The Summergrass Board of Directors is proud to bring you this outstanding week-end of music, workshops, music camps, and just plain fun at this nostalgic agricultural museum set-

ting! We proudly bring authentic bluegrass music to the Southern California area along with a multi-tude of other festival activities to create a memorable Summergrass musical extravaganza. Summergrass does not wish to impose too many rules and regulations or to limit anyone’s

enjoyment of the festival, but in order to ensure that EVERYONE has as much fun & comfort as

possible, here are a few items you should know…

Chairs: If a chair is vacant during any stage show it is perfectly ok to sit in it. If your chair is

occupied upon your return, please kindly ask the person to give it up. You may leave your chair

there for the entire festival without having to relocate it every morning.

Audience Area: For everyone’s safety, please do not sit in the fire lane directly in front of the

stage. And no smoking, no pets, no loud chitchat during performances (please respect the

people sitting around you who are here to enjoy the music). Umbrellas are not allowed as they

block other’s views. Dancing, hula hoops, etc. is ok, but in designated area in the back of the

audience area (again, be courteous to your neighbors). Videotaping or taping of any kind during

the music performances is not permitted. No glass containers, alcohol or drugs in audience

area. Any person clearly under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be immediately escorted

from the festival grounds with no refund.

Campground Area: No parking in designated fire lanes. Pets OK in the campground area

only. Owners must control them, keep them from barking and perform P.P.P.U. (Pet Poop Pick

Up). Generators may be used from 6 am to 10 pm. NO Campfires. Sorry, no showers available

this year.

IBMA’s 9-time winner of Fiddle Player of the Year and 4-time winner of Instrumental Group of the Year, Michael Cleve-

land & Flamekeeper returns to Summergrass for a second time! Michael and his talented band present a program of

tight vocals, and blistering instrumentals. This band brings dynamic traditional bluegrass that will leave the audience

standing on their feet! Summergrass proudly bring back this bluegrass phenom!

SPECIAL CONSENSUS Summergrass welcomes Special Consensus back to our stage! Based in the "hills of Chicago", Special C presents a repertoire of traditional bluegrass standards, original compositions, and contemporary songs from other musical genres. And they have just returned from a tour of Europe Special Consensus is Greg Cahill on banjo, on guitar, Rick Faris on mandolin, guitarist Dustin Benson and bass player Dan Eubanks on bass. Oh brother, that’s good bluegrass! Their CD Scratch Gravel Road was nominated for a Grammy in 2013.

BLUEGRASS ETC. Summergrass proudly welcomes back Bluegrass Etc., known world-wide for their stellar music and stage antics. They are both entertain-ing and masters of their instruments. Dennis Caplinger on banjo and

fiddle (and anything else he wants to play), is joined by John Moore who plays a stunning guitar and mandolin, and the legendary Steve Spurgin on bass. Together they perform bluegrass (and etc.) to the delight of their audiences. It’s a real treat to have these hometown

heroes return again to our stage!

DELLA MAE Summergrass is very proud to present Grammy nominee Della Mae in 2014! Della Mae has become a sensation in the music world, as this Boston-based combo mines time-honored elements to create music that's unmistakably fresh and contemporary. Della Mae is Kimber Ludiker on fiddle, Celia Woodsmith on vocals, guitarist Court-ney Hartman, bassist Shelby Means, and mandolin player Jenni Lyn Gardner. In the words of Mike Marshall, “These gals can get down and aren’t messing around.” Their newest album, This World Oft Can Be is a 2014 Grammy nominated Bluegrass Album. A must see show!

SONORAN DOGS Formed in 2011, the Sonoran Dogs have exploded upon the

Arizona bluegrass scene, performing at festivals all over the Southwest. The group is made up of seasoned veterans that

play a collection of traditional bluegrass standards, new-grass, Americana, and original compositions. Their high-energy and

improvisational approach makes for a stellar and dynamic Sun-day show. Summergrass welcomes the Sonoran Dogs!

FRONT COUNTRY Front Country is a collective of the Bay Area’s finest young acoustic talent. Their repertoire rapidly expanded when in Janu-ary of 2012 Front Country won the prestigious RockyGrass band competition and as a result performed on the RockyGrass stage in 2013! Also experienced teachers, they will be our Summer-grass Kids Camp instructors in 2014. Don’t miss these talented young pickers as they debut on our Summergrass stage!

DID YOU KNOW??? John Mailander is an alumni of our very own Summergrass Kids Camp and has also been an instructor at the camp. Summergrass is proud of you, John!

VIRTUAL STRANGERS Celebrating 22 years together, the Virtual Strangers were formed in 1992 in Napa, CA. The Strangers consist of Mike Tatar Sr. on banjo, Jon Cherry on mandolin, Kit Birkett on guitar, and Yvonne Tatar on bass. Their sound is a mix of traditional songs along with more progressive material and their own brand of Stranger antics thrown in just for fun. Don’t miss this San Diego icon!

MOLLY TUTTLE & JOHN MAILANDER Molly Tuttle & John Mailander are individually renowned mu-

sicians currently residing in Boston. Both hailing from California, they began playing together while attending the Berklee Col-

lege of Music. John & Molly perform an honest and soulful mix of original and traditional music, with a deep respect for the past while also looking toward the future. See this fabulous

young duo featured on Sunday only! .

PRAIRIE SKY Prairie Sky is Avery Ellisman on fiddle & mandolin, Ramona

Ault on guitar, Dwight Worden on bass & fiddle, and Jeff Smith on guitar. This group, showcasing some familiar faces, was

very well received at Bluegrass Day at the Fair and other local events. Expect stellar vocals from Ramona Ault and Jeff Smith,

great three and four part harmonies, and impressive instrumentation. See them Saturday morning!

SWEET TIDINGS GOSPEL JAM Sweet Tidings Gospel Jam is comprised of Kimberly Conley, David Dickey II, Diana Hergert, Don Hergert, and Marc Nelissen. They present hymns and traditional gospel music with emphasis on Americana roots gospel done jam-style. Fans describe Sweet Tidings as “happy, joyful, charming, new and fresh.” Be sure to see them on Sunday morning!

A Southern California band with a Tennessee sound, Shirthouse is made up of Rich Craig on banjo, Peter Lauterbach on mandolin/ guitar/ fiddle, Conley Robinson on guitar, Len Claesson on bass and Rob Lewallen on guitar/ mandolin. With strong vocal harmonies they frequently rework songs from several genres into a bluegrass blend. With this musical prowess and their tight five part harmonies, make sure

you see Shirthouse Band!

RUSTY GAIT Rusty Gait is a San Diego North County band focused on

bluegrass, western swing and old time music. The name Rusty Gait connotes both an old rustic metal gate and a

dance gait, both swinging with "a bit of a creak." Their eclectic set list delights with foot-tapping rhythms, long-forgotten lyrics and fiddle tunes. James Rust on mandolin, Dave Collins plays fiddle, Bill Frisbie on guitar, Lance Gucwa on bass, and Steve

Dame on banjo. Check 'em out!

Summergrass 2014 once again is proudly offering Kids Camp during the festival! Kids Camp attendees are kids between 6 and 16 who come to camp at all levels of experience. Each day features three hours of music fun, including instrument classes, performance groups, and a festival mainstage performance on Sunday! It’s a great experience where kids hone their musical chops, meet friends, and have a musical blast! Summergrass is very proud to bring the young and talented Front Country as our lead instructors for 2014.

Great Workshops at Summergrass 2014 Get Acquainted Jam—Start the festival off right with some

jamming and attend the popular Get Acquainted Jam led by

Corky Shelton. It happens Friday night at 6 pm in the

workshop stage area.

New Slow Jam Workshops— Led by pros Janet Beazley and

Chris Stuart, this great new workshop is scheduled twice —

Friday at 7 pm, Saturday at 6 PM. They will combine jamming

techniques, vocals, humor and written materials to teach

novice players the art of slow jam.

Meet the Band - Summergrass 2014 is scheduling two Meet

the Band workshops this year. On Saturday at 5 pm head

over to the workshop area to meet Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper for a question and

answer session. And on Sunday at 1 PM meet the Sonoran Dogs. Get those questions and

cameras ready!

Sugar Bear the Clown —Hey Kids, Sugar Bear the Clown will be here to offer some

great facepainting for you! Meet Sugar Bear at 2 PM on Friday and 11 AM on Saturday in

the Assembly Bldg. Get some stylin’ designs!

Songwriting for Kids — Calling all kids! Learn to write a song at these workshops led by Joy

Williams happening at the Assembly Bldg. at 4 pm on Saturday for session #1, and 1:30 pm

on Sunday for session #2. Kids, you can be a songwriter!

All Things Banjo—Meet Greg Cahill and Mike Tatar Saturday at 3 pm in the workshop area to

learn just what makes the banjo the coolest instrument in the band.

Shape Note Singing– What is that? It’s a unique way of reading and singing music that

started back in 1801. Attend and learn more about this time-honored tradition at 10 AM

Sunday.

Chapel Service with the Hot Rod Preacher—On Sunday at 8 AM under the big green

parachute the Hot Road Preacher Ralph Provos & the Front Porch Music Preservation Society

will host an inspiring nondenominational chapel service for all.

Mandolin Workshop—Meet Saturday at 1 PM at workshop stage with Mark Miracle (Sonoran

Tuesday Music Nights: free, open to members and the general public, offering live bluegrass music beginning each Tuesday night at various locations throughout the county. Adult Bluegrass Boot Camp

The Summergrass Board of

Directors proudly offered our

annual Bluegrass Boot Camp

for intermediate to advanced

adult players in 2014. This

year’s camp took place for four hours on

Friday, August 15th. Four classes were

taught by Dennis Caplinger, John Moore,

Mark Miracle and Greg Cahill. Each year the

Boot Camp tuition includes professional in-

struction, and all instruction materials.

Class sizes are limited to 10 students, giv-

ing students more access to their instruc-

tor. If you’ve attended Boot Camp, congrat-

Jam Crawl—What’s that? Special to bluegrass music is the art of jamming. Jamming is basically de-fined as “2 or more musicians making music together but not an official band.” And at any given time, but mostly at night, there are numerous spontaneous jam sessions that occur throughout the festival grounds. Tra-ditionally these jams occur in the camping area after the nightly mainstage shows. So, in order to let Summergrass fans experience this jamming phe-nomena, we have placed a campground map here below and given you

some indications (see musical note icon*) where some jams have been seen in the past couple of years. There are no guarantees these will happen again, but you just never know. You can be a part of the nightly Jam Crawl by strolling through in the campground each night and experiencing these jam sessions. Jam Crawl

brings out the pickers and the grinners that keeps the Summergrass fun going on!

The Loar Grassroots F Series Mandolin is hand-assembled in The Loar design studios. The Loar has a hand-carved solid spruce top and hand-carved fig-ured maple back and sides.

Deering Goodtime package - Local

banjo maker, Deering Banjos, has donated a Goodtime
