Lioness Golda Meir and the Nation of Israel Francine KlagsbrunNow in paperback, the award-winning biography of the iron-willed leader,chain-smoking political perative, and tea-and-cake-serving grandmother whobecame the fourth prime minister of Israel. Golda Meir was a world figure unlike any other. Born in tsarist Russia in1898, she immigrated to America in 1906 and grew up in Milwaukee, wherefrom her earliest years she displayed the political consciousness andorganizational skills that would eventually catapult her into the inner circles ofIsrael's founding generation. Moving to mandatory Palestine in 1921 with herhusband, the passionate socialist joined a kibbutz but soon left and was hiredat a public works office by the man who would become the great love of herlife. A series of public service jobs brought her to the attention of DavidBen-Gurion, and her political career took off. Fund-raising in America in 1948,secretly meeting in Amman with King Abdullah right before Israel's declarationof independence, mobbed by thousands of Jews in a Moscow synagogue in1948 as Israel's first representative to the USSR, serving as minister of laborand foreign minister in the 1950s and 1960s, Golda brought fiery oratory, plainspoken appeals, and shrewd deal-making to the cause to which she haddedicated her life--the welfare and security of the State of Israel and its people. As prime minister, Golda negotiated arms agreements with Richard Nixonand Henry Kissinger and had dozens of clandestine meetings with Jordan'sKing Hussein in the unsuccessful pursuit of a land-for-peace agreement withIsrael's neighbors. But her time in office ended in tragedy, when Israel wascaught off guard by Egypt and Syria's surprise attack on Yom Kippur in 1973.Analyzing newly available documents from Israeli government archives,Francine Klagsbrun looks into whether Golda could have prevented that warand whether in its darkest days she contemplated using nuclear force.Resigning in the war's aftermath, she spent her final years keeping a hand innational affairs and bemusedly enjoying international acclaim. Klagsbrun'ssuperbly researched and masterly recounted story of Israel's founding mothergives us a Golda for the ages.

AWARDS: Winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book Award/Everett Family FoundationBook of the Year. Semi-finalist for the 2018 Plutarch AwardSUBJECT: Golda has been the subject of an Emmy Award winning biopic and theTony-nominated Golda's Balcony. She has been portrayed by Ingrid Bergman, JudyDavis, Anne Bancroft, Valerie Harper, and Tova Feldshuh.NEWLY OPENED ARCHIVES: Klagsbrun's fluency in Hebrew enabled her personallyto consult newly opened Israeli government archives. She also accessed formerlyclassified U.S. government files of Nixon and Kissinger.

Casting into the Light Tales of a Fishing Life Janet MessineoA moving, inspiring portrait of making a dream come true--the (unsentimental)education of a champion surfcaster (catching fish by casting a line from theshoreline). The midnight (and early morning) tales of a young woman hell-bent onfollowing her dream and learning the mysterious and profound sport--and theart, of surfcasting on the small, legendary island of Martha's Vineyard, breakingthrough the strictly enforced male-bastion of fishing life to become aworld-class sportsman at a time when few women fished. Janet Messineo writes of mastering surfcasting during the daylight andstruggling with it on the beaches at night ... She writes of the Vineyardfishermen she's fished with and the fishing women who've forged the path forothers. She describes the unspoken "fishing ethic" and the age-old secrecybehind fishing techniques, lures and baits, fishing locations, and writes of herown favorite spots on the island and on Chappaquiddick, of her Derby yearsand dreams of catching that prize-winning elusive striper; about acquiring, notonly the skill of hooking and landing a big fish, but the skill of finding them. Full of adventure and daring--a rich portrait of following one's vision and heart.MARKET: There are roughly 48 million recreational fisher guys and gals in the US today, and more than 128 surfcaster clubs and associations, 80 devoted to women fishermanalone, with more than 12 major magazines devoted to saltwater fishing from the shore.100 magazines cover surfcasting.AUTHOR: Janet Messineo is a modern master of the sport. In addition to surfcasting, shewrites a fishing column, The Fishing Report, for the Martha's Vineyard Times (17,000copies weekly; 4 million hits per year; 13.1 million page views; readership 30% on-island;70% off-island) and is a fish taxidermist. She lectures and holds seminars on surf fishing, and has been written about by both the national and regional press, including the NYTimes, the Boston Globe, the MV Gazette, various magazines (she appears on the coverof the September 2018 issue of The Fisherman), and books (READING THE WATER, RobertPost; ON THE RUN David DiBenedetto, NEW ENGLAND STRIPERS, etc.) Her book is filledwith not only her own personal story of learning the craft of surfcasting, but also withfishing facts, tips, advice and with twenty of the author's favorite fish recipes.TIMING: We'll be out in time for summer fishing derbys, including the Martha's VineyardStriped Bass and Bluefish Derby, in existence since 1946, and now the largest bass andbluefish tournament in the world, (it takes place annually for 5 weeks from September toOctober)--the author is on the board. The Martha's Vineyard Derby attracts more than5000 fisherman from across the US, as well as from England, Italy, China, Russia, etc.FOR THOSE WHO DON'T FISH: Messineo's book will inspire readers to follow their dreams,no matter how insurmountable, lonely, or full of sacrifice.ISLAND TIME: Martha's Vineyard is host to 100,000 visitors a year. Our book offers a richportrait of life on the island that will appeal to many of those who visit.MORE THAN JUST A FISH TALE: A tale of obsession and rebirth--how the author'sdetermination--mental, physical, and spiritual need--to fish helped to free her from drugsand alcohol. TAXIDERMY! Messineo's study and eventual mastery of this craft adds to the charm andcaptivating quality of the book. Her taxidermy fish are being put on permanent exhibitionby the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society at its new museum. FOR READERS who loved the story of facing the challenges of nature in Wild, Into ThinAir, or Tracks, about following your dreams, for a goal not everyone understands...for thereaders of sports fishing books.

The Body in Question A Novel Jill CimentFrom the author of Heroic Measures ("Brave, generous, nearly perfect"--L.A. Times), Act of God, and (with Amy Hempel), The Hand That Feeds You ("An unnerving, elegant page-turner"--Vanity Fair), a spare, masterful novel about a shockingmurder trial, a sequestered jury, and an affair between two of the jurors. The place: central Florida. The situation: a sensational murder trial involvinga rich, white teenage girl--a twin--on trial for the horrific murder of her toddlerbrother, and the sequestered jury deciding her fate. The setting: a utilitarianmarble cube of a courthouse and the court-appointed motel off the interstate. Two of the jurors: Hannah, a married 52 year-old former Rolling Stone,Interview Magazine photographer of rock stars and socialites and Graham, a 41year-old anatomy professor, sequestered (she, Juror C-2; he, F-17) at theEcono-Lodge off I-75. As the shocking and numbing details of the crime are revealed during thetrial and the nights play out in a series of court-financed meals (Outback SteakHouse; Red Lobster; Domino's pizza delivery), Hannah and Graham fall into afurtive affair, keeping their oath, as jurors, never to discuss the trial. Duringdeliberations the lovers learn they are on opposing sides of the case andrealize that their fellow jurors are wise to their affair. After the trial, as Hannahreturns home to her husband, the case explodes. The public becomes outragedat a jury that seems to have convicted the wrong twin, and at a judge who hasreceived an anonymous handwritten letter about a series of sexual encounters("I feel it is my duty as a juror and a citizen to report that two of my fellowjurors had sexual contact on more than seven occasions during our nights atthe motel..."). Hannah's "one last dalliance before she is too old" takes onprofoundly personal and moral consequences, as the novel moves to itsaffecting, powerful and surprising conclusion.

Ciment's new novel, The Body in Question, written simply, sparingly, stripped ofexcess, is a tale on the nature of hope, despair, loss, and rebirth. Ciment's last novel, The Hand That Feeds You, co-written with Amy Hempel ("A twisty, unsettling thriller"--The New York Times); (hardcover, 7,000); (paperback, 30,000).The highly acclaimed Heroic Measures ("If ever there was a book I would nominate forbestseller-dom it's Heroic Measures...I loved every page."--Ann Patchett), made into amovie (5 Flights Up) with Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman. The critical embrace of Act of God ("Laugh-out-loud funny...thorny and trenchant...from start to finish, it'sinvigoratingly unpredictable."--Michael Upchurch, Seattle Times; "A darkly comic jewelof a novel"--Jan Stuart, Boston Globe) and The Tattoo Artist ("a fever dream fromwhich I did not wish to wake...beautifully written...Fantastic!"--Alice Sebold).

Now, she brings her reader along onher journey across Great Britain and parts of Continental Europe, introducingus to the paleontologists, archaeologists, fishermen, and fellow Doggerlandenthusiasts she meets along the way. The Memory Police A Novel Yoko OgawaA deft and dark Orwellian novel about the terrors of state surveillance, from theacclaimed author of The Housekeeper and the Professor On an unnamed island off an unnamed coast, things are disappearing. First, animals and flowers. Then objects--ribbons, bells, photographs. Then, bodyparts. Most of the island's inhabitants fail to notice these changes, while thosefew imbued with the power to recall the lost objects live in fear of themysterious "memory police," who are committed to ensuring that thedisappeared remain forgotten. When a young novelist realizes that more thanher career is in danger, she hides her editor beneath her floorboards, andtogether, as fear and loss close in around them, they cling to literature as thelast way of preserving the past. Part allegory, part literary thriller, The MemoryPolice is a stunning new work from one of the most exciting contemporaryauthors writing in any language.
