Teen Summer Reading Program: “Beneath the Surface”

Teens, entering grades 6 & up, dig into an all new summer reading program that has been upgraded to include more than just reading. Teens will have the opportunity to earn “badges” by completing tasks such as creating a meal, writing a poem, compos-

ing a song, attending a library program, and many more. The DCL will award prizes for the most badges earned as well as the most creative project.

Summer Reading Program for Kids

Dig Into Reading @ the DCL! Monday, June 24 - Monday, August 12

Dig into reading this summer! You’re encouraged to read (or listen to) the books you want. Record your reading adventures in your very own Book Miner’s Log! Then visit the Library and share the stories you've read with a librarian. A prize will be given out each week to encourage you to explore the world of books. Can it be done? If participants of the Children’s Summer Reading program, “Dig In-to Reading!”, read a combined total of 5,000 books before Monday, August 12, Miss Jenny will volun-tarily dye her hair, but what color will it be? You get to choose!

Kick-Off Party Monday, June 24 @ 3:00 pm

Summer reading begins with crafts, face paint-ing, and more! Parents can learn about our Summer Reading Program, which encourages children to read. Children in preschool through 5th Grade can register for our Children’s Summer Reading Program.

End of Summer Party Monday, August 12 @ 11:00 am

For children in preschool through 5th Grade who are registered for our Summer Reading Program at the DCL! Find out if DCL summer readers reached this year’s goal. No registration necessary for either event.

Donna B from Milk & Cookies brings her interactive music and movement program to the Library! Kids will be provided with their own rhythm instruments, movement scarves, and other surprise props. And after, there will be facepainting! Registration Required.

Flow Circus Monday, July 1 @ 2:00 pm

Performer Paul Miller takes us back to one memorable summer when his eccentric uncle comes to visit. Unlike other adults, Paul’s uncle opens up an exciting new world of play through stories, books, juggling, magic and more. Paul’s comedy juggling and magic show engages audiences of all ages. He’s performed on Disney Cruise Lines, Off-Broadway, and coast to coast. Recommended for ages 3 & up!

Puppets with Pizazz Friday, July 12 @ 2:00 pm

Puppeteer Nancy Sander presents the classic story, “Aladdin.” Bring the whole family and be prepared to giggle! Recommended for ages 3 & up!

MORELAND THE MAGICIAN Friday, July 26 @ 2:00 pm

Recommended for ages 3 & up! Moreland the Magician returns to the

DCL for an all-new show full of magic and humor. Klondike Dave, a gold prospector from the

Old West, is trying to unearth a treasure hidden in the

Library, but will he be able to find it? Attendance is 1st come, 1st served basis.

This program was supported by Federal Library Services and Technology funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.

THE SECRET GARDEN Saturday, August 10 @ 10:00 am

Recommended for all ages! The nationally-touring troupe, Hamstead

Stage Company, presents Frances Hodg-son Burnett’s classic, The Secret Garden.

Orphaned Mary Lennox comes to live

with her gloomy uncle and discovers a garden that will change the lives of everyone involved.

Attendance is 1st come, 1st served basis. This program is sponsored by the Senator John A. DeFrancisco Library Cultural Programming Grant.

FANCY NANCY TEA PARTY

Bonjour (that’s a fancy word for “hello!”) You are invited to join us for a party based

on Jane O’Connor’s Fancy Nancy books!

The MOST Dig Into Dirt Thursday, July 18 @ 2:00 pm

Recommended for all ages! Discover the secrets of the soil and learn what kind of

creatures call it home. Find out why humans should learn to love the stuff, too! This 45 minute interactive

science show is presented by The MOST (Museum of

Science and Technology).

Zoo to You Friday, Aug. 2 @ 11:00 am

Recommended for ages 3 & up! Live zoo animals will visit the Library with an educator

from the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park. Fascinat-ing facts and close-up views of the creatures will be fea-

tured.

ly, cognitively, and emotionally, and incorporates music, dance, relays, games, gymnastics, sports, and other ac-

tivities. Participants are encouraged to wear comforta-

ble sneakers and loose-fitting clothes for exercise.

This lively storytime is appropriate for babies and their caregivers. Come ready to participate and help your child develop essen-

tial early literacy skills as we share books, enjoy music and movement, and sing songs and nursery rhymes. Each session lasts 15 - 20 minutes, followed by playtime.

This fun and active storytime is for toddlers and their caregivers. Encourage their activity by joining us for stories, rhymes, and

Teen Murder Mystery

Friday, August 2 @ 6:00 - 8:00 pm For ages 10 - 16.

Join fellow sleuths and discover who is killed in the library and why. Follow the clues and

test your detective wits. Refreshments served.

Go Beneath the Surface, Beyond Reading for this year’s summer reading program. Teens will earn

badges for a variety of activities they may take part in this summer. Cook a meal, write a poem, compose a song, attend a library program, and more. DCL will award prizes (including tickets to the MOST, to the New York State Fair, and more!) for the most badges earned as well as the most creative project. Teens may still participate in the traditional reading club as well. Teens entering 6th grade and up are invited to register for the program.

Murder Mystery Party

Dusty Death in the West Friday, July 26 @ 7:00 pm One Syracusan rode West in search of his fortune. What he found was

murder. Will he stand accused or will he save the day?

You’re invited to a mystery at the DCL! Look for clues, interrogate suspects, and solve a crime.

For ages 18 & up!

Are you a fan of whodunnits and crime solving? Discover motive, means and opportunity as you set out

to solve the crime. Participants will receive their invita-tions prior to each event; they will discover who they are

upon arrival at the scene of the crime. Additional clues

will be revealed as the evening progresses. There’s plen-ty of time to solve the crime, so be sure to enjoy the pro-

vided refreshments. A good time will be had by all!

Serial Killers

The Zodiac Thursday, June 27 @ 7:00 pm A serial killer stalked California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He dubbed himself “Zodiac.” His identity remains unknown, but his crime spree inspired two movies, Dirty Harry with Clint Eastwood and Zodiac with Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey, Jr.

About the Speaker: Cheryl Pula returns to the DCL for more exciting “moments in

history” programs. She previously presented “Crime Spree,” a

look at famous unsolved mysteries about Lizzie Borden, the

Lindbergh Kidnapping, and Black Dahlia, and “Battle Royale”

about turning points in the Revolutionary, Civil, and Second

World wars.

CNY Racing History

Flora Temple: Queen of the Turf

Tuesday, June 25 @ 1:00 pm Discover the ‘rags-to-riches’ story of the local mare who dominated the mid-1800s racing world, inspir-ing the Stephen Foster song, Camptown Races. Named ‘Queen of the Turf’ by the New York Times, Flora Temple won 92 races and was the first horse to race a mile in 2 minutes, 20 seconds.

Summer Reading for Adults “Groundbreaking Reads!”

The DeWitt Community Library is proud to present the second annual Summer Reading Program for adults. The theme for this year’s program is “Groundbreaking Reads”, and it will run from June 24 – August 12.

Adults are encouraged to keep track of books they read on a reading log and submit a review for a chance to win an e-reader. Each participant will receive a coupon for one free book from our ongoing book sale. Be rewarded for your reading, join in the fun and prove that libraries rock!

we read and discuss some of the best

tales of murder, deceit, and suspense.

What’s bugging your garden? Nothing is as frustrating as having something eat your garden vegetables before you

get to them. Learn how to deal with pests from large ones like groundhogs to tiny ones like aphids and beetles

that can stealthily kill your squash, cucumbers, and more.

About the Speaker: John Allen returns to the DCL for another Garden Tips program!
