KNIGHT TIME MESSAGESMessage from the President, David Lachiondo

Over a year ago, we embarked on a process to map Bishop Kelly High School’sfuture. A planning committee of over 60 members representing all of our stakeholdergroups convened to assess the current state of the school through a series of interviewswith parents, patrons, priests, pedagogues and pupils. This effort resulted in the mostcomprehensive document written for the school since its start in 1964. With the vision

statement “Bishop Kelly High School, A Catholic Community of Learners and Believers” as its centraltheme, the strategic plan establishes these eight goals for the next five years:

• We live our Catholic identity.• We achieve academic excellence.• Our faculty, staff and administration model a professional learning community.• Our facilities and technology support an effective learning environment• Our financial resources provide for student access and success.• Our school climate supports and complements our vision.• Our image portrays our vision.• Continuous improvement guides our strategic planning.

Each of these goals has specific implementation strategies that will actualize their attainment and keyperformance indicators to measure the outcomes. Look for progress reports in future issues of The Roundtable.God bless you all.

Message from the Principal, Robert R. WehdeAs a son of a carpenter, I learned at an early age to measure twice and cut once.

At Bishop Kelly High School we have completed our measurement with the “Bishop Kelly High School Strategic Plan 2005-2010”, and look forward to cutting a tremendous future.

I look forward to overall institutional improvement in areas of innovativeeducational opportunities for our students at Bishop Kelly; facility and technology that will complementour effective learning environment; development of additional finance resources in fulfilling our mission;and improved communication of our mission and vision to the outside world.

Our past has been decorated with many wonderful individuals and outstanding accomplishments.I look forward to that tradition into the 21st Century.

As Bishop Kelly begins its41st year, the list of its benefactorswho have ensured the school’ssurvival continues to grow. Oneof the school’s largest benefactors,however, remains a mystery tomany people. For thirty years,the Bishop Kelly Foundation hasbeen providing annual income tothe high school to help holddown tuition costs, provideaccess for all students, and helpwith capital improvements andoperational expenses.

As early as 1972, BishopKelly was struggling to increaseenrollment and hold the line ontuition increases while still meetingall its financial obligations. Theprincipal at the time, FatherReginald Wilson, resisted anysuggestion that the school mightclose, and initiated a scholarshipdrive to help families who wantedto send their children to BishopKelly. In 1975, he conceived ofthe idea of the Bishop KellyFoundation and recruited thirteenprominent Boiseans, bothCatholic and non-Catholic, tohelp him secure the financialfuture of the school. Since itsincorporation as a private Idahonot-for-profit in 1976, theFoundation has contributedmore than $4.2 million toBishop Kelly High School. The

Foundation is managed by anExecutive Board and 25 volunteerDirectors, men and women,Catholic and non-Catholic, whoare dedicated to ensuring the longterm success of Bishop KellyHigh School in our community.

The Foundation’s 2005 contribution of $324,000 was 7%of the school’s total 2005-2006budget. About two thirds of thisgrant came from the proceeds ofthe Foundation’s annual fund-raiser, the Winner’s Choice dinnerand auction, and the rest camefrom investment income on theendowment.

“When we started theWinner’s Choice auction, it wasthe second charity auction inBoise,” said Julie Lliteras (’67), theFoundation’s executive director.While the Winner’s Choice

auction remains one of the premier auction events in Boise,there are now hundreds of charityauctions and the market is saturated. “We are too dependenton the auction for the annualgrant the school needs to operate,”says Lliteras. “We cannot expectthe auction proceeds to continueto grow forever.”

The endowment stands atalmost $4 million today. “Tocontinue to meet the current andfuture needs of the school, weare going to have to increase ourendowment,” said Rebholtz. The current Board of Directorsis committed to honoring theintent of the founding members,which was to help meet BishopKelly’s immediate needs andensure its long term financialsecurity. Soon after his electionas president of the Foundation,Rebholtz noted the growth inthe school’s historical annualgrant request and said, “The dayis coming soon when we will notbe able to meet the school’sneeds.” Under his leadership andthrough detailed study, theFoundation has established agoal of growing the endowmentto $10 million by 2010. Actionto accomplish that end is progressing.

Today, Robert RebholtzJr. (’82), president of theBishop Kelly Foundation,continues the tradition ofleading a diverse and unified group of people inproviding superior fund-raising and investmentexpertise toward growingand sustaining BishopKelly High School.

“Good is the enemy of great”is the opening statement of JimCollins’ 2001 national bestseller“Good to Great,” a work thatexamines why some companiesmake the leap to greatness andothers don’t. For the last year, abroad group of Bishop Kellystakeholders have been developinga five-year plan that will becomethe blueprint for Bishop Kelly’snear future.

“There are things we do very,very well … ,” says Dr. DaveLachiondo, Bishop Kellypresident, “… and there arethings we can do better.” OurStrategic Plan, approved by theBoard of Governance inSeptember 2005, is the blueprintfor significant institutionaladvancement over the next fiveyears. “Bishop Kelly has much tobe proud of, but we cannot reston past success, so we are on apath to take this institution tothe next level”, said Lachiondo.

Our strategic planning processbegan on December 23, 2004when we were fortunate to securethe services of a Bishop Kelly pastparent, Dr. Kathy Hagler, to guideus in this process. Dr. Hagler isnationally recognized as anauthority on quality, planningand organizational coaching.

We immediately set to workcreating a planning committee of sixty people representing all ofour very diverse stakeholders,both internal and external. The committee had membersrepresenting our parents, alumni,benefactors, diocesan staff andreligious, the Bishop KellyFoundation, the Board ofGovernance, outside secondaryand university level educators,and local business andcommunity leaders. Planningcommittee membership wasweighted to provide influencerelative to stakeholders’ vestedinterest. Students and faculty had the highest representation,with nine members each.

Together these sixty peoplepersonally conducted 400 face-to-face peer interviews regardingBishop Kelly High School usinga common questionnaire. As aresult, we received 8000 specificcomments, each of which weretyped on a color coded indexcard representing the stakeholdergroup that produced that input.While not everyone could beinterviewed, the data that wasreceived was so comprehensivewe are confident no stone wasleft unturned.

data all at once, except maybewhen I facilitated this process atthe Miami International Airportand we interviewed everypassenger we could in theterminal,” said Dr. Hagler. “I wasoverwhelmed when I walked inthe room,” said Julie Lliteras ofthe planning committee meetingheld March 31st at Risen ChristCatholic Community. The wallsof the gathering room werecovered with 132 large wallcharts holding 8,000 color-codedindex cards.

In subsequent meetings, theplanning committee distilled thatdata into common themes. Thenumber of data points in eachtheme indicated how strongly itwas felt. The coding thatindicated the source of thecomment indicated how broadlyit was felt. “The texture that isavailable from this data isastonishing,” said MarkJaszkowski, BK Director ofDevelopment. “We not only seehow many people share anopinion by the number of similarinputs, but since they are codedas to what constituent groupprovided the comment, we also see how broadly ornarrowly the view is held acrossour constituent groups.” One significant outcome of this

data was an accurate assessmentof our current situation.

In a parallel process, the datacollected was used by the planningcommittee to develop a vision ofthe future for Bishop Kelly.When the data compilation wascomplete, we had an accurateview of where we are now and avision of where we wanted to bein the future. The final step wasthen to build goals, strategies andactions to move us from ourcurrent situation to our visionover the next five years.

The Strategic Plan containsour vision, our mission, ourbeliefs, and the goals, strategiesand actions we will pursue overthe next five years to movetoward our vision. A copy of theStrategic Plan is available off thehome page of: www.bk.org.

We are veryfortunate tohave Dr.Kathy Hagler,President ofHagler &Associates,

facilitating our strategic planningprocess. She has a PhD. in HigherEducation Administration, a M.E.in Psychology, and a B.S. inMathematics. She is a seasonededucator who started as a classroommath teacher and counselor, andadvanced to becoming a collegedean. She is also a past BK parent.

Dr. Hagler is a featured speaker,and has traveled internationally to

speak on quality and organizationalimprovement. She participated ina 1990 ten-part PBS special on theTransformation of America withDr. Deming. In 1982, she foundedTechnology Exchange Center andassisted over 500 organizations inthe implementation of qualitymanagement principles. Since 1987,she has facilitated public strategicplanning for the DoD (Star Wars),DoE, Central Intelligence and theMiami International Airport.

The majority of her experienceis in facilitating strategic planningfor many major academic institu-tions and school districts. Locally,she led 35 Idaho school districts

through this process, including hercurrent work in the Boise SchoolDistrict. She is facilitating the definition of BSU’s “MetropolitanResearch University of Distinction”and the distributed CommunityCollege for the Treasure Valley.Her broad work in Idaho and theTreasure Valley uniquely positionsDr. Hagler to understand thefuture trends in secondary andpost-secondary education inIdaho and beyond.

She is donating her time inpart because she understands thevalue of the Bishop Kelly experi-ence. We are blessed to have Dr.Hagler as our guide in this process.

BUDGET BREAKDOWN

Increase in Non-Tuition Revenue Needed

Bishop Kelly has not histori-cally published an annual report,but some general informationmay help give a picture of BishopKelly finances.

The Finance Committee ofthe Board of Governance overseesthe budget process starting inDecember with expense estimatesfrom department chairs. InJanuary, the committee makes aconservative enrollment estimatefor the following year. Fromthese estimates, next year’s facultycontracts are prepared for signa-ture in May. With an estimatedstudent load and the associatedsalary expense estimate, the nextyear’s tuition cost can be set bythe Board of Governance intime for the spring enrollmentseason. The Finance Committeecan then draw up a draft budget.

If additional students enrollbeyond the estimate, the extratuition income funds some extraprojects and programs. Onceschool begins and actual enroll-ment stabilizes, a final budget isapproved by the BK Board ofGovernance, usually at theirSeptember meeting. This approvedbudget becomes the fundingauthority for the various depart-ments and programs for the academic year. Bishop Kelly’s

annual operating budget is basedon an enrollment of 660 studentsand is close to 4 million dollars.

On the revenue side, 85 percent of our annual operatingincome comes from tuition andfees. Bishop Kelly collects over99 percent of all tuition due.

Non-tuition revenue sourcesinclude the Bishop KellyFoundation (7%), parishionertuition grants from the sevensupporting Catholic parishes, aswell as the Diocese (7%), anddonations from the Parents asPartners program and the AnnualAppeal (1%). Combined, thesenon-tuition revenue sources makeup the other 15 percent of BishopKelly’s total budget. The NationalCatholic Educational Association(NCEA) reports that Catholicsecondary schools nationwideaverage 30 percent of their annualincome from non-tuition sources.

On the expense side, employeecompensation, including taxes,benefits and retirement, accountfor 81 percent of all Bishop Kellyexpenses. Financial aid represents10 percent of all expenses. Onein every six students at BishopKelly receives some portion ofthe financial aid offered. Theremaining 9 percent representsthe rest of the school’s operatingcost. These expense figures are inline with the NCEA’s nationalaverage figures.

Bishop Kelly depends on thegrants it receives from the Diocese,our parishes and the Bishop KellyFoundation. The BK Foundationrecently reviewed the school’sincreasing budget needs. Trendanalysis indicates a need to growthe Foundation’s $4 millionendowment to be able to continueto meet the school’s future needs.Our Strategic Plan identifiesstrategies and actions to increaseboth the endowment and thenon-tuition revenue to be morein line with national averages.Increasing non-tuition revenue iscritical to maintaining access to aCatholic education by holdingdown tuition cost.

Reconnecting and Rekindling Friendships

For the 18th consecutiveyear, BK alumni met on the golfcourse this fall to raise funds forthe AlumKnights scholarshipprogram. Sixty-four players in allcompeted at Quail Hollow golfcourse and raised $3,860.00.“We took it one hole at a time,”said Bryan Dingel (’84) of histeammates Mike Dingle (’87),Jon Skinner (’84), and TimThometz (’84). The foursomefinished in first place with MikeShalz (’78) and Andy Brunelle

(’78) taking honors for closest to the pin on holes #2 and #16.

The libations and rhetoricflowed freely at the 19th holeafter the event. The HistoryClub found it easy to sell “KellyPride” buttons as all prepared tomove from the tournament tothe homecoming football gamethat evening. The scramble was agreat day in the sun with alumni,parents, faculty and friends.Plan to join us next year.

For 17 years running andgunning, alumni have gatheredat BK on the first Saturday following Christmas for theannual 3-on-3 Alumni HoopFest. According to tourney director Bill Fritz (’69), thisyear’s winners were: brothersKevin McCarthy ’93 and DennisMcCarthy ’97, along with father-son combo Danny Bruce ’97 and Steve Bruce ’68.

Alumni Directory Goes to Press

The Alumni Office hasteamed up with UniversityPublishing Corporation to bringout our first comprehensivealumni directory in November2006. Everyone on our mailinglist received an initial letter inNovember explaining the programand asking for updated informa-tion. Follow-up mailings solicitinginformation from those that didnot respond initially went out inJanuary and February.

Those who have respondedwith a valid address on file at thetime of printing will receive acomplimentary copy of the directory. Our privacy policy doesnot allow publishing contactinformation, so you must respondor your details cannot be includedin the directory. A voluntarycontribution helped defray thecosts of publishing the directory,but was not required to receive acopy. The directory will be com-pleted and mailed in November.

The directory format willpresent Bishop Kelly alumni sorted several ways, including byclass, geographic location andoccupation, to allow you to connect with old fiends, makenew friends and network withother alumni.

While some directory programsproduce high-cost, leather-bound

directories sold by pushy tele-marketers, we plan to give you aless expensive, but functionaldirectory, updating it more often.

Reunion Re-Cap

Kelly (Jackson)and Pete Parsley at

the Class of ’80’s 25-year reunion.

The class of ’80 held a 25-year reunion last August.Highlights for the attendeesincluded Fr. Wilson’s “firesidechat” at the mass in the BKChapel; golf followed by a pubcrawl; and the Saturday nightdinner. A special couple took tothe dance floor — recently married classmates Kelly (JacksonEaston) and Pete Parsley. Kellyand Pete became reacquainted atthe 20-year reunion. Sparks flew,and they were married not longbefore the 25-year reunion.

The Parsleys are the sixth couple to marry among classmates.Two other classmate couples atthe reunion were MaryAnn (Bresnahan) andDoug Hammond, andConnie (Brown) andPat McDonough.

The planningcommittee was led by “First Ladyof Boise” Julia Nemeth, marriedto Boise Mayor Dave Bieter (’78).Congratulations to Julia and Davefor the recent addition of a babygirl to their family.

The classes of ’66, ’76, ’86and ’96 will be reaching 10-yeargraduation anniversaries thissummer. Class leaders planningBishop Kelly reunions shouldcontact the Director of AlumniAffairs, Mark Jaszkowski, forresources to help facilitate theprocess. Contact Mark at [email protected].

On September 12th, 2005,Bishop Kelly was issued an occupancy permit to move intoour brand new, state-of-the-artchemistry classroom and labora-tory, the last step in a tight modernization timetable.

Last spring, Boise StateUniversity notified Bishop Kellythat our AP Chemistry classwould no longer qualify for con-current enrollment and collegecredit because the lab, built in

1964, did not meet NationalScience Foundation standards forhigh school chemistry laboratories.

Not willing to concede thisaspect of our chemistry program,we set out to modernize this class-room and lab over the short threemonth summer break. This was acritically important project as ourchemistry classroom operates atfull capacity all day throughoutthe year. Dr. Guy Hudson, BK

chemistry instructor, researchedand designed a new space thatmet NSF standards and hischemistry curriculum needs. Theconstruction estimate for thatdesign was $222,000. Our budgetdoes not have that large a sumavailable on any kind of shortnotice. If we were to modernizeour chemistry space, a lot ofmoney would have to be raisedquickly. It would have to beraised in time to commit to start

construction and stillfinish the project overthe summer so wedid not impact ourchemistry students inthe fall.

We petitioned theE. L. WiegandFoundation in Reno,Nevada, and theyinvited us to applyfor a grant out of

cycle. The E. L WiegandFoundation was also the principalinvestor in creating our currentphysics and computer labs. On June 2nd, the WiegandFoundation approved a $155,787grant to upgrade our chemistryfacility. The remainder of therequired $222,000 was made upby the school.

During construction we discovered deteriorated and

clogged waste plumbing drainsdeep underground. Correctingthese problems delayed an alreadyextremely tight schedule and theschedule slipped into the firstfour weeks of school. The Fallsemester chemistry classes met inone of the temporary classroomsuntil the project was completed September 12th.

The new classroom/laboratoryis fully compliant with NationalScience Foundation high schoolstandards. Our accreditation forcollege level work is secured andmore importantly, we built achemistry facility based on supporting our curriculum needsnow and for the foreseeablefuture.

“Completing this project insuch a short time frame was theresult of some very hard workand close cooperation by verydiverse groups of people. I was soimpressed by the work of our staff,the E.L. Wiegand Foundation,the Building Committee, cityofficials, and construction crews,”said Mr. Robert Wehde, BKPrincipal. “The new classroom/laboratory is a real gem and weare blessed to have it available to our students.”

Excellent Stems From Quality Faculty

For the second time inBishop Kelly history, six seniors ina single year have been namedNational Merit Scholar Finalists.Alejandro Ciniglio, StefanieFazzio, Katie Higgins, GregJohnston, Mary Claire Murphyand Christine O’Neil finished inthe top 15,000 of 1.3 millionjuniors nationwide taking thePreliminary SAT/National MeritScholarship Qualifying Test(PSAT) test in the fall.

From 1964 to 2005, BishopKelly has had 99 National MeritScholar Finalists. This year’sselection pushes the total number of finalists from BishopKelly to 104.

The National Merit®

Scholarship Program is an academic competition forrecognition and merit-basedscholarships that began in 1955.Beginning in March and continuing to mid-June of theirsenior year, the National MeritScholar Corporation notifiesapproximately 8,200 finaliststhat they have been selected toreceive a Merit Scholarship. We arevery proud of these six top scholars.

Three Bishop Kelly seniorsswept the Idaho Peace Coalitionessay contest this fall honoringthe birthday of Gandhi. In thesenior high school division,Christine O’Neil won first prize,Patrick Ellison, second prize, andMaggie Crotty took third. Each

winning essay answered the question, “What change for peacewould you like to see in the world?How would you become thatchange?” The students receivedtheir awards in October at theAnne Frank Idaho Human RightsMemorial in Boise.

Bishop Kelly is proud to recognize Ms. Jane Wilson andDr. Larry Neznanski, both ofwhom received distinguishedteaching awards this year.

Ms. Wilson was recognized asthe Idaho Secondary Art Teacherof the Year by the Art EducationAssociation, the Idaho art educators’ professional association.

Dr. Neznanski was selectedby the Idaho Department ofEducation as the Idaho ScienceTeacher of the Year. By this designation, he became a finalistfor the Presidential Award forExcellence in Science and Math-ematics, the highest award ournation bestows on a teacher. InApril, Dr. Larry Neznanski wasselected by President George W.Bush as a 2005 Presidentialnominee. Dr. Neznanski’s excep-tional teaching, leadership abilities,and dedication to students placedhim among 100 Presidentialnominees for the nation’s highest

honor for mathematics and scienceteaching. Each year, nominees arebrought to Washington DC for aweek of activities that include avisit to the White House, the U.S.Capital, The National Academy ofSciences, and dinner at the U.S.Department of State. An awardceremony was held on May 4,2006 to honor the 100 nomineeswho received a citation signed byPresident Bush, identifying themas recipients of the PresidentialAward. Catholic highschool in NewOrleans. Asthe nationalspotlight shiftsto other issues,there are stillstudents inNew Orleansasking wheream I going to

sleep? There are seniors who willnot graduate from their school asit will not open in time forgraduation. For still others, schoolwill never reopen. Our publicschool in Belle Chasse, Louisiana,is in Plaquemines Parish, one ofthe poorest school districts in thecountry. “There are no poorerschool districts I have witnessedin my career as a principal thanthe New Orleans school districts,”said Wehde.

Archbishop Rummel HighSchool, our partner Catholicschool, was not damaged, but hastaken on an additional 1,400 students in a “transition school”.School for the regular studentsnow starts at 6:30am and ends at

1pm. Then the transition schoolcommences and runs from 1pmto 7pm in the building. Parents atRummel are busy organizing carpools and dances for the transitionstudents to help create a func-tioning school environment.

Fred Landry of ArchbishopRummel High School said,“Things are better down here,but we still have a long way togo. Many parents have lost jobsor are working at a reducedincome. As our school is nowaccommodating over 1,400 students, as well as our currentstudent population of 1,300, theneed for portable dry erase boards,textbooks, school supplies, andteacher resources is critical. Wehave a critical need for new or usedscientific (graphing) calculators.Whatever assistance you can lendwould be most appreciated.”

Bishop Kelly has donated afirst-class set of world literaturetextbooks that were in excess atBishop Kelly. These could havebeen resold as used, but we choseto help our partner school. Beyondmoney, we are committed tobuilding a partnership and helpingto meet their needs as an ongoingcommitment. Mr. Wehde said,“We need to stand by them andalign our words and our actions

so our students can see we areliving what we teach.”

“We are also committed toparticipating in the child-to-childprogram sponsored by theNational Catholic EducationAssociation (NCEA),” saidWehde. The NCEA challengedCatholic schools in America toraise one dollar for each of the2.6 million students. To date$900K has been raised. BishopKelly students have raised over$4 per student and the Dioceseof Boise has also topped thenational goal of $1 per student,according to Dan Makley,Superintendent of Catholicschools. “We need to give out ofour abundance, and this is a perfect opportunity to give to aschool in need,” said Wehde. “It is important our students and school community live outthe Gospel message.”

And from Mr. Landry inNew Orleans, “Thank you againfor your concern, kindness,prayers, and assistance. God blessyou and the students of BishopKelly High School.”

During spring break, a groupof Bishop Kelly students traveledto New Orleans to help thosedevastated by Hurricane Katrina.They worked with five Presentationnuns in New Orleans. “We wouldlike to thank everyone for theirsupport of our trip.” said CathyClarkson, faculty leader of the trip.“The devastation is far greater thanwe imagined. We worked hard,but it was a drop in the bucketcompared to what is left to do.”

Of greater importance, though,was how the students encounteredthe people in our mid-cityneighborhood: offeringthem coffee and a piece ofcake, listening to their stories, asking them howthey were doing, compli-menting them on a paintjob, or simply sharing asmile or a friendly hello!Many of the workers speakSpanish, so it was a treatfor them to have Cathy, Ellie andthe students converse with themin Spanish. They miss you!

The people are quite over-whelmed that a group of highschool students would travel allthe way from Boise, Idaho to beamong them and to help them inthe rebuilding of their city. Theyrecognized the goodness of theseyoung women and men and theywill forever be grateful!

Our first all-student liturgyfor students last fall included anopportunity for students to invitetheir grandparents to attend Masswith them in celebration of Grand-parents’ Day. Eighty grandparentswere expected from the RSVPs,but we quickly filled over 250 seatson the gym floor. Mrs. JosetteStagg and Mrs. Judy Nicola, representing the Booster Club,served coffee, punch and cookiesat a reception following the Mass.

The campus ministry teamwas pleased by the tremendousresponse, and plans to make thisan annual event. They are plan-ning for a larger audience andeasier access to the reception atthe next Mass.

“So many of the grand-parents commented how muchthey appreciated the liturgy andopportunity to visit campus —

we need to repeat this event,”said Ms. Laura Henning, head ofthe campus ministry team.

The 2006 Grandparents’ DayMass will be held on September13th, and we invite all of ourgrandparents to join us.

October 17th marked anothermilestone for the Bishop Kellymarching band as they competedin their first ever marching competition in Ontario, Oregon.“The judge was very compli-mentary of the technical aspectsof their performance, playingtogether, playing in tune, andsmart marching and formations,”said John King, Band Director.The band looked sharp sportingnew uniforms provided by generous benefactors at the 2004 Winner’s Choice Auction. The Band also repeated the performance during the footballseason. Many of these samestudents delivered a spectacularperformance with the Jazz Bandand Honors Band at the Christmasconcert in December. Keep aneye on this growing program asthe Band Director, John King,steadily builds this dimension ofthe BK experience.

The Idaho High SchoolActivities Association (IHSAA)honored Bishop Kelly as the2005 winner of the “4A Schoolof Excellence” award at theirAnnual Meeting.

The IHSAA developed theSchools of Excellence Program toencourage schools to promotecitizenship and good sportsman-ship at their school and at IHSAAevents. During the yearlong, voluntary program, schools earnpoints based upon their varsityteams’ performance in the class-room, in the athletic venue, andin citizenship and sportsmanship.

Bishop Kelly recognizesSpencer Carter(’07) who, alongwith two Boise city police,entered the Boise River onFebruary 14, 2006 to save adrowning woman after an appar-ent suicide attempt. Carter, aRed Cross certified lifeguard, andtwo of his cross-country team-mates were training on theGreenbelt when they heard thewoman’s cries for help.

Congratulations to the girls’cross country team, the boys’cross country team and the foot-ball team for winning 4A statetitles this past fall. The boys’cross country title was a bigupset, and the girls earned theirthird consecutive state title. “Iattribute our win to the summerbase we built,” says cross countrycoach Tom Shanahan.

The football team defendedits 4A state title for its first back-to-back win through an incrediblyexciting post season. A tight 21-20 win over Sandpoint in thesemi-finals and a 31-29 victoryover Pocatello secured the trophy.The football team also earnedthe 4A IHSAA Academic Awardfor the highest team GPA.

It is easy to take success forgranted, but one has only to visitthe Carley Center and look atthe state title banners to see thiswas not always the case. FatherWilson coached Bishop Kelly’sBoys’ Golf team to victory inour first state title in 1969. Titles

came in ones or twos sporadicallyover the next decade,though growing evermore frequent. Thesteady growth continuestoday, culminating withseven titles in this andlast academic year.More than half of the71 state titles BKstudents have earnedcame since the CarleyCenter opened in 2000.

This success is a result of several factors that are remarkablysimilar to the success we haveachieved in other aspects of ourprogram. Good students workinghard, dedicated staff and coachespatiently building programs overmultiple years, steady facilityinvestment, and supportive,involved alumni and parents.

While the credit goes to thecoaches and athletes, we also recognize and thank the staff,parents, alumni and benefactorswho all play a part in creating aculture of achievement here at

Bishop Kelly. CoachTim Brennan summedit up best. “Thesuccess of our football program is directlyrelated to the support of the Bishop Kellycommunity.”

Saturday evening, November 5,2005, was a momentous occasionfor the Bishop Kelly Foundation’sWinner’s Choice dinner andauction. Almost $225,000 wasraised for the support of theschool and its students. Auctionattendees spent the eveningbrowsing among tables filled withsilent auction items and purchasingprize balloons from Bishop Kelly

student helpers. Master ofCeremonies, Dr. David Lachiondoand Auctioneer Tom Hennessey,sold items ranging from vacationtrips and sumptuous dinners tofurniture, diamond jewelry andhigh-tech gadgets.

Following the live auction, Dr.Lachiondo and Mr. Hennesseyconducted a “reverse auction” toraise money for financial aid forcurrent and future Bishop Kellystudents. Bidders were asked toraise their paddles if they wished tocontribute $5,000, $3,000, $1,000,$500 or $100 to the cause, with theresult being nearly $45,000 raisedfor scholarships. Once again, the

community showed its support forBK by coming through in a bigway for students.

At every Winner’s Choicedinner and auction, the Foundationrecognizes two individuals whohave gone above and beyond ingiving of themselves for the goodof Bishop Kelly. The 2005 recipients of the Order of theKnight awards were Bob Borgna,immediate past president of theBishop Kelly Foundation, andTim LaMott, chairman of theBishop Kelly Board of Governance.

The most suspenseful part ofthe evening was the drawing fora new car. The car was won byRobert Rathbone and JamesSteele, Jr. With their wives out oftown, they came to the auction on aticket purchased by a friend. Theynow have the happy dilemma offiguring out how to split a car.

Each year the Winner’s Choicedinner and auction relies on thegoodwill of the community, parents, alumni, and friends todonate auction items and give oftheir time and talent to make theevent a success. Because of theirgenerosity, the BK Foundationwill turn over record proceeds toBishop Kelly High School. Wethank all of our donors, bidders,attendees and volunteers for thistremendous effort.

The McEntees Pave the Way

Over the years, Bishop Kellyhas been blessed by many wonder-ful families whose involvement withthe school impacted our school ina significant way. The McEnteefamily is one such family.

If you drove to Bishop Kellybefore 1988, you remember thevast expanse of dirt in front of theschool, the original parking lot.You probably also remember theoft-repeated joke that the potholesin that parking lot were the finalresting place for Volkswagen bugs.That all changed in 1988 whenBishop Kelly parent and patronLarry McEntee, owner andPresident of Central Paving andConsolidated Concrete, paved theparking lot.

This project (which in today’sdollars would be about $250,000),is only one of the McEntee family’scontributions to Bishop Kelly.Larry also served on the BishopKelly School Board and was anearly member of the Bishop KellyFoundation. In 1998, after hisdeath, he was named to the“Order of the Knight”, the high-est honor bestowed by the BishopKelly Foundation.

Larry and his wife Carolynsaw four of their children graduatefrom BK: Mike (’69), Kelli (’71),Peggy (’72) and Terry (’77). Threegrandchildren, Amy (’96), Megan

(’98) and Tim (’02) are also alumni.But the McEntee story doesn’t

stop there! Both Mike and TerryMcEntee served on the BishopKelly Foundation Board. Mikespent two terms as President ofthe Foundation and also servedon the Bishop Kelly Board ofTrustees. The strong support ofthe McEntee family continuestoday, including significant involve-ment in the annual Winner’sChoice auction. When we neededa large truckload of sand on shortnotice for the HomecomingBonfire this year, one call to Terryand a truck was on its way.

“Bishop Kelly has positivelytouched the McEntee family overmany years in different ways,”said Mike. “The tradition andpride started with our dad, Larry,who always felt an obligation togive back to our great community, ofwhich Bishop Kelly High School was at the top of the list. He lovedthe school and the positive impactit had, not only on his family andgrandchildren, but to the manyfamilies who also attended BishopKelly. He knew his return oninvestment was the future of theschool. His legacy lives on withthe continued involvement of ourfamily who are proud to carry onthe tradition of giving back to avery special place.”

Terry McEntee (’77) is athird-generation contractor, and aBSU Construction Managementprogram graduate. When he isnot busy building Idaho’s roads,serving on the Association ofGeneral Contractors, or the BSUConstruction ManagementProgram Advisory Board, heenjoys spending time with hiswife and two small children.

The Parents as PartnersProgram is an opportunity forparents to help bridge the gapbetween the stated tuition rate andthe actual cost to educate a BishopKelly student. The program helpsBK in three very important ways.First, it helps us keep tuition lowand opens our doors to studentsthat otherwise could not attend.Second, by holding down ourtuition, we enroll more students.Each additional student moves ustoward full capacity, which inturn helps our financial position.Finally, the program revenue allowsus to add important programs thatwould not otherwise be funded.

Because the cost to educateour students is more than whatwe charge for tuition, the BKFoundation offsets the actual cost

with proceeds from their endow-ment and annual auction event.Additionally, the cost for Catholicstudents enrolled through one ofthe supporting parishes is furtheroffset by a parish subsidy.

To serve our economically-diverse population by making aBK education accessible to as manyas possible, and to fill our school,we have made tough decisions tokeep tuition low. Both the cost oftuition and the cost to educate astudent at BK are lower than allother Catholic high schools in thePacific Northwest. Our cost toeducate a student is also less thanthe Boise School District.

Please join us in this importantprogram. Participation levels makea big difference in our successwhen we apply for grants.

Bishop Kelly Tuition Facts:

• The actual cost to educate aBishop Kelly student in 2005/6will be $6,800.

• For the 2004/5 school year, 107 students received $212,000in need-based financial aid.

• For 2004/5, $570,000 in non-tuition grants helped set tuitionwell below our actual costs.

• For 2004/5, tuition generated82% of all revenue while salariesconsumed 80% of all revenue.
