The Summit At Saratoga 1 Perry Road Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 518-430-2136www.summitsaratoga.com

Welcome month of May, where the plantings are budding and the sun shines over us ushering in summer. The same is true here at The Summit, as we ready our outside

areas to enjoy. Join us on the patio for a fr iendly game of bocce or head out to learn how to play the fastest growing sport in the US, Pickleball. Pickleball instruction and games with Betty start on May 15th. Racquets will be available in the pavilion storage room.

This month we honor not only the hard work of our mothers but those who gave their life while serving in our Armed Forces protecting our country. We will celebrate both this month. Come to our Tea & Dessert Buff et on May 8 to honor our mothers. And later in the month we will celebrate and honor those patriots who gave their life for us at our Red, White and Blue Party featuring guitarist, Joe Gorman.

Our Summit University Lifelong Learning program welcomes back professor Marilyn Sassi for her six-week course on The Images of Childhood. A professional genealogist will be in to guide you through the fundamentals of DNA tests.

Try our new Mat Yoga Class on Fridays. Learn all about the benefi ts of yoga by instructor Lin Murphy.

So many other fun events planned as well… the “Seis” De Mayo party, a Nature Walk with Wilton Wildlife Preserve, a trip to Troy Music Hall and Rivers Casino and enjoy a mint julip at our Kentucky Derby Happy Hour-Ladies wear your Derby hats!

Warm regards,

Mother’s Day Tea & DessertsAll residents are invited to join us for a delightful afternoon featuring an

My Journey by Barbara WhippleI was born and raised in Troy, NY. Aft er graduating fr om high school, I became a secretary at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where I met my husband. Aft er he graduated fr om RPI we decided to travel, so we bought two Sears & Roebuck motor scooters and camped out, with a limited budget of $1.00 a day and a pup tent, fr om New York to California and back. What an adventure.

Then we moved to Peekskill, NY and lived at the Military Academy where my husband taught at an all-girls school and I worked as a secretary at Mercer University. We were there for 2 years and that was where our daughter, Tanya, was born. Soon aft er, another job opportunity came up for a teaching position at the American School in Kabul, Afghanistan. This was in the 60’s so, it was a safe place to be but was still considered a hardship post. With one ticket to Afghanistan, we air-hopped across Europe, visited 7 countries and Tanya, age 9 months, took her fi rst step on the island called Rab, on the beach off the coast of Yugoslavia. We lived in Afghanistan for 2 years and it was quite an adventure and nice to have servants and a nanny. While there, I worked for the movie director who was fi lming The Horseman with Omar Sharif.

Aft er returning to the U.S. and several jobs later, I retired fr om Albany Public Library, where I was administrative assistant to the director for 25 years.

My love of travel led me to train travel, once to Florida and another trip to Colorado.

Aft er being in an automobile accident, I found that The Summit would meet all of my needs. I especially like the community garden where I grow vegetables and fl owers. The theatre is another great amenity where several of us gather for movies throughout the week. It was a perfect fi t for me as they provide us with transportation to doctor’s appointments, lunch outings, shopping and community happenings like the Farmer’s Market. I have met so many fabulous people in this fr iendly place and the staff is wonderful!

“Volunteering is a work of heart”

9

Usually, we come to know compassion first from our mothers. We all need it from time to time and we need to have it for others from time to time. No matter where we live, what we have, what our age is. We need to feel for another’s suffering and be willing to help others when the moment arises. It has to do with being thoughtful and decent. Compassion is the culmination of all virtues.

Sometimes this is not as easy for some as it may be for others. However, doing things that we see as uncomfortable or not easy is the price we pay for a meaningful life. Sometimes compassion can be just that. We judge and compare, thinking we are better or more advanced, intellectual. To put yourself in someone else’s shoes is always a good practice. Perhaps best when you find yourself judging another. One day may be good for you and you pick apart another’s life. Then you find yourself in a similar situation the next. Life is a constant flux of juxtapositions. Then you find yourself being judged. This flow keeps us all human; if we are open to it and strive to understand the lesson.

Compassion is not idealistic. It can be considered as a spiritual tool. It is known to be good for your physical and mental health too. It can lower your stress levels and alleviate a feeling of depression. So, be compassionate. Show your flaws and accept others’. It is essential to our spiritual growth as humans and contentment in our daily life.

Live Well Age Well

The Connected Life Program focuses on

highlighting the four key aspects we believe are a

vital part of a healthy, happy, and balanced life.

Residents are able to choose activities and programs

that complement their personal tastes in Health &

Fitness, Lifelong Learning, Community Activities,

and Leisure & Recreation. The best part? All

programs are free for our residents along with a daily

continental breakfast.

This includes all of our wellness activities, referrals

to community service providers, an array of

educational programs, choices of weekly recreational

events, regular social opportunities and gatherings,

transportation services for shopping, medical visits,

and so much more!

As seniors, sometimes we think we have

seen (and know) it all, but as John Wooden

once said “It’s what you learn after you

know it all that counts.” We have monthly

lectures and presentations on an array of

topics to stimulate the mind.

LEARNING

Being part of a community is more than

just being neighbors. It’s individuals com-

ing together to build each other up, share

similar interests, laugh together, and help

each other grow.

ACTIVITIES

Healthy living is an integral part of the

Connected Life Program. Whether you’re

a devoted yoga class-goer, enjoy taking

evening walks with a friend, love water

aerobics, or just need to meditate in the

morning before you start your day, our

Health program has something for you.

HEALTH

Summit residents are never without an

opportunity to have some fun. Whether

it’s trying their hand at a friendly game

of cards, unwinding in the salon, perfect-

ing their cross stitch, or just relaxing and

catching up with other residents.
