The Summit At Saratoga 1 Perry Road Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 518-430-2136www.summitsaratoga.com
April is the fi rst full month of Spring. Rainy and wet one day, the next day full of a warm promise of green growth to come. The Latin word aperio, meaning “to open or bud,”
gives us the name April.
So many special themes to celebrate in April… Humor Month, Jazz month and Earth Day! Bring a funny joke to Happy Hour on the 1st and come listen to jazz pianist Cole Broderick on the 19th. Save a tree and bring your own mug to the Great Room.
We are excited to have several “Summit University” Lifelong Learning presentations this month. Join us on the 17th for Union College’s Lifelong Learning Speaker, Greg Sauer, on The Fur Trade and Exploration of America. Also, on the 30th, local author Matthew Rozell will be back to present on his book on the Holocaust, ‘A Train Near Magdeburg’. Mr. Rozell’s book is available on Amazon if you would like to read it prior to the lecture.
With spring here and the days fi lled with sunshine, it’s time to get outside… help our “Step On It” group reach Australia, hear fr om Physical Therapist Matt Goodemote on Balance & Gait and learn more about the game of Pickle Ball on the 19th.
We are adding a new class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon- a Low Impact Aerobics class with weights. Come check it out!
A special thank you to all of our volunteers, residents as well as, our community volunteers. We are able to accomplish so much more due to all of your help!
Warm regards,
Join us in recognizing the volunteers who give generously of their time
to The Summit at Saratoga. A special thank you to our residents who
assist us in so many ways!
Residents are welcome to make a baked good for the Fire Department
and The Wilton Emergency Squad. We will be surprising them on
Tuesday, April 16.

My Odyssey by TANYA SMITHI was born in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, one of the most beautiful towns in the world. My father and mother were part of an artists’ colony that had settled in San Miguel aft er World War II. My father was an art professor at La Esquela de Bellas Artes and my mother was his art student and model. My father built a beautiful house on a hill overlooking the town which was featured in an article in Life Magazine. Here he could paint and draw the city fr om our rooft op terrace.
I took my fi rst steps in Florence, Italy on the slippery cobblestones. We then headed to Paris, France where my father exhibited his paintings and my mother tried her hand at modeling in one of the many Paris fashion houses. I really loved the story my parents told me of how they met Orson Welles in one of the many Paris cafés aft er the movie, The Third Man, had just been released. They said he looked so handsome in his trench coat.
We sailed back to the U.S. in the early 1950s and settled in Greenwich Village. I grew up between the U.S. and Mexico until I was 11 years old. When I graduated high school, I joined the Air Force and became a Medic.
Once I left the Air Force, I came back to New York City and modeled for a living, while attending The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in the evening. I was told by the Academy that I had talent, but I felt it took a lot more perseverance than I had at the time.
I instead went to Hunter College and graduated Cum Laude in Art History. I then got an M.A. in French Literature fr om Rutgers. I started to teach French Literature in Connecticut, where I had moved when I married a very handsome executive and sailor.
I soon returned to work in New York City and ended up in fi nance for many top fi rms. My favorite assignment was hosting the Irving Berlin 100th Birthday Anniversary at Carnegie Hall for ASCAP. I left New York City in 1990 and traveled extensively ending up in Quebec, Canada where I spent seven years teaching American expats how to speak French.
Two and a half years ago I heard The Summit was opening up a residence, which I felt would be a wonderful place to lead a quiet existence. I have been here ever since and have found so many interesting things to do. I especially love going to the museums, the ferry rides on Lake George and the SPAC performances. The Summit has so many interesting functions to keep me occupied. I have met some extraordinary people here and hope to stop roaming for the present.

8.8 million tons of plastics get discarded into our oceans every year. 80 percent of all trash that we create on land ends up in our oceans, of which, 90 percent is plastic. The Pacific Ocean has a “garbage pile” of plastic 2X the size of Texas? We humans now rely on plastic too much and should be mindful of how we use it. Below are 6 Things You Can Do (and Feel No Pain):1. Give up plastic bags. Take your own reusable ones to the store. A trillion plastic shopping bags are used worldwide every year, and 100 billion in the United States alone—that’s almost one per American per day. 2. Skip straws. Americans toss 500 million plastic straws every day, or about 1.5 per person.3. Pass up plastic bottles. Invest in a refillable water bottle. Some come with filters if you’re worried about water quality. Around the world, nearly a million plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute.4. Avoid plastic packaging. i.e., you can buy bar soap instead of liquid. Buy in bulk. Avoid produce sheathed in plastic. 5. Recycle what you can. Even in rich countries, recycling rates are low. Globally, 18 percent of all plastic is recycled. Europe manages 30 percent, China 25—the United States only 9.6. Don’t litter. The Ocean Conservancy has run beach cleanups for 30 years. Of the top 10 types of trash they fi nd, the only non-plastic item is glass bottles. Worldwide, 73 percent of beach litter is plastic. In 2016 the conservancy collected 9,200 tons of trash in 112 countries—only a thousandth of what enters the ocean each year.

Live Well Age Well
The Connected Life Program focuses on
highlighting the four key aspects we believe are a
vital part of a healthy, happy, and balanced life.
Residents are able to choose activities and programs
that complement their personal tastes in Health &
Fitness, Lifelong Learning, Community Activities,
and Leisure & Recreation. The best part? All
programs are free for our residents along with a daily
continental breakfast.
This includes all of our wellness activities, referrals
to community service providers, an array of
educational programs, choices of weekly recreational
events, regular social opportunities and gatherings,
transportation services for shopping, medical visits,
and so much more!
As seniors, sometimes we think we have
seen (and know) it all, but as John Wooden
once said “It’s what you learn after you
know it all that counts.” We have monthly
lectures and presentations on an array of
topics to stimulate the mind.
LEARNING
Being part of a community is more than
just being neighbors. It’s individuals com-
ing together to build each other up, share
similar interests, laugh together, and help
each other grow.
ACTIVITIES
Healthy living is an integral part of the
Connected Life Program. Whether you’re
a devoted yoga class-goer, enjoy taking
evening walks with a friend, love water
aerobics, or just need to meditate in the
morning before you start your day, our
Health program has something for you.
HEALTH
Summit residents are never without an
opportunity to have some fun. Whether
it’s trying their hand at a friendly game
of cards, unwinding in the salon, perfect-
ing their cross stitch, or just relaxing and
catching up with other residents.
