. In 1974, he began racing a red, white, and blue Hornet – gave himself the pseudonym Mr. X – and the rest, as they say, is history. That history is now being re-created by Chuck’s son, Charlie, through a 1971 AMC Hornet tribute car. The Hornet was a special car, and not just for Chuck Bosselman. He was the only AMC Hornet race driver in the country, and while there were other AMC cars that were raced during the 70s, he was the only one with a Hornet. Mr. X was sponsored by the factory AMC Team and Chuck helped build the whole process for American Motors. “I’m not sure why he chose to drive a Hornet,” said Charlie Bosselman. “He actually bought the car, and I think somebody set it up for an SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) asphalt deal and he bought the car from that person. He worked with an AMC dealer in town – Don Wilson Motors – and Don was a sponsor of the car and the team. “He got on board with those guys.” Charlie recalls the work his father went to in making the Hornet a one-of-a-kind race car. “Rambler motors were big, strong motors back then and they were also built by AMC. He found the Hornet and had access to the motors and eventually put the two together,” Charlie remembered. “Right after that started, Don Wilson died, so dad just kind of took the car from there and went with it.” “Dad loved racing because of the competition, the people and everything surrounding that. He had a pretty good crew, and they always prepared a good car. The company was always involved with sponsorship, so that kept him going too.” Charlie cherishes plenty of memories from those race days in his childhood. He remembers racing go carts with his cousin around an old turkey farm building that doubled as his father’s race car shop. Following his father’s entrepreneurial spirit, he ran a t-shirt shop with his cousin and sister, and travelled with dad when he raced and would sneak into the pits. Chuck raced in and won many races throughout the Midwest, including the 1974 Nebraska State Fair Championship. The idea for the restoration came a few years ago to Charlie when he bought a 1971 Hornet. And, while it’s not the same car his father drove, it is the style that he raced. “I bought it about four years ago and just started tinkering with it in the last year or so. Finally I had George Anderson, who has Gessford Engines in Hastings, help me finish it up,” Charlie says. “He put in a new motor, the suspension, the roll

cage, stripped the whole car down and had it repainted. He has pretty much restored it to what my dad had at that point. One difference is that his was set up for dirt, and mine will be set up for asphalt.”Finding parts has been the most difficult part of the restoration, according to Charlie. “There weren’t a lot of these cars, especially high performance ones,” he said. “I’m setting it up to do vintage racing, and you’re supposed to restore them back to the original type setup. Trying to find original parts has been almost impossible, so I’ve had to go out and find a lot of aftermarket stuff, and it’s taken a while to get it all. The suspension has been the most difficult part, finding good quality suspension replacement parts.” When the car is done, Charlie plans to race it in a vintage series, for cars 1972 and older. “It’s a vintage racing series where you race against older cars, and this is more of a gentleman’s sport because you don’t want to tear up a very expensive car, but they do race pretty hard. So I just have to get the car ready for that and maybe do some other SCCA events.” On October 12, Charlie took the restored Hornet to Lincoln, to honor the night Chuck was inducted into the Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame. The restored car is a lasting tribute to his father and the remembrance of great childhood memories for Charlie Bosselman. “Mr. X” lives on.

Letters From Our CustomersI wanted to take a few minutes to tell

you how wonderful your mechanic and desk staff was yesterday in Fargo, ND. Around noon as I was leaving town from a weekend trip, my air intake hose popped off my diesel Excursion. Being 6+ hours away from home with a car full of dogs and people, it was completely upon chance I found your Fargo location. The desk staff had a mechanic come out and look at my engine right away. The mechanic saw it was a simple broken clamp and had me back on the road in minutes. I appreciated the honesty and speed with which the repair happened. Your staff and mechanic were friendly, fair, and efficient. Again, thank you and your staff.Sincerely,Karen Zimny, Waseca, MN

We would like to let you know that the guys at the Boss Shop in

Ft. Chiswell, VA are outstanding! We cannot say ‘thank you’ enough times for the help provided to us by Brandon, Anthonie and Robert on Sunday, July 8. My husband and I were driving home to Knoxville, TN from visiting his family in Richmond, VA. About 4 hours away from Knoxville, we noticed the AC in our car wasn’t working very well. We pulled over so my husband could take a look and the compressor was not working properly. We decided to get back on the road and keep the AC off in almost 100 degree temperatures for the remainder of the trip hoping and praying to make it home without any mishaps. About an hour later, we could tell there was a “hot” smell to the car. We continued to drive the car passing several exits when my husband told me very quickly to just pull over! We pulled into a Flying J with the compressor smoking! We tried to find any kind of auto/mechanic shop on

our phones, but nothing was nearby. On the hill above the Flying J was a Boss Shop so we decided to walk up there to ask if anyone there knew of somewhere we could take the car. Brandon tells us to bring the car to the shop so one of the mechanics could take a look. After determining that the car would not be driveable, between Brandon, Anthonie and Robert, they made phone calls to local auto part stores, took my husband to an Advance Auto Parts to buy a new compressor; Robert replaced the compressor (in between working on trucks coming into the shop) and had us on our way!! We know they did not have to do any of this! They were an answered prayer and there is no other explanation! So, thank you so much and God bless you, Brandon, Anthonie and Robert for your amazing, courteous help!Alice & David Pope, Knoxville, TNVia email

When my wife and I lost the air in our tire not far from you [Grand Island,

NE Boss Shop] we were wondering how we were going to get to Denver in time for my wife’s brother’s funeral. Thanks to the efforts of the folks in your department we made it on time. The people at the front desk and in the repair shop were not only courteous, but were also anxious to help us in our time of need. When they could not find a rim to replace the one that was damaged, they repaired the original one. Our thanks to all of them. We will always remember what you did for us and will never hesitate to recommend your place of business. Thanks again, Don & Joyce SchwartzVia email

I was so impressed by Dee at the Second Street (Grand Island,

I have had my construction crew working in the Kearney area for

the last couple of weeks. We start early due to the hot weather. Since our work here is coming to an end, I wanted to make sure to let you know that we were working close to your pump up north on 56th Street. I am very happy to have had the experience of being a customer of that little gal that works in the morning. She always has a smile, even at 5:30AM. She is polite and one of the most friendly cashiers I have ever met. She lets us know if there are any specials, (which the gatorade came in handy during this heat wave). She always greets us when we walk in the door and the “thank you” and “have a great day” when we are leaving can go a long way. There is a great atmosphere when she is there. I hope that the other pumps around the other areas we will be working have employees like her. Thank you,Cesar Gonzalesvia email

Just want to let you know that I stay at this Motel 6 [Grand Island] quite often

for business and love it. The staff is very friendly and greet me by name when I walk in. The rooms are very clean and the hotel is always very well maintained. I travel a lot for business and this is one of the best Motel 6s around this area!! Staying here is like staying at a Hilton without all the extra charges. News:The Nebraska Danger shipped a case of Jack Links jerky from the June 2 game to troops in Afghanistan, thanks to a contact through Bosselman Marketing Director Stephanie King-Witt via the Nebraska Bowhunters Association. We received the following notes:Sir,What a surprise that I received 4 full boxes of beef jerky and sunflower seeds! You rock our guys here!!! As you may know, many of our Soldiers are meat-lovers, and they all love jerky and sunflower seeds. The only joy here in this barren land--at least the biggest joy is to receive a care package. And you hit the center of the bulls eye. I can’t wait until I receive venison jerky from you which would be another rock for our Soldiers. Attached please find and enjoy my ministerial story board of July. Thank you for the faithful support and prayers.May the Lord God bless your heart and hand.Very Respectfully,CH (CPT) Jae J. My Chaplin Captain Kim disbursed the jerky and seeds to everyone here in our battalion and it was very much appreciated. It warms our hearts to receive care packages from complete strangers. It amazes me how just the small things over here mean so much more than when you are back home safe and sound. Being over here is a BIG eye opener and really makes you realize just how good Americans have it back home. Tell everyone that either donated or helped to gather these contributions thank you and God Bless them. SPC Kimberly Kassiris84th EOD BNBargram AirfieldAPO AE 09354UNCLASSIFIED

The Nebraska Danger celebrated their 2nd birthday on October 4 by giving away an ATV courtesy of Tri-City Cycle Works! Linda Pawloski of Farwell was the winner of the black Can-Am ATV. She is pictured here with Danger staff and her family. Congratulations, Linda! Additionally, after recently returning from the IFL’s annual League Meetings in Las Vegas, General Manager Mike McCoy is pleased to announce that the Nebraska Danger’s season ticket sales and sponsorship sales lead the league. “I’m extremely excited with where we are at in our off-season progress and sales and recruiting efforts for the 2013 season,” comments McCoy. “Our 2013 schedule should be announced soon. Happy 2nd Birthday Danger!810 Bottles Donated at Genoa Pump & PantryThe Genoa Pump & Pantry teamed up with their local school’s booster club to ‘boost’ sales of Gatorade during the Gatorade contest. The following note was received following the contest at the store from the Booster Club: To say a simple thank you seems inadequate when one considers the magnitude of the outcome – an idea, paired with salesmanship, and the generosity of so very many people willing to contribute to the Twin River students equaled a highly successful campaign. In the recent promotion to sell Gatorade, Genoa’s Bosselman Pump & Pantry came up with the idea to boost sales by asking their customers if they would like to purchase a 32 ounce bottle of Gatorade to be donated to Twin River Activities. The response was phenomenal – 54 cases, some 810 bottles, of Gatorade

were brought for the students of Twin River. Sandy Tarnick, Genoa Pump & Pantry Manager, asked the Twin River Booster Club to be in charge of distributing the Gatorade to the teams, organizations, and students of Twin River. The Booster Club, along with the Twin River Students express their gratitude to every single person who purchased Gatorade for the students participating in extracurricular activities. Special thanks is given to the “Pump” girls: Sandy, Tammi, Karol, Maggie, Kim, Sallie and Kayla for their exceptional

efforts in promoting the purchase of Gatorade for Twin River. Thank you again for all that you, your employees, and your customers did to extend this gift to the students at Twin River.Cary J. Cromwell

The new store was built directly behind the former building and in mid-October the building was removed to allow for parking and pumps for the new build.

Top Gun: Maire Takes Home National TitleShooting straight is one of Mitch Maire’s talents – and we’re not talking about his recent role as Recruiter for the Boss Shops division. Maire was one of a thousand participants in the AIM Grand America (Youth Program of the Amateur Trapshooting Association) shooting competition at the World Shooting Complex in Sparta, Illinois August 6-7, 2012. At age four, Maire was helping his grandpa load BB guns and learning to shoot cans on the side of a hill. Shooting competitively since age 14, he was a part of the Grand Island Senior High Trap Team and placed at several state competitions in high school and other ATA events, and competing and winning nationally last year as well. To qualify for the national competition, Maire placed at the State competition in Nebraska over the summer. 16-yard targets didn’t faze him and his Browning XT Trap Edition shotgun in shooting trap. Maire went on to win the national championship title for trap shooting in his age group (seniors/men age 20-23). A shootoff with two other participants, a male and a female, set the stage for Maire to clinch that championship. The first shooter missed his first two rocks. Maire matched 20 rocks straight against the female shooter until she finally missed the twenty-first rock. “I shot perfect to win,” Maire said. “My heart was definitely jumping and my hands were shaking, knowing that if you hit this you’re a national champ and if you miss it you’re in another shootoff.” In addition to competing in the trap contest, AIM vendors sponsored a Shooting Carnival with a variety of shooting challenges. Maire took first in Browning trap doubles, first in the Ruger pistol shoot, first in Annie Oakley (participants line

up and fire in order; if someone misses they are out), first in the Remington trap handicap at varying yardages from 18 to

27 yards, second in the Snooker Shootoff (rocks have varying point values), third in the Beretta Pistol Challenge, and third in a three-gun tactical challenge, taking aim with three different guns – an AR-15, shotgun and a Ruger pistol. “Nationals were an amazing experience – three and a half miles of trap houses, it’s so unbelievable that you can’t even see the end of them,” Maire added. “It was awesome to get to meet the representatives of the various gun companies, like the guys from Browning, Winchester, Kohler, Remington, Benelli, and lots of others.” “There was a huge exhibition hall where you could check out various guns and shoot them – I even got to shoot an $18,000 shotgun. They had a trick shooter who shot skeet targets while on a bike, one-handed. My dad went along with me, and we had an awesome time. It was a great father-son bonding experience.”

Although Maire could compete in the youth competition through 2013, he’s ready to call it quits, stating, “It really takes a lot of time, money, and practice, and by next year I think I’ll just be too busy.” In August, Maire left the Bosselman Companies to attend chiropractic school in Kansas City. We wish him the best!

Grand Island Motel 6 Review Posted on Trip Advisor! We had to make a sudden trip to Grand Island due to a death in the family, so price was definitely important and the sole reason behind why we chose this property. All in all, we expected a room to crash for a few hours and not much more beyond that. However, I could not have been more impressed with this Motel 6! We were greeted by one of the most friendly faces behind the desk (I believe his name was Marvin) and mind you, this was at 3:00 AM when most clerks at this time seem a little less than personable in my experiences. Not this time! He was most helpful, extremely professional and accommodating. When we got to our room, I could not believe this was a Motel 6, considering the brand’s sometimes not so good reputation. Wrong again! This room was practically brand new in appearance, exceptionally clean and beyond comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, it was simple and not overly large, but it fit the bill by concentrating on the simple basic things that travelers want- something I think other hotel chains have lost sight of by offering all the “thrills”. The bathroom was large with a very unique shower; but most importantly it was spotless from corner to corner! The common areas inside the hotel were well taken care of, updated and clean; and the lush green lawn outside was beautiful. What a gem! My hats off to this hotel, the management and staff! Exceptional job, well done! I couldn’t have been more impressed if I had stayed at Hilton!

Architechtural renderings of the new store design. Grandma Max’s/Motel 6 Softball Team Takes 2nd at State Grandma Max’s and Motel 6 of Big Springs sponsored a women’s softball team which made it to state this summer, playing in Hastings, Nebraska. The team batted their way to second place in the tournament even though some of the players were a little rusty and some hadn’t played together before. Team members were comprised of women from Big Springs, Doniphan, Kearney, Grand Island, Giltner, and even a player from Illinois. The team had a great time and wants to thank Bosselman’s for helping them all come together and do what they love.
