Our MissionRaise and allocate philanthropic funds, primarily for the hospital’s programs and services that benefit the underserved, the elderly and the community. Our focus is on areas and issues that enhance the hospital’s mission but do not fall within the normal parameters of the hospital or its budget. The Summit Medical Center Health Foundation is the primary foundation for St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco, Colorado.

Where else can you see the stars as close and as bright? When the local and professional stars hit the dance floor at Summit County’s largest gala event, you will be even closer to some of the brightest local celebrities and hottest professional dancers in the country.

Sponsor tables ring the first, second and third rows around the center dance floor. The performance is broadcast live on large screens visible from any table, so there is not a bad seat in the house. Sponsor tables are selling fast and individual tickets will also be sold out soon. In 2010 the event sold out almost 30 days in advance. We invite you to gather your friends and buy a table now.

Jodee Trainor was our first local star to put on her dancing shoes. Last September at the 2010 event Jodee accepted her beauty-pageant sash as the symbolic start to her new dancing career. Jodee is the VP of Patient Care / Chief Nursing Officer at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center and she committed early to the rigorous training and rehearsal schedule required of the local stars. A 39-year healthcare professional, Jodee knows what a difference Foundation programs can mean to a patient needing medical services.

“If one patient has a better outcome then every hour I sacrifice to practice; every blister and sore muscle I endure; and even every fall I take will all be worthwhile,” explained Jodee as she talked about her motivation to be a Mountain Star.

A Day in the Life of Flight For Life ColoradoFlight For Life Colorado is the busiest and most sophisticated critical care air transport program in the region. As an extension of our hospital’s Level III trauma center and intensive care units, Flight For Life routinely transports patients to the closest appropriate hospital and never questions a patient’s ability to pay. As you can see from a typical daily log, the critical care that patients receive in the first hour after an accident or illness may mean the difference between life and death. The Summit Medical Center Health Foundation is honored to help fund Flight For Life in Summit County to ensure that lives are saved. With the completion of the helicopter hanger in February 2007, Lifeguard 2 no longer sits unprotected in our harsh mountain weather conditions. New computers and equipment have also been funded by the Foundation, in addition to ongoing support for the operation of the 24/7 program. We are grateful for donors who regularly dedicate their gifts to Flight For Life Colorado.

12:32AM Terra 3 is requested by Denver Health Medical Center to transport a 10-day-old patient, experiencing respiratory distress, to The Children’s Hospital for a higher level of neonatal care.

1:57AM Lifeguard 4 responds to Parkview Medical Center for a 65-year-old patient needing transport to Memorial Hospital after being physically assaulted and is suffering from a multi-system trauma.

5:12AM Memorial Hospital requests that the adult fixed wing team transport a 13-year-old patient, who overdosed on medication, to The Children’s Hospital for a higher level of tertiary care.

5:34AM Lifeguard 2 is dispatched to Grand River Medical District to transport an 11-month-old patient, having seizures, to The Children’s Hospital for diagnostic neurological treatment.

10:41AM St. Mary’s Hospital and Medical Center requests that the newborn young child team transport a 2-year-old patient, with an airway obstruction, to The Children’s Hospital for a higher level of pediatric care.

10:45AM Terra 1 is dispatched to St. Anthony North Hospital to transport a 10-year-old patient, experiencing diabetic shock, to The Children’s Hospital for a higher level of care.

12:11PM Lifeguard 4 is requested by Mount San Rafael for a 63-year-old patient experiencing cardiopulmonary arrest, with CPR in progress, to be transported to St. Anthony Central Hospital.

12:37PM Terra 1 is dispatched to St. Anthony North for a 27-year-old patient, with sepsis, to Vibra Hospital for tertiary care.

3:38PM Lifeguard 1 is requested by Cheyenne Regional Medical Center to transport a 9-month-old patient to The Children’s Hospital. The patient was involved in a fall, and is now suffering from an intracranial bleed.

3:54PM Terra 1 is dispatched to Littleton Adventist Hospital for a 13-year-old patient, newly diagnosed with diabetes, to The Children’s Hospital for a higher level of care.

4:06PM Lifeguard 2 is requested by Clear Creek EMS for a 25-year-old patient with a gunshot wound to the head, to St. Anthony Central Hospital for Level 1 trauma care.

7:43PM Terra 3 is dispatched to a Children’s Hospital satellite facility, based at Parker Adventist Hospital, to transport a 4-year-old patient. Patient will be transported to The Children’s Hospital main campus after ingesting hydrogen peroxide.

8:22PM Lifeguard 1 and 2 are dispatched in a “Double Chopper Go” by Summit County EMS to Idaho Springs, CO where two patients, a 7-year-old and a 10-year-old, are suffering from multi-system traumas after being involved in a motor vehicle accident in Summit County. They will require immediate transport to The Children’s Hospital for Level 1 trauma care.

Board Member Spotlight ... Farewell Sr. Rita

With fondness and many thanks we say goodbye to Sr. Rita Cammack who resigned her position as the Vice President of Mission Integration at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center. Sr. Rita’s last day was July 19, 2011. She served on the Summit Medical Center Health Foundation board and was the President of the Bristlecone Foundation. Sr. Rita has been a Registered Nurse for 30 years and is a Board Certified Chaplain. She began her career with Centura Health in 2006 where she worked in the Pastoral Care Department at Littleton Adventist Hospital. In 2008, she was promoted to her role at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center. Sr. Rita will be leaving Centura Health to assume her elected role, serving as the Provincial Minister in her religious community – the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, Sacred Heart Province. This new leadership position is a part of a team of four women who lead a province of 47 Sisters who live mostly in Colorado and Nebraska. She will be based in Denver and says, “I have been blessed by Summit County and will sorely miss the people and the audacious beauty of God’s handiwork.” We congratulate and extend our best wishes to Sr. Rita in her important new role.

On June 23, hospital staff, community members and guests, donors and volunteers gathered in the lobby of the hospital to recognize and bless the Jackson Surgical Table, Nuclear Medicine Camera and the Surgical Services Expansion.

Paul Chodkowski thanked the Foundation donors for their support which makes these hospital improvements possible. Without the ongoing fundraising and proceeds from Dancing with the Mountain Stars, the hospital would not be able to provide this state-of-the-art equipment. “Our hospital is blessed with a quality of healthcare most rural communities our size simply do not have the resources to deliver,” said Paul.

In her blessing prayer, Sr. Rita Cammack also recognized Catholic Health Initiatives for their support and help in bringing these improvements to our hospital. She and Fr. Randy Dollins blessed the spaces and the equipment and prayed for the healing presence of God in each of the rooms and upon the Jackson Surgical Table.

After the ceremony guests enjoyed delectable hors d’oeuvres provided by Chef Marshall Helgeson and his Sodexo staff. Guests were invited to don “bunny suits” (sterile OR gear) to tour the operating rooms and were encouraged to visit the Nuclear Medicine imaging room as well.

Foundation Supports Rwanda Clubfoot Mission Trip

While most of us take for granted the ability to dance the night away or hike up a mountain, many children in Rwanda are born with clubfoot and have difficulty even taking their first steps. This appears to be such a common problem in Rwanda that Dr. Peter Janes, Vail · Summit Orthopaedics surgeon, is committed to a project to address this critical area of need. He is developing a training program in cooperation with the School of Medicine in Rwanda to teach serial casting procedures for children with clubfoot. Doctors in the U.S. routinely treat clubfoot with casting and Dr. Janes is very familiar with how this early procedure can correct clubfoot without having to deal with all the surgical risks involved once the children get older.

Dr. Janes approached the Summit Medical Center Health Foundation in March with a request to fund travel expenses for four nurses who will be part of the August mission trip to Rwanda. The board voted to fund $1,500 per person to help with airfare and other travel expenses. Most of the CHI hospitals sponsor international mission projects and this Rwanda Clubfoot project is the first time the Summit Medical Center Health Foundation will be supporting a medical mission trip. The hospital is also allocating funds to the trip and the CHI Mission and Ministry Fund just approved a grant request that was submitted by the Foundation for $57,000.

Dr. Janes made a trip to Rwanda last August and we wish his team a safe and successful trip as they return to the same small rural Mugonero Hospital near Lake Kivu to teach and perform other much needed orthopaedic surgeries. Clinical staff members from other Centura hospitals— Avista, Littleton Adventist, Parker and Porter are also joining the team, in addition to Centura Health, Catholic Health Initiatives staff members and friends.
