of the memorable momentsin Arizona’s history:

• March 18, 1901, the ArizonaTerritorial Legislature adoptedthe saguaro cactus blossom asthe official state flower.

• Theodore Roosevelt Dam wasdedicated on May 19, 1911, lessthan a year before Arizona’s state-hood. The massive structure wasthe first multiple-purpose dam,supplying both water and electricpower, to be constructed under theNational Reclamation Act and atthe time, the largest masonry damin the world.

• Arizona became the 48th stateon Feb. 14, 1912, exactly 50 yearsafter the Confederates firstdeclared Arizona a territory.

• On Feb. 26, 1919, the Grand Canyonbecame a U.S. National Park.

• On Nov. 30, 1927, the Apache Trailbetween Phoenix and Rooseveltlake was opened to tourists.

• Pluto was discovered in 1930 at theLowell Observatory in Flagstaffas the ninth planet in our solarsystem. However, in 2006 theplanet was downgraded to “dwarfplanet” status by the InternationalAstronomical Union.

• In 1937, Frank Lloyd Wright pur-chased the plot of desert land thatwould soon become Taliesin Westoutside Scottsdale.

• In 2015, the Super Bowl returnsto the Valley of the Sun!
