Boškarin, the autochthonous Istrian ox with huge horns, has always been the most important farm animal in Istria. It has been used for plowing and pulling carts, whereas the popular expres-sion boškarin originates from the pet name once commonly used for almost all such oxen. Boškarin, dieses autochthone istrische Rind, mit riesigen Hörnern, war in Istrien von je her das wichtigste Arbeitstier. Es wurde beim Pflügen der Äcker vor den Pflug gespannt und zog auch den Wagen. Den volkstümlichen Name Boškarin erhielt es, weil die Bullen früher meistens die-sen Namen als Kosenamen bekamen.

tsAre you ready to walk in the dinosaur footsteps? Imagine that a time machine can take you hundreds of millions of years back into the past. Shrubs of fern thrive everywhere, hanging over your head, and giant plane and magnolia trees reach for the sky.The earth trembles. Stepping towards you is one of the largest land animals that has ever lived on Earth. Its body is 25 meters long, and its neck overtops the trees. You breathe a sigh of relief when you realize that it is eating the top of the nearby tree and has no intention of eating you. It is the brachiosaurus, a giant herbivore feasting on the rich Istrian flora in the distant past.

first appeared about 230 million years ago. These terrestrial animals soon became the most numerous animal group of the Mesozoic. Just like today’s reptiles, dinosaurs were cold-blooded animals and were dependent on the warmth of the sun. Based on their way of life there were bipedal dinosaurs - theropods and four-legged ones - sauropods. Theropod dinosaurs were mostly carnivorous and moved very quickly, while sauropods were herbivorous. All dinosaurs, regardless of their size, laid eggs that were no larger than ostrich eggs. Cape Kamenjak | Kap KamenjakRocks hide fossil remains Die Fel-sen verstecken fossile Überreste The limestone rocks of Kamenjak, from the Upper Cretaceous Period (about 100 million years ago), hide numerous fossils of long extinct organisms. Thus, the coast of Kamenjak represents one of the richest sites of rudist limestone in Europe. These are the rocks that contain rudist fossils, that is, shellfish that lived in groups in shallow warm seas and dominated the Cretaceous Period until the mass extinction 65 million years ago, when they disappeared from the face of the Earth. They had two asymmetrical shells, one in the shape of an elongated horn attached to the seabed, and the other loose and partially attached as a lid. On the western and eastern side of the peninsula there are rudist limestone rocks, and in the coastal area of the Franina Cape numerous remains of rudist fossils can be seen, as well as numerous fossil remains of oyster shells. From the Munat Cape to the Polje Cove and along the central part of the peninsula, all the way to its southern part, there is a stretch of limestone rocks with ammonites, armoured cephalopods, which lived from the Devonian Period (mid-Palaeozoic, more than 350 million years ago) until the end of the Mesozoic (until the end of the Cretaceous, more than 65 million years ago). During the Mesozoic their evolution was extremely rapid. This is why today they

are considered the fossils that allow estimation of the age of rocks in which they were found. Their shell had partitions inside with air chamber filled with gas. In this way, the ammonites could move like submarines. Some of them reached as much as two metres in diameter. Es handelt sich um Gesteine, in denen wir Fossile von Muscheln finden, die in Gruppen in flachen warmen Meeren gelebt haben und die Welt der Kreidezeit, bis zum ihren Aussterben vor 65 Millionen Jahren, als sie vollkommen von der Erdoberfläche verschwunden sind, dominiert haben. Sie hatten zwei asymmetrische Schalen; eine in Form eines ausgedehnten Horns, die am Untergrund befestigt ist und die zweite war frei und als Deckel angewachsen. Es wurde festge-stellt, dass einige Dinosaurier aus dieser Gegend älter als 130 Millionen Jahre sind - zu jener Zeit lebten im Gebiet des heutigen Bale etwa zehn Dinosaurierarten. Der Paleo Park in Bale entführt Sie Millionen Jahre in die Vergangenheit der Erdgeschichte, in die wun-dersame Welt der Dinosaurier, der riesigen Kreaturen, die einst den Planeten beherrschten.

Bale ist eine kleine Stadt in der Nähe von Rovinj und wurde 1995 in die Liste der paläontologischen Stätten aufgenommen. Dies ge-schah auf dem Weltkongress der Paläontologen im chinesischen Peking, nachdem einige Jahre zuvor in diesem Gebiet Dinosau-rierüberreste entdeckt wurden. Die Vielzahl sind Überreste von Sauropoden, Pflanzenfressern, die sich auf vier Füssen fortbewegten. Auch wurden Knochen des Hist-riasaurier, dem ältesten bekannten Dinosaurier-Pflanzenfresser der Welt, sowie die Knochen des Brahiosaurus, einem der größten Dinosaurier gefunden. Paleo Park MonPerin Bale-Valle If you are looking for a place where whole families and groups of school kids can learn and have fun at the same time, the newly built Paleo Park Mon Perin in Bale might be your perfect find. It includes a dinosaur-themed water amusement park and an educational platform on 16.199 sqm area integrated into the authentic landscape. Here, visitors can take a walk between dinosaur replicas in different sizes, which inevitably sparks curiosity and fascination. Bale, a small town not far from Rovinj, was put on the World List of Paleontological Sites at the World Congress of Paleon-tologists in Beijing in 1995, fol-lowing the discovery of dinosaur remains in this area. Most of the remains belong to sauropods, the so called “lizard hipped”, plant-eating types of dinosaurs. Bones of Histriasaurus, world’s oldest known plant-eating dino-saur, and Brachiosaurus, one of the largest dinosaurs ever to roam the Earth, were also found in the area. Remains of meat-eating dinosaur species were identified, too. Besides the

educational walk, the park offers visitors a

chance to relax by the 706 sqm dinosaur-shaped pool area. It in-cludes pools for

kids and adults, and a pool with

massage seats. If you are more of a jacuzzi

or a sunbathing type, you can spend your day in a 20 sqm and 90 cm deep hot tub, or simply enjoy the sun in the large area by the main pool. Children will likely enjoy the sandpits with dinosaur bones. There is also a restaurant with terrace, and changing rooms. As the Paleo Park is located within the Mon Perin campsite, accommodation is easy to arrange. The coastline of Bale is the only site in the world where fossils of extinct reptiles have been preserved under the sea. It is a true paleontological treasure, and is steadily rising to prominence. Scientists revealed that some of the reptiles from Bale are 130 million years old. Ten dinosaur species lived in the area at the time. Bale and its Paleo Park will take you millions of years back into the history of Earth, to the fascinating world of dinosaurs.

A part of the park was built on an old quarry, with movable dinosaurs in their natural size residing in the wild. In Din-opark, you can take your children on a dinosaur ride, take a ride on the adrenalin carousel, and then take a break enjoying a thrilling acrobatic show. Dinosaur footprints The richness of Brijuni is also amplified by geopal-eontological sites where more than 200 footprints of dinosaurs have been discovered. It is believed that these ancient reptiles walked Brijuni 125-100 million years ago. We all know that walking on sandy beaches leaves traces which waves, tides, and rain destroy very quickly, so we can conclude that the likelihood of preserving the traces is not great. Therefore, dinosaur foot-prints are rare and extremely valuable since they represent autochthonous findings. When sailing into the port of Veliki Brijun and leaving the boat, it is possible to see the three-toed print in the limestone block, probably left by large theropod carnivore. Until now, dinosaur tracks have been discovered at four sites of the National Park: Veliki Brijun and the islands of Vanga, Galija and Vrsar. For visitors there are available footprints on the island of Veliki Brijun, as well as on Cape Ploče and Cape Vrbanj. In order to illustrate the size of these Mesozoic beings that left their traces here for our visitors, a dinosaur reconstruction has been put up on Cape Vrbanj, a scientific and artistic sculpture of a theropod, a predatory carnivore, that is the result of collaboration of numerous experts in various fields.

Dinosaurier Fuss Drucke Der Reichtum der Brijuni-Inseln verschlim-mert auch die geopaleontologischen Stätten, an denen über 200 Fuß große Spuren von Dinosauriern gefunden wurden. Es wird vermutet, dass diese alten Reptilien vor 125 bis 100 Millionen Jahren nach Brijuni gingen. Wir alle wissen, dass das Wandern an Sandstränden sehr schnell Spuren von Wellen, Gezeiten und Regen hinterlässt, sodass wir zu dem Schluss kommen können, dass die Wahrscheinlichkeit, die Drucke zu erhalten, nicht groß ist. Dinosaurier Fuß Dru-cke sind daher selten und äußerst wertvoll, da sie indigene Funde darstellen. Am Eingang des Hafens und des Schiffes kann man im Kalksteinblock einen dreiseitigen Druck einer großen Gruppe von Teropoden sehen. Bisher wurden Dinosaurier Fuß Drucke an vier Orten des Nationalparks festgestellt: im Großen Brijuni und auf den Inseln Vanga, Galija und Vrsar. Für Besucher gibt es Drucke auf dem Großen Brijuni, an den Kape Ploče und Vrbanj. Um die Aufmerksamkeit der Besucher auf die Größe dieser mesozoischen Wesen zu lenken, die hier Spuren hinterließen, wurde auf der Kap Vrbanj der Dinosaurier rekonstruiert, die wissenschaftlich-künstlerische Skulptur der Teropoden, das räuberische Fleischesser, das Ergebnis der gemeinsamen Arbeit mehrerer Experten ver-schiedener Disziplinen ist.

Mahrenfels Castle Schloß MährenfelsYou can find Lupoglav at the crossing of the roads where the main route from Trieste to Rijeka branches towards the centre of the peninsula. The modern-day Lupoglav is the centre of a municipality spread-ing out from the slopes of the Učka and the Ćićarija down to Boljun Valley in the south. The place is teaming with new fam-ily detached houses built along the road.However, there is no familiar vertical of a bell tower so often found in other Istrian places marking their centres. How

come? In order to understand the current situation, one must raise their eyes towards the steep slopes of the Ćićarija and look for an elevation where the Mahrenfels Castle, the resi-dence of the Lupoglav allodial estate, stood until the mid 17th century. The Castle was situat-ed about 1.5 km east of today’s town.

Brigido CastleAbout 350 meters east of the railway station, on the left hand side, one can find an old building surrounded by a

tall stone wall. This is not the old Mahrenfels Castle; it is a country mansion of the noble Brigido Family. The mansion was built soon after they had purchased the Lupoglav allodi-al estate in 1634 and decided to abandon the old castle on the hill. Count Pompeo I Brigi-do was an Austrian state sec-retary. His nephew and heir, Pompeo II Brigido, was the Governor and military com-mander of Trieste from 1787 to 1804 Lupoglav was owned by the Brigido Family until 1883.The family ran their estate well

and successfully introduced many agricultural novelties, particularly in livestock farm-ing, e.g. breeding of merino sheep, Egyptian sheep and Angora goat. The estate was a model estate of its time and many Istrian farmers sent their heirs to learn practical estate, agriculture and farming man-agement and one day to be-come independent and com-petent managers. On the other hand, the Brigidos were also remembered for their brutal behaviour towards their sub-jects, who were forced to lead uprisings such as, for example, the one which took place in 1847.

The Mahrenfels CastleFollowing the road from the Brigido Castle for another 100 metres we come to a cross-roads where we turn left. Af-ter about 150 metres there is a road turning right towards Brest. After another 500 m in the direction of Brest we come to the local cemetery. Along the western entrance to the cemetery a 500-meter long old drive will take us to the remnants of the ancient Mahrenfels Fort. We can notice that in some sections the drive was literally cut into the solid rock. In some places there are indentations at a regular dis-tance caused by rig wheels.Lupoglav was first mentioned in a written document in 1064.It was the deed of donation by King Henry IV where Lupoglav was mentioned as Lompaga; the Castrum de Lupoglau was mentioned in 1264 when it was granted in fealty to Henry of Pazin by the Patriarch of Aqui-leia. Since then Lupoglav expe-rienced the same situation as

the County of Pazin, first under the rule of the Counts of Go-rizia and then of the Austrian Empire. The Castle was inhab-ited by castellans from various feudal families: the Ebersteins, the Herbersteins, the Kružićs, the Sinkovićs and the Eggen-bergs. Sparse but however nu-merous historical records have been preserved from those times, some of them feature even romantic episodes. Thus it was recorded that Ana, the last heir of the Eberstein family remained widowed at the age of 22 and a powerful Styrian squire Ernest Lobmig hired a young Pazin captain Gunter Herberstein to ask Ana’s hand in marriage on his behalf.However, the young Herber-stein fell in love at first sight and, forgetting his mission, proposed himself and Ana gladly accepted his proposal. The hurt squire Lobming occu-pied the Castle where the wed-ding was held the very next day and took the newlyweds in captivity in the Eppenstein Castle. They were released after a few months following an intercession by the Aus-trian Duke Ernest. It was also recorded that one of the heirs of the Lupoglav estate, Georg Herberstein, had a nervous breakdown in Neustadt, and put a saddle on his head in-stead of a helmet, jumped off his horse and forced his serv-ants to do the same and follow him to Lupoglav. This incident was blamed upon an old peas-ant woman who, after being accused of witchcraft, was locked in a tower, where she died thus avoiding burning at the stake. The most famous is-sue of the Herberstein Family, who remained at Lupoglav for

more than 150 years, was by all means Sigismund Herberstein (1486-1566), a soldier, diplo-mat and writer, a man who travelled twice to Russia as the Emperor’s emissary.

His descriptions of the travels were published in 1549 and were the first to make Russia more familiar to the Europe-ans. Even though being born in Vipava he spent most of his life in Vienna, where he was re-membered for an episode that occurred during the Venice War in 1510. Upon hearing that the Venetians were besieging Paz-in, as commander of the Aus-trian cavalry he decided not to ride to Graz to ask for help, but together with his 14 horsemen he assaulted Pazin directly from Lupoglav. He lifted the siege and consolidated the town defence preventing Venice from occu-pying Pazin. One of the owners of the Lupoglav Castle was a Captain from Senj, Petar Kružić, who excelled in the war against the Ottoman invaders and died in 1537 commanding the de-fence of Klis. At the beginning of the 17th century, the Castle of Lupoglav, then owned by, Ivan Sinkovich, also from Senj, pro-vides a safe haven for a great number of Uskok soldiers. Un-der his lead these soldiers raid-ed the neighbouring Venetian areas (Roč, Buzet, Rašpor). Ten years after Sinković’s death, the estate was sold by Ferdinand of Austria to Count Eggenberg. After his death the new own-er became Count Brigido from the beginning of our story. He decided to abandon the old Mahrenfels Castle, built on a difficult to access hill, and to build a new one in the plain.

Lupoglav liegt an der Kreu-zung von Verkehrswegen, wo sich die Route von der Strecke Triest-Rijeka abzweigt, die zum Zentrum der Halbinsel führt. Heute ist es das Zentrum der Gemeinde, das sich von Ab-hängen der Učka und Ćićarija und südlich bis Boljunsko polje (Feld von Boljun) erstreckt. Die Siedlung ist voll von neueren Einfamilienhäusern, die in der Nähe von Straßen liegen, aber ohne erkennbare Vertikale des Turms, der uns anderswo in Istrien sofort auf die Mitte des Dorfes hinweisen möchte.Wieso? Um die aktuelle Situ-ation zu verstehen, ist es not-wendig auf den steilen Hängen von Ćićarija zu schauen, Blick auf den Hügeln, wo noch in der Hälfte des 17. Jh. Schloß Mährenfels stand, Sitz der Herrschaft von Lupoglav. Das Schloss befand sich etwa 1,5 km östlich der heutigen Sied-lung.

Schloss BrigidoUngefähr 350 Meter vom Bahn-hof entfernt, im Osten stoßen wir auf der linken Seite auf das alte Gebäude von einer hohen Steinmauer umgeben. Das ist nicht ein altes Mahrenfels sonder ein Landhaus von der

Schloß MährenfelsVom Kastell Brigido folgen wir weiter der Straße noch 100 Me-ter bis zur Kreuzung und dann nach links abbiegen. Nach wei-teren 150 Meter, rechts führt die Straße nach Brest. Etwa 500 m weiter nach Brest, kommt man zu dem örtlichen Friedhof. Aus dem westlichen Eingang zum Friedhof führt der alte Weg bergauf und nach 500 m erreichen wir die Reste von Be-festigungsanlagen Mährenfels. Wir werden bemerken, wie der Wegmancherorts buchstäblich in den Fels gemeißelt ist und manchmal erkennt man regel-mäßig angeordnete Vertiefun-gen, die durch Ochsenkarren verursacht werden.Die erste schriftliche Erwähnung von Lupoglav ist wahrscheinlich eine der Schenkungsurkunde von König Heinrich IV aus dem 1064,dem Namen Lompaga, als Castrum de Lupoglau er-wähnt im Jahre 1264, als der Patriarch von Aquileia es dem Lehen von Paziner Henrik auf-erlegte. Seitdem Lupoglav teil-te das Schicksal der Grafschaft Pazin,zuerst war unter der Herrschaft der Grafen von Go-rica dann unter die Herrschaft des österreichischen Hauses.

Adelsfamilie Brigido, gebaut nach dem sie im Jahre 1634 die Herrschaft von Lupoglav ge-kauft haben und beschlossen, die alte Burg, die sich auf dem Hügel befand verlassen. Brigido war ein österreichi-scher Staatssekretär. Sein Nachfolger und Neffe Pompeo II Brigido war von 1787-1804 Gouverneur und Militärbe-fehlshaber von Triest. Lupoglav war im Besitz von der Familie Brigido bis 1883. Auf seinem Hof haben sie erfolgreich neue Wege der Produktion einge-führt, besonderes in der Tier-haltung, zum Beispiel. Zucht von Merino-Schafe, Schafe und ägyptischen Angoraziegen. Es war ein ideales Modellsystem des Besitzes in dieser Zeit, die istrischen Besitzer schickten ihre Erben hier zu lernen zB. über praktische Aufgaben im Zusammenhang mit der Ver-waltung des Besitzes, über die Landwirtschaft und die ländli-che Wirtschaft, dass sie eines Tages selbst fähige Verwalter sein würden. Auf der anderen Seite, die Grafen Brigido waren bekannt für ihre brutale Stel-lung gegenüber seinen Unter-tanen, die gezwungen wurden, den Aufstand zu heben, wie im Jahr 1847.

In der Befestigung residierten die Kastellane der verschiede-nen Feudalfamilien: Eberstein, Herberstein, Kružić, Sinković i Eggenberg, von denen vie-le knappe historische Daten bewahrt wurden, aber auch einige fast romantische Le-bensepisode. So wurde es von Ana angemerkt, dass die letz-te Erbin der Familie Eberstein mit weniger als 22 Jahre Witwe wurde und der mächtige stei-rischen Kavalier Ernest Lobmig engagierte den jungen Paziner Kapitän Gunter Herberstein, dass er in seinem Namen für die Hand der Kastellanin Ana verlangt. Aber sobald er sie sah, der junge Herberstein hatte ihre Mission vergessen und selbst schlug Anna vor, die gerne annahm. Der verletz-te Kavalier Lobming besetzte am Tag nach der Hochzeit das Schloss, wo die Hochzeit statt-fand und das Brautpaar in der Gefangenschaft ins Schloss Eppenstein wegführte, wo sie ein paar Monate in der Gefan-genschaft gehalten waren, bis endlich unter dem Druck des österreichischen Herzogs Ernst war er gezwungen, sie wieder loszuwerden.

Es wurde auch angemerkt, dass einer der Nachfolger von der Herrschaft von Lupoglav, Georg Herberstein einen Ner-venzusammenbruch in Neu-stadt erlebte, und statt des Helms legte er auf der Kopf einen Sattel und sprang vom Pferd, zwingt ihre Diener, das-selbe zu tun und ihn bis Lupo-glav folgen. Zu seinem Unglück wurde eine ältere Bäuerin schuldig gesprochen, die un-ter Anklage ist, dass die Hexe im Turm geschlossen ist, wo die Vermeidung starb auf dem Scheiterhaufen und wo sie starb und der Verbrennung auf dem Scheiterhaufen vermied. Der berühmteste Spross der Familie Herberstein, die in Lu-poglav über 150 Jahren behielt, ist sicherlich Sigismund Her-berstein (1486-1566) Soldat, Diplomat und Schriftsteller, ein Mann, der wie ein Gesand-ter des Kaisers zweimal nach Russland reiste, und in den Beschreibungen seiner Reisen, die im Jahr 1549 veröffentlicht wurden, und den Europäern zum ersten Mal näherte das ferne Russland. Obwohl in Vi-pava geboren wurde, lebte er gewöhnlich in Wien, Hier ist er für eine Episode aus dem Krieg mit Venedig im Jahre 1510 er-

innert, wenn, als Kommandant der österreichischen Kavalle-rie, gehört, dass die Venezianer Pazin belagern, statt er nach Graz um Hilfe reitet hat er mit seinen 14 Reitern aus Lupoglav gerade nach Pazin gestürmt. Er brach die Belagerung und kon-solidierte die Verteidigung der Stadt und verhinderte, dass Pa-zin zum ersten Mal in die Hän-de von Venedig fällt.

Als Besitzer des Kastells von Lupoglav erwähnt später der Kapitän Peter Kružić, aus Senj, der sich im Krieg gegen die Tür-ken hervortat und starb 1537 als der Kapitän der Verteidigung von Klis. Und am Anfang des 17. Jh. Lupoglavs Kastell war im Ei-gentum von Ivan Sinković auch aus Senj, es bietet einen Schutz vielen Uskoken, unter seiner Führung wurden die benach-barten venezianischen Grenz-gebiete (Roč, Buzet, Rašpor) zerstört. Zehn Jahre nach dem Tod von Sinković wurde die Herrschaft von Ferdinand Graf österreichischen Eggenberg verkauft. Nach seinem Tod wurde der neue Besitzer schon erwähnte Graf Brigido, der ent-schied, um das alte Schloss Mährenfels, auf einem schwer erreichbaren Hügel verlassen.

Lupoglav-Lupogliano

Nicht weit von Šišan bei Pula befindet sich die Svetica, besser bekannt als Monte Madonna (Monte della Madonna). Ein zau-berhafter Hügel mit Überresten antiker Siedlungen und romani-schen Gebäuden. Der Legende nach hat die Heilige vor langer Zeit einem verzweifelten Vater gesagt, wie er seine Tochter vor den Krallen des Drachen der im Dorf wütete, retten kann.

Es ist nicht verwunderlich, dass rund um diesen Hügel viele Ge-schichten über Drachen und übernatürliche Ereignisse ent-standen sind. Vom Hügel Svetica bietet sich ein herrlicher Blick auf die türkisfarbene Kvarner Bucht, umgeben vom zauber-haften Weiß der Felsen und dem satten Grün der Kiefernwälder. Man kann sich leicht vorstellen, wie die alten Bewohner dieser Gegend auf der Svetica standen und die römischen Schiffe beob-achteten, die sich in der nördli-chen Adria bekriegten. Oder wie sie ängstlich auf die Piratenschif-fe blickten, die sich ihnen aus der Ferne näherten.

Jahrhunderte lang diente die Svetica als Wache und Beob-achtungsposten. Vom Hügel aus wurde wachsam auf mögliche Gefahren aus der Kvarner Bucht aufgepasst. Aufgrund dieser strategischen Position errichtete Österreich-Ungarn 1915 auf die-sem Hügel eine Militärfestung mit 310-Millimeter-Kanonen. Die Festung auf dem Hügel Svetica war natürlich Teil der großen Verteidigungsanlage von Pula, dem wichtigsten Militärhafen der österreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie.

Not far from the village of Šišan in the Istrian south, you will discov-er Svetica, also known as Monte Madonna, a magical hill with the remains of an ancient castle set-tlement, and traces of Roman buildings. Legend has it that once upon a time a holy woman (svet-ica in Croatian) told a grieving father how to save his daughter from the grip of an evil dragon that terrorised the village.

It’s no wonder that stories of dragons would come up around this hill. Svetica has one of the most astonishing views, span-ning the turquoise Kvarner Bay surrounded with white rocks and the Mediterranean pine forest. It’s so easy to imagine ancient villagers standing here, watching Roman ships deployed in warfare in the Northern Adri-atic. Or, keeping an eye on the menacing pirates’ ships in the distance, trying to come their way.

For many centuries Svetica was used as a guardhouse, an ob-servatory for dangers coming

from the Kvarner Bay. Its stra-tegic position was key to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, which in 1915. chose it for the construction of a military forti-fication, with 310 mm cannons.

Fort Svetica was part of a much larger fortification system of Pula, at that time the central mil-itary port of the Monarchy. Pu-la’s unique defence system was developed between 1813. and 1918. It covered the wider Pula area, consisting of 26 fortresses, and a number of artillery battal-ions, trenches, and underground tunnels. The role of Fort Svetica was to help protect the military port of Pula, and spot any naval danger coming from the east.

Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1918, Fort Svetica was used as a military facility by the Italian, Yugoslav and Croatian armies respectively. Nowadays, it is used by the local community, several civil associations, as well as hunting and sports clubs.Some years back, Fort Svetica

became part of local exploration routes, and travellers can now visit it on a guided tour. If you de-cide to do that, you will discover a small, but still functional military base under the hill surface. Built during the Cold War as a top se-cret project, this hidden base was used by the Yugoslav People’s Army at the height of its power. It consists of a dormitory for sol-diers, a computer division, a clinic, and a powerful reflector station whose lights reach almost half through the Kvarner Bay. Among military equipment and rooms, you will see the command bunker and spiral stairs leading 20 feet up, into the observatory.

Fort Svetica is the first Croatian underground fortification of this kind that became available to the public. It is a positive exam-ple of military venues reusage, which is a topic of interest in the Istrian south, rich in forts, tun-nels and buildings of this kind. Majority of them are beautifully preserved, standing in hills and islands as a testament to Pula’s rich military past.

Vor einigen Jahren wurde die Festung Svetica in die Tou-ristenrouten aufgenommen, sodass die Besucher nun die Gelegenheit haben, diese bei ei-ner geführten Tour zu erkunden. Sollten Sie sich für einen Rund-gang entscheiden, dann werden Sie unter der Hügeloberfläche eine kleine, aber gut erhaltene Militärbasis entdecken. Diese wurde in den 50er Jahren unter größter Geheimhaltung während des Kalten Krieges gebaut, und von der jugoslawischen Volksar-mee genutzt. Dieser versteckte Stützpunkt besteht aus Zim-mern für Soldaten, einer Com-puterabteilung, einer Ambulanz sowie einer starken Lichtanlage, deren Lichtstrahl fast bis zur Mitte der Kvarner-Bucht reicht. Neben der militärischen Ausrüs-tung und den Räumen gibt es auch einen Kommandobunker

und eine Wendeltreppe, die zum Observatorium führt.

Die Svetica ist die erste unterirdi-sche Festung dieser Art in Kroa-tien, die ihre Türen für Besucher und Touristen geöffnet hat. Sie ist auch ein positives Beispiel für die Wertschätzung militärischer Ein-richtungen im Süden Istriens, wo es auch heute noch zahlreiche Festungen, Tunnel und Verteidi-gungsanlagen gibt. opera Falena can be seen in the sculpture by Mocenni Beck. A theme of sensuality from Abisso underlies the artistic vision of Vedran Šilipetar, who shaped his music bench in oak and corten steel. Človek built the monumental Istrian Wedding, made of two types of stone symbolizing the unhappy love of a couple from nearby Vodnjan, also found in Smareglia’s work.The composer’s Memorial Room in his family home in Pula opened in 2004., on the 150th anniver-sary of his birth. It’s definitely worth a visit, with various letters, photos, scores, audio records and publications inviting explor-ers to get to know the life and work of this grand composer.

Er studier-te in Wien, Graz und Mailand, lebte in Venedig, Triest und Pula. Berühmt wurde er 1903 als seine Oper Oceana an der berühmten Mailänder Scala aufgeführt wur-de. Nach seiner Erblindung im Jahr 1900 verbrachte er mehr und mehr Zeit in der Villa Oceani in Fažana. Einige seiner besten Werke komponierte er in Fažana, Triest und Mailand. Seine Opern Abisso, Falena und Ocea-na haben einen neuen Opernstil, das sogenannte “Theater der Poesie“ eingeleitet. Music trail of Antonio Smareglia Pula-born Anto-nio Smareglia, a notable 19th century opera composer, left an interesting mark in the nearby Fažana. Educated in Vienna, Graz and Milan, he also lived in Venice, Trieste and Pula, rising to fame in 1903, when his Oceana was performed in La Scala, the great opera house in Milan. After going blind in 1900, he started spending more time in Fažana, in villa Oceana. It was during his stay in Fažana, Trieste and Milan that he composed some of his best work. Smareglia’s operas

Abisso, Falena and Oceana are widely considered to be the forefront of a new operatic style called “poetry theater” where music expresses elements of fantasy and the atmosphere of pictorial and poetic, rather than dramatic action. While in Fažana, he lived and created his music near the coast. Today the coastal promenade carries his name and offers a view towards breathtaking Adriatic sunsets. It is also an astounding outdoor museum, boasting five bench-es-sculptures with audio-visual and light effects, all inspired by

the work of maestro Smareglia. This music trail was opened in 2019 to mark the 165th anniversary of his birth and the 90th anniversary of his death. Every human being desires and needs a quiet harbor, so head to Teleferika - the former cable car and the port for the transport of bauxite, which offers a breathtaking view of Rabac. Continue along the shore to Remac bay, and then to cape Sv. Juraj. Beautiful views and scents of Mediterranean herbs will follow you along the entire trail. The vegetation in this area is extremely important because it is one of the few quality holm oak forests declared a protected landscape. After Seničina bay, you’ll come to Prtlog, the place which served as the main port of Labin in ancient, medieval and Venetian times, and where the galleys docked at that time. The highest point of the peninsula once boasted a hill fort from the Bronze Age. On your way you’ll see the remains of an old oil mill (toš, in the local dialect) used for olive oil production, and only five minutes from the trail

Auf dem höchsten Punkt der Halbinsel befand sich schon in der Bronzezeit eine befestigte Siedlung. Der Weg führt Sie hier an einer alten Olivenölmühle vorbei, und nur 5 Minuten vom Weg entfernt liegen die Reste einer alten Kalkbrennerei, in der Brantkalk hergestellt wurde. Auch in Prtlog gab es einst einen kleinen Ladehafen für Bauxiterz, den man noch sehen kann. Doch statt der Galeeren schaukeln heute sanft auf dem Wasser der Prtlog-Bucht die Boote der lokalen Bevölkerung. Millennial Vižula Tausendjährige Vižula Medulin emerges on the southern point of the Istrian peninsula that hides a real historic pearl in its heart - the archaeological site on the Vižula peninsula. Today partially under the sea, this former Roman villa was one of the most breath-taking, largest and most luxurious villas of the antique imperial period on the eastern Adri-atic coast, which, at one stage, also belonged to Crispus, the son of the Emperor Constantine the Great. The western part of the Vižula peninsula hosted the residential part of the villa, whilst warehouses, together with houses for servants and slaves were located to the southeast. There were four terraces gloriously descending towards the sea, with porches oriented toward the endless blue, making a luxurious residency full of orna-ments. The floors of the residence were covered with marvellous mosaics of geometric motifs, multi-coloured marble tiles, and in certain places with a simple ceramic, disposed in the shape of a fish bone. Even the walls were spectacular, covered with marble or painted with frescoes of different colours and motifs. The villa was made up of a set of several elements. Roman thermae were an indispensable part of every luxury antique villa, and those on Vižula were spread over several terraces. Consequently on one of the terraces a pool was found along a long corridor, on the one side open and bordered by pillars, paved with black and white mosaic, while on the other were terraces containing large water tanks that were heated so the tenants of the time could enjoy the heated pool. A private harbour with a 76 metre-long pier was located on the southern part of the peninsula. Due to the rise of the sea

level, the harbour today is below the surface of the sea. However, the villa could be reached by land too, with a road of exceptional quality, with large, regular stone tiles framed by a small wall. The road passed through a natural isthmus called Burle, and along the road a necropolis was also found, along with the cemetery, with nearly five hundred tombs with rich votive gifts such as silver and gold jewellery. The Roman villa at Vižula had almost the same infrastructure as that found today - drainage, sewage, hot water and heated rooms - a luxury that could only be desired at that time. Im Süden der Halbinsel Istrien liegt Medulin, welches in seinem Herzen einen wahren historischen Juwel verbirgt - einen archäologischen Standort auf der Halbinsel Vižula. Heute teilweise vom Meer überschwemmt, war die einstige römische Villa eine der schönsten, größten und luxuriösesten Villas der antiken Kaiserära an der östlichen Küste der Adria, welche in einer Phase auch Chrispus, dem Sohn des Kaiser Kon-stantin dem Großen, gehörte. Auf der westlichen Seite der Halbinsel Vižula befand sich der Wohnteil der Villaresidenz, während sich im Südosten die La-gerräume, sowie auch die Häuser für die Diener und Sklaven befanden. Zum Meer hin führten sogar vier Terrassen hinunter, mit Atrien Richtung offener See gerichtet, somit eine üppige Residenz übervoll an Dekorationen bildend. Die Böden der Residenz

waren mit wunderschönen Mosaiken geometrischer Motive, verschiedenfar-bigen Marmorfliesen, und hier und dort auch von jenen einfachen kerami-schen, in Form von Grä-ten ausgelegt. Auch die Wände der Villa waren spektakulär, bedeckt mit Marmor oder mit Fresken verschiedener Farben und Motive bemalt. Ein Gefüge an mehreren Elementen bildete die Villa. Römische

Therme waren ein unumgänglicher Teil jeder luxuriösen antiken Villa, und jene auf Vižula erstreckten sich ebenfalls über einige Terras-sen, sodass auf einer ein Becken entlang dem langen Flur gefunden wurde, auf einer Seite offen und nur durch Pfosten abgegrenzt, mit schwarzweißem Mosaik gefliest, während sich auf den restlichen Terrassen große Wasserspei-cher befanden, welche erwärmt wurden, sodass die einstigen Bewohner ein beheiztes Becken genossen haben. Am südlichen Teil der Halbinsel befand sich ein privater Hafen mit einem 76 Me-ter langen Anlegesteg. Aufgrund der Anhebung des Meeresspiegels liegt der Hafen heute unter der Meeresoberfläche. Aber der Zugang zur Villa war auch über das Festland möglich, und sogar die Straße war von ausgenommener Qualität, mit großen, regelmäßigen Steinplatten, welche von einer kleinen Mauer umsäumt waren. Die Straße führte über natürliche Beläge, genannt Burle, und entlang der Straße wurde auch eine Nekropole gefunden, ein Friedhof mit fast fünf-

The Best in Europe 2019 list is made by Lonely Planet travel experts who have been trav-elling each corner of the world enjoying many interesting ex-periences that can be found on our planet, for almost 45 years. They shared with their readers useful advices about where are the actual ‚focus points‘ on the continent - from the desti-nations that offer new specific experiences to the places that should still be discovered, till the everlasting favourite des-tinations that have always something new to offer.

One of the travel experts of the leading world travel publisher, speaking about Istria, stated the following: „Whether it’s the heart-shaped peninsula’s

Today, thanks to the expanding European flight connections the access to the Istrian pen-insula is even easier. Start with the history (you can visit the magnificent Roman amphithe-atre in Pula and the UNESCO listed mosaics in Poreč) and continue with visiting some of the beaches and crown it with some modern additions: spring gourmet and cycle tours, music festivals in summer and truffle- hunting excursion in fall.“

The chief editor of Lonely Plan-et, Tom Hall, stated: „Best in Europe 2019 shows European destinations that are worth visiting: from the cultural city-breaks to the impressive land-scapes, attractive gourmet destinations and best places to avoid crowds, there are plenty of experiences made for enjoy-ing all over Europe, right now.“ Relating to this prestigious ac-knowledgement to Istria, he added the following: „Istria has a famous gourmet offer (in-cluding white truffles and wild asparagus) as well as historical charm.“

Once again the gourmet world of Istria caught the eye of con-noisseurs. A group of Italian food critics rated a dozen Is-trian restaurants for the 2019 edition of their notable I Risto-ranti d’Italia guide. Published since 1978 and sold in 110.000 copies, it is highly regarded in Spain, Portugal, France, UK, USA and China.

Although focused on places operating in Italy, they also celebrate restaurants in the neighbourhood. In 2011, they checked out Istria for the first time and reviewed 10 places for their prestigious guide. It was a splendid homage to the culinary art of the nearby Istria, where many Italian traditions still live and thrive.

They evaluate restaurants us-ing the gastro sensibility typi-cal of Italy. Ease of preparation, and freshness of ingredients are their top criteria; the expe-rience of menu, milieu and ser-vice rank high as well. Reviews take the form of narratives

specific for each restaurant. Their legendary Chef’s Hats are used in ranking restaurants on a 1 to 5 scale. Restaurants rated with 1 Chef’s Hat have “a good kitchen”, and 5 hats means “absolutely the best”.

Golden Chef’s Hat, introduced last year, is awarded to the new classics of Italian cuisine. Restaurants and cooks are also honoured with sponsors’ priz-es in several categories, such as Best Pasta of the Year, Best Coffee of the Year and Best Performance of the Year.Die Welt der istrischen Fein-schmecker ist den Top-Exper-ten aufs Neue ins Auge bzw. in den Gaumen gefallen. Obwohl sie sich hauptsächlich mit Restaurants in Italien befas-sen, werden in diesem Restau-rantführers auch Restaurants in Nachbarregionen vorgestellt. So wurden 2011 zum ersten Mal zehn istrische Restaurants vorgestellt und bewertet. Eine großartige Hommage an die Kochkunst des nahe gelegenen Istriens, wo viele italienische Traditionen und Bräuche ge-pflegt werden.Die Restaurants werden nach Kriterien bewertet, die Italiens typische Sensibilität widerspie-gelt. Einfache Zubereitung und Frische der Speisen sind die Hauptkriterien. Das Gesamt-

angebot, der Service und die Erfahrung werden hoch bewer-tet. Jedes Restaurant begleitet eine Bewertung in Form einer einzigartigen Erzählung.
