With the exception of an occasional wedding invitation or family birthday party, weekends at my house are pretty uneventful. Life in the country with no neighbors in sight is quiet. That’s usually
the way we like it.
This past Saturday was a real eye-opener for me. My husband had gone car shopping and I was home alone with my Maytag and my Hoover Wind Tunnel. The day was destined to be unexciting but productive.
As I poured my second cup of coffee around 9:00, the morning tranquility was interrupted by a deafening engine roar approaching from the south. From the kitchen window, I could see a Harley Davidson behemoth careening up the road. The only thing bigger than the motorcycle was the man piloting the machine. As he got closer, the thunderous roar shook the window panes and sent the dog cowering under the coffee table. I admit I wasn’t surprised to see a long gray beard and ponytail, tattoos, rumpled jeans, black leather vest, and well-worn boots flying by ... a character right out of a terrorizing biker movie and precisely the kind of guy my father told me never to bring home.
Thinking that the day’s excitement was over, I resumed my coffee prep. Before I could take a sip, the roar was returning. The gray-bearded giant drove into the end of my driveway and got off the Harley. I saw that as my cue to lock all the doors and plan a self-defense strategy. But, as I peered from behind the curtain, I saw the biker walk to the middle of the road, bend over to pick up a small object, and then gently place it in the roadside grass ... out of harm’s way. In the time it took the biker to start his engine and resume his journey, the little painted turtle, whose life he had lovingly saved, resumed her journey.
It’s easy to become imprisoned in a world filled with stereotypes, fear, and judgement. I will never forget that gigantic, gray-haired biker and that little turtle. Happy Independence Day!

"Italy to America: My Family's Immigration Journey" tells the story of Giovanni and Maria DeMasi and their two oldest children, who moved from a small town in southern Italy in 1963 and settled in Troy, New York. They are among the tens of millions of people who left behind everyone and everything they knew for the promise of a better life in the United States, contending with laws that for 140 years have restricted who can enter the country.
