RobertParkerDecember20162014CabernetSauvignonEstate:92points2014CabernetSauvignonReserve:92points2014ProprietaryRedCheckmate:93pointsNoneofthese2014sareyetinbottle.The2014CabernetSauvignonEstateshowsplentyoffinesseandeleganceforanorthern-endCabernetfromCalistoga.Loadsofblueandblackfruits,licorice,forestfloorandspiceareallpresentinthismediumtofull-bodiedwinethatexhibitsplentyofpurefruit,realattractiveexuberanceandsuppleness.Drinkitoverthenext10-12years.The2014CabernetSauvignonReservehasabeautifulnoseofblackberriesandraspberrieswithahintofbluefruits.Thetanninsareslightlymorenoticeable,asisthewood.Thisisamediumtofull-bodied,attractivewinethatIactuallylikenomorethantheentry-levelCabernet.Perhapsmorewilldevelopwithbottleage,butitiscertainlyhigh-class,justnotmuchbetterthantheirbasiccuvee.Lastly,the2014ProprietaryRedCheckmateisablendof90%CabernetSauvignonandtherestPetitVerdot,MerlotandCabernetFranc.Thisisdefinitelythestaroftheshow,eventhoughitiseasilythemostexpensiveofthethree.Suppletexture,loadsofblue,redandblackfruits,licorice,incenseandflowerynotesareallpresentinthisfull-bodied,opulent,classic2014todrinkoverthenext15orsoyears.

LyingbetweentheMayacamasRangeonthewestandtheVacaRangeontheeast,theCalistogaAVA(AmericanViticulturalArea)liesatthenorthernmostendoftheNapaValley.FromthefootofMountSt.Helena,theappellationstretchesapproximatelysevensquaremilesbeforebrushingagainsttheStHelena,DiamondMountainandHowellMountainAVAs.Adramaticlandscapewithbothsteepcanyonvineyardsandserenevalleyfloorvineyards,theCalistogaAVAisthemostgeologicallyuniformofalltheareasinNapaValley.Summerdaytimetemperaturesfrequentlyreach100degrees,butcandropbyasmuchas50degreesatnight.Thesetemperatureswings,alongwiththewell-drainedvolcanicsoils,producegrapeswithboththephenolicripenessandbalancingaciditythatconsumerscrave.TheentiretyoftheCalistogaAVAisunderlainbyvolcanicbedrockandsedimentsmoregeologicallyuniformthanotherNapaValleyAVAswithvalleyfloorenvironments.Uniformsoilsthroughouttheregionenablegrowerstocontrolvinequalityandproduceconsistentflavorsandcharacterswithinsmallvineyardblockareasmuchbetter.OfallthesoilseriesinNapaValley,CalistogaAVAhasthehighestpercentageofvolcanictypesoils,whichyieldmoremineralsthatgrapesneedandallowforbetterdrainagewhichisbetterforrootdevelopment.Inaddition,CalistogaAVAhasthemostextremediurnalswinginNapaValleyofallAVAs,meaningthedaytimeandnighttimechangeintempsisverylarge.Havingalargediurnalshiftmeansthegrapescanrelaxandrespireatnightafterawarmday,allowingformoreacidretention;betterovernightrecovery,thusbetterbalancedwines.
