Comprehensive Security Management Implementing a secure network means providing protection at the network perimeter as well as the core. Summit X350 series switches use advanced security functions to help protect your network from known or potential threats. Security offerings from Extreme Networks encompass three key areas: user and host integrity, threat detection and response, and hardened network infrastructure.
IP SecurityExtremeXOSIPSecurityFrameworkhelpsprotectthenetworkinfrastructure,networkservicessuchasDHCPandDNSandhostcomputersfromspoofingandman-in-themiddleattacks.Italsohelpsprotectthenetworkfromstaticallyconfiguredand/orspoofedIPaddressesandbuildsanexternaltrusteddatabaseofMAC/IP/portbindingsprovidingthetraffic’ssourcefromaspecificaddressforimmediatedefense.
Identity ManagerIdentityManagerallowsnetworkmanagerstotrackuserswhoaccesstheirnetwork.UseridentityiscapturedbasedonNetLoginauthentication,LLDPdiscoveryandKerberossnooping.ExtremeXOSusestheinformationtothenreportontheMAC,VLAN,computerhostname,andportlocationoftheuser.Further,IdentityManagercancreatebothrolesandpolicies,andthenbindthemtogethertocreaterole-basedprofilesbasedonorganizationalstructureorotherlogicalgroupings,andapplythemacrossmultipleuserstoallowappropriateaccesstonetworkresources.Inaddition,supportforWideKeyACLsfurtherimprovessecuritybygoingbeyondthetypicalsource/destinationandMACaddressasidentificationcriteriaaccessmechanismtoprovidefilteringcapabilities.

Port MirroringToallowthreatdetectionandprevention,SummitX350switchessupportmany-to-oneandone-to-manyportmirroring.Thisallowsthemirroringoftraffictoanexternalnetworkappliancesuchasanintrusiondetectiondevicefortrendanalysisorforutilizationbyanetworkadministratorfordiagnosticpurposes.
User Authentication and Host Integrity Checking
Network Login NetworkLogincapabilityenforcesuseradmissionandusagepolicies.SummitX350seriesswitchessupportacomprehensiverangeofNetworkLoginoptionsbyprovidingan802.1xagent-basedapproach,aWeb-based(agent-less)logincapabilityforguests,andaMAC-basedauthenticationmodelfordevices.WiththesemodesofNetworkLogin,onlyauthorizedusersanddevicesarepermittedtoconnecttothenetworkandbeassignedtotheappropriateVLAN.
Multiple Supplicant SupportSharedportsrepresentapotentialvulnerabilityinanetwork.MultiplesupplicantcapabilityonaswitchallowsittouniquelyauthenticateandapplytheappropriatepoliciesandVLANsforeachuserordeviceonasharedport.
MultiplesupplicantsupporthelpssecureIPTelephonyandwirelessaccess.Convergednetworkdesignsofteninvolvetheuseofsharedports(seeFigure2).
Host Integrity CheckingHostintegritycheckinghelpskeepinfectedornoncompliantmachinesoffthenetwork.SummitX350seriesswitchessupportahostintegrityorendpointintegritysolutionthatisbasedonthemodelfromtheTrustedComputingGroup.
Extensive MAC and IP Security Functionality
Media Access Control (MAC) SecurityMACsecurityallowsthelockdownofaporttoagivenMACaddressandlimitingthenumberofMACaddressesonaport.MACsecuritycanbeusedtodedicateportstospecifichostsordevicessuchasVoIPphonesorprintersandavoidabuseoftheport—acapabilitythatcanbeespeciallyusefulinenvironmentssuchashotels.Inaddition,anagingtimercanbeconfiguredfortheMAClockdown,protectingthenetworkfromtheeffectsofattacksusing(oftenrapidly)changingMACaddresses.

Denial of Service ProtectionSummitX350caneffectivelyhandleDoSattacks.IftheswitchdetectsanunusuallylargenumberofpacketsintheCPUinputqueue,itwillassembleACLsthatautomaticallystopthesepacketsfromreachingtheCPU.Afteraperiodoftime,theseACLsareremoved,andreinstallediftheattackcontinues.
