    Make music with new friends from all over St. Louis! Students will participate daily in full string orchestra rehearsals, sectionals, and master classes/special presentations. Three orchestra levels under the direction of CMS orchestra conductors will musically challenge every student. Student musicians in each orchestra will enjoy an exciting and rigorous experience.

    Requirements: At least one year’s experience playing your instrument and reading music (quarter and eighth notes, minimum); consult with your student’s private instructor or school orchestra director to determine readiness for camp. Completion of pre-camp questionnaire needed for placement; questionnaire will be emailed the week of May 15.

  • Chamber Music Encounter (CME)Ages: BY AUDITIONViolin, viola, cello, and piano students through high school

    Professional chamber musicians and CMS faculty well experienced in chamber group settings will coach trios, quartets, and quintets in this wonderful music form where compositions are performed by and written for one player for each part. Guest performers and speakers will share their experience in successful chamber music performance and ensemble development.

    Requirements: String players need a developed vibrato. Students must be at or beyond the following representative minimum skill levels:Violin: Suzuki Book 4-Vivaldi a minor ConcertoViola: Suzuki Book 4-Seitz Concerto #2, 3rd movementCello: Suzuki Book 4-Breval Sonata in C MajorPiano: Clementi or Kuhlau Sonatinas

    Acceptance in the Chamber Music Encounter will be based on audition, instrumentation needs for chamber ensembles (trios, quartets, quintets), and readiness for small ensemble playing. Auditions will be held Saturday, April 3 (2-5 p.m.) and Sunday, April 4 (12-5 p.m.)

    String Camp PackageEnroll in String Orchestra Camp and Chamber Music Encounter and pay a combined tuition of only $480.

    Clazz String IntensiveAges: Beginning to Advanced instrumentalists age 10 and older, with at least five years of playing experience. Audition video required for placement in ensembles and lessons.

    Webster Groves, CMS CenterDates: July 7 – 11Tuition: $400Application Deadline: April 15, 2021

    The Clazz String Intensive is designed to introduce classically-trained string players to the art of improvisation through the pedagogical ideals of jazz and musical languages from other cultures. Students will be exposed to jazz, blues, bluegrass, Celtic, Indian classical, and more.

    ActivitiesStudents will be scheduled in lessons and small combos each day. In the evening there will be masterclasses and jam sessions. The five-day camp will culminate in student solo and combo performances. There will be ample practice time in the morning or to explore St. Louis if you are commuting.

    RepertoireAssignments are based on playing level and prior experience. Tunes for the combos will be emailed to participants in June. All participants are encouraged to learn their parts in advance of the workshop.

    Middle - High School Students

  • composition for a specified instrumental trio with an arsenal of new skills and resources, a recorded performance of your original composition, and new friends!

    Unique features of the CMS Intensive include meeting and working with St. Louis area composers and musicians. Students will utilize the Webster University Department of Music’s computer lab. Students will work in groups according to experience level (from those needing the basics of notation, transposition, and scoring, to students with prior composing experience). All participants must be able to read music and play an instrument or sing. A pre-camp questionnaire indicating experience is mailed the week of June 15th.

    Students must attend the full length of the Intensive for their works to be performed and recorded.

    High School Group Singing Zoom Class with Jennifer Johnson CanoStudents entering grades 9-12 in Fall 2021Two 60-minute sessions per week for three weeks

    In this vocal class for high school teens, renowned artist and mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano will provide a relaxed, positive atmosphere for teen vocalists to learn more about what is specifically involved in singing healthily and well. Basic technique work will focus on posture, breathing, coordination, and singing in English. This class is most suitable to high school singers who may not have experienced voice training before, or those who would like to add an enhanced experience to individual lessons by learning in a group setting, to brush up their skills and technique with the presence and instruction of a world-class singer and teacher.

    Ensembles, master classes, and special events – oh my! Work with expert professional musicians who play your instrument. Past guests and clinicians include members of the St. Louis Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Funky Butt Brass Band, St. Louis Brass Ensemble, St. Louis Symphony Trombone Quartet, Equinox Chamber Players, and Dawn Weber and The Electro Funk Assembly. Special topics classes may feature audition techniques, methods for effective practice, composition, theory, improvisation, and use of technology (programs like Garage Band, Smart Music, and Flip Grid).

    Requirements: One full year of participation in a school band program or one year of private instruction. Auditions to determine placement are on Wednesday, May 19, Thursday, May 20, and Saturday, May 22, 2021.

    Webster Groves, CMS Center June 27-July 2 Tuition: $350 Application Deadline: April 9, 2021 The MOCM Adult Chamber Music Intensive places adult amateur instrumentalists in chamber ensembles of various sizes and instrumentation to work with faculty Player/Coaches. The collaborative faculty have included members of the St. Louis and Boston Symphony Orchestras, the Arianna String Quartet, and other St. Louis area performers and teachers.

    ActivitiesEach ensemble will rehearse online or in person with its coach for a series of sessions over the workshop week, culminating in a performance finale. The Chamber Music Intensive experience also includes events such as group readings, master classes, faculty presentations and concerts, practice and reading sessions, and social events.

    RepertoireIndividuals as well as pre-formed groups are encouraged to apply. Individual participants will be assigned groups and repertoire 6-8 weeks in advance of the workshop. Assignments are based on playing level and prior chamber music experience. Repertoire requests will be granted when possible and ensemble requests are accepted. All participants are encouraged to learn their parts in advance of the workshop.

    Renowned artist and mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano will explore the beautiful facets of music and words. Each session will include group listening time, a discussion of historical context, a comparison of texts set by different composers, and recommendations for further self-learning. Throughout this 6-week course, focus will move from folk song (Kodaly, Niles, Canteloube, Berio, de Falla, Copland), to Shakespeare’s influence on British composers, to the great German pairings of poets and composers (Mörike/Wolf, Goethe/Schubert & Schumann, Brahms/Georg Daumer), to French Mélodie (Apollinaire, Verlaine, Baudelaire, Poulenc, Faure, Debussy, Ravel), and to the American Masters (Samuel Barber, and the Great American Songbook).
