AGJA Elects New Leadership at 2010 AGJA Lone Star ClassicDuring the recent 2010 American Gelbvieh Junior

Association (AGJA) Lone Star Classic, junior members elected a new AGJA Board of Directors. The Lone Star Classic was held July 4-10 in Bryan-College Station, Texas.

Newly elected directors, who will serve a two year term, are Cole Buffo, Lansing, Kan., John Shearer, Canton, Kan., and Van Tucker, Portis, Kan. Justin Taubenheim, Amherst, Neb., was re-elected to a second term.

The newly elected officers of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association are as follows: President Seth Arp, Arlington, Wisc.; Vice President Dustin Aherin, Phillipsburg, Kan.; Vice President of Leadership Development Justin Taubenheim, Amherst, Neb.; Secretary Janelle Hayek, Clutier, Iowa; Treasurer Britney Volek, Highmore, S.D.; and Ex-Officio Kyle Kendrick, Palmyra, Mo. Additional director is Andrew Lindgren, Atlanta, Ill. The retiring directors were Keaton Kendrick, Palmyra, Mo., and Katlynn Sullivan, Robertsdale, Ala.

Accepting Regional Show BidsThe AGJA Board of Directors is accepting bids to host

the 2011 AGJA Western and Eastern Regional Shows. If your state association is interested in hosting one of these events, please send your bid to Dana Stewart at danas@gelbvieh.org by October 1. The bid should include possible dates, locations, and goals such as providing meals or bedding. AGJA will give the regional show host association $750 to use towards facilities. Regional show hosts are responsible for securing facilities, judges for shows and contests, awards and any event hospitality. AGJA will provide contest materials, staff assistance during the show, and management of the show program.

Gelbvieh World Photo Contest Theme Announced The theme for the 2011 Twister Classic Special Gelbvieh World category will be “Seasons.” The photo should capture the spirit of a season. For example, a fall season photo may have colorful trees in the background of grazing cattle, or a winter photo may capture an icy or snowy scene. Entries will be judged during the Twister Classic so get started now and capture the seasons all year long!

State Presidents: We need your help! AGJA is currently updating our AGJA State Advisors database to help state associations stay better informed. If you are your state association’s president, please send us your advisor’s name. Because we are starting from “scratch” please don’t assume that we have your information. Also, please include a list of your state officers and remember to update AGJA with new officers when you hold your elections. If you’re not your state’s president, feel free to check with them or me to know if the information has been reported. Thanks for your help - this info will help us better serve you!

Regional Scholarship Opportunity for AGJA Members The Jimmy Christopher Memorial Scholarship will award up to 2 scholarships to deserving AGJA members. The scholarship was started to honor Jimmy Christopher, former herdsman for Bar None Gelbvieh, who lost a battle with cancer. The scholarship is open to AGJA high school seniors or college students who reside east of the Mississippi River. Applications are due November 1 and can be downloaded from the junior's page on the AGA website at www.gelbvieh.org

Junior Classic Photos Are Online Looking for photos from this summer’s AGJA Lone Star Classic? Official photos along with several candids are available at http://agja.smugmug.com Photos are categorized by contests and days. Smugmug will allow users to view and download photos for free or prints may be ordered through the smugmug site.

Mark Your Calendars It’s never too early to start making plans for the 2011 AGJA Twister Classic in Kearney, Neb. The classic will be hosted by the Kansas and Nebraska Gelbvieh Junior Associaitons. The week-long event, July 3-8, will be held at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds. For a sneak peak at the facilities, log onto www.buffalocountyfaigrounds.com.

Many leaders have certain traits and perform certain tasks that allow them to be respected by other individuals. If you would like to become a respected leader at your school, whether at your high school or college, then you need to be knowledgeable about what it takes to be a good leader. Keep the following in mind in order to become a successful leader at your school.

Know your strengths. In order to be a good leader, you need to know your strengths. Knowing your character strengths enables you to select environments that allow you to express and develop them. If you love helping people and are a religious person, then you may consider being a leader in campus ministry. If you have a passion for writing and like working in a team setting, consider becoming a leader on your school's newspaper staff. If you are a people person and want to work for the common good of your school community, become involved in your school's student government.

Gain experience. You may encompass all the attributes that a good leader should have, but if you do not have experience in the area in which you would like to become a leader, then you will not be viewed as a knowledgeable leader among other students. If you want to become the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, you'll have to start at the bottom and gain experience. This holds true for practically every leadership position at your school.

Work well with people. In order to be a good leader at your school, you need to be able to work well with other

people. Good leaders exude superior interpersonal skills. You should be able to listen to others, communicate well, establish trust, ask questions to stimulate thinking, and develop a sense of teamwork. To demonstrate your interpersonal skills, you should go around your campus and meet new people. Talk with them about school issues and listen to what they have to say. This will help you establish a sense of trust among your peers.

Be optimistic. Leaders must be optimistic. When faced with a setback, optimists don't give in to feelings of helplessness. They maintain their focus. In whatever area of interest you have at your school, always remain optimistic in any situation that comes your way. This will show other individuals that you can be counted on in times of need.

Be willing to take action. Leaders create a vision, set goals that embody that vision, and develop plans that lead to their goals. Don't just talk about what you want to do once you have a leadership position on campus; take action to get it accomplished.

Student leadership is important for schools to have because, within the schools, there are hundreds to thousands of students who come from different backgrounds and have different beliefs and values. Students need leaders who they can identify with and count on. When considering a leadership role, make sure you are equipped to handle whatever comes your way.
